Title: Your info on your discs?
Post by: Younk on May 10, 2005, 10:31:21 AM
I lost a disc a couple weeks ago   so when I got home I put my name and phone # on all my remaining discs.

I'm wondering if anyone else does this, and if so, has a disc ever been returned after you've lost it?

I want to think that if someone found a lost disc of mine that had my name and phone # that they would return it to me but I don't have much faith in people anymore  :(

So tell me:
Do you put your info on your discs?

If you found a disc with someone's info would you give it back?

Has anyone ever lost a disc with their info on it and then got it back because the person who found it called?
(seeing someone with your disc and getting it back from them (with or without force) doesn't count  :D )

I call if there is an area code.  I can't tell you the number of discs I've found with a seven digit phone number on them.

I have had discs returned to me because I had contact information on the disc.

I put "JBrakel 10246" on my discs. I have gotten every disc that I've lost over the last 2 years back except for unreachable discs lost in water. The only exception is one of my 150 Flicks which is merely "missing" and hasn't been declared "lost" yet.

I've lost discs at Bevier that were returned by locals who know me. Other than that, I lost a white Wolf once that was found & the dude called me but when I called him back he postponed getting the disc back to me & I never heard from him again.
I also lost my Stratus once while playing Fairfield, and this happened to be one of the few discs with my home number on it. I usually put my cell number on them, but anyhow... Dude found my disc, called my house (wife answered) and said he was sorry I lost my disc but wanted me to know he wouldn't be returning it. The wife called me a minute later w/jackass' cell number, I promptly called him & pretended to be a friend trying to find him on the course. Two minutes later I had located the asshole & had my disc back.
I was so happy to have it back I forgot to bitch him out for being a dick.

I've had lost discs returned during tournaments - and last year at Worlds before the tournament actually started - but only a couple of times during casual rounds and that was probably only because I was still on the course and the finder knew me.

But I put my name and # on all of them anyway. You never know.

I tried to return a disc @ Worlds last year that I'd found a couple yrs earlier in Calif; no number but I left a msg on the board - guy didn't get in touch w/ me until I was already on my way back home

It was originally a funny story because his disc was the same make, color and even weight as the one I was searching for when I found his; I found mine too, about 10 ft away from his, but I don't throw either of them anymore.  :P

I write a ton of stuff on the back of my disc. I want to make the person that throws my disc look at my name or have to black out the entire back of the disc to use it.

I've had several returned. I also had 1 prank call. After I told him i'd buy it from him he was very interested. I told him it was worth $100.00 bucks. Ha! It was an SE Valkyrie & beat to hell. I wonder if he fell for it. Ha!

I basically put everything down

First Last name on top with pdga number

then city, state, and phone number with area code on bottom

people say it isn't necessary but whatever.

one of my ace discs was returned to me, the other discs i've lost were like rocs and i doubt anyone will find them :D

I always write my name, phone number and PDGA number on the back of my disc. I have had a few returned. I lost two discs on 15 at Hiestand last year and had those two and one other I lost earlier last year returned the next day.
I also call and try to return any disc I find with a phone number on it.
I thought it was funny when one person I called thought I should deliver the disc to their home. They couldn't take the time to come and get it or meet somewhere.

if it means that much to you I guess throw Telephone # on your disc. And something like Reward if Found...never post your real name (use code ) your looking for trouble.

most discs that I lose I dont want to find ! If there is info on it I will make a call or two if no answer I feel an Obligation to find a cozy home for the lost lonesome ownerless disc so...........................I just throw it back.

or you can sell them on E-Bay ... listing will describe something like " mint condition used Champion CE Valk   blah blah blah ... mint except for the seven inch Black Magic Marker spot on back.

Hey Chains if you lost it a Couple of Weeks ago... OPRAH would tell you to get over it and I would agree with her.

We should all save these posts that Dan makes so that we can embarass him by showing them to him once he grows up...if any of us are talking to him by then.  :D

Dan figured out about the special juice when Moises Alou played in town.  Every time Dan throws his disc it Whizzes by.  Yup, that sure explains a lot.

I put all info on the inside rim of the disc - still havent gotten the only disc I have lost at Parkside.  Red Orc - Zac Cobus' name on the underside - then mine in the rim.

Some asshat who is probably a one discer kept it.

I too am beginning to doubt the honesty of people.

I've only lost 1 disc, at Lombard to the pond... but I don't miss it too much.  It was just a DX Leopard.  Stupid wind.  On the flipside, the group I go and throw with found a Champion Orc that someone lost at Oak Brook.  It had a name and number, so one of the guys called and it was returned about a half hour later.

I put my name and cell number in the ones that I'd like to at least get returned if found.  It's always appreciated when someone returns something to the rightful owner.

Andrew Gleason put his name and number on his Firebird.  He's getting it back.  It does not happen every time, but how many unmarked discs do you think you'll get back?  I always make the effort to return a lost disc, unless it is totally unmarked and generic.

If you throw a DX Leopard in the wind anywhere near the pond at Lombard, you have only yourself to blame.  ::)

I actually threw a Dragon, which promptly whacked a tree, so out of frustration I just chucked the Leopard side arm (I'm a lefty), and the wind just turned the disc sideways and it bounced, not rolled (picture a sail on a boat) right into the pond.  It was on hole 3.  The crazy thing was that I didn't even throw the disc in the direction of the pond at all.  The wind *easily* made it blow over 100 feet to land in the pond.  It was the weirdest thing I had ever seen.

Ah well, at least I wasn't the one that bought it new.  It only cost me $3 heh.

To stay a little bit on topic though, the only time I would say to not write your info on the bottom of your discs is when you *know* that you plan on selling your discs soon.  That's especially true if you don't even really plan on using the disc or only a couple of times before deciding you don't like it.

Dragon and Leopard- both real good discs for a new arm.  However, both are real lousy discs for the wind. Both are kinda understable and the Dragon is too light unless purely downwind.  I suspect the Dragon would have found the pond if it didn't find the tree. :icon_cry:

My rule on writing...if its in my bag its got a name and number.  Unmarked discs have not made it to my bag.

Surprising the Dragon hasn't come too close to the water (hole #3) and I'm throwing LHBH too.  On Tuesday I threw it again because it had been a while since I had thrown it, and it was probably the best drive that anyone from my group has done on that hole.  Then I go a blow a 15' birdie putt.  That wasn't fun.  At least I still had it in 3!  I'm still learning though.

Where does everyone write their info on the Champion discs?  I don't like being able to see through the clearer portion of the disc and seeing my writing.  That's especially true when it's a nicely dyed disc.

I write my info on the rim. I am color blind so many of my discs are the same color (blue and yellow), so I also write the type of disc on the rim.

I write my info (Name, PDGA# and Phone#) on the rim of the disc. If its see through, I have my dad write it backwards so you can see it normally face up, too.

as it happens, I threw a Dragon in that pond once; landed too far to retrieve, but by the end of the round the wind had blown it clear to the other side and I was able to get it. They really do float!

I plaster my disc with my name, PDGA #, home phone, cell phone, weight & anything else I can think of. If someone finds my disc I hope they call. If not I hope to hell it's a pain in the arse to mark my name out. The entire bottom of the disc will be blacked out. If not, they'll have to look at my name & info everytime they throw it. Either way it's very unique to what most people do & they stand out.

I found a putter in long grass (did he drive with his putter?) and called the dude. He said he lived right off the 7th hole, but I'd already left. So next time I'm by there I'll call and drop it off.

My initial thought was SWEET, free disc! Then I saw the contact information and couldn't keep it in good conscience.

Well, maybe if you ever won at Peanutbutter Hula-Square and scored a nice "Tranitized" disc, people would fear your PHD enough to give it to you before you dole out the harshness!

Seriously, though, thanks for the encouragement. I don't like putting my info out there but I'm thinking about doing this. I don't want to write it on the inside in bold black marker like the one I found. But I think no one will notice it if it's too small or out of the way.

Edit 8 July:
I played Adler last night with the intent of calling the owner when I got to the 7th hole. Two "youts" let me play in their game instead of on their heels. I told them about the extra putter because the subject of lost/found discs came up. When I told them about th 7th hole they named the owner's older brother. They said they'd take the disc to him. Sweet! And I didn't need to stop in the middle of my game.

i got a call a couple days ago from some kid who said "i've got your pink champion orc b$%ch!, you can call me Fred!"  I haven't lost any Orcs in a while and have about 20 backups, so you can go ahead and keep the disc Fred.  You probably need it alot more than me.

Back in the day, I used to put my name and # on my discs. But that was long ago enough that if I lost a disc, there were only 3 other guys that played the course, and we all knew each other. You could go golfing , in the middle of the summer on a Saturday at noon, and be the only one on the course the entire round.
Nowadays, I do not even bother. My PDGA # are all I put on my discs. Most people don't call back these days, and if I care about the disc enough, I will look for it till I find it. It also helps having the Esquivel crew around as well. One of those guys are bound to find it eventually.

Putting contact info is basically just hoping that someone will be a good person & return it.
Most PDGA members will at least try to return them, non-PDGA members: not-so-much

Last Thursday I left a Z Wasp at Adler. I got a call about 2 hours later and got the disc back. He got a free disc & free lesson out of the deal. I've received several calls now and have gotten several returned.

This was back when I was selling my Am winnings to keep playing tournaments. I had a Champ Beast with a dancing bear dye. I threw it a few times but it was in great shape. I wrote my name on it. I sold it for $10 at Fairfield. I got a call and it was returned. I sold it again for $10.

Chances are by the time you've found it the disc has probably been played "lost" for a while and the guy who lost it has moved on to another disc. Probably if you found it the day the guy lost it he would probably want it back since he likely would not have replaced it (psychologically and physically) yet.

I Put name number PDGA number on them.  Put any specialties like aces on the front.  I have had one returned and had one guy call say I found your disk at this park at this hole you want it back.  when I said sure he is like too bad you are not getting it back and hung up.

Also I know a guy who goes swamping in Michigan and when he finds one with a number scribbles out the name and writes if you want a good BJ call and he leaves the number.
