The brain trust is hard at work planning the 2005 series. I need at least one artsy type to come up with some cool hotstamp art. I'd like to get going on this early so that we can get merch early and do casual sales to promote the series. Whatever you do will be surrounded by schedule text in a circle so keep that in mind. Also, you need to incorporate "2005 Illinois Open Series" into the design.
I will get started on a design. Could you get the text that will be in the circle to me?
QuoteI will get started on a design. Could you get the text that will be in the circle to me?
We are still working on the schedule. We won't have the text until we have a schedule.
When you have a schedule, can you post it or let me know.
QuoteWhen you have a schedule, can you post it or let me know.
We will probably be posting the schedule right here when it is ready. If you want to have a place holder in the mean time you can do a circle of text with the names and dates of the events from 2004.
any new courses
what ones?
The courses are still up in the air. A couple of the courses have not given their final ok and another course depends on whether a tournament 300 miles away is going to let us sanction our event.
Courses that have been approved.
UW Parkside, Kenosha WI
Shady Oaks Park, Streamwood
Lippold Park, Crystal Lake
Bevier Park, Waukegan
Fairfield Park, Round Lake
There is 1 final course that we are awaiting approval. I've had to revise the proposal & waiting back for a final yes or no.
And then if we have to flip-flop Streamwood and Crystal Lake, you should look into that too.

BACK to reality
If you guys haven't already - I think Mokena would be a good consideration
Yeah i would also like to see a nice tournament at wildwood too. :P
Fanning, your better at jokes in real life
:P
This isn't real?
Hmmm...
I figured someone would say something like that.
This isn't.... live?
Lets make Wildwood an A tier
I'd love to have a tournament at Adler Park. Who want to do the grunt work & contact the park district? Make sure you ask for permission to set up temp baskets.

Libertyville won't allow the setup of temp baskets. I have been thru this several times. The one tournament that Bruce and I did run there we setup one temp basket. Since then they have been completely against setting up any temp baskets at all.
damn trouble makers you guys are
lol

Jeez, what did you guys do that was so horrible?
Is it worth you guys putting on a clean shirt and sitting down to talk with them or is it just NIMBYland? Of course, after reading about Diron at Adler :P I can understand their reticence.

I have a good relationship with them. There is no problem there and we didn't do anything wrong when we ran a tournament there. They just don't want to have temp baskets because it would use other parts of the park. They want disc golf to only be on the disc golf parts of the park.

Are they still upset about the temp basket on top of the pavillion and the temp tee on top of the toilet building? They really need to move on and quit fixating on the past.

I'm just pointing this out so that you don't think that no one has ever tried. That being said, if someone else wants to take a shot at it, by all means please try. Perhaps someone else will have different results.
Haha! That was funny Bruce :D Cmon Jon, part of the fun of such good sarcasm is hoping that somebody WILL believe it  I was going to say they must still be upset about your temp hole that went over Milwaukee Ave.
I thought of a suggestion for the 2005 IOS today :o I had heard a couple complaints from some Pro players about the payouts maybe being too deep for the 04' IOS events (granted the complaints never come from last cash  ). I know that you guys just went by the PDGA suggested payout tables, but after I looked at alot of other events, it looks like its more common to keep the pro payout to about the top 1/3. At Fairfield and CL 5 out of 10 players were payed. I'm not personally a pro so I don't really know for sure, but I think alot of Pros like the idea of making a big score money-wise if they should win a tournament. I think if 1st place got a higher percentage of the payout in Pro then that would make other Pros more likely to come back to our events. And hopefully they will bring their advanced buddies along!
I think that it's funny to call it the Illinois Open when you have a tourney set up in Wisconsin.
Maybe you could have one stop be a two or three different 9 hole courses. It is probably a nightmare to make a tourney like this, having to either trust people to report on time at events or to move HQ course to course.
That is a cool idea having a tourney that could be like Warren, Adler, and Bevier in 1 day. Maybe we could try that as a club non-sanctioned event or something.
Question: Would it actually bother any Wisconsin players if a Parkside tournaments was called an Illinois Open Series Event?

That is just an indication of how open the series is. We're even open to running cross border events.
I think it is funny how every state in the United States feels much more united in general than they do in particular to the state they share a border with.

We already have the venues for 2005. Maybe if VH puts a course in we can think about 06.
Jon, what tournament? When?
Maybe I could try try again.
After all- you could setup about 2-3 holes in thoes woods from 2-4, there are alot of paths back there. Set one up by the old 18 pin, set one up like #17 that they use at leagues.. halfway there! lol.
I'm sure if we actually thought about it, it would be very easy to setup 9 more temp holes that offered a challenge, but were still out the parks way..

Several years ago, probably before you ever played, Bruce and I ran a tournament doubles tournament at Adler. 1 1/2 years ago was the last time that I approached L'ville about running a tournament. They were all for it until I asked about setting up temp holes. No. No. No. Were there responses. I asked three times. Each time I addressed the issue that they objected to. The last time they said it matters not what there objections are, there will be no temp baskets setup for tournaments.
If Somone can get an official press release for the series I will get it Published in The Herald.
How 'bout Highland Park? ;) They have a solid course just off of Clavey. 18 holes. What do you say, Bruce? Jon? :)
My bad! :o Only 9 holes, but I don't think there would be a problem adding 9 more.
I'm just the merch man. I can bring extra Skillshots for that kind of project, but since I'm not well positioned to help with design and approval, I leave those issues to Jon and Brett. They have a fairly well designed and almost entirely approved series in place for 2004. Does the park really have 10 unused acres that would work for a temporary nine?
QuoteDoes the park really have 10 unused acres that would work for a temporary nine?
If there's no soccer or baseball going on, maybe, but it's not worth pursuing imo.
This is Fink Park. There is a lot of land. I know that they use the park for baseball and Soccer. We would have to coordinate. The park is pretty open. The existing 9 uses the area that has trees. holes would have to be put at the fringe of open land and the surrounding woods in order to give it some challenge. It is a nice looking park. The last time I was there a soccer game was being played just to the left of the fairway as I teed off on 6 or 7.
QuoteQuestion: Would it actually bother any Wisconsin players if a Parkside tournaments was called an Illinois Open Series Event?
Wouldn't bother me any...except for the fact that of the 3 tournaments (6 total rounds) I've played at my HOME course, my best round was a glow round (-5) in the Big Paw this past year. Other than that, my best round was a -2 during the day.
Has everything been finalized through Parkside?

It's a fun course (especially since they ditched the infamous "saucers"), and frankly the closest course for me ;) , but there's already some mildly crossing/adjacent fairways on the existing 9. I'd say what's there is not challenging enough for a tournament - you really have to screw up to get a 4 on anything and even I've deuced half the holes.
I'm guessing that one might have problems with the PIB in Highland Park and ultimately it wouldn't be worth it. (although Ultimate has nothing to do with it. But seriously, folks...)
Might be fun to do leagues there one Sunday sometime, but probably before the weather gets nice and 'normal' people are back out there. There's a lot of land between the course and Clavey Rd. and several entertaining Skillshot holes could be constructed.

Damon, I'm with you. Anytime you want to play leagues at Fink is fine w/ me. The existing course is probably a bit easy for a tournament but there is a lot of land and tees could be extended. Yet, length is not the real issue. The holes are not too short. They are too open.

I remember Fink Park. Very parklike, flat, nothing extreme, no disc eating terrain, a great introductory course for mom, dad and the kids.
We have one park district that does not want to participate next year unless we act as their unpaid employees and run the event pretty much entirely for their benefit. Basically, every scrap of profit we make on a normal event, they want to take as an up front user fee that we pay regardless of whether the event is a success or a bust, so we are now looking for another option for that date. Brett might be giving negotiations another go around there, but their position did not sound like an invitation to negotiate.
With extended tees on some holes Buffalo Grove can be a good course and there is room for extra holes there. Tom Christiansen used to run the Buffalo Stampede there in an 18 hole set up.

Any updates on what courses and when the Illinois Open Series is going to Happen? Bruce? Jon? Brett?
These aren't 100% yet but pretty close. I need to work out some final details but all 6 seem to be a go. Hopefully they will remain that way.
Kenosha, WI
Lombard, IL
Streamwood, IL
Crystal Lake, IL
Waukegan, IL
Round Lake, IL
Brett,
How many IL/WI tournaments do you/Bruce/Jon/etc plan to run? I know there is the Bev. Blast and the three IOS's. Are you going to add a couple more? PDGA sanctioned? Hope so!
The 6 Brett posted will all be their show next year. AFAIK the Widdershins will also happen, likely run by me, and will be a GDSTour event again.

All 6 will be part of the IO Series in 2005. All 6 will be sanctioned.
Parkside & Bevier will be DISContinuum/Waterford Jr. Girls Events. We will need volunteers to work these events. Parkside is on April 23/24. We have a date in mind but are awaiting final response from Waukegan PD before I announce it.
Here is the status so far of these sites.
Parkside-> All details finalized. Nice work Mirth! 4-23/24
Lombard-> Just got the go ahead today :D . 5-28 & 5-29. I'm espceially pumped about this one. I've been working on proposals since September.
Streamwood-> All details finalized. Date TBA
Crystal Lake-> Still working out some minor details with the PD.
Round Lake-> All details finalized. Date TBA
Waukegan-> Waiting to find out about the use of soccer & softball fields. Date TBA
NIIIIICEEEE!!!!!!!! :P

QuoteThe Prairie Open at Parkside is on the weekend of May 28th and 29th, same as Lombard. Was that the conflict you mentioned earlier?
That weekend was a conflict but not that event. The Elver Open, B-Tier in Madison is the same weekend. We are going to offer Adv/Pro on Saturday & the Lower Divisions on Sunday so it does not conflict with either event.
I see a trend with the dates of the IOS 2005. Keep in mind that Women's Nationals 2005 is the last weekend of September.

I'm still waiting on a response from Waukegan & Crystal Lake. Once those 2 are finalized, the paperwork will be sent in to the PDGA & the dates will be released to all events. The goal has been to have this completed by January 1st. I think we'll meet the goal.
Thanks Brett!
Waukegan has granted us use of the soccer & baseball field again on the date I proposed to them. 5 of 6 events are ready to go. Just waiting final word from Crystal Lake.
Hey Brett,
Any new IOS dates finalized yet? I've got the Parkside event on the weekend of 4/23 and the Lombard event on the weekend of 5/28 marked in my calendar so far.

These dates still have not been totally finalized. Paperwork is being finalized but these could change. I hope not though. Here is what we've put together so far.
4-23/24 Kenosha
5-28/29 Lombard
6-25/26 Crystal Lake
7-23/24 Streamwood
8-27/28 Waukegan
9-17/18 Round Lake
the first two are AMs on Sunday and the rest AMs on Saturday?
When do you need the designs in for this? I would like to add one or two if its not to late.
Thanks.
Here is a design. I should have a few more soon. I would like to see some other designs from more people. Bruce when would you like to have the final design?

Did you play those two courses recently? B)

Yes
I think IL may only have 1 park that has 2- 18 hole courses that i'm aware of.
YOuza! Nice work indeed. Looking forward to this one. :)
Kira is hard at work on advance trophy production. We are going with micro basket minis like last year except we've figured out how to dye wood minis so that they look as cool as dyed plastic, so they will be dyed this year. We have 16 done, about enough one event, and 28 in production. I'm dying the 28 tonight.
We have found a really cool design for a quarter-toss micro basket but we are having trouble locating chain. If anyone knows of a source for chain that has about four links per inch, it is what we are looking for and what this other basket has that we want to copy. If we can find the chain this would be an actual basket that you could toss quarters at. Or $5 brass cash coins if you prefer. It would probably replace the current trophies, or become a first place trophy for some divisions.
So, where is it Brett? The suspense is killing us?!!!
my guess is rockford
final answer
I think Rockford is a good guess Doug.
ahh yess... the rumors are true! july 23 is the proposed date. im talking to the park district this week and next to get any kinks worked out. i think the name for it may be the 'forest city frenzy', or at least that's what people have commented on the most. if anybody has anymore ideas get them up soon because im thinking that the paperwork is going out today.
im really looking froward to working with the disontinuum crew to make this all possible. if anybody wants a hand in promoting it, sponsoring ctp's, or anything that would benefit the event i will not turn any help away, either pm me or e mail me at rockforddiscgolf@hotmail.com. thanks much...

Isn't this the weekend for Streamwood?
QuoteIsn't this the weekend for Streamwood?
We have switched the schedule around & will get that info out soon. Rockford will be 7-23 & Streamwood has been moved.
Streamwood got bumped, to August I think. Any schedule you saw was preliminary.
Greg, "The Frenzy" is cooler still. Less is more when naming tournaments. But I'm cool with anything you want to call it. We can call it "George" if that works.
To everybody, we are running a variety of formats and tiers within this series, so always check the flyer or website for information. For the first two, pros and advanced play Saturday. We have two events where everyone plays the same day. We have amateurs sanctioned at B, C and D at different events, so some events will have player packs and some won't.
Otherwise, our philosophy has not changed: we're running tournaments we want to play, generous tournaments for amateurs, 100% pay out for pros.
im not 100% on 'forest city frenzy' yet, i like it alot but it sounds like a soccer team. i kinda wanted to work with throwing '36' in the title because to my knowledge we're the first 36 hole park in illinois, but i couldn't get anything that would stick. no matter the name, its going to kick mucho ass. im working with some of the locals on getting cash money thrown into the pro purse so we dont have to pull it from anywhere else and im starting to contact people for big toss, ctp, and raffle prizes.
it might be confusing to throw '36' into the name when i'm assuming there will be some temp holes out there, so it might be like a 48 hole park for the tournament. where did u get 'forest city'? just curious if thats a term thats used out there commonly.
Quoteim not 100% on 'forest city frenzy' yet, i like it alot but it sounds like a soccer team. i kinda wanted to work with throwing '36' in the title because to my knowledge we're the first 36 hole park in illinois, but i couldn't get anything that would stick. no matter the name, its going to kick mucho ass. im working with some of the locals on getting cash money thrown into the pro purse so we dont have to pull it from anywhere else and im starting to contact people for big toss, ctp, and raffle prizes.
Just an fyi, you can count ctps as prizes when reporting to the PDGA. You cannot count things like raffles, jumbo tosses and lunches. That doesn't mean that you can't do them, just be aware that you can't include them as part of the payout.
years back, like in the fifties and before, rockford was well known for how many tress we had which coined the name forest city. but some tree disease came along and killed off alot of our oaks so the name kinda dies off with that. im not really sure if anybody outside of rockford would make the connection of us being the forest city, but its something that rockford has/d alot of pride in. as far as the 36 thing, alternates are being added so that kinda defeats the purpose of it. i dont know if you circled the park when you were there, but there is alot of land on other side of the road that has a creek running parrallel to the road, given the park districts permission i want to have six to nine holes added over there.
yeah i have seen that land over there and there is alot of room for some sweet temp holes. also, i know in the past events there they have had some good temp holes across the street from the old course just on the left hand side as u drive in to the park. now that i know about this forest city nickname, it seems like it might be a cool thing to work into the name. i wouldn't worry so much if outsiders don't understand the name.
i plan on doing the raffles and jumbo toss just for fun, give everybody a chance to get a little something...
Forest City Fling??
QuoteForest City Fling??
naw, Fling gets used a lot - Frenzy is better ;)
Forest City Frenzy makes more sense in that context.
I think we can announce that we are going with the flow on the new PDGA trophy-only option. We will offer the amateur trophy-only option at 1/2 the entry fee plus the PDGA fee and course fee at courses that have a course fee. So if the Intermediate entry fee is $20 at a C-tier with a $1 per player course fee, you could play for trophy-only, plus CTPs, for $13. I think the way the PDGA has set the price on this, if large numbers of players play trophy-only, there will be more CTPs. If players go for the full fee, more of the tournament value winds up in the am payout.
what gets a better turnout between the two?
Quotewhat gets a better turnout between the two?
The turnout will probably be the same if not maybe adding a couple of people that did not have the cash to play or think they had a shot to cash at the event. The trophy only is just an option you choose. I doubt many will choose but some may.
Let's say Roy shows up & he is a 916 rated player. He has to play advanced. I'll use former top advanced players from IL. Sean Butler, Dave Shaw, Pat Blake, & other top advanced players show up to play. Roy says "man, this sux, I have no chance of cashing". Instead of playing the $35.00 advanced entry fee he could pay 1/2 which is $17.50 + $2.00 for PDGA Fees. So basically he's saving $15.00 to play an event he doesn't think he can cash in. If someone is debating over price of entry, this could make their decision to play a yes.
BTW, we are going to test the market with the trophy only concept at the 5th DISContinuum Blast! There will be no prizes for Ams except CTP's & trophies. The entry fee will be small. We'll are going to find out if the idea will be popular or not.
This is confusing so I'll explain it again. At all of our events except the Blast, an amateur has the option of paying a full entry fee and playing for prizes, or paying a half entry fee and opting out of prizes. Either way he is playing for trophies, ctps, and pdga points and ratings. The trophy-only option is something the PDGA approved for PDGA play this year.
There are a lot of reasons why you might pay the reduced entry fee. If you are planning on playing a lot of tournaments you might want to save some money from time to time. If you don't really need more stuff and don't like hawking it at the course, you might rather pay less. Whatever your reason, the trophy-only entry fee is priced so that the trophy-only player is providing about the same financial support towards sanctioning, insurance and trophies as the guy playing for prizes.
At the Blast the entry fee will be something like $10 per player. If we have good attendance there will be a lot of CTPs. However, there is no amateur payout. If you played any of our events last year you know that when we have the attendance to pay for CTPs they aren't all "CTP"s. Some are longest drive, longest putt, birdie bounty, etc.
Would a basket throw off for a donated basket be reportable to the PDGA? (Like 6 shots for 5 bucks). :)
And from those of us who play becuase its fun and have no expectation of winning either brass or green, thanks.

You're right...stupid suggestion. I was wondering why it stuck in my mind and then I seen that Parkside has a "Spring Fling" Thanks for the reality check, Damon. :D

One year there were two "Flings" in Michigan being run by different clubs in different towns in different muddy swamps in the same Spring month, so we decided to mock their originality and we called our spring tournament the Spring Thing.
They did not seem to get the mocking part, which is always part of a good mocking. I suppose if you were to all show up for a disc golf tournament wearing orange t-shirts and plus-fours, I would just think you had suddenly gotten a sense of style.
Thought I'd post some trophy work. For those of you who have not seen these live and up close, they are dyed wood mini markers with tiny wire sculpture baskets. In the picture two have not been basketized yet and one is fully trophyized.
Now we've done it. We have produced our first Mock 3 Quarter Toss Micro Basket. This is a 12 chain basket with six inner and six outer chains mounted on a temporary stand suitable for putting with US Quarters, $5 Brass Cash coins or similarly sized coins. I'm wishing I had a digital camera right now! With audio! When you score on one of these it rings like a bell.
We will trophy-ize these and give them out sparingly to first place winners in well attended amateur divisions.
Here it is. I had a friend of Diana's take a few pictures with her digital camera today. I now have a library of digital pictures if you need one for your website, Jon. I also bought parts for three more. I'm going to build a prototype that costs $6 less and see what you all think of that one too.
Nice job on the tropheys!
Nice job, Kira!
Hey Guys,
I am the recreation supervisor in charge of the Disc Golf course in Crystal Lake, IL. We have an event planned for 6/25 and 6/26. How is this run and what do I need to provide. I have tried to send out many emails to different PDGA officials and have not gotten any replies. Could someone please fill me in? I would also like information about starting some leagues out here at our course. A email or phone call is probably the best way to reach me.
Thanks,
Joe Davison

Hope I answered all of your questions on the phone.
Here's some news you can use.
The Innova shipment arrived today. I had specific requests for KC Pro Rocs and KC Aviars. I got them for IOS #2. A lot of you wanted the Pro Starfires. I have about 30 of them. The Sidewinders went like hotcakes. No wonder. For Intermediate and Rec players these are the shizzle. I got another 30 of those. Somebody wanted 150 Vikings and if she shows up on Saturday she'll get them. I also got some 150 Beasts, 150 Orcs and 150 Valks. Plus I have some 150 XLs and some 150 Flicks. We now have a lot of "chick plastic" so bring your wives and girlfriends. [Note: do not bring your wife and your girl friend to the same event!] I also reloaded on DX Beasts and DX Orcs and anything else that looked low.
Oh, and I got ten Innova Flex Fit hats. I tried one on to see what the big deal is. Now I want one. Two black, two dark blue, two medium blue, two tan and two red. These are 20 funny but tell whoever is covering merch that Bruce said you could get a $5 discount if you are paying cash.
The Discraft shipment came in awhile ago. Kyle's "IO7 Thrower" came out really cool. We did not use that nasty map artwork that Jon and I collaborated on. Jon's colormax brass cash stamp turned out great too. If you have intermediate/rec power and would like the glide of a Crush but Crushes are a bit overstable for you, these white Colormax Z-Crushes are the bomb. I was throwing one lefty at league today. On hole 12 at Firefighters I put up a buck for the long drive and Jenny ripped one about 275 and said, "Beat that!" and I was thinking, "There goes the buck! Then I snapped that Crush and I was basket long [long basket position] sitting next to basket 17, somewhere around 360-375!
innova flex fit hats! sweet!
Give me a Sidewinder, a White Z Crush and a Flexfit hat and I am ready to suck lefthanded in the OMB division at Lombard!
14 day forecasts don't mean jack but there is no snow and no scorpions either: http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-page3...day=11&metric=0 (http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-page3.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=1&traveler=1&zipcode=60148&fday=11&metric=0)

Digging through the new stuff and putting on price tag stickers I found some surprises: a few 150 Champion Valks and 150 Champions Sidewinders. There were also some 160ish Champion Beasts and Orcs for those of you who have learned to appreciate the lighter plastic in your advancing years.
I'm bumping this because I want to harvest those pictures, and here they are...
But while I'm here, would anyone like to see the quarter toss basket trophies make a comeback? Maybe i could produce some for tournament overall trophies.
