Title: 2005 DISContinuum Bag Tag Challenge

Bag tags will be distributed on 01-09-05 as long as they arrive on time. The process will be held after leagues approximately 1:00PM. If the tags don't arrive as planned another league date will be selected.

For those of you that don't know, leather tags have been ordered. They will be laser engraved. Mirth, can you please post a picture of the tag on this thread?



Here is how the tags will be distributed.

50 Tags have been ordered & they have now sent 6 free tags because of the late arrival. So there are 56 total tags now.

A)
Anyone who has paid their 2005 membership and is present for the distribution after leagues will draw a ticket. You can pay dues that day & be eligible for the drawing.

Here is the scenario. If there are 10 paid members present, there will be 10 tickets in the hat. Each ticket will represnt tags 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. You match your ticket to the corresponding bag tag.

B )
Anyone not present but has paid their 2005 membership will participate in the 2nd drawing.

We will cotinue to use the scenario above. If there are 10 paid members not present there will now be 10 tickets in the hat. Each of these tickets will represent tags 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20. The club officers will be selecting the tickets. They will be handed out at a later date or mailed to those members who are not in the area often.

C)
Using the same scenario above. The last 30 tags are still available. 30 tickets will be placed in a jar. #'s 21 thru 50 will be in there. As membership/tags are purchased, that participant will draw a ticket. They will match their ticket to the corresponding bag tag.

There is a good possibility that the tags will NOT be here this weekend. They are being shipped today. Sorry for the delay. If the do arrive, Mirth will post and the drawing will take place this Sunday. If not, the drawing will take place on 01-16-05.

They were supposed to ship yesterday, but Ohio got hit pretty badly with ice from the storm that dumped all the snow on us. Apparently UPS didn't make their pickup... Anyhow, we'll have them at league on the 16th for sure.

Shawn, regarding your questions - basic bag tag rules apply... Challenge is manditory at tournaments and singles leagues within groups, not required at doubles during casual play. Of course, challenges during casual play are highly encouraged.

Our vision this year for the challenge is one for fun and to see who can defend the low tags successfully all year... not for people to run into hiding if/when they win a low tag because there's an end of year prize attached to it.

The tags are only available with club membership, not separately. In past years we've done other freebies with membership... discs, minis, cheap tags. This year we decided to get good quality tags that we hope  people won't just toss at the end of the year because its all grody.

I'm in the process of putting together a sanctioned event for club members/bag tag holders. I'm hoping I can work things out. This would be the big benefit of holding a mebership/tag this year along with access to the club members only section and discounts on club merchandise.

I have not discussed this to the board yet but the fees may possibly be paid by the club except the $5.00 non pdga fee.

I think Shawn might be talking about something closer to the end of the year, like December perhaps. At least, thats what I got out of 'end of the year club championship or ice bowl event'.

Not a bad idea, IMO. I realize the club members only invitational has this in mind but I don't know if it will happen late enough in the season.

It would be uber kickass if we ran a few during the year, in addition to all the other stuff already on the schedule. I know finding volunteers to run them is difficult...

In other news, the tags shipped via UPS today! If UPS' ground travel time estimate is correct, they should be on my doorstep on Tuesday.

The drawing was held today after leagues. 14 played then 2 more showed for the drawing. Adrain Jr. showed up at the club meeting so he got #17. Tom S. was the lucky dog that drew #1.


Maddisen B. drew #'s 18 thru #32. We went right down the list of members. Here are the tags that members who were not present received. We will try to get these to every player. We would like to avoid mailing them if possible.

Well that's true.  I wouldn't mess with her.  I figure it won't be long before she can throw farther than me and kick my @##% She planned to throw a Panther and an Aviar.  She might "throw" this weekend after soccer.  Fortunately, she is no longer limping.

As for the girl on girl action, I am sure we can set you up with a few internet sites.  However U13 soccer may not be what you were looking for. :P

Hey All,

The bag tags look SUHWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way Better than the slice of cheese that Hornickel had his students make for WI last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone is coming up to the big chill, I'll be up there not playing but will stop up in the morning so whoever has the Tag & membership cards I can get them then - Wife got tickets for Whose line is it anyway for my B-day.  SHe didnt know about the Big Chill and I didnt tell her so I guess its more my fault than hers.

Note--my opinion follows. It is not meant to represent anyone else's opinion. Your opinion may vary. I respect your opinion even if it differs from my own.

I do not think that people should be adding anything to their tags with pen, ink, dye or whatever. They are meant to be traded in friendly contests and the person that might win your tag might not want your changes on their tag. Also, there is no religious meaning to any part of the tag. In particular the Disc Golf Evolution Fish represents the evolution of disc golf and nothing more.

I think Becky has a top 5 tag. I played her for it two weeks ago at Palatine. I gave her a stroke per hole but only beat her by 8 strokes, so she kept it.

How does the bag tag challenge work at tournaments? I understand that everyone puts in. Low score takes low tag. Is there any handicapping between divisions or males/females?

We've never done handicaps in tournaments but we also don't require everyone to put down their tag in the tournament. Only tags on the same card during a singles tournament have been required in the past.

I'm new to this but isn't there a modest amount of handicapping insofar as the people in your group are in the same division?  ie.  I will not be playing with Brett or Dan but with some other rec player ( who will still take my tag B) )

Last year we collected tags at each event from all tag holders. There were no handicaps. We used total scores. It seemed to work pretty well.

I would like to request a bag tag challenge ruling from the club officers please.

At Manitowoc over the weekend, there was a small group of club members/tag holders present. Prior to the the 1st round there was no discussion of a tag challenge. At lunch, another member challanges me to a 2nd round tag challenge which I decline. After the round this member (who beat me) demands my tag and will not take no for an answer claiming I am not allowed to decline the challenge. In order to avoid the ensuing argument, I turn over my tag and reluctantly take his.

If this is an appropriate challenge as determined by the club, then I will no longer carry/display my tag. The incident nearly ruined a fun road trip to one of my favorite courses.

The old rules look fuzzy, but it's a *game* for crying out loud....  ;)

he should have never turned it over...  the rule is only if on the same card or if you agree to play if noone on either one of  your card's has a tag.

you cearly did not agree, so it is still your tag.

Damon, by the way...   this is more then, "just a game."  it's an addiction and you all should get some help..  :D

Mitch, I was informed that you sent an email questioning the bagtag rules. Although I have a witness that the bagtag challenge was not declined, please see club officer Mirth's Jan 7, 2005's posting stating,

I suspect that Bruce Brakel could draft a sample legal agreement that all club members could sign and we could have this notarized prior to the commencement of this highly competitive competition. (Even if it was for bagtag #34).

If you desire not to carry your bagtag for future competition and keep it in your purse, you are really missing the spirit.  The goal of the bagtag competition is chasing the top numbers and where numbers reside during the year.  It really comes down to the end of the year.

Rather than relying on rules of avoidance, lead by example. One of the Discontinuum players at Oly Fields beat me, we had no discussion of bagtags and when we compared how he did compared to me, I freely handed him my bagtag #10.  He was an amateur and it was one of his first tournaments. I suspect that the number meant more to him and I will have other opportunities. This is the essence of bagtags!  You should be banned from bagtag challenges for your actions (or non-actions) at the end of 2004.  To hide with one of the top four numbers for months is unacceptable and the specific problem the club struggles with the bagtag challenge. Don't worry, I will not challenge you to another bagtag competition and do not plan on playing bagtag next year.  You will be safe and you can take up knitting.

Dave,

Perhaps I am missing the the spirit of the bagtag challenge. I enjoy carrying the tag as an identification of my membership to a worthwhile organization. Other than that, I would clearly prefer it if there was no competition attached to it. For a Pro Master player to beat a Recreational rated player at tournament is certainly no accomplishment.

Had I willingly accepted your challenge, I would not have made an issue of it. I was fairly sure at the time if we were not on the same card I would have every right to decline.

As far as last year, I played two casual rounds of golf the entire year. One was at Bevier at which I gave up my lower number to Spike. The second was with Dan and Brett in mid November at Deerfield, and when I challenged them it was merely tounge in cheek and never expected to come away with #4. I never hid as you suggest, in the following weeks (not months) my opportunities to play other than leagues were non-existant.

i will be bringing #  7 to streamwood on SAT

shot +3 there last weekend

left several putts on the course so if i putt well i m going out on a limb and i ll predict i should be -6 for the day

if any of you can make it down here i would love to take a few challenges on.  my car has been a bit messed up, so getting out of town is a bit of a problem.  but i will make the extra effort to honor any challenge given.  chainmeister is right on in saying that sunday mornings are good for me, just give me the heads up a few days before hand and we can meet before or after doubles.
