Better late than never my first course in Chicago is a GO.This course is inside the city limits and will be great it is a midlength ex course.I hope to have it open in march weather permitting.Never worked an ice augar.I will look forward to meeting all the locals and playing the new course.More details to follow.game on
congradulations! if you need any help give me a holler...
Why did we have to go through this reese guy to get this course?
Secondly, how long before this course gets pulled? Because nobody will want to drive all the way into the city to pay a bunch of money, to play a game that you can play for free most anywhere
cuz nobody pays to play token creek or sandy point....
will this have similar prices to token and sandy point? i think token is like 50 bucks for a yearly pass.
I don't know what the prices will be to play, my point was more along the lines that there are people willing to pay to play on a course that is kept in top notch condition.
I'm looking forward to this course. Playing on a ball golf course is very unique and much different from Par 54 golf. Riding in carts is fun. I probably won't be able to play this course often since it's in the city but i'll get there occasionally. Playing disc golf on a privately owned course has it's advantages. I'm assuming this place will be kept up pretty nice since it's a golf course. I get tired of looking at trash, tagging on tee signs, and getting bombarded by discs. I'm also looking for a place to practice my roller this year.

oh man I hope so..... (since it's about 15 min from my house)
Whoa!! I sure hope this is correct. Its about the same distance for me.

It cost $40 per year to play Token. It is money well spent on my opinion. Seems like the money they take in goes back into the course.
Fairways are mowed every Friday. Baskets moved every other Saturday. Trash picked up daily. New split rail fencing was put up along some holes last year.
The $4 charge seems to keep the vandalizing rifraff off the couse too.
And at $4 per day I got my $40 worth by the second week it was open last year.
It's 7 minutes from my door to the first tee.
god i wish there was a course like token creek 7 minutes from my door. that would be sweet. that's cool that you will have a course close to u now damon! if its say $15 per round, how often do you think you'll play it? i'm just curious as to how much play this course will get from the local players down there.

For $15/round, not often, but I'll try almost anything once. :P
Chicago "excellent news" I hope that this opens the door for many more courses.
Disc Golf is the best alternative for inner city kids that have been told Tiger Woods/Michael Jordan and the little white ball are key to their future.
Disc Golf Programs are inexpensive and can benefit children of all economic classes.
Inner City Disc Golf is Key...Playgrounds and school yards can provide alternatives to ........ You fill in the blanks.
Plant the course and maybe Mayor Daley will see the light !

Fly 18 courses are not for everyone. I surveyed 5 courses in the area for Reese before this one signed a contract with him. The reason that I chose to work with Reese is because the players in the Chicago area deserve an alternative to par 54 (or less) disc golf. Ball golf courses already have the land and the layout. Since this model has worked in the past there is a good chance it will work here as well.
...oh yea, and Reese has the baskets, the tee pads, the money, the vision, the business model, the experience, and a touch of whacky-crazy to make him think that he can pull it off...and he has done this in Indiana, California, Florida, etc.
The Fly 18 courses will never replace the public multi-use free park courses that we have in the Chicago area already. This is something different. Some people can't wait to try it...some people don't want to try it. Most people that try it will like it. For those that don't want to have anything to do with Fly 18, all I can say is that it won't hurt disc golf to have a Fly 18 course in town.

That's the one! The water on a couple of those holes is going to be fun! There are a few more trees out there than it looks like on the map, although there are some open holes as well.

What if it were around $10? I'm hoping that we can hit the $10 mark for a walking round. I think I'm breaking one of Reese's cardinal rules by talking about price points before they've been set...so just think of this as hypothetical. If the price was $10 per round, how often would you play the course? Once a week, once a month, 4 times per year?
One of the key selling points of this course to Chicago area players is that it is within 5 minutes of 90/94 which makes it quite close for most of us.
Jon
Would disc and ball golf be played at the same time? How would this work? Or, is this course getting totally converted to disc? I recall playing this as a ball golf course years ago. It was short and easy for ball golf but would still likely have plenty of length for disc.
Would the fee be the same for disc golf as ball golf? This is 21 on weedays and 25 on weekends without a cart. If so, I suspect the course might get me out there once for the novelty and not many other times. Edited...just saw the note on price. If $10 I suspect I would play a few times per year. Monthly? Maybe. Not sure. This course would be VERY close to home. That's a plus.

Ball golf and disc golf will be played at the same time. I plan on playing a round with my ball golfing Dad this spring as soon as we are able. It works quite well together. Until I played the Fly 18 course in Trafalger a couple of years ago I couldn't think how this would work either. Now I know, and all I can tell you is that it does work. It works so well that a lot of the ball golfers don't even notice that you are playing a different game. They figure the baskets most be some kind of new irrigation system or something.
Most golfers understand the pricing difference once they understand that we don't use the greens. I am still hopeful for a good walking price...but nothing has been settled yet.

Part of the best news of this course is that it is Cook County Forest Preserve land! although the course is managed by a golf course management company, someone on the Cook County Forest Preserve District Board had to sign off on putting disc golf there. This might possibly open other doors in the forest preserve system for other courses.
Brilliant
*does the happy dance*
id be willing to scout out joe louis golf course
i still think mokena might be closet to me that this course but
id be willing to pay 10 about once a month

There's dozens of examples all over the county, I'm sure, but I went by Schiller Woods (Cumberland/Irving Park) to work every day for about 2 mos last fall and kept thinking there could be a great course there....
Some things about the installation:
We are going to need help with the installation.
Reese will rent a power auger, but that will need two people to run.
We will be using the existing tees (probably) for the pro tees. The existing ball golf tees are huge concrete slabs with a carpet on it like a driving range. We will probably use part of the concrete slab for the pro tee. I'm not sure how we will mark the tee at this time, but I think Reese has some ideas.
We will be putting in amateur tees. They will be dug out (again with power equipment), limestone put down and then the Fly 18 pads put over that.
Reese will probably ship the baskets without chains to save half on the shipping. So, the baskets will probably need to be chained.
Reese has done this plenty of times and will coordinate the whole install. However, we will need a few extra hands to help out. I am not expecting this to be back breaking hand shoveling or anything like that.
Stay tuned for more information and please consider helping us with the install.
i'll put in some work. just name a date and i'm there...
let me know and ill try to lend a hand
Investing in a Professional (UNION) Operator may pay off in long run.
If a Power Operated Auger Tractor is used Then it would make it feasible for multiple pin placements, concrete, high end collars and Locks.
Prep. Three Pins Minimum...Having the option for diffent pin placements are more valuable than multiple tee area.
Easy in and out, Moving Baskets/Targets will keep the interest high.
Multiple pin placements will enhance all disc golfer experiances provide value added long term success.
Any disc golf course that is looking to charge a fee should have multiple pin/target placement.
I had the pleasure of playing at one of reese's courses in FL... It was fun, but it took forever as ball golfers take to long to play.. Just hit the damn thing...
I'm sure that I'll go to this course a few times a year, maybe if they have a ballgolf/discgolf fun event one round of each.. That would be sweet.
Disc Golfers always have the go ahead !
Never yield right of way to a ball golfer.
more on this later on different thread.
If this is fun course to play, then I could see myself wanting to play it 5-10 times in a year, if I can find people to play with that often. Definitely wouldn't go out there to play by myself. I did look at where it was and Jon's right, its not far off the expressway, so it'll be an easy drive. I'll definitely give it a chance and I am very curious to see how this will play out.
I think the amateur tees are required on a course of this length. This way a family can play together or a pro and a lower am. I've already told my ball golfing friends and family that I will play them straight up on the same tees but I think some people are going to look at that length and want a shorter tee. As far as more baskets, I think it'd be great to have more baskets or more pin placements. However, it's not my money.
Jon and I are driving down hole 4, I think, at Trafalgar and these two old ladies are coming up hole 1.
"Are either of you boys playing a Top Flight?"
"No, we're both playing Discraft."
Reese uses Dr. Fred's baskets, which are a little funky, but the Fly 18 concept is great fun. Brett and Dan could not get enough of Willow Brook when they came out for the Cali States.
YES YES YES 2 tee areas (2 min) and 3 Pins (3 min) = 6 different looks 6x18 , 108 different layouts, provides the odds of playing the same course more than once very slim. Using disc golf math I Calculate 1944 possible different layouts at one course. Disc golf math also tells me that Im 99% certain that this number is incorrect but you get the point.

Point noted. It's still not my money.
I live at Irving Park and Central, this course is 20 blocks (5-7 minutes) away. Being almost as avid a ball-golfer as I am a disc golfer, this is fantastic news. I have a yearly membership in the Forest Preserve Golf System (managed by Billy Casper Golf Inc.) and I've played this course before. It is not my favorite ball golf course in the FP system (that would be George Dunne National, down south in Oak Forest), but it should make a great disc golf course. I'm going to e-mail Reese to let him know of my proximity and availability to help with whatever needs to be done. I am elated.
Course will be opening on April 2nd. Installation begins on Monday, March 28th.
let me know
ill take my first day off of the new job
for the chance to help
Update...this information just in! Weekday rounds with a cart are going to be $15. Weekend rates with a cart are going to be $18. Walking rounds are still being negotiated. I'm still hoping for a walking round at the $10 mark.
hi Gang I am looking forward to comming to chicago. Thanks To Jon for this great course. Please keep an open mind this is different golf. Thanks Fly 18 pricing for walking will be next week.11,000 of fun
Edgebrook 2005 Rates
These are for 18 hole rounds.
Week Day:
Walking round - $12
Round with cart - $15
Week Day Twilight (after 2pm):
Walking round - $9
Round with cart - $12
Week End:
Walking round - $15
Round with cart - $18
Week End Twilight (after 2pm):
Walking round - $12
Round with cart - $15
So, during the week after 2pm is a great value at just 50 cents per hole! I was hoping for walking rates around $10 and we got them starting at $9---I think that's pretty good. The cart for $3 more is a good deal also--carts are fun! I don't think you're going to get onto an 11,000 foot Chicago area golf course for less than these prices.
I hope to see you out there on April 2nd!
this is a per round rate, yes?
Quotethis is a per round rate, yes?
Yes, 18 hole rounds. Reese might negotiate an all day rate as well. Although most people are not going to be wanting to play more than one round per day at more than 11,000 feet per round.

On my calendar Good Friday is March 25th or April 29th. What sect is April 15th Good Friday?
The course will be in the ground and open on Saturday, April 2nd. Some signage and maybe a couple of small things won't be done until the next couple of weeks, but we will have 18 baskets in the ground and all the tees will be finished.

My guess, it's the USTreasurarians. I would say the IRS, but, knowing many government employees as I do, a day where they actually have to start getting some work done is a bad day for them.
