Title: Getting more into Disc Golf
Post by: dark12 on April 17, 2005, 07:06:27 PM
Hello again everyone.  Ive litterally been playing atleast once a day for the past month.  Im getting so into it.  I usually work Monday-Wednsday from 5-11 so Im unavailable then.  Its really hard for me to find anyone good enough to learn from.  I was just wondering if anyone is interesting in playing with me at Lippold sometime.  I know you have groups here sometimes.  When are they usually?

Also try Fairfield Leagues on Thursday or Saturday. You'll learn a few things out there. Ask for Alex "Rifleman" Bingman. He will be glad to help mentor you. Just don't ask him how to cook a pizza  .

And there's also the Discontinuum league on Sunday at Bevier Park in Waukegan. We do upper and lower pools so you you'll get to play with players who are potentially better than a new person starting out.

Look for a Red Toyota truck with tinted windows and a guy on the course picking up garbage that has a pny tail.  That is Fred Vroman and he will shoot a round with you.  Tell him Brian sent you.

This summer I used to play buffalo grove pretty much every day after work...  Since i was by myself and the course usually had a lot of people on it, I usually joined up with a group of people that didnt mind playing with an extra person.  Most disc golfers are friendly people.  I learned a lot just from playing with random people that were better than me.  Pretty much anyone carrying a bag is serious enough to know something about the game that you dont if you are just starting out.  Eventually I would just go there and run into the same people all the time.  I cant wait to go back and kick some ass, my game has improved so much since last summer.  :D

yea I met someone there yesterday using a CE Valk.  When I saw that I knew he was gonna be serious.  We pretty much decided to become doubles partners for some tournies.
Its gonna be great.  We are going to practice everyday to get ready.  Although Ive heard alot of doubles are random.  Meh, itll still be fun.

Something thats starting to annoy me is the kids my age (17-18 ish) that are ruining the course and giving us DG'ers a bad name.  Im not a pot smoking hippy, nor do I ever intend to be.  Why does disc golf have to be parralelled with weed?  It irks me so much.

Welcome to the problems that people who care about the curse face.  My favorite is when the break trees and write/draw on tee signs, than turn around and complain about how crappy the courses are and how there are no new ones.

Im doin my part to stop them.
I pick up all their crap when they litter.
I spent about 10 minutes flipping out on someone who wrote on the sign.
My pet peve is people that tear bark off the trees.  You should see me yell at those assholes.

Welcome to the real world... pot is everywhere.  Rock climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding..  basically everything.  Don't be one of the ignorant fuks that say that disc golf is the only sport, because it is not..  It is everywhere.

I don't even think that is a problem. The problems are complaints from neighbors to the course, litter and vandalism.

Pot is always going to be tied to disc golf.  Its the perfect stoner sport, you walk around in the woods for an hour with a few of your buddies and enjoy some scenery.  At the college level, even the most serious competition has people drinking beers and smoking pot in the middle of rounds.  That isnt to say that every disc golfer is a stoner, or that every stoner enjoys disc golf.  but the two go pretty well together.  IMO it is far from being one of the main problems in the sport.  Stoners keep to themselves and generally dont cause trouble.  Stupid kids that disrespect property by stealing/breaking baskets and signs, people breaking off branches, and littering are the main problems that I see.  That, and most people dont even know what the sport is

"what, do you throw the disc into a big hole in the ground?"  and "dont those discs hurt your clubs?" are my favorite questions.

I agree with Shawn. It has nothing to do with the sport. People who enjoy certain activities (beer drinking and smoking of any kind, as examples) also enjoy them while enjoying their sport or recreational activity of choice. Smoking is more prevalent in some sports than it is in disc golf. Some sports beer is more common. But it has nothing to do with the sport. Take away disc golf and those same people will be doing something else before, during and/or after they smoke.

I find it more of the snotty, stuck-up, and spoiled kids that break the trees and litter.  I don't know how much good yelling at them will do.  I would just tell them to in a regular voice.

I have thought about calling the police/park district if I see someone littering.  I don't know how much good that would do for the course or the sport.

These problems are reasons why I wouldn't mind pay to play courses that are only a few bucks or twenty for a season pass.  It would help to keep the amount of people who don't really care about the courses, and damage it, off the course.

agreed.
I think its a great idea to charge a one time 20-30 dollar season pass fee.
