Title: Illinois Open Series Publicity
Post by: CEValkyrie on March 12, 2004, 03:39:06 PM
In efforts to pub this event, I figured i'd start this thread. It will help track what courses have flyers posted. Here is a link to the flyer. If anyone needs copies, I have a ton.

Crystal Lake Park District is adding the series to their Spring Park Letter sent to residents.

I've posted flyers at these courses so far.
Waukegan
Libertyville
Mundelein
Round Lake
Crystal Lake

Jon, can you post flyers at Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Streamood, & Lombard when you get a chance?

Mirth might post flyers at both Highland Park courses & possibly Glencoe if he gets a chance.

Can someone in Kenosha post a flyer @ UWP?

Damon is posting flyers at any course he plays & Mike Walsh, AKA airspuds is posting flyers along the I-80 area. Thanks DISContinuum South!!

If anyone wants flyers, I have them. I made 200 copies to start. Please let me know if there is a course that needs a flyer. I'll try to get one up ASAP. Thanks!!

I'll be in the Lombard area Tuesday on 'business' in the morning; planning on playing in the PM, if it's not pouring rain I'll at least get flyers up.

Jon, let me know if you made it there or not.

Not. I wound up playing a couple of rounds at BG and then it got really gusty. I put up two flyers at BG but didn't make it anywhere else.

Publicize this:

The Illinois Open Series is happy to announce that they've dumped their lame-ass Discraft-only merch supplier and are now working with a merch supplier who can meet your basic Innova needs.  We will have Orcs, Monsters, Beasts, Eagle, Valks, Vikes, Rocs, Aviars and maybe even some icky Spiders.  No, we will not have the 8X Whatever KC in the yellow plastic.  But we will have whats current for this season.  Plus plenty of Discraft and maybe a Gateway disc if you look hard.

Brett,

Do you want to play Elk Grove and/or Streamwood with me on Saturday?
Title: Illinois Open Series Publicity
Post by: Bruce Brakel on March 26, 2004, 06:01:52 PM
Here's another little illinois open series development that some of you might care about:  We are not doing stacks of plastic this year.  Jon, Brett and I all think that for a tournament series funny money for the Ams is cool because you can spend it now or you can spend it later.  If you finish in a three-way tie for last prizes and get $4  :P  you can save it for next time and get something with it.  If you win $50 you can save up for a Skill Shot.   ;)

The main problem with funny money is that you put it in your wallet, play a round in a thunderstorm, and now you have funny paper pulp!    :(   I don't want to take advantage of anyone that way.  It has happened to me and it kind of sucks.

So we are going to have special $1 and $5 brass coins [/size]for this event and every other Jon/Brett/Bruce event we do this year.  The people who have seen and felt [and flipped and spun] samples of these coins all think that the $5 coin may be cooler than anything you could buy with it!  The manufacturer's rep told me that small run coins similar to what we are doing sometimes become collectors items among token collectors and can sell for more than their face value.  I'm not counting on that, but the cool collectible factor might help defray the cost of this unique concept.

This brass cash will be good all through 2004.  If the concept works the way we hope, the brass cash will get even cooler in 2005.  I'll have the real stuff in my greedy little hands in a week or two and then I'll toss a handful on the scanner and post a picture

Thank you.  When I originally came up with this idea I thought over time we could work it to seize control of the international monetary system.    But then I sat down, took off the tin foil hat, did the math and realized that we really wouldn't have the monetary power to seize control of anything bigger than Jim's car.

But, the idea is still cool.  It just needed to sit on the back burner until the year I'd be doing nine or ten tournaments.  Factored over nine or ten tournaments this costs about one entry fee at each event.  I hope that guy shows up every time!

This is one reason why I think the Brett-Bruce-Jon event leadership works. Bruce brings lots of imaginative ideas to the table. You can just imagine the ones that you and everyone else don't even hear about...if you know what I mean.  ;)

Illinois Open web page has been updated to include links to individual pages for each leg of the series. I haven't added any content yet except for a mapquest link to a street map to help locate the course. I'm going to add tournament course notes, course pictures and course score card as they are available.

Thanks to everyone who has put up flyers in the last week or so! The web page is getting more hits and I've gotten a few phone calls just today from flyers that were put up.

Barratt White took some schedules from me so she could point out the IOS to her homeboys.  So did a guy from DeKalb.  Since I was playing Pro2-Silver today i had several opportunities to chat with Pro 2 players and i pointed out that our five tournaments [2 MDGOs and 3 IOS] are about the only five tournaments in the midwest offering Pro 2.  I explained that Pro 2 is on Saturday.  They could make money Saturday while practicing the course and then let it ride on sunday.  They liked that concept.

The Wisconsin guys were huffy about us running against their unsanctioned events.  I told them that we scheduled around the sanctioned stuff and we had no way of knowing when Wisconsin is running below-the-radar unsanctioned stuff.  Isn't there unsanctioned stuff every weekend?  There is at Bevier!  That calmed them down a little.

I finished in the top 1/3rd of Silver with a rating that puts me in the bottom 1/10th so i did ok.  Based on the DGLO 2003 ratings I shot a 962 and a 943.  I have to feel good about that.

Everyone I explained the brass cash to thought it was the coolest thing.  The brass cash pays for itself if 5% of it is collected and saved for its coolness value.  That could happen.

remember, it all expires on January 1, 2005.  If there are any poker players out there wanting cool poker chips, talk to me January 1, 2005.

You can take BG off the list. Its fairly obvious that its park employees that take the signs down because they are careful to take down all the tape as well. They are relentless in taking down signs, but they don't call "the offender" who would be me. I might start putting up a plain paper flyer every Friday evening figuring it might last until Monday.

Kelsey, Kira and I hit the resale shops Saturday looking for some knickerizable pants.  We also founds some little frames that would be good for displaying a mint set of brass cash.

I called the manufacturer today to give them a credit card number because I did not have it when I placed my order and the guy who answered the phone told me that my coins were being pressed even as we spoke.  He could hear the machine running.  So I asked if they would come in paper or plastic rolls and he said that they would just come in buckets.

This was slightly disappointing because technically none of them will be "mint" when we receive them.  So Kelsey had an idea.  Instead of labeling them "mint sets," she suggested putting a drop of mint oil on each frame and calling them "minty sets."

So we did find some knickerizable pants.  Kelsey tried to make these hideous black and orange striped eye stabbers using my disc dyes.  The black and orange did not stay where she put it and now I have these orangish pants with smoky swirls.

Let me make sure I understand:
It's $33 for each tournament you play, not for the entire series, correct? For example, I can't play in Streamwood, so if I sign up for Crystal Lake and Round Lake I'd pay $66.

Just looking for clarification.

You would pay $33 for each tournament. So, if you went to two tournaments you would pay $66. However, if you select a $10 bill as your player's pack, you would only be spending $46. Ams will have a choice of 2 player's packs. $15 in funny money (spend it right away or save it for later) or $10 cash.

You also have the choice of playing both days ( by playing up on Sunday), so you could spend more, if you wanted to.  ;)

You could also spend your $10 cash rebate right away.  We are set up to take cash.   :D
