Title: Roller Help

How do you get the disc to turnover and catch an edge to get it in the rolling stages?

you need either an understable disc for throwing a backhand roller & release the disc with the outer edge turned up from level, or by throwing a sidearm and again release the disc with the outer edge pitched up from level...

best way to learn is by going out into a field and practicing.

It kind of catches an edge but when it rolls it does a U-turn kinda thing...

you need to get the edge up more then, possibly add some distance to the flight before it lands. how hard is your snap, or how fast is the rotation on your drives?

sounds like you're letting it go too far then. By the time its travelled 200' the disc's rotation has slowed enough to the point where gravity pulls the rim down and you get the u-turn. Try letting it only go 50-100' before it lands and rolls.

i would describe the throw as more "over the top" than a normal throw.  I dont pull directly across my chest like normal, i bring it up more, with anhyser, and as much snap as I can possibly put on it.  I usually throw forehand rollers though, and all there is to that is throwing an understable disc as hard as you can with as much snap as you can.  It just flips and rolls.

Which way is it curling?  And, don't forget how to throw that curly roller when you learn to throw a longer straighter roller.

I use a really beat DX Eagle for my rollers.  I picked up a sidewinder and have tried it a few times but i'm not confident enough in it to use it in a round.  Actually, there is really only one hole I can think of that I use a roller on (5 from the blue tees at mokena), so my roller doesnt really get too much use nowadays.

It goes straight for little while then starts to go left...

dude i don't think you need to worry about rollers if your getting 200 yards in the air before u even hit the ground.  you've got a gun!

If you are throwing right hand, back hand then it is curling left either because you are using too overstable of a disc or you are planting the disc at too low of an angle. Try bringing your arm more over the top, even above your head, to get the right planting angle. Try planting at 90 degrees to the ground and see how that goes. You'll know when your plant angle is too great because the disc will start to curve to the right.

A third possiblity is that you are still throwing too far in the air before the disc plants. If it has used up too much spin before planting it will curve left and die.

How should the disc look in the air?

My discs look circular in the air...on the ground too!  ;)

I don't throw my roller shots in the air very far before they plant. So, coming out of my hand the disc is at about a 45 degree angle. When the disc lands it is at an angle like this: \  and then generally stands up to almost perpendicular and rolls straight if everything works out ok. The shorter the grass is and the harder the rolling surface is, the sharper the angle I can plant at and the more the disc will stand up.

bah, I managed to put my roller disc into someone's backyard and out of sight on the first hole of Keller Perk today at lunch.  Now I have to learn to throw something else before this weekend, or beat up another DX eagle.  The funny thing was I was showing a couple of my friends how to throw a forehand roller and I totally biffed it.  Threw it way too flat, it never stood up and went straight to the right.  Not a bad little course, by the way.

You don't want to use something too understable as it will burn out also(for backhand).  Likewise, stay away from anything that is not stiff for a roller, the flex will bounce too much and you will lose some of the energy.  For a forehand roller I use a stable disc, backhand a straight to slightly understable.

If thrown right, backhand roller should go slightly to the right and a forehand roller will go to the left... that is if you are right handed.

For a sky roller I use a valkrie or a xl...  there are not too many courses around where you need this shot though....  You need lots a room.

i had some success with my rolls today but towards the end of my play they started to curl to the right at the end of its path...
