Title: 4th Annual Widdershins Open
Post by: mirth on July 23, 2004, 08:16:16 AM
New and improved for 2004, this will be an Amateur only event sponsored by Gateway. With your entry you get two Gateway discs, a mini, and a Gateway sticker. Trophies to first place finishers, and prizes to the top 20-40% of the field (based on attendance).

WOMEN PLAY FOR FREE!!!

We have permission from WPD to use the park after the official close at dusk for a night round. This will not be part of the official tournament, but instead will be a casual glow doubles event following the usual rules and payout structure of our weekly doubles league.

Flyers will be available at the remaining IO Series events as well as the DISContinuum Blast!

Any of you talented folk out there want to come up with a design for the event hotstamp? Gateway's offering to make one of the discs in the players pack a stamped one...

I'm thinking something having to do with halloween would be cool.

god I wish I could draw because I have a good idea...

Problem though is I also have a hard time of thinking of things as line art and not in full color.

I'm in need of baskets to set up the temp holes for the event. If need be I'll bring out my M14 and call up some skillshots, but would anyone be willing to lend their portable for the day?

So far I have Brett's two baskets and Serg's Chainstar. Shawn, think I could borrow yours? Could you check with ShaBu to see if I could borrow his?

Regarding format, Gateway said Illustrator 9 would work best which is what... EPS?
My guess is any type of vector graphic is preferred, anything that can be blown up w/o loss.

It's a really cool stamp; this is picky, but there shouldn't be a period after the abbreviation for Illinois (unless it's "Ill.", which is becoming archaic  ;)  )
Title: 4th Annual Widdershins Open

Very cool stamp but Damon's right.  There is no period after IL. (This one is ok b/c its the end of a sentence.)

The stamp alone will make me throw my money in the pool for you guys to divide up.  But watch out, with no ob rope my scores are already lower.  :P

There is extraneous text information on the left side off the page. I deleted it from the version I did, but since you didn't want me to touch it...

If you do a select all while viewing small enough to see off the page, you'll see it get highlighted. The only reason I mention this is because I have dealt with getting discs stamped numerous times. If they get a font error at Gateway they might not go ahead and stamp it because they might be afraid that it doesn't look the way that you intended. If they take the time to click on all text they might see that they are all outlined and every thing is fine. I don't think you'd get the error in photoshop because I don't think photoshop looks for anything that's off the page.

I saw what you where talking about (on the left side). Thank you for deleting it and bringing it to my attention. Gateway told Mirth to send them an Illustrator file. I got rid of the extra stuff in the illustrator file so all should be good in the last one that was posted.

Shawn, I'll be glad to meet Craig at Parkside or where-ever.  Brett, I can be Bevier anytime after 5:30 this week, just let me know.  Or we can try to meet at Walgreen's on 21 and 137 in the afternoon?

Question on the hotstamp:

Is this the way we want Discontinuum spelled or do you want it with the capital letters at the beginning (DISContinuum)? The logos on the club polos have the capital letters.

Just playing the role of devil's advocate  8)

Is the font's actual name RHPS? If so, thats awesome. Been so long since I've done the time warp...

Anyhow Serg, yes, I sent it to Gateway last night. But I just sent them a message letting them know there is a correction coming & to discard the file I sent them.

FWIW I like the current font. While its not dripping blood or anything it still has a Halloween 'feel' to it.

If they stick to the 18 hole & 24 hole concept with each division playing both courses, they will only be able to accomodate 180 players. PDGA sanctioning rules have a max of 5 per hole. The 18 hole course limits a 5'some per hole. They could however have a division only play the 24 hole course twice making room for more players. the 24 hole course can hold 120 players. I'm not sure what they are doing tough since this came from Ebz & not the TD. Let's hope 200 show. I could see it happening.

We have ~60 player's packs for the Widdershins in, each one is an Element and a tourney stamped Wizard plus a pumpkin mini and sticker.

People playing in the Widdershins can preregister in person at league next Sunday and receive their player's pack then. Folks who aren't playing in the tournament can either purchase a player's pack for $20 and sponsor one women's player's pack or you can pay the entry fee for your typical division and it will be put into that division's prize pool.

Players packs are on a first come first served basis both in advance and day of event.

The players packs are pre assembled, most of the discs are in the 170s. A couple elements are 155 but those are the blue ones.

I hate to ask a silly question, but what is an Element?  I see that the Wizard is a putter but cannot find an Element on Gateway's website or that of any of the on-line disc venders.  I know that zinc is an element and so is oxygen.  But can they fly?

The Element is a brand new mold Gateway has. If you've ever thrown a Roc, its best described as a cross between a flat top Roc and a Wasp. Its a little wider than a regular disc, max legal weight is almost 184g.

I was throwing one at league yesterday and could get it to hold a line w/a little left fade at the end.

Fear and trepidation.

OK, some of you may have to look that up.

Anyhow, Omega SS, Soft Rhyno, Champ Shark when windy, 150 Aviar for long non-windy putts.

Wizard seems a little more stable than an Aviar, which isn't a bad thing necessarily.

Damon,

I find the Fear flys better for longer drives.  It brings out a bit too much adrenaline for the repose required for putting.  Trepidation is very understable.  However, if you learn to handle it you may find that you are ringing the chains.  I have been experimenting with 150 class Mens Rea and find that it always flies where I want it to go.  I have given up using the Hubris for my drives as they always seem to find a tree or a bush and never float as high as I think they will.

QuoteGot an email this afternoon from a parkside player who said he & his two buddies will be coming down for the event.
Sending e-mail to some USWDGC players.  3 questions:

Is the am-women-play-free a Gateway sponsored thing or an event sponsored thing?  Cuz I'd be happy to give up Gateway's money but I don't want to bankrupt the TD or the club.

Can pro women play in the men's amateur divisision that would correspond to their rating and play for whatever any other amateurs are getting?

For some reason it is sticking in my head that you had ratings breaks in mind for the divsions you were offering.  True?  I don't see it on the flyer but I thought that was the rationale for cash division.  Probably something Brett or Jon told me...
Title: 4th Annual Widdershins Open
Post by: mirth on October 20, 2004, 09:04:08 PM
Yes, I'm basically trying to use the R-tier ratings breaks to help classify players. That, and the typical 'how far do you drive, do you usually make x% of putts from y feet out' type questions.

Ladies playing for free in the Women's division is not a Gateway sponsored thing. Their 1st place trophy is, though, which is all they're competing for. If a lady player were to offer to pay for their player's pack I probably wouldn't turn her down, however it is very much not necessary and she'd only pay cost on the PP.

Women can certainly play in the equivalent non gender-protected division if they desire. In that case, the full entry fee applies.

As of now, TWC has Saturday's high at 56 and the overnight low at 42. Make sure to bring a light jacket for the glow round!

Well Dan

Any club that has a guy who is sending messages to 13 year old girls that he doesn't know  :D  is ok with me.  I just like to throw stuff.  Ever since I had a bad hair cut and, in anger, threw a wadded up ball of socks so hard at the window that it cracked, and then came down as my mom opened the back door, I have loved to throw stuff. That attitude still effects my golf game.  I like to hit stuff, trees, players etc.  Maybe I should play guts.  I no longer have the legs for ultimate.  I'll just hum the music to you and will not explicate the lyrics.  I think we will get along just fine as long as I remember to yell, "fore"

BTW Mirth- MMW does look pretty cool.  I checked out a few links on ye olde web.

PUTTIN' PEOPLE ON THE MOON
Mary Alice had a baby and he looked just like I did
We got married on a Monday and I been working ever since
Every week down at the Ford Plant but now they say they're shutting down
Goddamned Reagan in the White House and no one there gives a damn

Double Digit unemployment, TVA be shutting soon
While over there in Huntsville, They puttin' people on the moon

So I took to runnin' numbers for this man I used to know
And I sell a few narcotics and I sell a little blow
I ain't getting rich now but I'm gettin' more than by
It's really tough to make a living but a man just got to try

If I died in Colbert County, Would it make the evening news?
They too busy blowin' rockets, Puttin' people on the moon

Mary Alice quit askin' why I do the things I do
I ain't sayin' that she likes it, but what else I'm gonna do?
If I could solve the world's problems I'd probably start with hers and mine
But they can put a man on the moon
And I'm stuck in Muscle Shoals just barely scraping by

Mary Alice got cancer just like everybody here
Seems everyone I know is gettin' cancer every year
And we can't afford no insurance, I been 10 years unemployed
So she didn't get no chemo so our lives was destroyed
And nothin' ever changes, the cemetery gets more full
And now over there in Huntsville, even NASA's shut down too

Another Joker in the White House, said a change was comin' round
But I'm still workin' at The Wal Mart and Mary Alice, in the ground
And all them politicians, they all lyin' sacks of shit
They say better days upon us but I'm sucking left hind tit
And the preacher on the TV says it ain't too late for me
But I bet he drives a Cadillac and I'm broke with some hungry mouths to feed

I wish I'z still an outlaw, was a better way of life
I could clothe and feed my family still have time to love my pretty wife
And if you say I'm being punished. Ain't he got better things to do?

Answered a couple times previously, the discs are a mid 170's soft wizard stamped with the tourney design and an Element (roc-ish disc) ranging anywhere from high 160s to 180. The Elements came in all three plastics Gateway offers.

Saturday's glow round will not be using any of the temporary holes, so Todd, Damon, et al - you can pack up your baskets after the round if you want to take them home that night.
Otherwise we'll put them in the storage shed and you can pick them up at best shot on Sunday.

The glow round will be 24 holes, 2 rounds of 12 using the concrete and middle letter tees.

Doubtful. If the rounds get started around 10 like I hope then the lunch break will be from 12:15 to 1:15 and the 2nd round from 1:30 to a little before 4.

Times are, of course, dependant on turnout, organizational level of TD, weather conditions, and skill of players.

Maybe if we played 2x around the course without a break...

I would like to come down also but only if there is going to be a small field of pro's at least.

Yes, those wishing to play for cash or whose rating is higher than the Adv/Pro break will be playing in the Open division.

Terry, if he comes, would be playing in Open

People who are playing glow -

If you want to attach glowsticks to your discs we will have some clear packing tape available. However, it would be a good idea to bring your own if you can as it will help us get out on the course a little faster.

Glowsticks will be available for purchase as well, 2 for $1.

I lost a Orange Champ T-bird practicing before the round on 5. It's about 7 or 8 feet in but I couldn't see it.
Landed far enough away from the lake, but the wind picked it up and sent it scooting into the water.
I also accidentally left behind my wife's Leopard near the pin on 2 as I was helping her on the last hole. :( I'd love to get either of these back so if you find either of these, please be so kind to give me a call (630.357.7265) or send an email to discgolf via the domain krupicka.org

PS Thought it was a great tourney. Just wish that nasty wind wasn't there. Thanks for letting women play free. If it wasn't for that, I'm not sure if my wife and I would have traveled up for the tournament.

Take the advise from thoes who have loved and lost (pro monster, dr dyed banshee, etc.)

Taking the hyzer on 5 with any type of headwind/crosswind will result in a complete loss..

Unless the gods are kind enough to let your disc float upside down untill it reaches the other side (thank you jesus!)

I also lost one in the pond on #5. Didn't hyzer though. Threw it low and hard it burned rolled and then bounced into the pond. It landed about 8 feet out upside down. Floated about 25 feet from shore and sank. Fortunately it was a Wildcat and Discraft knows how to make more of those.

Mirth normally does bagtags but he said he was busy enough running the tournament. He said we were just doing round tags. I didn't play with anyone with a tag either round.

Mirth did an excellent job running the tournament! I know the Brakels and Chaumonts had a great time.

1st round was not fun; it was actually the 1st time I've ever gone into the water on 5, and it was an upshot  :o - didn't lose the disc though. Also managed to go into the water on 9 that round; on an upshot     . What a fun day! The wind was brutal but made some crazy shots. I heard Adrian Jr. had a shot on Hole G that ended up on Yorkhouse road :o . That's 550 ft. +. Saw a disc smack a house. Some some attempted rollers that were just ridiculous. My hyzer on #2 was just fantastic going out then landing on the other side of the tennis courts. The list can go on and on.

Mirth did a great job & the players packs were cool. Gateway has some awesome looking trophies. Lots of new faces & lots of women. I thought getting 30+ people to attend would be a success.

I found out of bounds 5 times but felt good about 2'ing 7 holes from the longs the 2nd round.

I too lost 2 discs.

Hole 5 on uspshot.
CE Firebird-Orange-Skipped in near the bench.

Hole 9 on drive.
Went right over the bridge.

I know that good temp baskets (like all the ones we used yesterday) blow over at about 50 mph. I didn't see any blow over, but later Lynn told me that she put I basket back up before her group teed off. So, I guess it was that brutal!

The first round I was contemplating whether to try to go over the creek on number 9 from the concrete tee. There were leaves blowing across the tee pad from left to right, leaves in the fairway that were blowing from right to left and the willows by the basket were blowing from left to right. I had no idea what to expect on that throw. But then I had no idea what was going to happen most of the time!  :D

Actually no, she pulled over and was checking her car out for several minutes. Didn't look like there was any damage, and Kenny ran over there to make sure it was ok.

Probably helped that it was rolling and skipped up into the car instead of hitting it from the air.

Whoa, that wind was strong.....  Mirth, only a great tournament with lots of players on a well-run day, could make a tornado seem like a day in the park.  Lost a yellow Champion orc on 5.  Lefty forehand went way over the road and over the fence and then blew back, back, it might be, it could be, or @#$%& it was, in the drink...
Have lost my best wind disc I tried to roll on my first hole.  After taking 11 I realized that was not too good of an idea.  Still, a riot.  thanks for the fun. The new Orc, thanks again Mirth, flew very well into the wind the next time I played H.  Did I see a lady riding a bicycle with a dog in a basket ride by when I was on the course?  And who landed a house on her sister?

Just one left?  I didn't grab mine when I signed up.  Also, the one my buddy grabbed had a really warped looking disc in it.  Is the Element supposed to look like that or did he just grab a messed up one?

Some Elements were a little funny looking due to the absolutely horrible packing job on Gateway's part. If you get it warm it should be able to get bent out.

Did someone fail to tell you about the player's pack or did you just forget to grab it?

That would be so ironic!  But I'm not saying why...

Does the irony have to do with the name "Gateway" or the fact that nickwc likes stickers?

I'm glad to hear that the event appeared to be very successful.

Also, thank you to everyone that had such a vested interest in my attendance (or lack there of) and well-being.  I know Kozy certainly got worked up as to who was eligible for this event.  Kozy - I think I will run an event and the only participants eligible to complete will be those that range from the age of of 38 to 40 and have a player rating from 948 to 950.  Hope you can make it :)

Yeah, it got a little confusing when I decided to let people who wanted to play for cash do so.

Hope to see you down in our parts at our next event sometime in 2005!
