What is this tournament like? I've already played two of the four advanced courses and want to play in it because it will help me with my goal of getting invited to the 2007 am worlds in milwaukee. Another question, because I am a first year member to the PDGA, about how many points would be needed to get to worlds so I have an idea of what I need to play?
This is a must attend amateur event if you want to play Am Worlds in Milwaukee. If you do well you can get enough points to get invited from BG alone. There were 449 Ams there last year. I wish I would have been able to play.

just mapquested it to check the distance, it says i'd be on I-65 (the arm pit of america) for nearly 400 miles, uffff....
It's well worth the drive.
i wonder how many people play those courses for the first time during the tournament?
good question. I know most of us who went down last year, it was our first time seeing the courses. It wasn't too bad.
Quotegood question. I know most of us who went down last year, it was our first time seeing the courses. It wasn't too bad.
sweet! so what are the courses like? looks like its Hobson, Lovers, Ephram White, and Keriakas for advanced. where did u guys stay last year Mike?
also, how do these pools work? are there multiple pools just for Advanced? are the courses far apart?
The courses I played on a mini road trip from Carbondale last year was Lovers, White, and Griffin. Lovers was nice some nice holes up and down rolling hills with some nice sized trees. White, was WIDE OPEN with very few trees and wind was a major factor. Lovers and White(especially White) were long courses, which I was not a huge fan of. It got annoying having to throw 500-600ft. every other hole, really takes a toll on your arm after just one course. Griffin was a nice course but not very good at directing where you need to go, at one point they have you throw into an ampitheatre over a tall fence, and then don't give you a very good path to get out of the ampitheatre.
I played it in '05 and there were I believe 2 pools for advanced, 400+ amateurs total. We played Keriakes 1st in the rain and Hobson in the afternoon. Lovers (My Favorite) and then White (The longest and most open). By the time you hit White you are tired as hell. Great tounament. Players packs were sweet and the competition was intense.
Make sure to bring your A game, this is definately a prelude to World's. I only wish it was later in the season so we didn't have to deal with the crappy weather. I remember a couple of the guys I played with at Keriakes slipped on the mud and slid down hill. Pretty funny until it happened to me! :P
THIS IS TOO TEMPTING - Won't do well enough to get an invite to AM WORLDS but still would love to play the courses.
CAN EVERYONE SAY "ROAD TRIP!!!"

I think we stayed at some crappy Motel 6, Chase said it smelled like fried bologna. I have your other questions answered on our board.
The beds at the Motel 6 are hard as a rock. We stayed there last week when we played Keriakas and Hobson Grove.
The really cool thing about this tournament is that there are hundreds of players. I finished 57th or so in advanced and that was in the top third somewhere. If Crystal Lake had hills, that's what Keriakas and Hobson are like. White is like the open holes at Fairfield only each hole is 200 feet longer.
An intermediate rated player playing intermediate could get a bundle of points and a big boost towards an invitation to Milwaukee Worlds. I don't know who our intermediate rated am masters are, but if you want to get your Worlds invite in one tournament, play intermediate at BGAC.
ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, all I have to do now is convince the wife :)
Well,
You guys will all have the homeboy hookup because I'll be there as a marshal! I'm not exactly sure whom I'm going down there with just yet but I think we'll be heading out on Thursday afternoon.
I'll be marshaling for the 2 days and bustin' ya'll on rules violations - errr something like that;)
Also - the remarks about earning MAD points for the 2007 Am Worlds are pretty legit. I believe this was the largest Adv field in country last year so it's definetly a 'must attend' for points.
Ter
Hobson rules! Great technical course with one hard mando.
Ephraim White is looooong - bring your rollers and make sure you are not playing it for the day's second round.
Lovers, since its revamp in 2001, is FUN!
Keriakes is a great risk/reward course.
Have fun!

Discussion on PDGA Board
does any one know their policy or from what they saw last year about spectators since they will probably have about 500 players to deal with? I have some friends who want to come watch, and I was thinking that this might be a great opportunity to help turn them onto the sport.
Spectators are welcome but not accomodated in any way. They get a few players with caddies but not too many spectators because it is an Am-only event. If they follow you around, this year the PDGA has a new rule making you responsible for the behavior of your caddy, but not for the behavior of your fans.
are caddies subject to 804.05?
Yes. A caddy has to follow all the rules that a player does.
Holy smokes. Already 20 players from IL registered.
If anyone has extra room in their vehicle, I'm looking for someone to take some product down. I am thinking about vending at the flymart that night but I don't have much space in the ride Im taking (with other WI people). So what might be in it for you ... well, depending on how much room you can help with, I might be able to cover an entry fee or give float some merch YOUR way.
So if anyone has lots of extra room, let me know.
Thanks,
Ter
PS - This product would be legit product and nothing that would get you in trouble with the law. I'd like to bring some of my custom shirts down along with other odds and ends. I really don't anticipate bringing too many discs but I would like to bring lots of other stuff.
where do you go to see who's registered? I looked on the BGAMC website but no link (that I could see) and I went to titledisc.com and it only sent me to the register page (I've already registered). Is there another website that has this information?
Here you go:

thanks, that's awesome, ILLINOIS DOMINATION!!!!! BRING THE ILLINOISE!!!!(rip of off an album title)
That's a long @$$ drive, but I might consider it, since it is one of the best am events of the year and can basically qualify you for Worlds.
Dan,
Are you interested in carpooling? Not 100% sure if I'm going, but seriously considering it.
Thanks for the offer Doug. I would defnitely do it, but I already set up plans with some friends who live farther west. Our car is full or I'd get you in. Let me check what other people I know who are going and I'll see if I can work out something where we can all head down together.
If you can go I would definitely suggest doing it. Its gonna be over 500 ams and should be alot of fun.
The Bowling Green Am Champs is huge, and it is a one-stop opportunity to qualify for the following year's Am Worlds. If I had an Am 2 rating and wanted to go to Worlds, I'd definately go to Bowling Green and play Am 2. 900 disc golf will get you 850 points in intermediate and about 500 in advanced.
This year an Illinois amateur needed 1200 points to qualify for Tulsa Am Worlds. 900 golf in Intermediate at an Illinois Open will get you 125 points, maybe more, depending on attendance, and you can get 75 more by shooting the same in Advanced. So playing the Bowling Green Open gives you 4X the points for about the same price, not counting gas and lodging.
Besides being huge it is nothing special. In the upper pool you will play two good technical courses, but one of them is kind of tight with the course routing. The other two courses are about as interesting as Edgebrook, but without the carts or the manicured fairways. If you think about things that make a tournament special, they aren't there: Lunch? No. Field games? No. Pro Clinics? No. Because of the size of the field they have to do stacks o' plastic for payouts.
I'm probably going. I'm going to nail that down this weekend. The one-stop qualifying for Am Worlds is very attractive.
so the points are all there, what about the payouts? how deep? any information would be appreiciated.

I think they do large player packs and light payouts. But when there are 300 players in your division and you place well, a light payout seems like more. I'm pretty sure they will use the current flatter, deeper charts. Unfortunately, the PDGA does not publish am payouts so we can't just go look.
what got me wondering was that in the 50 richest tournaments of 2005 segment, pg 39, of the newest issue of Disc Golf World News they were not listed. for having 400 plus players i thought there would be some mention for sure.

They are basing richest on gross pro purse, I'm pretty sure. DGW would ot have access to amateur information.
Bowling Green is advertising awesome player packs. I would set my expectations on a good player pack, a well run tournament, a huge field, and a chance to meet players from all over the country. If you are an intermediate and you play to your ability in the intermediate division you will get a great start on a Milwaukee Worlds invitation.
Oh, this is cool: the Advanced divisions will be playing Bell South pro configurations at Keriakas and jogging track o.b.s at White. The tournament just got a little cooler.
Pretty sure I'll be playing this one. ADV for sure if I play, just because I've already played those courses a few times. No chance of placing in the cash, but it'll be a good time for sure.
Mike,
Let me know if you are going to go. I'm not 100%, myself, but if we both decide to go, maybe we can carpool......Dan's already dissed me..... ;D
Doug
I just registered. Now I just need to figure out a way to get out of work that friday. No vacation days yet. >:( I'm driving down to Champaign and meeting up with 2 guys, and we're going together. Check-in is from 6-9 on friday so we are gonna have to leave Champaign by noon, probably.
if u can't get off work, i wouldn't worry too much. if u are pre reg'd and call the TD to say you can't make the friday night check in I imagine you'll be okay. i haven't played BG, but i've played alot of others and i'm sure you wouldn't be the only one to miss the check in. just make sure you get your hole/course assignment in plenty of time!
man, this sounds really cool. no license, so it'll be hard to get there, but i'm gonna try. got lucky, no school that friday so i'd be able to make it. it says first 400 pre-register get a really good player pack. does anybody know how long it'll be for that four hundred to fill up? if i go, i'd like to get in there.
thanks
i think they around 100 right now - you probably have a couple weeks, but i wouldnt let it go much further - 49 days to go...

Last year there were 3 jr <19, 7 jr <16 and 5 jr <13 that played Bowling Green. A good place to check on stuff like this is to go to http://www.pdga.com/schedule/index.php (http://www.pdga.com/schedule/index.php) and look up the tournament from last year.

Saw some Milwaukee & Sheyboygan guys are heading down. Will any of the Kenosha crew be headiing down?
Kelsey and I are going. Someone [Kelly Watson from Arkansas I think] posted on pdga.com that he did not want to see me wearing funny shorts and a golf hat, so I'm off to the Salvation Army to see what I can find to wear. I'm thinking if it is not cold I'll wear my Tigger hat. If I make the Finals, I'll wear my King-of-the-Backyard crown for the Final 9! There is one guy playing Am Master who has been turning in 980, 990 and 1000 rated rounds. And I heard Framo and Ratman were coming, so getting in the Final 9 won't be easy.
I noticed a couple of guys registered in intermediate with ratings over 915.
Also, one guy registered as intermediate master.
What's with that?
I saw the same thing but didn't want to be the guy to call it out.
i'm sure the TD is on top of it. its not exactly a secret when its been posted there for over a month.
The "Intermediate Master" is traveling with a junior son. I thought maybe he was playing an unsanctioned shadow division just so he could play the courses and enjoy the event. The PDGA does not have an intermediate master division anymore. If we had an intermediate master division the ratings cap would be 875, and he is way over that.
There are two rules which could allow a 915+ player to play intermediate. If the Bowling Green Open is part of a local or regional series, a series player could continue to play intermediate even after his rating went up. Most big events that are also part of a series don't offer lower divisions so that rule does not come up very often. The other is, if the guys pre-registered as intermediates there is a not very well publicized policy regarding whether they can stay in intermediate if their rating goes up befoer the tournament. I have not looked to see if that might be working for them nor have i searched for the policy. Two of the top four intermediate women at USWDGC last year had advanced ratings on the day of the tournament, which is where i learned about that policy.

BLAHBLAHBLAH--- them there guys are just a bunch o' baggers. >:D
This tournament is at the start of the season. I think Mitch and Drathe had good eyes...they found a few baggers. Compare those guys to Jason who is still under 915 (probably not for long) and is playing advanced.
Season never ends in Bowling Green. We were playing in sweatshirts and caps in January there. Then it warmed up and we got rid of the hats. But it does not look like it is part of a series.
Either might have pre-reged before his rating came out. One has a new rating starting in Feb '06 and the other a new rating starting Dec '05. I'll go hunt down the policy...
The policy only gives you a two week extension on your old rating if you pre-registered before the new ratings came out. Someone might be able to work that at an IOS. But we do NOT have a series rule to allow bagging. You have to move to California for that kind of wussiness.
Of the three baggers, the two who signed up in intermediate had their first ever rating in February based on one tournament each from last year. Never had a lower rating. The other guy, the intermediate master bagger, got a 919 rating in December.
I feel like one of the villagers in a Monty Python movie, "She's a witch! Burn her." :D
That being said, I'm not playing, so what do I care? Burn!!! Burn!!!
The intermediate master is not bagging anymore than I'm bagging in the Broken Down Old Lawyers division. There's no such division as intermediate master. He fantasizing, not bagging. ;D But I'm all for burning the witches, the ones that float anyway. If they sink and drown there's not much point.
I just signed up for Bowling Green and am excited to go play there. Do we have to drive from course to course or are they all together and in walking distance?
must drive or get ride. plenty of players to ride with there. give me ur # before we go and if u need help down there with rides i can prolly help.
The TD is aware of the intermediate and intermediate master situation. Whatever he decides you have to understand one thing: at the end of this event he is sending the PDGA $5 for every player who played there and he will probably generate ten to twenty new memberships. When you are sending the PDGA two grand for a single tournament, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Its starting to look fairly likely that I'll finish DFL in Advanced. I never have time to play lately. I'll have fun anyways.
If you finish you won't be DFL. There are four or five DNFs at this tournament every year.

Up to 455 players. Right now the long range forecast looks like it is going to be in the sixties. I hope it is going to be sunny. :walk:
Good Luck to all Discontinuum members who are going to be playing in this event. Wish I could but I guess playing for fun in 85 degree dry desert heat isnt a bad alternative.
Thanks Neal, I might actually have a shot at it now. Try to check out Flagstaff courses.
Just found out I'll be in Mexico all week next week for work... I'm making sure to catch a late flight back thursday night, though. I think I'm gonna have to go straight from the airport to Bowling Green when I land during the night thursday. Gonna be an interesting trip. I'm sure my golf game is gonna be great :P
Make sure to say Hello to my Mom and Dad when you are in Mexico!
Has anyone seen a weather forecast that isn't calling for rain next weekend? It is a week away, but the forecast doesn't look good right now. :sunny:
just accept that its going to rain like a bastard, but atleast it will be warm :D
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-page2.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=0&traveler=1&zipcode=42101&fday=6&metric=0
this one looks alot better actually as far as precipitation is concerned. temps still in the 60s.
I checked with the TD. Because of the way the courses are spread all over the county, its only going to rain at the courses YOU are playing. So it won't be that bad.
weather forecasts have improved alot for this weekend. looking like 65-70 both days on the weekend, a little wind, but pretty typical for what we are used to around here.
Kelsey and I have to withdraw. The only advanced women we know that are going cannot help us with transportation. We are very disappointed. That disappointment was reflected in an earlier version of this post, but was not expressed in a useful manner.
Good luck to all those representing Discontinuum!
I am going down and playing in the intermediate division. if there is anyone here playing in the same division or even at the same courses as me could i please get transportation between courses on saturday and sunday? That would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
DISContinuum representing in the Firday Dub!
Michler & Gabe took 2nd in one session & Nasty & Rocky won another!
Way to go fellas!
559 players. WOW~~
this is a great tournament and i would recommend that anybody should give it a try. keriakes is a very fun course, the other 3 aren't really very good and would fit in fine in the suburban area here.
congrats to lombard area player Jeremy Bogan for finishing 9th. He played very solid with no bad rounds. congrats to Dan Michler for finishing 161 out of 280. thats just a total disaster as Trump would say. to be honest, i never really recovered from a bad shot on the 2nd hole of the tournament :o still alot of golf left this year though and things can only go up from here.
Yea 271st place
I beat 12 people ;D
how'd the q-city folks finish?
According to the website (www.bgdg.org) it says you need to be a current PDGA member to play...the winner, Will Ennis, isn't current (unless he renewed at the tourny).
Just wondering.
What was the weather like? Did you guys end up driving home through the storms/tornadoes/hail???

Saturday was beautiful. Couldnt ask for better weather. Sunday it rained bad enough during the first round that we had a break for about 35 minutes before starting again, and then there were a few patches of rain in the afternoon round. By the time the final 9 started, it looked like the sky was about to come down.
I left a little early, probably about 45 minutes before most people... I managed to come into downtown Indianapolis exactly when the tornado touched down. I was probably in about the worst place possible, on the highest highway overpass. The rain was strong enough that I couldnt see past the end of my hood, and the wind blew over enough phone poles and power lines that the lights all went out on the overpass. The wind was strong enough at one point that it completely broke my wheels loose from the pavement and blew my car from one side of the road to the other. I managed to inch off the highway and park my car up against the side of a cinder block building to wait it out. Ive never been so scared in my life. Apparently there was a confirmed tornado about 3 miles from me, and they think there was another about 1 mile from me. I drove right in between the two of them. Down trees everywhere in the city, you couldnt even drive down some streets.
Holy crap! Glad you made it back here OK.
hell yea! thats the kind of stuff that'll get your blood pumping.

Seriously... When my car slid sideways and then all the lights went out, I thought my car was about to blow off the overpass. I cant believe I managed to make it off of there without having a heart attack or something. I was at exit 105 or something like that, and they said on the radio that cars were being blown into the ditch by the wind at exit 99. And that's at ground level, not a 50 foot high overpass.
i cant imagine what that had to be like - winds howling, unable to see in any direction because of rain outside or fog inside - and a gloomy weather report telling you that only miles away things were getting devistated! that had to be a great feeling pulling away from there - i'd probably beat my steering wheel uneven with excitment!
Definitely good to hear you made it home ok. It had to be one of those things that you seem to only see in movies...then, you suddenly realize this isn't a movie.
106 out of 150 Intermediates, I'll take it for my first tournament.
Andy,
What a way to enter the disc golf ranks playing the largest Am Event of the year. Hopefully you had some fun and learned what you need to do to get better. That's a good outing for the 1st tournament. Congrats!
Brett
Glad to hear everyone is OK and had fun. Looking forward to joining you all next year (I, unlike NinjaBoy, did not have the nads to make that my first tournament, way to go, man!!! ;) )
How 'bout that Gary Camp! That Illinoisian showed the youngsters how to get it done! I played a tournament round with him last year at Lippold (IOS3). He's not a distance driver (averaged about 325ft on the longer holes), but uses great course management and accuracy in his short game. He is probably the only guy who could give Pete Shive a run for his money at the worlds. Don't think Gary's going to go pro to play once a year against Pete, though. So, Pete can rest a little easier. Nice job Gary. Looking forward to playing with you at Lippold later this year. Maybe by that time we will both be forced into advanced.

I played that round too (well, parts of it anyhow.) Gary's a very good player, but Peter Shive is a *senior* GM (60+) and I don't think Gary's that old. ;)
Bowling Green Notes:
The players meeting Saturday Morning was kind of nice. Two guys sang the National Anthem and most everyone else kind of sang along very quietly. Over 500 players at one place was very nice. It was good to see some faces from Wisconsin and from the Springfield area. I was in the D grouping which was advanced masters along with some advanced players. There was a party on Saturday night with a cover band that was pretty good. There was beer and pop along with free pizza and chicken wings. The players packs were nice. A tee shirt, a mini, two wraiths, and two other discs, along with some Bowling Green information.
We played four different courses, Whites may have been the toughest course with all the OBs. There were paths all over the place that were marked OB. Very few trees and a couple of holes over 500'. Lover's was nothing special, some trees. Hobson was kind of nice with the trees and placement of the baskets, plus it was in a historic location. This was the course that I was on when the thunder and lightening hit. It didn't last long, just enough to jack my round. I need to put a basket in my shower for practice.
They provided nice directions to get to and from the courses. I would have liked to play the courses that the intermediates played but didn't get the opportunity. I wouldn't know how the payouts were because I didn't cash.
Overall very well run and well organized. They did a great job of handing out the players packs and they had a lot of vendor space. I am hoping that Terry Miller did well down there. I certainly plan on making the trip again.
