I thought this was a good course. It had a ton of different shots. 24 holes, dirt tees. Some of the holes had long tees. I'll start with the negatives. We did not play the long tees. We played a round then kept score for the second round. I shot -11. They said this was supposed to be a challenging course. Parkside is much tougher from the shorts than this course. Maybe if I had time to play the longs I might have a different opinion. There were only 3 holes over 300ft. It was difficult to find the way around the course. It was also very very muddy. Other than that, this was a worthwhile course to play. You have to have a complete game. Many tight fairways, lefty holes, protected pins, etc... On a positive note. The elevation is great. If you like to hike, this is the place to play. You are up & down all day. Hole #2 is a sweet ravine shot. #16 is also but it is not open & a pain in the ass. We looked for discs both times but I found 5 on that hole. Not bad for a days work. Another reason I like this course is because of hole #7. 275ft, straight shot, pin surrounded by trees except front. I threw a laser right @ the basket. It bounced directly off the #plate. Thought I had my 2nd Ace & almost creamed myself. I would go back & play again if I was headed that way.
Again I agree with Brett. Here's my quick rundown.
Hole #2. I could throw this all day and I love. I want to play an entire course with shots like this.
Hole#16. I could never play this hole again and be happy, On sencond thought it would make me happy to never throw it again. I hated it. Maybe when things aren't so muddy and they get rid of a few brances here and there I'll give it another shot.
So other than 16 mud! Mud everywhere, but thats not really their fault is it :-) Hiking though is a pain in the ass, and my legs felt like they were going to go out. I liked all the elveation changes, but I would prefer when going down a steep slope to have some stairs maybe?? I twisted my ankle about 8 times throughout the 2 rounds we played.
All in all though I really liked lots of different shots and good fun holes. Locals are creepy, but I would play this course again, even making the drive out specifically to do so.

I HATE it when the stream gets annoyed!
well i love this park its really nice and well worth the 2 hours round trip. I love how it is planned out its great. hole 2 is the best hole. If u hit up west park u should go to another course that is close by there r a few
little muddy on sunday
5 cars 5 guys at course at 830 am
got to play 36 holes before bowling
all or none
dueces or bogies
played here yesterday
ought to be a bottle ban at this course
lots of bottle tops in ground
didnt play that well but it was nice to get out and play
Quotelots of bottle tops in ground
Maddisen loves walking that course because of the bottle tops but I agree with you.[/font] :)
I played West Park yesterday. Very crowded. Top assembly and chains missing on hole 16(?). The on/off slight drizzle made the course really muddy and slick. Most teepads were not usable. Lots of rude disc golfers.
I really like West Park, but am seeing the need for refurbishment. The silt is eroding worse every year; the stone steps in the ravines are falling; and some basket collars are showing because the soil seems 3" lower than just a couple of years ago. I hope this course doesn't fall into further disrepair. I wonder if the Joliet Park District has plans/funds to do some work.
QuoteLots of rude disc golfers.
Want me to take care of 'em?

Naw, I can handle them. That's why I'm called the bionic-bowflex buff-god.
West Park is such a cool course, and the oldest in IL, that I just wanted to see if anyone knew of any maintenance/rehab projects planned.....
u have to play this course at about 8 am
to really enjoy
i wont play here any time after that
perfect work hookey course
does anybody know the par at west park? I cant seem to find it anywhere online.
All holes are par 3. 24 holes = Par 72. Hope this helps.

seems to me the only solution would be to just pull the course for a good while; maybe with the new course in Mokena that might be more feasible, but I'm in no position to know.
It's a drag, because vandalism is also an issue there; I remember playing the course about a year ago this time, and some idiots had completely flipped a cement bridge near #4, which couldn't have happened during a normal storm/flood, so go figure...
I wonder how West Park & the other courses in the Joliet area are doing. Big winds & tornadoes might have done some damage.

Gary has told me in the past that the bridge damage is from floods. They wind up having to fix bridges every year there because of that. I guess that little stream becomes a torrent on occasion.

Yeah i live right next to mokena, in tinley park. There was a funnel sited in mokena, might be some trees down but i havnt made my way over there yet. My home, Utica, got pretty much wiped out but my family is okay though.

Glad to hear your family is ok. Let us know how the courses are doing. Hope all those Oaks in Mokena are still standing.
Utica looked pretty blasted on the news. Sorry to hear about it. Strong winds today too; hopefully no repeats.
Thanks for all the concerns guys. Youll be glad to know that the Mokena course still in great condition. I played 54 holes on Saterday afternoon and the course was looking good. They were in the process of putting in nice looking benches behind almost every tee pad. It looks like Mokena's course is going to be one of the best in Illinois.
just aced today i got it on 18 at west park so sweet blind shot i think its 330.. man it was so loud when i hit..I ran up and saw chill there
played here yesterday
ought to be a bottle ban at this course
lots of bottle tops in ground
again same comments
had 8 2's
3 4's
didnt drive that well
missed several putts
love the shorts here
next time reds
I love the shorts but like the longs on occasion :) I missed playing there this year.
I am travelling to St. Louis this weekend and was thinking of playing either at West Park in Joliet or Lincoln Park in Springfield on the way down. Has anybody played both? Any opinons?
I hope to play the course in Collinsville on the way back.
west park yes
lincoln yes
douglas shorter than lincoln
lots of 2's if pins are in short
Thanks Air Spuds. Lincoln park was very cool. They now have concrete tees and appear to have long and short ones. I played the short as I am not a heavy hitter. I did play out of my mind and scored 59 which is a heck of a lot better than the 72 72 I shot at the Blast.
Nothing is marked and I walked to every basket before shooting. Once they get it marked it will be a very fun course with some elevation changes and a long 9 and 18. Lots of mature trees but no real tight holes such as the two at Bevier.
from my inlaws place around shelbyville
ive played
lake carlye
effingham
springfield lincoln
springfield douglas
urbana lohman
every course is still like 45 minutes away
but i like the springfield courses the best
I used to go to Mattoon for work but never played Lake Carlyle or Effingham. I have played the Urbana course. I recall a lot of students were involved in sporting activities and I had to keep an eye out for them.; I think some clubs or teams practiced in the park. If you ever get farther south the St. Louis area has some real nice courses. Sioux Passage is a favorite. However, I have not been there in years. I did playWooodland Park in Collinsville yesterdayand it was a very nice and well marked course. We went to eh Cardinals game on Fridaynight but I made sure to wear a Sox jersey. From your Avatar, I suppose you would approve.
heheheheheh
yes i do
i did get to play http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=529 (http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=529)
when i was in fenton , mo for vaca last year
played the reds yesterday
did not score well
got some 2's
saved some 3's
a few 4's (this is why i am an am)
but it was a great day to be out
again i would be all for a bottle ban on this course
Brett,
If you're ever heading out this way I would be more than happy to play a round a West from the Reds with you. Unfortunately not all of the holes have Red tees, but the a few of the ones that do make you throw differently. My favorite has to be the Red for #4, which is back up the hill. Basically if you were playing #2, the Red for #4 is to your right about 30 feet. Makes for another great shot off of the hill.
#16 has to be one of the best holes there. No Reds for this one, but from what I see most people hated this hole. I usually throw a Tomahawk or Thumber there & get it down to the protector trees for a putt.
Littering has always been a problem here, but for how packed this course gets it COULD be worse, but not by much. More garbage cans would help, but vandalism here is rampant so i don't know how long they'd last.
The creek DOES become a torrent when it rains. I've played there after it rained heavily and the creek was all the way up to the top of the bank on #11. So for it to push the wooden part of the bridge is not out of the question.
I will definitely let you know if we are planning on playing there. Over the past few years the only time i've played West Park is for the tournament. It's an ok short course but nothing spectacular. After a while I get tired of throwing my Roc & Putter the entire round. Since my first post i've played the red tees several times. I've heard many times Gary was thinking about redesigning the course to become a more challenging 18 hole course but i'm not sure if it's true or not. Usually if i'm heading down that way i'll play Mokena. Is #16 the downhill shot thru trees with basket right by road? It's a fun tight hole. I usually stick to the putter on that one.
Brett,
#16 is the downhill through trees with the pin by the road. Putter usually works well there too, but having played the course a TON, I usually like to throw the Thumber or Tomahawk there for show.
Mokena is GREAT, but obligations kept me from playing the tournament there last year. Should be all OK this year, no one has announced a marriage or graduation yet.
How good is this course compared to Mokena? The guy we met up with today was raving about Mokena, but had good things to say about this course as well. If it's not as good, is it because of the tees? placement of the baskets? length of each hole? mud? Just curious before I go and make a drive that far south.
Mokena is a better distance course & park, no doubt. West has Mokena beat as far as elevation, but the tees there are dirt and not concrete. Due to this, if any decent rain has fallen then the tees will be pretty muddy.
Red tees at West will provide more challenge, but if you're not familiar with them some aren't that easy to find.
Mokena will actually make you play position on some of it's longer holes, so I would suggest playing Mokena as a 1st stop if driving that far, and possibly West as a 2nd choice. Channy is also a good choice if you're making the trip, but the wind can be FIERCE there, so be warned.
Played West for the first time this summer 2 weeks ago (1st time since april)
WTF happened??!!!!??? :o The course got updated :D and rerouted >:(
New baskets = Great
bridges/stairs rehabed= great
making #2 a hyzer shot =WTF!!!!!!
just wondering if anyone knew why changes were made? the best reason I've heard from locals is the erosion around baskets...
I'm not sure, but I think they changed it up to make West a bit more challenging.
As far as #2, if they hadn't made it a Hyzer then the people on tee #3 would be in jeopardy. Besides, it makes you play the Hyzer but keeps the creek in mind both going over & where you land.
West is still a mostly pitch-and-putt, but the changes have made it a bit more challenging. Only other thing that would be nice is if the 3 extra holes usually used for the tournaments could be up all the time. But I know that dog walkers want part of the park to walk their dogs, but no one picks up after the dogs do their business. ???
Overall, I give the West re-design a
I played West again over the weekend, and it felt a little better..... you're right, 2 is a lot tougher now... that creek forces you to really think about landing.... I managed to bounce a few into it :-\
speaking of tough hyzers, the new 20 takes the cake... can't even get it close from the tee
#3 would've been really cool if they had put the basket on the other side of the creek half way up the hill. (course that requires yet another bridge)
Like the new 23 as well...
all in all, it's not bad.... I guess I just long for the nostalgia of the Old Layout
I hear ya. I can't tell you how many times I've thrown there lately & not done as good as I should, saying to myself "woulda been a birdie on the old pin."
I understand this is slightly off topic compared to the last post dates, but... I'm ranting
West Park is basically my home park, as i spend a majority of my time between Joliet and the Oaks of Mokena... what a fun course, i know almost everybody has been there, but if you haven't you should check it out.. ;D
This is also a Lost & Found.... mainly a lost... a 171 glow teebird that i watched go into a tree at hole 2. I held it too long and seen it go into the big oak tree, and not fall... then it was gone. :-\
I don't know, this forum sounds like a bunch of serious players which I enjoy and appreciate... (I'm one of you without the skill). I am tired of ignorant people hanging out in the woods smoking pot and trashing these courses... that's bullshit. My second bitch is about dogs. Why on earth are people letting their dogs run around these courses and chase discs/crap ... that is the biggest problem with this course.
Loosing a TeeBird often sends me into a rant, also. >:D
Loosing a glowbie...now that just makes me cry. :'(
I just want all the Hole 16 haters out there I got my first Ace on that hole at West Park. I was with a witness and he said he wouldn't have believed me if he wasn't there to see it. I must say I have never been more excited than at the time. I threw a "thumber" over hand throw and it when way up came down through the trees and right in the basket. A complete luck shot but either way an Ace and my first one.
:D
I always look at #16 and think... the basket is right in front of you if you could just throw a straight hard shot right down through the trees it could be a nice ace. I love hole 2 AND 16.... everyone has no love for 16
Congrats on the ACE....
pics are up on myspace
Pics are now posted in the gallery
I love the elevation changes at this course. It's so much fun to do a speed round here as the hills provide quite the workout. All in all, the rough isn't too bad and losing discs is only a concern on a few holes (cough, # 16). I've definitely learned not to play this course after rain, as the teeboxes offer no footing when wet. Also, as has been pointed out already, the little creek that runs through the course turns into quite the hazard when flashed full.
Does anyone know what is going to become of hole # 16 once the construction is done? The last few times I've played this course, the chains have been out with a note on the hole map. This note says that the hole will be redone after the construction. Is the basket going to be put right back where it was, or will there be a new location?
watch out for bee;s nest about 50 feet to the left of the basket on FOUR in the bushes
brother set his bag down on the nest and stirred up a bunch of trouble
minor storm damage
some trees down
no real changes here recently
always fun to play
