Title: December Ratings
Post by: maa4208 on December 19, 2005, 03:48:13 PM
Since the new ratings update is tomorrow, I thought I'd make a new thread about it here. I hope my rating goes up because I had a par round at Lemon Lake (Blue Course) and a par round for 21 holes at Valpo.

Ok. Most ratings are up. I went from a 826 to a 850. I'm happy. :D
My dad's rating went up from a 866 to a 890. He's happy. :D
We're all happy. :D  :D

actually the intermediate players were rated there, but not the rec. did u play a different setup and maybe don't have enuf propagators to rate those rounds?

The Indiana TDs are really good for that, putting the rec men on a different layout from everyone else so they won't get ratings.  They did that at the Village Pillage also.

That is exactly what they did.  I likely will never see a rating. first round was 830ish. In the second round we had an int. player in our group and he played from different tees on some holes.

They did it at another tournament that the Apostalous played that most of the rest of us did not.  I saw it in junior's stats.

As a player I find that really annoying.  As a TD, I promise we will not do that to your division.  At the Village there was no reason for it.  The short tee was where they'd be throwing their drives anyway.

About the only place I can think of where something like this might happen at an IOS is the hole at Aurora where you drive over the river.  But, rather than give Junior Girls or rec women the short tee, we would make the short tee the drop zone, and give anyone the option to concede the o.b. and tee from the drop zone throwing 3.

Since I am not really playing for cash or plastic I might just play intermediate or advanced masters if I smell this again.  It really doesn't matter coming in last in those divisions (which I would not have done at Indiana) or close to last in Rec.  Also, the points are better.  Its a little goofy playing two different courses in the same round and in my case having players in the same group playing the different courses.

At Aurora if you want to avoid this you can just play the one hole really short but add some rope to make it tighter or play more longs on the other holes.  Or, you could lengthen the hole and make the first shot a lay up for junior girls, int women and puss arms like yours truely.

The tournament was the 6th Annual Lakewood Fall Classic in Valpo. I was going to play Rec there, but there wasn't any Rec players there, so I played Junior. I got some points and shot a par round for 21 holes for the first round. You don't want to know about my second round. That was on the shorter tees. I wouldn't of shot that well if there wasn't any shorter tees. If I played in Intermediate, I would of been tied for 4th. Anyway, It was VERY poorly run. <_<  I had to do a playoff for second in the dark by CTP without any glowsticks. The TD and helpers were all confused and it took about 45 minutes before they started any awards. So, I am really angry ( ) that my par round isn't in there. I don't think I'll play that tournament again.

don't worry whether people think its good or bad.  the goal should just be to keep improving.  i set my rating goals for each december's update because usually all my tournaments for a given year will be included at that time.  my goal is to improve at least 15 points by next december.  can't wait for 2006!!

I agree with Dan that setting goals is important.

People ask all the time how to get better at this game. Here is my .02.

1. Throw, Throw, & Throw more. This doesn't mean go out & play round after round to me. You can throw twice as many shots in an open field in 1/4 of the time. I love the dudes who play in 5'somes & 6'somes. It takes them 3 hours to throw 54+/- shots. I also love the dudes who sit on the bench before doubles then are pissed when they shoot poorly. Get out & throw!

2. Play with a variety of players & watch them. Watch disc golf videos in the winter. Observe what strenghts they have & try to mimic those.

3. Putt, putt, putt!!!

4. Throw discs that fit your game. You need to understand what flight charactieristic a disc has. Also understand what wind does to a disc.

Kelsey thinks its good.  She's 846.

My first tournament season ended in 1992.  If we had had ratings then, I'd probably have been rated right around there.

If I was young and healthy I'd be happy to be 846.  Lots of room on the upside from 846.

There were 15 intermediate rated playerss who played one or more of our tournaments in 2005 in Intermediate who have graduated to Advanced.  I think this should help beef up our Advanced turn out a little in 2006.

Wow, I made it to the advanced field again..  I  went from 912 to a 935 with this update..  Goal is to get up to 950 by next fall...  I just have to stop missing anything under 15 feet, and that should be a reality...

How to play tournaments for free or almost, the easy way:

A) Play in a division indicated by your rating.
B) Play tournaments with good amateur payouts.  If you are posting on this message board, I can give you some pointers on where to find those events.
C) Finish in the prizes.  If you followed (A) and (B) and you played without first wedging your head up your butt, this is easy.
D) Sell your prizes to Bruce for the same price he paid Discraft and Innova when he buys them.
E) Put the money somewhere that will be handy for the next tournament, but not easy to find when you get the munchies.

This is not a plan for getting rich quick.  If you want to get rich quick you have to sell your prizes for 75% of retail, like Dan and Brett do [or did, as the case may be].  This is more of plan for recycling your tournament entry fee.

get rich quick. haha.  yeah right.  its true i'm able to recoop entry fees, but once u count in travelling expenses and stuff, playing amateur tournaments is pretty much gonna cost u a little bit of money.  i don't advise anybody selling their discs they win unless u have won enuf that u are never having to buy discs for yourself.  otherwise, the key is to make sure you get discs that you will use at the tournaments, so u are atleast saving yourself the cost of buying discs.  this may seem obvious, but i see alot of people get some "new" disc with thier winnings that they don't need and won't hardly use.

in the end i guess i love disc golf and choose to spend alot of my disposable income (which is almost non-existant) on it.

Nice shooting Juan! Got some players on the rise in this area!

I was just kidding about the getting rich quick.  I'm all for amateurs selling their prizes and making a little entry fee and expense money.  Pros too.  I'll gladly pay you 85 cents on the dollar for all your pro winnings!  No one is getting rich off tournaments other than maybe the shareholders of Exxon, BP and Speedway.

i am well aware that u were kidding about getting rich, but once people start getting on u about being a prize hog in the amateur ranks, that can be a tough thing to deal with.  i'm just trying to avoid that as i don't plan on starting to donate money to professionals until 2007.

I wouldn't pay any mind to anybody giving anyone else a hard time about "getting rich" playing Am.  Your rating justifies your division.  You win and too bad for them.  Playing Am allows you to sell off a little plastic and make a few silly sports bets with your heart rather than your head.  :D (I'm having Joe dye the Orc I won).  Whenever you decide to play for real cash rather than plastic cash I suspect you will not be donating money to anybody.  As long as you read the lines at the bottom of your signature, "Relax and have fun" the rest of the world will have to watch out. :o

I totally appreciate what you guys (Dan and Brett) are saying. I guess I just don't understand the points thing and that's what I should have asked for help with.  I tried skimming through the PDGA description of the points but my short attention span on top of being at work didn't allow me to comprehend it.  Short bus explanation would be great  :D

I ended up at 882 for the year.  Not too terrible for a first year I guess.  My rounds at Waukegan were so bad.  I played a lot of courses for the first time in tournament settings this year.  Hopefully I'll do a little better next year, with some experience and some course knowledge.  My goal this year is to win an Int tournament and move up to Adv.  I have a much better time in Adv, and I play better too.

I think your intermediate rounds last year were juiced!   ;D

I did a click, click, back, back on some moron today and was mildly impressed with his rating.  My impression had always been that he was not really any better than me.  Then I looked at his history.  He has had basically the same rating for four years, then he jumped up 12 points when they handed out the juice:

18-Apr-2006 940 9
15-Dec-2005 941 10   <----- JUICE!
15-Sep-2005 929 8
15-Jul-2005 925 8
15-May-2005 928 10
15-Feb-2005 926 16
15-Dec-2004 929 13
15-Sep-2004 927 10
15-Jul-2004 927 10
15-Feb-2004 931 14
15-Dec-2003 928 12
15-May-2003 920 10
15-Mar-2003 925 7
31-Dec-2002 934 7
27-May-2002 925 7
31-Mar-2002 928 5
16-Dec-2001 934 4

I'm not really certain how the juice thing works for players like me who missed out.  Presumably, eventually, it will even out.  Until then, i guess I'll be dragging down everyone else's rating by shooting a little better than my current lefty influenced rating.
----------------------------------------------------------

So, I was feeling like my win the other day did not really count because the advanced field was packed with recs and intermediates.  Then I saw someone giving props to Dobberstein for winning at the Jersey Jam so I went and looked at those stats.  He had fewer advanced players to beat than I did, and they had a lower division to hide out in too.  I guess New Jersey is full of pretenders!

Anyway, I've never had so many people congratulate me on playing well before, and I wanted you all to know that I appreciated that.  If I can stay reasonably healthy, next year I'll probably play trophy-only Pro Master, at our tournaments.
