I've played 39 of the 67 courses in IL. There are several good courses i've yet to play. Here are my top courses.
1. Morton
2. Pekin
3. Rockford-New
4. Sterling
5. Mokena
6. Rockford-Original
7. Bradley
I'd list Rockford as the #1 facility since it has 2 good courses in one location.
maybe a bit partial, but....
1. rockford's old course - maybe the best manicured park i've played, big developed tress, great shots.
2. sterling - excellent layout, cool club members, water hazards, rod 'ripper' fritz's home course
3. camden - more of a fun course from the shorts, but the longs will kick yo' ass
4. rockford's new course - still trying to break a two down, keeps me on my toes everytime
5. pekin - i haven't played it yet, but everyone raves about it...
midwest area top courses
1. rockford old
2. lemon lake, in
3. token creek, madison
4. rockford new
5. heistand park, madison
6. dretzka, milwaukee
Have you made it further north than Madison? Stevens Point has some good courses, and Sandy Point is sublime.
Top 10 midwest courses:
1) Flip City, Shelby, MI
2) Kensington, Milford, MI
3) Hudson Mills Monster, Dexter, MI
4) Hudson Mills Original, Dexter, MI
5) Stoney Creek, Utica, MI
6) Earl Brewer, Grand Rapids, MI
7) Ludington Beast, Ludington, MI
8 ) Ludington Beauty, Ludington, MI
9) Cass Benton, Northville, MI
10) Grand Woods, Lansing, MI
Ooops, ran out of numbers before I ever got out of Michigan! :D ;) :P
Having played some of the courses Jon has not, I'd start with Jon's list and amend it as follows, substituting for the courses I've italicized:
Top 10 midwest courses: [all from longs]
1) Flip City, Shelby
2) Kensington, Milford, MI
3) Hudson Mills Monster, Dexter, MI
4) Hudson Mills Original, Dexter, MI
5) Stoney Creek, Utica, MI I'm thinking the redesigned Rolling Hills beats this now. And Midland too.
6) Earl Brewer, Grand Rapids, MI Robert Morris, Kalamazoo, MI
7) Ludington Beast, Ludington, MI
8 ) Ludington Beauty, Ludington, MI Ludington Goliath
9) Cass Benton, Northville, MI
10) Grand Woods, Lansing, MI Depends upon the layout and time of year but I'd go with Fitzgerald, Grand Ledge, MI, if the basket is on the island.
I think we need to find room for Hickory Hills, Traverse City, and Boyne Mountain if it is still a permanent course. Until you've been to Michigan, you have not played disc golf.
If I had time to travel outside Michigan, McNaughton and Northwoods from the back tees are great. Lemon Lake and Parkside are good courses too.

lol. both of youse on time out!
Sioux Passage Park in Florrissant (sad suburban St. Louis) has an awsome course. Of course, I was a much different player then. Any southern, Il or Mo. folks out there?
1. Palatine

9. Elver, WI
10. Parkside, WI
I must say, Wisconsoners may not be the best golfers, but they have some amazing courses ;)
Ive played both pekin and morton.. but I forgot which is which...
which one is the one that has the first hole that is barried in the woods and drops like 100 feet?
I think you're talking about Pekin.
When I played Morton, I don't remember what hole I started on, thus don't recall what holes were which - but it was a bad ass course.
I did however get plenty of time to practice Pekin before Peoria Open, and the first hole drops big time, and is behind a large bush/tree that blocks your path to the basket, it is then slightly tucked around a patch of woods..
Tough hole, but once you get to the back 9 at Pekin you're wishing for the front.
I think in a span of two days I lost five discs at Pekin during practice, two of the five were actually returned to me.
one is swimming
one is in some dense woods
and one that i won during the tournament i forgot about on a hole
oh well, great course
Ok I looked it up on pdga
Pekin is the one taht is really hilly, tough course
morton is the one that has the first hole that drops hardcore ( i only played like 5 holes there)
Next time i go down to ISU i plan on playing those again, definatly worth the trip
With regards to Rockford, the old course is far and ahead better. The last four holes on the new course are lame. It's the same shot four different times. They should have put two of those baskets out by the 600+ foot hole. On running down the lane of trees and another coming back some how. But I moved to Wisconsin voluntarily, so my judgment may be altered now.
Oh and towards the middle of the state, stay away from Urbana. The course is boring and the kids from the housing around the place, run out and pick up your frisbees. You are better off driving the 1 1/2 to Terre Haute, IN.
Those last two were my post. I forgot what happens when you delete cookies.

HA!!!!!! thats awesome Brian. I went to school down there and used to deal with those little bastards daily. I would give them some old plastic so they wouldn't steal my discs. I had to chase them down a number of times. A buddy of mine drove his car out onto the course one day to chase them down   I would agree, don't play Urbana.
My top 5 ILLINOIS COURSES
1. McNaughton
2. Sterling
3. Rockford (both are great)
4. Morton
5. Camden
honorable mention to Bradley and Wildwood (aka Klem Course as I call it)
CrookedSuperSoft!!!! your list cracks me up brother. If willow stream park is the 2nd best course in IL, then I've been wasting alot of time by not playing it ever when I live 5 minutes away :)
Diron, I respect your loyalty man. Most people wouldn't be able to keep a straight face when they say Adler is better than Token Creek :) I'm a homer too though I suppose with Sterling at #2. At least Sterling is 18 holes though!!!!!

I've played or walked all of those courses. All of those courses in MI are better than any one course in Illinois. Sterling has to be my favorite IL course.
I would definitely disagree with that. That kensington course was awesome, but Cass Benton left something to be desired. I would take alot of IL courses over that one. Not to mention you said midwest top courses, so there is no way that cass benton is ahead of token creek or hiestand for that matter, or dretzka. Isn't iowa midwest? Those worlds courses were awesome. Ewing is my favorite course that I have ever played.
Dan
Tell me about Dretzka. I will be in Milwaukee soon and am trying to figure out how to disappear for a hour or two. If I have a couple of friends who are even more casual throwers than I will they be over their heads? Thanks.

Dretzka has multiple pin positions, which can range from pretty easy to really brutal. There are 3 or 4 tunnel shots through some woods where you really need to keep an eye on where your disc is going.
It's a great course and if you're in the area you should definitely play it. It's a fairly long drive from downtown Milwaukee though, if that's where you're going.
There are also long & short tees.
QuoteThere are also long & short tees.
right, but 'casual' players shouldn't even consider the long tees... :P
Thanks. I found a written description hole for hole. It looks like the course can play to all levels depending on the tees used. If I get to play I will try the longs while my friends tee from the shorts. I still do not know where I am in Milwaukee. The people I am visiting live north of the city. This may be academic as I am not sure I will be able to get away or be willing to pay the price needed to get away. :P

Token Creek is a great course. I don't think I've played Hiestand yet. Dretzka is a very good course. Ewing is very nice also. I don't think that Ewing is the best course in DesMoines. Of the courses that I saw I'd give the winner to Walnut Ridge. I think Cass Benton is better than any of those. The elevation changes at Cass are fantastic. I also like the mix of tight woods and open areas. Probably the difference in our skill sets makes a difference in which we like better. I like the tight tough shots that Cass presents in the woods.
I was mostly just making a point with my post though. You can't have a top ten list of best courses in the midwest without a few Michigan courses on it.
My top Illinois courses:
1) Sterling
2) McNaughton
3) Mokena
4) Rockford
5) Morton
6) Bradley
7) Channahon
8 ) West Park (Joliet)
9) Bevier (I can't leave out the Bev!)
And an honerable mention to the 18 hole Adler course. Although it doesn't exist anymore it was in the top in Illinois in its time.
QuoteDiron, I respect your loyalty man. Most people wouldn't be able to keep a straight face when they say Adler is better than Token Creek :) I'm a homer too though I suppose with Sterling at #2. At least Sterling is 18 holes though!!!!!
Granted Adler isn't a very long course (token creek) but it's extremely techincal. Also, I do consider Adler an 18 hole course, even though it doesn't have 18 pins, just because I'm so used to playing the alternates.
Yes, I am a homer.
Token Creek reminds me of a longer, cleaner Fairfield, but without the short techincal holes.
Adler is good stuff man.

I understand that you think of it like that. I've probably played about 30 different alts at Buffalo Grove. Does that mean that I should think of it as a 30 hole disc golf course. I don't think so. Adler used to be an 18 hole disc golf course. It started as a nine hole disc golf course. It is a nine hole course currently.
Ask anyone who has played Adler leagues on Tuesday, they know the alternates and practice them as much as the front 9.
Its no "lets throw from here" at some crappy 200ft a hole course.
Adler is a 9 hole course, yes, but the back 9 is very established. Like I said, because I play there so often and practice the same back 9, it is an 18 hole course to me.

Soooo.. Adler, isn't a 9 hole course?
i play urbana about 2-3 days a week at least (which blows by the way) and we have several sets of tees set up there. short tees marked with signs, middle tees and pro tees- I play all of these on a regular basis, almost always with a round of shorts folowed by the mids. A few weeks ago we marked off two sets of tees to play the course backwards from different tee placements. A 9 hole course is a 9 hole course regardless of the amount of tees, but we will be playing a 45-hole league this weekend....
from what ive played, I like mokena or west park the best. I definitely am making a point to play sterling, parkside, adler, and whichever course is off of briggs st. in joliet, when i come home for thanksgiving.
Dude, the back nine at Adler are nothing to brag about. The cements are the only holes worth playing.

I wonder if you guys still use the same long tees that I used to play 4 years ago. Me and one other guy made those up, they weren't too bad really.
I definitely agree with you Jon that Michigan has many of the top courses in the midwest. I just want the person that I am voting for Illinois State Coordinator to show a little love for the beautiful courses that we do have in this state. :) Too bad none of them are north of chicago :o
Mr. Danimal
Wasn't bragging
Just saying they're very well established for a 9 hole course
But some of them could be better like alt to one could be farther back, same with alt to 7, they could do move alt to 6 behind the tee like 50-100ft almost by the road, alt to 9 could be in the middle of the ice ring, and 17 could be harder. But i still gotta say that adler is in my top 10 probably around 5-6

A vote for me is a vote for someone who has played most of the best courses in MI, WI, IN AND Illinois. Wilbur probably has also. I have an appreciation for good courses and am driven to add more in Illinois.
Adler presents a player with a great many challenges and some great holes. It needs some tweeking to be a great COURSE.
No question Jon
I thought i'd bump this thread since there has been talk of IL courses on other threads.
Peoria has by far the best courses in IL. Morton, Pekin, & Bradley are top notch. They have also added 2 short wooded courses with ICC & Eureka. Canton is another good 18 hole course. Within 30 minutes you can play 6 really good courses. Washington is not far from Peoria & is another 18 hole course. Galesburg & Normal are less than an hour from Peoria & Springfield is a little over an hour.
I still think Rockford has the best disc golf facility in IL. With two 18 hole courses on one site you can't beat it. Taking the best 18 holes from the two courses you get one of the best if not best 18 hole courses in the state.
Just played both Springfield courses and they are both nice. Lincoln is in my top 3 now.
Man, it is ridiculous how many 9-hole courses IL has  .

If you want to see what your game is really like, drive about 4 hours and go play Tower Ridge in Eau Claire, WI. Along the away up there or back you can play the Madison courses. Tower Ridge and Highstand will show what true elevation is like and what a real par three hole is like.
I have to agree with Jon about not being able to duece a hole. When I started to play I wanted to duece everything, however, as I play more tournaments and courses I want the challenge of having to play smart. I would rather have a 300'-350' hole that is wooded with elevation or a 424'-450' hole that is wide open. I love to blast a disc but there isn't as much skil required in the open ling hole. If I screw up, I can still get a three. However, on the wooded hole there is a good chance that a bad shot will be a hard three, if that.
If you look at it like this it might even make more sense:
I always say that the reason why disc golf isn't on TV is because there aren't enough disc golfers to be the audience of the show.
However, that is just the first step. We also need a more competitive sport. Par three golf is not as competitive arena as full par 72 course golf. Tiger does not compete on par three courses. Only one par three golf tournament per year is nationally televised.
I don't think disc golf on ball golf courses is THE answer either. Although it is nice, it is just one option.
The forest preserves around Chicago might hold the answer. I'd like to see the next 18 hole course in Illinois be a par 60+. A course with 12 par threes and 6 par fours would be a step in the right direction. But we need to find and procure the property first.

Wilcat Springs park in Hamilton IL is a sleeper. This is a very beautiful course. They are hosting a C tier event on September 24 and are adding $1000 to the open purse and $500 to the open masters kitty. The Juniours will be playing the smaller city course and could sell out.
1. I think you guys are over-rating Morton. I played there for the first time this last weekend and was impressed by the front few holes, 17, and 18...but that was about it. Those holes in the grassy area were lame, in my opinion. I thought they could have done much better...especially after seeing the first five or six holes.
2. I think you guys' are UNDER-rating the Rockford courses. My rents live in Rockford...so I actually enjoy visiting them now because I get to play those courses when I'm in town. Those courses are fantastic.
3. If you haven't played Sinnissippi and you live in Rockford...what are you thinking? Great course.
4. Geneseo is just as good (if not better...especially from the blues) as any of the before mentioned courses. There are every different kinds of shots here...and just enough elevation changes. You really need to play this course if you haven't done so.
Come play our QC Ironman on Sept. 18th. You'll get to play Geneseo, Rock Island, and Camden (IL courses)....as well as two great Iowa courses.

Brett,
I know what you mean about playing ALL the IL courses. I've resigned myself to trying to play all of the IL 18 hole courses. They actually just put in another 9 hole here in Oakbrook about 2 blocks from work. (sigh)
I've played Peoria w/the exception of Camden. McNaughton is awesome.
Look forward to seeing you all at the IOS events this year!
galesburg deserves a mention on this thread - it has the long shots, tight fairways, mud hazards, and is just a generally nice place to play. its not on the way to anywhere and i wouldnt recomend making a day trip there if you can save yourself 40 miles and play multiple courses in the quad cities, but if you do find yourself in that direction it is worth a stop.

Dude, where do you work? I work on Kensington in the 1420 building, essentially 2 blocks away away from the Oak Brook course as well! You should seriously check it out. It's a lot more challenging than Lombard (I feel) because of the need for high accuracy going around the trees.
Maybe we'll bump into you at some point out on the course! We try to go out there at lunch time every day, but we will sometimes play Westchester or do 11 holes at Lombard instead.
Scott
Scott,
I'm in one of the buildings in Highland Parkway, pretty much Highland & I88. I have checked that course out a few times & it is pretty challenging. I don't usually play during lunch as I don't like to be "funky" when I come back to the office.
It's more challenging than Lombard in respect to shot accuracy, but Lombard is a pretty good distance course. That's where I learned to throw a forehand roller. Now if I could only throw a backhand drive as far....
There's just something about not having 18 baskets. Maybe my experiences at Naperville have turned me off to them, but even if a 9 hole is decent the possibility for backup and course crowding is too much.

I don't think I want to know what it is to be "funky" when you get back heh. I drive by the Highland Parkway buildings every day on the way home from work :) My wife used to work on the other side of I-88, a little further East at Butterfield & Meyers.
Don't get me wrong, I love Lombard, and most days I actually prefer playing there. Oak Brook just has it beat with the technicality of the course. It will improve even more once the rubberized tees are installed (they spray painted the corners of the tees so hopefully the rubberized tees are going in soon!)
I've seen a couple guys do some amazing roller shots at Lombard (especially a really nice one on hole 19... wow is all I can say) I'll just keep working on my backhand for now :)

once you play geneseo that'll be on the top courses list - a very fun course and a whole lot of golfing right near by if you are in it for the day or a weekend.
anybody been to sterling lately? they made a pedestrian walking path that goes right across holes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. all shots from the tee are blind to this potential hazard. very poor design on the park districts part.
There's also a new course in Centralia. It's been there for about 5 or 6 months. It is sweet!!! Long with some good use of elevation and rivers. It's been put together by the River City Flyers out of St. Louis. It has an 18 holer and a 9 holer. If you are going to effingham, make time to travel the hour south to centralia. you won't regret it.

QCDGC just added an 18 hole course in Moline at Prospect Park. Very hilly, wooded, and reasonably long. They're having a tournament 6/17 playing a round at Geneseo and possibly a round at Prospect.
had to get in on this one:
tops::::
Jerhico; Aurora
Anna Page East; Rockford - gotta say I prefer this condition of this one to the West course
Campton Hills; St Charles (9 holer) can play in under 40 minutes - commute included!
Central Park; Oak Brook (9 holer)
Lewis University; Romeoville (9 holy)
Woodlands; Rockton
with the exception of Rockford, they are all rather short, but I don't have a 300' drive yet, I'm waiting on Innova to get their speed up to a 12 or 13!
I played Prospect Park in Moline two weekends ago and all I can say it wow. I loved that course, it has definitely moved up to top 5 for me. It's like mokena on steroids. the town (with the help of the Quad Cities Club) put it in for the anniversary of the park (25 years maybe? I didn't pay too much attention to that part.) All I can say is that it totally rocked and if you are in the area I would definitely get out there and play it.
Prospect is a good, tough course, but the flow could cause a lot of problems. Some of the fairways/pins/tees almost cross in a few locations, and the finishing holes are way to close to the community theater located in the park. I can only imagine what it's like when the park is full of chuckers nailing that building with every other throw on those holes.
Apparently, the QC club designed a sweet (& safe) layout that was changed by the city. Despite its problems, it's definitely worth a try at least once, after which you can check out the other QC courses.
(I did my best not to let my poor performance on this course influence in any way my critique thereof :icon_cry:.)
new course in centralia, need to come play. it will make your top 10

IMO,
dont bother with litchfield.
its a poorly designed 9 holer. 7 of the 9 holes have water involved, guaranteed to lose 1 disc each round on a windy day.
Never played there but if you are driving down to play in the St. Louis area don't forget to stop in Litchfield, Mile marker 52, to go to the Ariston Cafe. Ariston is an authentic route 66 road house with real homeade cooking. MMMM good! :P

Brett,
Don't waste your time at Nims Park in Rock Falls unless you're going to play it to say you've played all of the 18 hole courses in Illinois. My nephew could par some of those holes. He's 6... :P Thank God that Sinnissippi is across the river...
Quote from: Classic_ROCer on December 20, 2006, 08:35:06 PMDon't waste your time at Nims Park in Rock Falls
Never say an unkind word about the Nims! How many courses can you go to and say "I'm not leaving until I get an ace!" and then leave satisfied 15 minutes later? Or, better yet, how many courses can you play with only two putters and still shoot under par playing everything as a par 2? Nims golf rules!

Getting an ace at Nims is like dunking on a four foot rim...
a) You can't brag to your friends about it and
b) it's not getting you any closer to the Big Boy's league. Unless you're six...

Top 10
1. Foundations Park DG Complex, Centralia, IL
Wow! This can play as tough/long as any course in IL. Long/Short tees & Long/Short baskets. Possible improvements include cement tees and a bridge or 2 across the creek. Gateway Dave, If you read this how about donating 18 more Gateway Titans to keep 2 sets of pins in at all times ? >:D. There is a easier 9-holer in the same park.
2. McNaughton Park, Pekin, IL
As tough as any course in IL (Long Tees). Short Concrete tees, Long Dirt Tees. Has withstood the test of time. The back 9 is as tough as it gets. Possible improvements include cement long tees. You could argue this is still #1 in Illinois.
3. Highland Park, Joliet, IL
Got my first look at this course this weekend. Rough around the edges but I decided to stick it at #3. Since it's new there is still lots of work to do but i'm impressed! We did not play all the Blue tees but a round of all Blues would rival the difficulty of any course in Illinois. This course has potential to move up the list with cement tees and new baskets. Wide variety.
4. Wildcat Springs, Hamilton, IL
Awesome place to play. 2 new added holes this year. Awesome terrain and good mix. Possible improvements include another set of tees or alternate pin placements.
5. Lincoln Park, Springfield, IL
Added pin placements since I last played and difficulty level has stepped up several notches. Long/Short cement tees. One of the best maintained courses in IL.
6. Northwoods Park,Morton, IL
Another great place to play golf. Long/Short Tees. 17 & 18 are the best 2 finishing holes in Illinois. Great mix of holes. Possible improvement would be the addition of cement on the long tees.
7. Woodland Park, Collinsville, IL
Wide variety and fun place to play. Long/Short cement tees. Water on many holes. Possible improvment would be course directional arrows. Very hard to navigate if you have never played there.
8. Sinnissippi Park, Sterling, IL
Great course. Front 9 is awesome! Multiple pin positions. Back is long but flat. If the land near the river were allowed to be used (Where the alternate holes for tournies are placed) this course could move up the list quickly.
9. Community Park, Channahon, IL
Frank continues to improve this course every year. Long tees all have cement now. Shorts have had cement for a while. Most of the baskets have been upgraded. The BEST kept course in IL. The landscaping Frank has done is awesome! Each year this course gets a little more difficult. It was not even on the radar of my top 10 2-3 years ago.
10. The Oaks, Mokena, IL
27 holes of manicured golf. Rubber fly pads are awesome.

With the weather that came in last night we made a major detour. I was hoping to avoid snow on the ground. The STL area was on the edge of the front and I was hoping to get lucky. We left at 6AM from Gridley. The roads were brutal and were not plowed. We saw a few dozen cars in the ditch. After driving 45 most of the way we finally arrived at Alton and stepped foot on the course at 10AM. Due to the snow on the ground (1/2 inch), rough terrain, and lost disc we lost valueable time. We played Roxana, IL then headed to Vandalia. From Vandalia we hit St. Elmo. We were able to scout out the next course right before sunset. Just chilling here at the Super 8 in Carlyle. Kurt,
What did you think about Alton, Rock Springs? Were the tee pads dried out? We played with a thin layer of snow which was frustrating but I still really loved the course.
Alton, Rock Springs is awesome! We couldn't play hole 3 because the road next to the pin was under repair (oops! fudged my hole count!), but regardless, that course is a workout. The tees were fine, and the design really maximizes the available elevation. Great fun. I agree that it's one of the best in the state.
My Dad & I had planned on going south today for Beardstown, Manito, & Springfield. The weather sucked so we went North. That is the great thing about central IL. If you are willing to travel 2 hours you can usually find somewhere dry to play. We ended up hitting Ottawa, East Moline, & Camden 1,2. 310 Miles later and we are exhausted.

Wow! This can play as tough/long as any course in IL. Long/Short tees & Long/Short baskets. This is true golf. Possible improvements include cement tees and a bridge or 2 across the creek. I heard several bridges have been constructed since I last played there. Gateway Dave, If you read this how about donating 18 more Gateway Titans to keep 2 sets of pins in at all times ? There is a easier 9-holer in the same park and heard it's being expanded to 18 holes.
2. McNaughton Park, Pekin, IL AKA "McNasty"
Rough around the edges but I decided to stick it at #3. Since it's fairly new there is still lots of work to do but i'm impressed! The long tees rival the difficulty of any course in Illinois. This course has potential to move up the list with cement tees and new baskets. Wide variety. The course has been cleaned up a lot in the past year.
This course is going to get tougher when the other course is finished. 3 of the old holes are being used on the other course and replaced with 3 really sweet holes.
6. Rock Springs Park, Alton, IL
Terrain is absolutely awesome with every hole having some type of hill or slope. This course is very challenging with a variety of holes. They installed cement tee pads late this summer. Can't wait to get back! I thought the course design was very solid with a good variety.
7. Northwoods Park,Morton, IL
Another great place to play golf. Long/Short Tees. 17 & 18 are the best 2 finishing holes in Illinois. Great mix of holes. Possible improvement would be the addition of cement on the long tees. Possible elevated green somewhere in the orchard?
8. Woodland Park, Collinsville, IL
Wide variety and fun place to play. Long/Short cement tees. Water on many holes. Possible improvment would be course directional arrows. Very hard to navigate if you have never played there.
9. Sinnissippi Park, Sterling, IL
Great course. Front 9 is awesome! Multiple pin positions. Back is long but flat. If the land near the river was allowed to be used (Where the alternate holes for tournies are placed) this course could move up the list quickly.
It was not even on the radar of my top 10 2-3 years ago.

hey Brett? Thanks for the respect for McNaughton, but I have a question for you?
You think #17 & #18 at Morton are better finishing holes than #17 & #18 at McNaughton? Why is that? More trouble with the woods on 17?
I play both about the same amount each year, but seem to have a harder time finishing at McNasty than Morton. I have only taken a 3 on hole #18 at Pekin, 3 times. But have gotten 18 at Morton at least 10 times. I know they should both be considered 4's, but I have always played them as par 3's. And I know you said the best finishing, not the hardest. But what makes Mortons better than McNaughtons to you? Thanks, and Have a Happy New Year.
I'm only speculating here but maybe he likes Morton 18 better than McN 18 because of the tee shot for 18 at Morton? Its got elevation. You have to hit a line. Its easier to throw far here. You have a wide landing zone, but if you have a poor throw you have no chance for the birdie. 18 at Morton is a much more attainable birdie 3 than McNaughton.
18 at Mcnaughton is great, but you need to RIP it twice to get the 3.
I like 17 long at Morton better than 17 long at McNaugton as well. I think 17 at McN may be a little under appreciated though. Many people do not like it because you can't really get a clean, monster drive off the tee. It is more of a shorter drive to a spot to where you can get a clean, powerful 2nd shot. That isn't necessarily the most fun type of hole, but I think its a good one. Maybe just a little misunderstood (if a hole can be that?).
Now what about 17 short at both courses? Both par 4s? Or just McNaughton. Easier par 3s?
Man a 2 on 17 short on both of them courses feeeeeels good!

Doug,
Very good question. When comparing my opinion comes from the long tees at both courses. I rarely play the short tees at either course.
#17 long at Morton is a great hole. You have several options and that schule is nasty on both sides. It takes a quality tee shot to get thru the gap. You can play it short and safe on the 1st shot, get aggressive, or somewhere between. All have their risks and rewards. That green is absolutely nasty and making a decision to putt can lead to big numbers if you miss. I love the fact that this hole brings tough mental challenge on both ends of the hole. I rarely see this in disc golf.
#17 long at Pekin is an ok hole. I really dislike the positioning of the long tee. It handcuffs the throw and you really have limited options. When it comes down to it, it really doens't matter where your first shot lands as long as it's not blocked by the tree. It comes down to the 2nd shot. I do like the green and it can penalize bad putts as well. I'd rather see the long tee pushed back and longer than where it is. It's just not a fun tee shot to me.
#18 at Morton is probably one of the best holes in the state. The view from the tee pad is awesome. There is plenty of room thru the gap but it doesn't feel so large when you are trying to pump one down the fairway. The pucker factor is big. Although the fairway is plenty large the road to the right and the woods to the left comes into play on errant shots.A few years ago I was finishing 18 during a tournament. I was sitting at -8 on the tee. I threw OB and took a 5. After landing cleanly in the fairway there is nothing better than staring at the big pines behind the basket trying to get your 3. I think this is what separates Morton 18 form Pekin 18. The range seems ideal. There is a good scoring spread since 3 is legit and 4's, 5's, & bigger numbers come into play with the OB, Schul,e and green.
#18 at Pekin is a very fun hole. I love getting on top of the hill trying to rip a bomb. The tee shot is crucial to scoring well on this hole. There are many ways to attack the tee shot and avoiding the middle tree is the key. The rough near #17 tee can be disasterous and the OB road to the left comes into play. Plain and simple. If you do not crush a tee shot on this hole you are not getting a 3. It's just too long. During tournaments i've always taken the safe approach that i'm going to play a smart safe tee shot and take a 4. The back 9 is way to hard to give up another shot on this hole. I haven't seen too many 3's on that hole over the years. I personally have only 3'd it once and have taken mostly 4's. I've always thought about the option of moving the basket down the hill by the water or moving it back near or into the woods making it a par 5.
I do like both holes at Pekin. I just prefer the challenges and rewards of Morton 17 & 18. You can score a 6 on those 2 holes one round and follow up with 7 to 10+strokes the next.
okay thanks. Always fun to understand others input on these 4 holes.
It's a great feeling having McNasty 5 mins away and Morton maybe 15 minutes. Great to know these holes are thought of so highly from a Pro who has seen almost all Illinois courses.
I hardly play the longs at either course unless in a tourny. The shorts can be hard enough at Pekin. ;D

Dana, thanks to you as well. Like I told Brett. Any input is always great to hear.
My quest to play the rest of IL courses plotted out. I have a trip planned for next spring to knock out some of these. I need about 5 days to finish off the courses I have not played. If it were not for Carbondale I feel I could knock out the rest in 4 days.

Thanks for the info. Had no idea.
Never played it myself. My girlfriend is a social worker and has to go there once in a while, so she had informed me about it. I don't even know if it is open to the public.
Today was an awesome day. I knew it was going to be good when we left Kenny's at 6am and arrived on the course at urbana at 845. No traffic in Chitown whatsoever. No bugs and perfect disc golf weather. Quick recap.
Urbana--Nothing special. Short 9 bagger.
Danville-Awesome state park. Short object course but better than expected. Well marked and easy to play.
Charleston-Tee pads are awesome and some of the best tee signs i've ever seen. Solid 9 hole course with the land they had to work with.
Sullivan-The worst course in Illinois. Homemade baskets. I actually made one like them quite a long time ago. Several problems. The chain they used is too light. The twist ties are breaking and some chains jacked. They installed them super high. Oh! No tee signs or markings on where to throw. Brutal!
Neoga--4 baskets in a super small course. 4 tee signs marking 2 holes. 1 tee sign was missing. Just whacky!
Centralia-What can I say. Unreal!!!! Many improvements since I last played it. Next tee arrows on the ground by the baskets. Next next tee signs on the trees. A bunch of new creek crossings.
Tuesday
Eldorado--> Very sweet park with a pond. Thank goodness the park guy told us there were wood chip tee pads. They were not marked. It was a decent 10 hole park with some serious potential.
Carbondale Rec--Long open course right on campus. Very wide open and much longer than other SIU course.
Carbondale Lake--Shorter course with more trees. Decent 9 hole course.
Alton 9 Holer--Super short, very few obstacles, and recreational friendly course.
Alton Rock Springs--The new concrete tee pads are awesome. They also added a small rubber tee pad to the long tees. They were very grippy but small. What a fun course!
Beardstown--Very interesting course. The tee pads were awesome! Super long and grippy. If you wan to learn how to throw a roller this place is perfect. The ground was flat, hard, and mowed very low. This course was very long and had a few really good holes. Some nice pine trees to play thru on many holes.
Thanks Dave Owens for the place to sleep in Quincy!
Wednesday
Quincy--An average 18 hole course. Had a few fun holes but very repetive.
Hamilton--What can I say. One of my favorites. The bottom of the course has changed a bit. Holes 5, 6, 7 have some taller grass and rocks in the fairway. The area has had some massive rain and the floods washed massive amounts of rock into the fairways. Kenny and I spent an hour exploring back by the river.
Keokuk--Fun 18 hole course with new Gateway Titan baskets.Several memorable holes.
Fort Madison--2 18 hole courses in the park. We played the new course. Some very tough holes and tight woods. Very hilly and demanding. I enjoyed the varity of this course. Would have liked to see the other.
We were heading out of town the tire light came on. We pulled into the gas station and the tire was punctured by a small key. We put on the spare and headed to Dallas City.
Dallas City--Very good coruse for a school. There were some wide open easy holes but there were also many wooded and semi wooded holes that required good shots. We enjoyed the company of a worker who escorted us around the course. We would have not finished before dark if it were not for him. We put on a show. Several near aces off basket and chains. Huge turbo putt and great scores.
Instead of driving to the quad cities we headed to Western. We played a round of glow and crashed!
Thursday.
We got to the tire place at 7:30. Left Macomb at 9am and made a stop at Monmouth.
Monmouth--Short 9 hole course. Very beginner friendly. Played it to break up the drive. First time i've played it during the day.
Savanna--Decent 9 hole course. 2 of the holes (6 & 7) were not playable due to the high water and flooding.
Mount Carroll--OK 9 hole course. The flood really devestated the park and there is some massive work that needs to be done. The water was above all the baskets at one point. #8's basket was bent. There is debris all over. The sand from the playground was all washed on top of #3's tee pad. It was 3 feet of sand and elevated the tee.
Galena--Oh boy did we save the best for last. This is by far the best 9 hole course in Illinois. For those of you who have played Am Nationals or the Timber Ridge course at 08 Worlds this course has some similarities. Absolutely sick! Nice elevation and great views! I threw my longest drive ever or the 900ft cliff between 6 and 7. After finishing 18 we paid to ride the slide. What a blast!
http://www.chestnutmtn.com/activities_alpineslide.cfm
Thank you for all the updates. Sounds like a great trip.
OH man, my daughter and I did one of these slides up at Crystal Mountain in Michigan after I played the course there. It was a lot of fun and it happened to be free that day!!!
I started reviewing. I'm hoping to review alot of these courses over the next few weeks.

Played it today. Tee signs for every hole but #8. We could not find it. Nice new Gateway Titans. Must play baby!. Shot a total of 18 strokes with an ace and a circle 3.
Updated list.

2. McNaughton Park, Pekin, IL AKA "McNasty"
As tough as any course in IL (Long Tees). Short & Longs have concrete tees. Has withstood the test of time. The back 9 is as tough as it gets. Couple of slight tweeks to the long tees. You could argue this is still #1 in Illinois.
3. Camedn 2, Milan, IL
One of a kind in Illinois. Plays pretty much entirely in the woods. Championship calibur course that plays just nasty to the hardest pin positions. Has great elevation and nasty ravines. The concrete tee pads are huge. Chris Sprague did a great job with the design and the work crew did an amazing job to transform this course.
4. Highland Park, Joliet, IL
Rough around the edges. The long tees rival the difficulty of any course in Illinois. The baskets could be improved. Wide variety. The course has been cleaned up a lot in the past few years.
5. Wildcat Springs, Hamilton, IL
Awesome place to play. Very quiet and scenic. Awesome terrain and good mix. Possible improvements include another set of tees or alternate pin placements.
6. Lincoln Park South, Springfield, IL
Difficulty level has stepped up several notches. Long/Short cement tees. Great variety and a few fun new holes added. One of the best maintained courses in IL.

Terrain is absolutely awesome with every hole having some type of hill or slope. This course is very challenging with a variety of holes. Cement tees. I thought the course design was very solid with a good variety. Cement long tees would be a great addition.

9. Woodland Park, Collinsville, IL
Wide variety and fun place to play. Long/Short cement tees. Water on many holes. Possible improvment would be course directional arrows. Very hard to navigate if you have never played there.
10. Sinnissippi Park, Sterling, IL
Great course. Front 9 is awesome! Multiple pin positions. Back is long but flat. If the land near the river was allowed to be used (Where the alternate holes for tournies are placed) this course could move up the list quickly. The temporary 6 holes are going permanent this summer. This will move up my list. This course is a prime candidate for a 2nd set of baskets permanetly installed.
**Round Lake is going thru a total redesign. I have a feeling when it's finished it's going to be easily in the top 10. **
