Jay,
Jon is going to be uploading picture into the gallery. Would you be willing to put together a page like you did for Fairfield? I'm working on hole descriptions.
Absolutely, I've been slacking in my webmaster duties, this will be good for me to do something again :D
Excellent Jay!! Jon will be uploading the pictures. I have started a word document with course description and hole description. Once i'm finished I will forward it to you or attach it to this thread.
While you are at it, can you add New in 2004-> The baskets at Fairfield have been repainted and have all new bolts, to the Fairfield Page? & that the parking lot has been expanded.
Attached is the description of the park & hole by hole descriptions.
Anyone that has played this course, please check out the descriptions and add anything to them. Descriptive writing is not my specialty :P .

There was one typo for #5 and an adjusted comment for #10, but I forget how to add an attachment.
How about replying with the corrections?

well, sure, but are attachments disabled for non-officers or something?
Shady Oaks Park
Streamwood, IL

Hole #5 (250 Feet)
The basket sits on the side of a very steep grade hill. There is a fence at the top of the hill that is out of bounds. You must be accurate with your drive so you have an easy two. A putt that hits the basket and misses has a good chance or rolling down the hill.

Hole #10 (390 Feet)
This is another hole you get to grip it and rip it. Down the left side of the fairway is a fence that marks out of bounds. There is plenty of room over there and it takes a horrible RH hyzer to find out of bounds. The wind can pull your disc into the cattails on the right if you’re not careful though.

Very good job on the descriptions Brett.
I think #5 should read as follows:

I would remove the word "grade" in #9. #10 description isn't complete. It ends with "The basket " and nothing more. In #17 I would replace "grade" with "slope".
I would replace globally the word "rough" with "shule".
This is my official Ops member opinion. ;)
Umm, excellent question.

Isn't "shule" a particularly (koff, koff) "Michigan" term? :P

Some people on the PDGA board came up with the term as far as I know. I've also read it in DGWN. I think of it as a non-ball golf term. A term that applies only to disc golf. Differentiation is good, I think.
To me it seems a bit silly, and very confusing. Shule, doesn't really exist in the dictionary. Shul however, is a synagogue. While we all pray when we hit the rough once in a while, it should just be called "the rough". That's just personal opinion though.
I just recently learned the term "shule" from watching the Pro Worlds that took place in Michigan. I did remember them saying that it was something the Michigan golfers had named the "ugly" rough.
I think it might confuse some people, unless you note in the description that shule = rough.
Personally, I like the term "shule" better than rough. It just sounds more fun and makes being in the "shule" not as bad as being in the "rough"
Did not mean to change this thread into a shule vs. rough debate. DiscTV also used the term extensively during their broadcasts. I think it will be the disc golf term for rough. If you think its "too cutting edge" then don't use it.
Jon,
The 3 holes you uploaded to the gallery look good!
All 18 holes are uploaded. If its not obvious, I used the following naming convention: [course][hole#][picture view] where t=tee pad, m=middle of the hole, and b=basket. For example, streamwood 1t is the tee view on hole 1 at streamwood. Since the pictures loaded in alpha order they are reversed from the order in which you would walk the hole.
Take a look at streamwood 11m. I think that's a great shot that also captures the feel of the course in one picture. I think I'll probably use that in someway on the IOS page.
Excellent pictures Jon!!
Ready for you to work your magic Jay :D .
I will start to work on this today, will finish it either tonight or tomorrow morning :D
When the cattails are waist high they are "rough." When they are over your head, they are schule.
Mark Ellis popularized the term by defining it and using it in the 2000 Worlds Players' Guide. Schule is the rougher parts of the rough, the parts that make you think about the 5-meter rule. Etymologically, the term schule is derived from school and sh-t. It is the sh-t that takes you to school.

I tried to figure out if it was "shule" or "schule" but I came across "shule" more often. Maybe it has something to do with my name, but I went with the one without the superfluous letter.
The "rough" that is worth noting at Streamwood is all shule. Its all the kind of stuff that you have to think about how you might manage to throw out of. The stuff that isn't schule, isn't really even all that rough.

I understand where the term derives from, but in 5 years shule will just mean anything that isn't the fairway on a disc golf course. It'll be star par all over again. 8)

Yes, you are right, and that would be Starr par, for those who understand the etymology of that term.
Could someone explain hyzer?
Quote
Could someone explain hyzer?
It's easier to explain anhyzer.
This comes from drinking too much Budweiser, being trapped in a large shrub (or shule/schule/whatever) and having to throw towards the basket with the disc tilted upwards at 10 o'clock or so.
This type of shrub, and this type of throw, under these conditions, has come to be known as the...
anhyzer bush.
god I'm bored today.

You da man jay!!! Can't wait.
How's the Shady Oaks course page coming along?

Yeah, what he said.
*whistles innocently*
Look for it by Wednesday.
If it's not there I give everyone permission to give me the beat down.
I got my baseball bat in the car :D .
I'll bring a 3 wood with a graphite shaft. What better way to beat a disc golfer down than with a Golf Club.
Ok, we will drop you off in Iraq if you don't get it done by Wednesday. Instead of a beat down, you will get your head chopped off.

How about by using a disc golf club? ;)
We could just enter him into Fear Factor and say he's competeing for a local charity. Then if he doesn't win we can kick his rooty poo candied butt!!
Okay before anyone sicks the hounds on me or the Rock or anything of the sort. I am having problems linking to images in the gallery, I have an idea why, but I need to talk to mirth. So other than the images not working the pages are done. They are'n't linked yet though because of this problem.
Any progress on the solution to the problem?
I don't even know what the problem is
The problem was a case issue in the URLs, that and some of the flash buttons still had links relative to the Fairfield pages & not the Streamwood ones.
Anyhow, I just spent the last hour fixing all of it and the pages are now online for your browsing pleasure.

Excellent!!! Thanks guys.
I went back & reread my descriptions. I caught a few errors. Very minor.
Hole #2.
This is another big (eiliminate) downhill shot. There are several trees that take the straight route away. You can throw a hyzer or anhyzer. The basket sits right on the edge of a stream. If you take a run at the basket and overshoot, you will find yourself in the water. If you leave your putt (drive) too short, you'll have to take a conservative putt so you don't run it into the water. This is a tricky short hole.
Hole #8
This is probably the toughest hole on the course. There is a route for a very long anhyzer to the basket but if you miss left, there is some nasty shule and out of bounds marked by the fence. You can take the straight or hyzer route as well. Most players choose this (one of these) option(s). There is a run off ditch that is usually wet in the spring and dry in the summer. There are several trees that guard the basket. The basket is nested about 30 feet behind these large trees.
Hole #10
This is another hole you get to grip it and rip it. Down the left side of the fairway is a fence that marks out of bounds. There is plenty of room over there and it takes a horrible hyzer to find out of bounds. The basket is place(d) near the cattails that run along the right side of the fairway. If you burn one on this hole, say goodbye.
Hole #11
Depending on the time of year, this hole plays very differently. When the cattails are low, you can throw a hzyer or straight shot to the basket. When they are tall, the hyzer and straight route is(are) eliminated and you have to take the anhyzer route. The basket is located between several mature trees.
Hole #12
Missing picture that is taken from the basket looking to the tee.
Hole #17
Check this one. It doesn't sound right.
One last thing.
On the course description, please add that some of the tee signs are inaccurate. The distances posted on this web page are accurate.
