Post by: Dan Michler on October 10, 2005, 06:12:38 PM
Prediction for USDGC:

1. Jesper Lundmark
2. Barry Schultz
3. Brian Schweberger
4. Ken Climo
5. Steve Rico
6. Brett Comincioli (it could happen i suppose?  B) )

Brett said the clown's mouth hole is really f*&!ing tight.  I guess he went OB 5 times in his first practice round without playing the last 3 holes.  He said he didn't feel too bad about that, so I think there is alot of OB!!!!!!!

If you just try to make it through it is not really that hard...  If you are trying to get to the basket and pick up a duece, you will most likely take a 4.  To get to the basket you have to barely miss the top board or throw low with the nose up slightly....
OB is everywhere... miles and miles of rope and water....  and the damn cedar trees.

I love the course..  wish I was there too.

As for Brett being in the top 50....  doudtful, at least for his first year here.

i know he can finish in the top half (top 90) though if he has a good week.

It's nice that Illinois has someone to represent them at USDGC this year! OK, so let's get the line down on how Brett will do. I say top 25.

I've already had an awesome time! This place in fantastic. There is a nice sign off the interstate with the USDGC information on it. The hotel is sweet. There are 6 practice baskets out in the yard.

I did not shoot very well last night in the pooring rain.  I played a round this morning and shot a 74 in misty conditions. Some highligts were a 4 on #4 over the pond, 3 on #4,  2 on #6 bamboo hole & a 5 on the 888 hole. That rates from 972 to 1006 from last year's results. I was pretty happy with that considering I went OB 7 times. The rope is everywhere & very tight. Anyone that complains about rope at tournaments should come here & play. You have some type of OB or trouble on the left & right on every hole. The back 8 is very tough & has tore me up both days. Feldberg said he shot a 59 on Sunday.

I have no idea how I will shoot & really don't care at this point. I've played with some very nice guys already & have already had a great time playing this course. My goals coming in were to finish in the top 1/2. After seeing the course i've changed that goal & just want to play the course smart.

If we are taking numbers on Brett, you have to pick a specific spot and the rule is "closest to" wins.  If were guessing top so many, I'm guessing top 200 and I've won already.

Brett, I'm rooting for you.  Whenever I'm reminded I'll even pray for you.  Nonetheless, you are rated like Mark Ellis and a USDGC rookie.  Therefore, I'm picking 97th place.  Prove me way wrong!   :)

Just some facts: last year 39 of the top 40 places were won by pros rated over 1000.  Last year there were about 72 pros rated 1000 or better.  The 970ish rated pros finished 57th through 193rd.  970ish Mark Ellis finished 107th.  So picking 97th is giving Brett some credit, not dissing him.

Kelsey said after the Homie, "It's really hard to play control golf when everyone else on your card is just chucking them!"  Remember that if you get paired with a bunch of chuckers.

Over the past 2 days i've tried different approaches to all the holes. Some of the holes you have to get aggressive off the tee to set yourself up for good 2nd shot. Many of the holes you can play it safe off the tee. The problem i'm having are shots skipping from the fairway into OB. 4 of those 7 OB strokes were from shots that landed in bounds and skipped out of bounds. The really short cut wet grass, wind, & tight OB has given me fits keeping it in.

Watching the USDGC videos I noticed that Schultz, Climo and others tended to throw long hyzer shots to come into the fairway. This was to avoid those straight shots skipping OB.

Juan is a very smart man.  Throw it just like Climo and Schultz.  Those guys seem to have caught on to something out there which seems to be giving them an advantage.  Once you figure this out make sure you don't tell it to anybody else as you wouldn't want them to gain the same advantage that you, Climo, and Schultz will have.

Thats fine, as long as you can throw a Gazelle 400' on a controlled hyzer.  I say Brett should just throw thumbers for the whole tournament.  No skips there.

Well, if Brett shoots the best score in his group tomorrow he will have shot a pretty good frickin score!  That will mean he will have beaten Steve Rico.  Thats gonna be a fun round.  I'm sure Rico is saying to himself right now, "if I can just keep up with Comincioli, I'll be alright"

god i hope i get to play that tournament some day.  very jealous.

The overall page shows Brett even after 14 holes. The hole by hole page still shows him +1 after 9 holes. He must have picked up another bird after hole 9.

Ahhh...if you click on his name in the overall you get his hole by hole results thru hole 14.

I'm surprised Elaine King took a pass on the tournament.  I think she is the first USWDGC champ not to go.  But I don't know what she does for work.  Maybe her vacation time is used up or something.

Brett shot a 68, even par.  He is currently in a group tied for 27th per the PDGA website.  The provisional rating on this round is 1011.  It looks like he's throwing strikes.

Sergio- I have the Marshall St. contact info at my house. I'll send it to you when I get back.

What a couple of days it's been. Last night at the players meeting Jonathan Poole gave pretty harsh welcome to all of the players. He said he wouldn't allow players to act like clowns at this event especially with the PGA covering the finals with their camera crew. Yes, the PGA. The finals may appear on USA if they like the action. I actually enjoyed what he had to say. I also won a Satellite Radio for sitting in a lucky seat at the players meeting. The player pack had a ton of stuff in it including several shirts, usdgc shot glass, usdgc roadrunner disc, & tons of food.

Today was mentally exhausting. Starting with the introduction on tee 1 the adrenaline rush never stopped. Every shot demands thought and accuracy. I will be having nightmares of the red flags. I did not think I was capable of shooting par 68. I went OB 3 times & I left about 3 strokes out on the course today. All 20 footers. 2 of the OB's were good drives that skipped OB again. I enjoyed playing with Rico today. He was off & shot a 65. What a great player! I'll keep you guys posted.

Later
Brett

Today started out fantastic. Hit chains on #1 to get a good roar out of the gallery. Missed that birdie putt from 15ft. I've been extremely nervous to start these rounds then settle down at it gets going. 4 hours of golf helps. I played way better today then I did yesterday. I just sucked on 888. My first & 2nd shots went ob advancing me a whole 20ft down the fairway. Ended up going OB 2 more time. Got to play with McCray today. His turbo putts are amazing!! I've learned very quickly the difference between McCray, Rico, & I are the short  game. Those guys are money with their putters 300 & in & putting around the basket. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Brett carded another 74 today. He is tied for 115th out of 180 something. But it gets pretty tight in there...he's only a couple of strokes from 100th place. Looked like today's round he didn't have the hot holes in the beginning of the round but he also took 5 strokes off his score for hole #13 as compared to yesterday. He is doing better than a lot of players with ratings higher than his.

Good rounds Brett! I hope you are still having fun out there!
