Title: JUNIOR LEAGUES
Post by: CEValkyrie on June 03, 2002, 08:17:27 PM
Junior Legues start Saturday June 15th. I'm not sure what time they are going to be. Bill, Angela, & I are going to be organizing the league. Bill[-We need to sit down & set up an agenda for this league.  I have some bad news. I cannot attend the first week. I'm going to be in Michigan at a NASCAR race which I have attended for the past 8 years. It is in June every year. I'm going to need someone to cover for me. Anyone interested in helping, please come out. Bill, if you are @ best shot this Thursday, we can set up a rough outline that night.

I think hitting the schools would be a great idea if a lot of them in our area aren't already done for the summer (at least, Warren Township ones are....)

And yeah, if need be I can do scores and whatnot. It won't be like how I was talking last weekend, Jim. I haven't even started thinking about what I would need behind the scenes to do a web-based score entry & points system.

And what does chain upgrades to the baskets have to do with Junior Leagues? This is a threaded discussion board for a reason.... If anything it should be part of the Bevier thread (as Jim already has done).

Yay for Junior Leagues for surpassing Best Shot for recent attendance!

Great, wonderful. Discuss the chain upgrades in the bevier topic under courses please, which is where I have copied your post. More people are likely to read it there than under the Junior Leagues heading.

Glad you guys are on top of this!  Can I do some flyers to pass out this weekend, assuming the general info on the website about Jr Leagues is correct?  I want to make sure the WPD, the YMCA and the News-Sun are aware of this.  Please talk it up and get all your students'/church members' kids to at least come out and see what it is all about.

We will need to do waivers for each kid who plays (only one each for the length of the league), which I will provide.  Also, do you think it would be a good idea to circulate info at high schools and jr high schools as positive activities for summer break?

I am also trying to get a hold of the Fraternal Order of Police for possible sponsorship, involvement, etc.  Is that OK with you guys?  Would you rather do it? I will make special scorecards for the league also.  Bill, if you have time (or Mirth if you do not) can you put Jr scores and stats on your site and I'll get them off there later?

How many holes will be played each week?  18 for all or 9 for younger group and 18 for older group?  Just 9 for both groups?  Let me know when you work it out.  What else do you need from me?

BTW, I'm really looking forward to you guys (and Angela of course) doing this.  You are all talented and capable and I think kids will love ya!

Would you break it into 2 age groups or one combined?

The first week of Junior Leagues had gorgeous weather for some BIG fun!  Matt Bacaling, Bill Christensen, and Catie Mathews (and Bill Conover, Angela Mathews and Scooter) played 9 holes Saturday morning and tore up the course.  These 3 Juniors played very well, trying to out-do each other on every shot. Although they are young, they brought their big arms!

Bill and Angela provided prizes and candy for all who played.  Together with Brett, they will make this an excellent weekly event for the kids!

I'll prob be there tamale and on the 20th.  Danny and Billy will be there every week.  Bicente will attend more when he gets back from Iowa.  Also made contact with the Waukegan Fraternal Order of Police today, and they seem interested;  now we just smile a lot and wade through red tape.  Hopefully, they will come out to see our budding Juniors leagues in action soon!

I just wanted to say that the Juniors Leagues are coming along great!  Sure, the turnout could be better, but what Brett, Bill, and Angela are doing simply could not be better. For those who have not seen them in action, they keep things casual and fun; the groups are small enough that each kid gets individual attention and tips from the older folks. Plus, the prizes and perks (lots of candy and more discs) really make it fun. Today, Adrian showed up with fresh watermelon and drinks for everyone as well.

THANKS to all who have helped with the Junior Leagues! Let's make this an ongoing project because our kids are worth it!

I thought we were going to let WPD do chain upgrades later in the year / all at once?

Catie & Danny were the only 2 that showed up yestarday. We did have a great time though. There were perfect playing conditions. Absolutely no wind & 90 degrees. We started off with some putting then headed out for 18 from the cement pads. Danny shot a 36 & a 42 for a total of 78. He dueced #4 on the second round with a 30 foot putt!!!! Catie shot a 45 & a 50 for a total of 95. She took a four on #3. Very impressive. What a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go this week!

I'll be @ Bevier Thursday night as usual. If 10 Kids show up some help would be nice. I'm also seeing if Jim is available after the league to start some of the chain upgrades. Anyone want to help?

My intentions were to post to Bill that I could get the prizes from him for Junior Leagues after Best Shot Thursday night. I was seeing if Jim wanted to meet me Saturday after Junior Leagues to start chain upgrades. I guess I should explain a little more. This discussion basically revolves around Junior Leagues. Jim, I thought we were doing the chain upgrades ourselves & seeing then if the park district would repair baskets in the winter. Also, I think the upgrades would be nice to have before the tournament.

Only 1 Jr. Showed up. Paul, Cousin Bill, & I played 9 holes in overcast with slight drizzle. Cousin bill is improving big time!! He hit a 40+foot putt on #5 for a 4. We had a blast. I almost got my first ace today on #8. Skipped one off the wood chips & missed just left of the pin. Oh well!!

Bill,

There is a group of girls from Michigan that are thinking about traveling to Bevier on a Saturday to play. I know that Junior Legues have officially ended but do you think if we arrange a specific Saturday that we could get the whole junior gang out for an 18 hole round? Do you still have those prizes? I have some sport discs that we could give to everyone. Let me know if you are interested.

That's okay Brett, Angela and I won't be here on the 22nd. Maybe we can just do tag team or something. I agree that we need to discuss the details of what and when stuff will go on. I'll be at Best Shot Thusrday, but I'll be late as usual. We can finalize plans then.

2 age groups, depending on what ages show up - probably 11 and older or something like that.

Hey Brett,

I can't make it to Best Shot tonight, sorry. I wanted to finalize some details on the Junior leagues. Angela and I will be there for the 15th, but not the 22nd of June. I would suggest that the league be about an hour long, maybe 1 1/2. If we started at 10am, then everyone wouldn't have to get up too early, and we would be done before lunch. If this sounds okay, then we can post it and start informing everyone.

Both Angela and I will be there the 13th and the 20th, but if anyone else feels like coming out to play or give instructions, we start at 10am every Saturday. And hey, free candy for everyone who shows!!

Gosh, gee whiz thanks Jim! You're such a sweetie. Junior leagues are fun, even with the low turnout. Now that we've seen most of the kids play, I think we should have some putting instruction at the beginning of the next set of rounds. All of the kids drive well, they just blow their putts and double their scores. I'll bring some temp baskets out next Saturday, and anyone interested in helping kids putt please come on out.

I will get a web site up this week with the junior scores, even if it kills me (lightning fried the phone lines in the house).

Last Saturday we had a record 10 kids come out to play. I haven't posted scores yet, but plan on doing that tonight.

Angela and I won't be there this next Saturday, so if anyone can help out Brett at 10am that would be great. We have been playing just 9 holes, but I bet some kids would like to play 18 if possible.

We have also been giving out prizes for the top two finishers in each division. I have some prizes (from the dollar store), but i'M not sure how to get them to anyone before Saturday. Let me know if you have any ideas.

This issue came up at Pizza Hut a couple of weeks ago.  I don't have the name or e-mail of the guy stepping up to help with Bevier Junior League so I'm counting on you avid readers to pass this along.

The guy to contact is John Mann.  His e-mail address is manoland@amtelecom.net.
