Title: Ratings Updates
Post by: Dan Michler on December 21, 2004, 07:05:01 PM
Am I the only one that thinks these ratings updates need to be handled better?  I respect the fact that people are volunteering their time to do this and I accept that for now we aren't going to have automatic continuous updates (we should).  But, when it is stated when the update should be coming to hundreds of eagerly waiting dues paying individuals, it should be handled a little more professionally than to constantly be behind schedule.  I'd be embarrassed to continuously deceive so many people as to when the update will happen.  If your not sure when you can get it out, then say so!!!  This will keep me from checking the site every half hour for days on end.  Not that I'm concerned with my own rating this time around, but I like to look at alot of other people's ratings because for some reason I find that entertaining.

I'm sure there are plenty of disc golfers out there that would be willing to help do  the coding to allow TDs to enter the info through forms online and have it all calculated right into player ratings.

I went up 9 points, better than going down like I did last time.

Brett, out of curiosity why is only the first round of the Blast rated? Same players, etc so it seems odd that only one round would get a rating.

Weeeeeak

Best round - 1003
Worst round - 813

Nearly 20 strokes difference, just call me Mr. Consistant ;)

Congrats Brett for hitting 955

I have no idea why 1 would get rated & not the other. I'll e-mail the PDGA.

It looks like we were really close on the number of gators needed for ratings at the Saturday Blast.  In the second round a couple of our gators look like they degatorized themselves by shooting 50 points below their rating.

Degatorization is a big problem.  I've degatorized myself more than once.  Carrol Marty comes to mind.  Next year if I have a tough round capitalized by like a 4 putt, I will just yell 'degatorization complete'.  Call me the Degatorizer.

You might be the Autodegatorization Master.  You've done it twice since Pro Worlds, at Chanahon and Fairfield.  Maybe I should check my own stats before I go here...

So, why didn't the PDGA rate either round of the Intermediates at the Prairie Open this year?  There were 16 people with 800+ ratings.  Don't tell me seven of them shot 50 points off their rating?????  Maybe in one round, but both rounds????

A lot of those guys were not gators at the time because they did not have eight rated rounds.  I did not go through every name but I checked about seven and only three might have been gators.

The QMCS [Question Mark Conservation Society] has been alerted to your post by the way.  They don't like it when three questions are punctuated with ten question marks.

So, the gator criteria is as follows:

1. Must have 8 rated rounds before the beginning of the tournament.
2. Must have an 800+ rating before the beginning of the tournament.
3. Must have scored within 50 points on either side of your rating at the time of
   the tournament.

Ratings criteria is as follows:
1. Must have at least 10 gatorized players for the PDGA to officially rate those
   players.

Why is it called "Gator"?  Short for something?

Does the PDGA update everyone by "hand"?  If so there has to be a better way.  Like I was saying, get some grad. student to write a computer program to do it for the pdga, and they randomly check players to make sure that it didn't mess up.   If it only takes 1,200 or 1,600 to check the whole US population than it should take less for the PDGA.

Pro-pig-gators are pros who have their rounds in but never show up on course work days.

The big part of the human work is making certain that the TD report is correctly filled out.  After that it is mostly computer generated.  Some of the potential errors in the TD report cannot be detected until you run the ratings and see how they come out, and I think they do that part by human analysis rather than by computer program.

propagator

Post by: damonshort on December 29, 2004, 07:43:42 PM
as mentioned earlier, only requiring 5 propagators in 2005 should help get more folk in the pool.

I figure an inaccurate rating is better than no rating at all, everything shakes out eventually, and if you're paying dues in part to *get* a rating that you're entitled to a rated round in a sanctioned tournament regardless of who else may or may not be there.

Everybody into the pool... yahoo....

watch out for dem gators though.

Tomorrow is Dec 30th and it'll be 50 degrees and I have to work. Arggh.

New ratings are up if you didn't know.  Also the Mid-Nationals Invites went out.  Looks like I have to get on the waiting list.

Kelsey leap frogged over Sheila Calhoun and is now the #6 amateur woman in Michigan.  She is only 2 points behind her next intended victim.

Went from 908 to 913. I have to make sure I don't break 915 so I can stay playing the White Division  8)

it's whacked, too, but to everyone's benefit. The same score was rated around 40 pts higher the 2nd round, and I don't recall the weather being any different.

Between that and the 2nd Parkside round getting rated, I actually went up 2 big points, which I wasn't expecting.
so, I'm not complaining....

If the second round scores are producing higher ratings it means a lot of you tanked or ran out of gas in the second round.  Ratings are generated off the average score and the average rating and in this case they did them off about eight gators, so blame them!

like I said, I'm not complaining (had a much better rating the 2nd round). I also recalled while driving home tonight that I think we played different holes the 2nd round anyway - I remember thinking I shot better on a more 'difficult' layout that day...

Looks like I'll also be getting an invite for the mid-nationals.

Rating the second round at Parkside moved me up 4 points. 8 more and I'll be at my goal for last year of 900. All I gotta do is make one more putt per round.
