Title: My turn for the DL
Post by: Jon Brakel on November 28, 2005, 05:23:01 PM
I inherited bad rotator cuffs to begin with. You will sometimes see me stretching with my arm over my head...that's usually my rotator cuff acting up. But now it's been bad for over a week and it has never hurt this much. If it is not better by the end of the week, I'll have to go see someone about it. Probably won't be good news though.

I'm glad it held up for the good part of the throwing year anyway.

I've got another word for you, "lefty."  You really have to push yourself to play when lefty is the only option, but maybe it would make family golf more fun, with Becky winning and Maddy coming in second!

At least you will avoid the bird flu.

I had therapy yesterday. It seems this is all just soft tissue damage and recovery shouldn't be really long. It still hurts but I already have my range of motion back and I can raise my right arm over my head without having to be hoisted up there by my left arm.

I am hesitant to play left handed because whenever I throw left it hurts my elbow. Also, the therapist worked on my left arm because it has all the same problems as the right just not as bad.

As soon as this is feeling a little bit better I'll be back in the weight room lifting weights. I think my over all muscle recovery is contingent on continuing my weight lifting.

...and on being patient and not rushing back to chuck long drives.  As hard as it will be, take it easy so you have full motion and full strength for next season.  Practice your putting to keep from going stir crazy.

Good luck with the recovery.

I played 9 holes of pain free disc golf today at BG. I played like  :pottytrain4: but it didn't hurt...even after. Hopefully I can play at least 850 golf by April.

 Jon,
I also inherited some shoulder problems. Last year I did a lot of lifting in an effort to be stronger and in better shape. Unfortunately I started to have shoulder pain last May. It turned out as my bigger muscles (back, chest, arms, shoulders) got stronger my smaller stabilizing muscles (rotator cuff muscles) got weaker. This lead to shoulder instability and resulting inflammation of the supraspinatus tendon which was getting pinched in my AC joint.

I'm not sure if this (shoulder instability, weak rotator cuff) is similar to what you have. After seeing a physical therapist I've maintained a daily regimen of rotator cuff exercises with very light weights that are done very slowly with two second holds at the top of each movement and high reps (20-30) per set. In addition to the weight/band exercises I've incorporated hand gyro therapy while watching TV and I've seen significant improvement. Wish you the best, the DL is no fun.
