allright so im throwing around 300 feet back hand and i like to mix in a 240 tomahawk.(at least i call it a tomahawk, i grip it with my thumb on the inside of the disc and my remaining 4 fingers on the outside, then i throw it over hand like a baseball) i find it to be very deadly from 180' to 230' on approches. the disc allways spins smoothly 1 time around and then stops spining and drops strait down. so the other day im playing at my local course and i see someone bomb a tomahawk way farther than i have everdreamed of, the key is that it spon way more that once. i a 14 year old 6' tall quater back and i think i should be able to do the same thing. is my champian orc a good disc and what are some good grips or tips you have for me.
The disc most players throw for that shot is the Epic. Before the Epic came along, very few players had the power to get 270 degrees rotation. If you look carefully at your throw, assuming a more or less vertical launch, it rotates 180 degrees before knifing. 270 gets the disc to an ordinary flight plate up position and then it glides for a ways.
Your thumber/tomahawk isnt going to fly as far as a normal shot. It flies more like a projectile and doesnt really get the lift that a normal shot does. I use it for throwing over trees and thats about it. I throw an Eagle for it but anything overstable will work fine. Lots of people use firebirds. As long as you know what it will do it is fine.
Disc Golf review has a good article on this type of throw. Check it out.
