Title: 2 Milwaukee Area Ace Races!
Post by: discglfr on August 25, 2004, 07:53:08 AM
I am hosting Discraft sponsored Ace Races on two different days in September.  The first is on Labor Day which is Monday, September 6th!  It will be held on a temporary course which will soon be a permanent course.  It's located in Germantown at Spassland Park.  For those of you who know where Dretzka is, it's just about 5 minutes north of there.

The second one is on Sunday, September 19th at Lime Kiln Park in Grafton.  Both courses will be very short and very fun for having an Ace Race.

I will be setup by 11 am and we hope people bring their grills and cookout at both.  If there is enough interest, I will host a putting competition as well as a skills challenge.  Relaxing, cooking out, and games will go on from 11 am until at least 6 pm.  The actual Ace Race rounds will begin at 1pm!  This will be fun for everyone so please contact me if you have any questions.  You can speak with me regarding registration or you can visit www.sportdiscs.com to sign up with NO additional surcharge.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Here is a generic flyer for the 2 events:

Terry,
I noticed on sportdiscs.com there is also an Elver location...do you know when this one is taking place?

Sounds like a fun time. Can you buy one package and play at both, or do you need to buy a package at each location?

I'll check the website after this. Can you give me directions to the park. A few of us will probably make the trip. Sounds fun Terry!

Hey there guys, I have UPDATED the link to now have it be a 2 page general flyer.  The second page is directions to both courses.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.  I NEED a count of people so I have enough packages.  Yes, I WILL in fact have the packages at the event!

Thanks,

Along with cooking out, having double disc courts available, a putting contest and lots of other fun things, we have recently added MINI GOLF to the list of activities. Dane is looking to get together a 9 hole mini golf course which will also be ready for competition on Monday. The winner will receive a mini basket!
Please remember to plan on random activities all day long that you can pay extra to compete in (and also win prizes in)! If you don't feel like extra competition, bring your grill, lawn chair, and food and just relax all day long! Games and registration start at 11 with the actual Ace Race going off around 1pm. You can show up for just the Ace Race or be there all day long, it's up to you!

I have somewhat composed a small list of 'expected participants'. I need to have a rough count of participants to ensure I have enough player's packages. PLEASE e-mail me if you plan to attend! Oh - did I mention the player's pack is worth nearly $40 alone? The winner receives over $200 in merch too!

Anyway, my confimred list starts with:

Mark Peterson, Mike Batka, Pat Hamill, Steve Held, Pat Sattler, Jon Van Deurzen, Johnny Rumble, Dane Miller, Ryan Hornickel, Rivers, Mark Brunner, Robbie Olson, Luke Reed, Kurt Raff, Brakels? Brett C, AJ Richardson, Eric Peterson, Kim Keen, Dan M, Sergio.

Does "mini golf course" mean using mini's?

Pardon my ignorance on this one.  :D

Yes. Mini discs into mini baskets. Usually a course is setup unless it's just a mini putting contest.

Brakels? There will be 2 of us coming up, I think. I don't think the munchkin is participating but Jon and I will :)

Mini golf will be optional and everyone will get the SAME mini to compete with.  Dane is running it so we'll have a few prizes for that as well.  First place is a MINI BASKET made by Dane himself.  It should be loads of fun.

Jon, I got your message about you and the misses attending.  Thanks, you're all set.

Dan - I haven't exactly determined the points JUST yet.  Probably 1 point for hitting metal and 3 for hitting an ace?  Something like that.  I think everyone will get 2 throws per hole.  It IS an ace race but it might vary slightly from the Discraft rules...shhhh. :)

See you all there!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sounds great...See you all out there!  Don't let a little chance of 'scattered storms' scare you off.  IF they do get to us, they will be very hit and miss.  Make sure you come out for all of the fun.

Mini golf, putting contest, and Ace Race!

We had a good time yestarday. Dan won his 2nd putting championship of the weekend nailing 8 of the 10 putts from various spots & scoring the most points. I tied for 3rd. The Ace Race was fun but brutally windy. I used up my only ace in practice but managed to hit metal twice. I think there were 4 aces hit during the 36 hole race. The mini golf looked fun but it was windy & heck & i'm terrible at throwing a mini. Someon shot a -2.

I had fun even though my mini got caught in a tree on hole #4 (Thanks to Mike for retrieving it for me  :D ) I didn't hit any thing but the wind was challenging! It was my first experience at an ace race. I enjoyed the putting contest too.

Definitely a fun event.
I, too, was shutout...although I hit a few trees  :P

Windy day is an understatement (if it can be). I seen discs fly backward, sideways, flip right over...interesting to watch.

All in all, a good time. Fun games. Just need a calm day to figure out what exactly the Proto disc can really do.

Every person I personally spoke to regarding the Spassland Ace Race said they had a good time on it.  The day DID have some wind but that didn't stop 5 people from hitting aces.  Todd "Kozy" Kozlencer ended up winning over $200 in merch and prizes for the day's efforts.

We also gave out homemade mini baskets for the putting champion and for the mini golf winners!  The putting contest consisted of a 5 station / 10 putt challenge that was a real challenge in the wind.  The 9 hole mini course was won by Ryan "Tee" Hornickel who won by 2 shooting an impressive -2.

I plan to duplicate a similar outing THIS COMING SUNDAY.  It will be held at Grafton's Lime Kiln Park and promises to be a good time.  The Packer Game IS going on but since the Ace Race only takes an hour for each 18 hole round, we'll have plenty of time to listen to the game, cookout, disc golf, play mini golf, and compete in the putting contest.  Please e-mail me and let me know if you plan to attend as we are looking forward to a great day with plenty of good times.  Again, I encourage everyone to bring out a radio or TV and their grill and we can enjoy disc golf AND the Packers.

2 Important links:

1st one is the flyer for the Ace Race which includes directions to Grafton:

2nd one is a Discraft sponsored survey.  They want you to provide feedback about the event and the discs.  They are giving away random PRIZES just for completing the survey.:

Jon,

You are planning on possibly coming up THIS weekend?  Awesome if you do.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions for how things were done?  I sometimes have a 'harsh' outer shell when it comes to suggestions because they typically are in the form of 'b*tching or complaining' and not actual suggestions or thought out ideas.  Please do let me know if you have any.

Although I'm VERY worried about a low turnout for this Sunday I guess it might not be too bad if we only have 10 people going for aces because I'll still have over $200 in merch to hand out to 1st!  Catch me back if you can think of anything.

Terry,

Looks like I probably won't be there. Becky wants to play women's league at Round Lake at 5pm and I don't think we'd make it in time.

Suggestions: hmmm.... I can't think of anything right off the top of my head. I really liked the layout of the mini golf. The OB made it fairly challenging. The rounds went smoothly. Some people thought that the break between rounds was overly long. Becky and I came to hang out all day. We cooked lunch and dinner after it was all over. We had no problem with the timing. One thing that I've found is that no matter how quick an event is or no matter how long a break is, there is always someone who wants it to go quicker and leave earlier.

Oh, I have one suggestion. Actually it's just a personal preference. I liked the putting contest. My personal preference is that a putting stations are setup and contestents put from each station in the best way that they can. Rather than have a mando station that is a straddle putt, just put the mark right behind a tree or some other obstruction. Same thing with the kneeling putt. The reason why I prefer having the putting contest like this is because I don't do a straddle putt. I do a step out upside down forehand or backhand flick depending on the situation.

Anyway, that's a really small thing and other people's opinions will vary so it wouldn't make any difference to my attendance if you changed it or not.

Anyway, it was a very fun event and I recommend attending it if you can.
