Title: Disc Golf show for community access TV
Post by: Disc Golf Live on August 26, 2005, 06:37:30 AM
No disc golf on your local community / public access TV station?  Get your free copy to submit and hear folks say "I saw disc golf on TV last night!"

Disc Golf Live video magazine episode seven should soon reach our broadcast partners across the country.  Thanks to all who have helped facilitate broadcasts or submitted material for the show.

DGL is a PDGA-supported initiative bringing disc golf to community and public access TV stations anywhere a disc golfer is able to submit the show for broadcast.  Underwriting for this episode was also provided by Discraft and Discwing, Ltd.

Episode Seven starts out with a trip to New Mexico for a piece submitted by Mark Pritchard called "The Perfect Game."  Then the National Championships take center stage as we review the spectrum of these events, including a detailed look at the United States Disc Golf Championship coming up this October.  The folks at EDGE have a promotional DVD to share which includes details on their school-based curriculum, and we also take a look back at the men's Amateur Grandmaster competition from the '04 Des Moines Worlds.  Along the way there's footage of a shot far more rare than an ace (we caught one of these, too,)  plus local and national event calendars, and more.

More information about Disc Golf Live, including details on submitting video for the show and links to public access TV listings, can be found at www.discgolflive.com.  Copies are provided for free to local broadcast partners.  Individual subscriptions are also available.

(Thanks for the good word, Pat.  I hope you catch the show soon.  Here's the skinny on show #8)

If you are one of the folks lucky enough to have a community access TV station in your town, contact Disc Golf Live and hear folks say "I saw disc golf on TV last night!"

Disc Golf Live video magazine episode eight should soon reach our broadcast partners across the country.  DGL is a PDGA-supported initiative bringing disc golf to community and public access TV stations anywhere a disc golfer is able to submit the show for broadcast.  Underwriting for this episode was also provided by Innova, Discraft and Discwing.

Episode eight includes in-depth coverage of the Great Lakes Open, a PDGA NT event held this past June.  This includes a look at the Hudson Mills Monster course, and a review of the results of the amateur and professional competitions.  The showdown between Ken Climo, Dave Feldberg, Al Schack, and Scott Martin makes for some great footage.  We get a look at the senior set, including an interview with Peter Shive and the Legends finals from the '04 Des Moines Worlds.  We examine the nexus between disc and traditional golf as we take a look at some video from Florida and get the lowdown on the upcoming Players Cup.  Thanks to Denny Ritner for that footage, and to Joe Todd for his work on a Southern Nationals Am Championship recap.  There are two calendars: local events and a 2006 PDGA NT/Major listing. As always, there are a couple of minutes of footage at the tail end of the show so local information can be inserted as warranted or the show can be shortened if needed.

The 9th episode of Disc Golf Live is in the hands of broadcasters around the country. Thanks to everyone who has arranged for local broadcasts or otherwise helped out so far.

If you are interested in getting a copy of the show to submit to your local community access station, contact DGL.  Show DVDs are free to broadcast partners and the program meets broadcast guidelines for most community stations.  For anyone with a stake in seeing disc golf grow, the publicity offered via DGL broadcasts can be invaluable.

The feature event for episode nine is the British Open.  There is coverage of showcase finals for both the men's Masters and Open divisions from a fine course in Essex, England.  There is a course review from Hickory Hills in Traverse City, MI, as well as a look at Kensington Metropark in Milford, MI and the Toboggan course where we captured the Throw of the Show.  The Guardians of Recreation are back, this time with a nice general piece about disc golf, which they offer to others who might want to post it on the web.  Our crew at the USDGC caught up with Phil Arthur and he shared some tips on ambidextrous throwing.  We'll also take a look at the action among the amateur women's field from the 2004 Des Moines Worlds.   There are event calendars along the way, and as always, there are a couple of minutes of footage at the tail end of the program so local information can be inserted as warranted or the show can be shortened if needed.  Thanks to the PDGA, Innova, Discwing, and Discraft for their support of Disc Golf Live.

Disc Golf Live welcomes locally created segments or rough footage.  Please let your fellow golfers know about the opportunity to promote your event/course/players/club nationally and consider putting something together.  With video equipment and editing software easy to obtain, it's often just a matter of getting a few creative folks on the same page.

Greetings fellow disc golfers.

Episode 10 of Disc Golf Live Video Magazine went into the mail last week and should be in the hands of our broadcast partners and subscribers soon.  If you've got public access TV in your area and want to bring disc golf to your community, the process is simple.  Contact your station to see what you'll need to do on that end, then give me a shout and I'll provide DVDs of the shows at no cost.

The featured event for episode 10 is the Marshall Street DGC.  Thanks to Steve Dodge and crew, we have included the Ace Skins match and a few other bits to bring folks just a little taste of one of the most progressive events on the calendar.  The episode also features a course review of Flip City in Shelby, MI, as well as coverage of some nighttime play from the Mystic Mills event in Ann Arbor.  We've got a look at some of the footage from the recently released PDGA '05 Pro Worlds DVD, and a piece about the Louisiana State Championships put together from some video and pics submitted by Joe Todd.  There are also the usual calendar segments to let viewers know how far the world of disc golf extends.  Thanks to the PDGA, Innova, Discwing, and Discraft for their underwriting support for Disc Golf Live.

I looked into getting this onto Comcast's local access channels and found the requirements a bit much for me to expend at this time. They have you take a class before you can even submit anything. If you are into this sort of thing, the class looked cool...I just don't have the time.

Is it a class I could pass?  I've thought about getting it on Comcast around here.  They seem to have three channels of underutilized local broadcast stuff here.  Currently one of them is the school board channel, and they show some live high school sports.  The township board channel shows a lot of reruns of guys in suits listening to setback ordinance variance requests.

Yes. If you hunt around at comcast.com you might find the information. Try to beat 15 minutes because I think that's how long it took me to find a few months ago. Of course I didn't bookmark it!  :-[

Morning, boys.

Every station has different requirements, some more onerous than others.  An orientation class is typical, but many don't require any training, just some paperwork.

The easiest way to get the low-down is to watch your local access station to get contact info and proceed accordingly.  The program comes in a DVD format from which an appropriate broadcast tape can be made if necessary.

For those who are overwhelmed already with their duties as TDs, organizers, etc, this is an opportunity to recruit a new volunteer from the local fold who might be interested in the tech end of things and will do the legwork to get access to the local broadcast opportunities.

Morning Joe.  Do you know how many local access programs are carrying your show?  It has got to be slow uphill work trying to get disc golfers you don't know off their butts and jumping through the cable TV hoops to get this on TV.  I never had cable TV until recently when I found out that my cable internet provider would pay me money to take a few channels of cable TV!  Now if I could get some money for not raising pigs and not growing corn...

At last count, I have contacts for three dozen stations and a few more in the works.  Station playback standards vary, but on many
stations the shows are repeated a half-dozen or so times, and replayed upon request.

Its a bit like herding cats, yes.  Disc golfers are primarily a bunch of I-just-want-to-play types (oh, and they like to complain, too) but the ones who give more to the game than they take are often interested in the show and come through on the local end.  At least where there are stations.  There's still a huge number of station opportunities out there, waiting for a volunteer.  Charlotte, Chicago, the Twin Cities, and that's just some "Cs" off the top of my head.

I try to encourage folks who are overburdoned already with TDing etc to find a fresh volunteer looking for a unique way to help DG grow in a given community.  Its pretty easy to get hooked up at most stations, and opens up a valuable resource at disc golfer friendly prices.  (That would be free in most cases.)
