Inquiring minds want to know. The website is members only, so I didn't have much luck there.

Shns are a type of music file, like an mp3, except way better.  Shns were developed by music lovers to compress wav file information into a smaller format, but without taking out the top and bottom end of the recording which mp3's do.  It's used primarily for converting a live recording to a format tradable over the internet and is used by techology savy Wookies and Hippies throughout the world.  Recently, a new file format called .flac was introduced into the community.  Expanding on the basic .shn format, .flac allows tapers to record shows at even higher quality (64 bit I believe) and convert them without sacrificing sound quality.  You can check out EtreeWiki (http://wiki.etree.org) for more information.

SHN is like a zip file... what you put into it is identical to what you get out, provided your archive file didn't get corrupted in transmission.

FLAC is a newer compression codec and while similar to SHN in that your input files are losslessly compressed, it allows for higher bit- and sample rate PCM audio. It is also an Open Source project, which has its own benefits.

FLAC's pronounced as how it appears, SHN is pronounced like 'shin'.

Hell, for anyone whose interested:

server: etree.rafansrule.org
port 420
user: etree
password: nanooka22

Please turn off all forms of FTP keep alive & auto reconnect else you will be automagically banned from the server for 18 hours. Also, if you are able to log on but have troubles getting a directory list please turn on PASV mode FTP.

If none of this makes any sense to you, but you want free music, consider checking out http://www.archive.org/audio (http://www.archive.org/audio) and/or http://www.etree.org/ (http://www.etree.org/)
