Club members[-- It is very important that you keep this date open & participate. We only had 12 club members at the last tournament.
I've started e-mailing about this tournament. Can someone go to www.discgolf.com & get e-mail addresses from Wisconsin. I got these cities done already. Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, & New Berlin. I also got every e-mail from Illinois. This is over 160 e-mail addresses. Let's get 50+ @ this tournament!
I say string. Its relatively cheap & visible enough to everyone involved. I think the parks would be more willing to let us drive some stakes into the ground than paint lines on the grass... plus the string would appear more 'straight.'
That is Awesome!!!!! Maybe she can help me shorten my drives... :)
Speaking of guest appearances.... what about the Tourist guy? Any news on a plastic vendor?
Again, I ask what is the status of a plastic vendor at the event? Do we have the Tourist guy? Do we need to find somebody else??
I will donate the use of my M14 for the blast, plus weedwhacking skillz and anything else it takes to get the job done.
I also could probably work late some night and print up scorecards, hell - I'll fire off Excel and start working on some! :D
Okay, this was created using Excel XP, however anyone using Excel 2000 and maybe even 97 should be able to open it without incident.
Let me know if you have suggestions on anything to change, add, etc. This is the product of about 10 minutes...
I'm sure that if JoJo plays (almost guaranteed provided he gets off of work - ask him yourself @ leagues) he will be Advanced.
He doesn't have web or email access at home (actually, I'm not sure if he does at all anywhere), so he doesn't see this stuff.
Aight, here's the new card with the suggestions Jim made.
Any other modifications? I figure I'll wait until a couple days before the event before printing, however, any idea how many we'll need?
Indeed! Weird. Here it is. Obviously, the text can be edited for the other rounds and such.
Ballpark, how many do you think we'll need?
Since the damn BB won't let me upload a new card, here's a link to it:
http://discontinuum.rafansrule.org/Public/Uploads/bevier-blast_scorecard-v2.xls
Odd, opened up just fine for me.
Must be because I use a PC! :p
Okay, sure. 10 for each round. That includes the recreationals?
Played Fink park again today during lunch... The flyer that had been taped to the back of the first tee sign and was still there yesterday afternoon is now missing.
I would have replaced it had I had a flyer and tape...
I say 9 from the 'crete. Especially if you're playing for money, a CTP is like pulling a slot machine - you may or may not hit the jackpot. A tiebreaker round seems the fairest to all.
And I think the tie breaker should be the same for any of the money positions.
Of course! Those are the prize-payout positions.
Last I heard, our fearless president had a call into WPD to do some sprucing up of the course before the blast, including mowing back there. If its as bad as you say, its gonna take a loooong time with weedwhackers to get the grass to an acceptable height.
I'm happy and willing to devote myself & donate gas and string from my trimmer to mow that down on the 8th.
Of course, if anyone had a DR Trimmer or similar that would be muuch better.... (hint, hint)
Jim - heard back from Mike Trigg at all?
As far as how many people we can have w/o needing to add more holes, I purposely made the scorecards with six player lines in case something like that happens. With six players per hole, you get a max of 84 on 14 holes.
I agree that a much nicer, permanent message board is needed at Bevier. Maybe the park department will agree to that for the new year.
Nevermind on the CTP questions, called Jim & got the answer myself. We will have two CTPs during rounds three and four, for the same holes. One will be for the recs, the other for the competitives.
Curious about CTPs... Will there be a separate CTP each round for each division, a separate CTP for competetive and rec, or just one CTP per round regardless of division?
I'm making up the scorecards now & that question popped into my mind.
Thats a good question about CR. I don't really need to replace anything, but I did want to pick up some new plastic (hopefully) before the event. Jim, can you confirm with them what time they will be @ the park? I'm sure they'd make plenty of sales before we start and between all the rounds (not to mention after the tourney when people will have new found cash burning a hole in their pocket...)
This was discussed previously in this thread, but we can bring it to the most recent page...
Myself - M14
Jim - Portable Mach 2(?)
Chud - M14, I believe
Uhm..... I think someone else was supposed to bring a SkillShot, but that still leaves us short at least two, if not three baskets just to complete the course. Do we really want to scramble to find a fourth just in case we need it? I say make a couple fivesomes before adding another hole. It'll go slow enough as it is if we have a group on every hole.
Well provided that Shawn doesn't need it, why not have one of our Kenosha members that will be playing in the Blast pick it up and bring it to the event? For example, I know that Myk and JoJo will be there, they live in ktown, and I'm sure they would be getting to the course early the day of to warm up and whatnot. Sounds like a perfect combination to me....
Hey now, wasn't volunteering anyone thank you very much. I was just trying to tell jim that he doesn't have to do everything himself....
Delegate, captain. Delegate. :-)
Wow. I really think we're going to have a huge turnout for this event. I hope we put on as good a tourney as people will be expecting!
Oh, I'll be at the course tomorrow sometime after 4 with weed whacker in trunk. I hope & pray that hole A has been mowed & a bridge of some sorts has been improvised. That's gonna be some quality time with the trimmer if not....
Oh, just thought I'd point out that this thread is the longest & most read in the 9 month existence of the message board.
Hey, I'm happy to provide it! :)
What an additional AWESOME piece of news! Perhaps the Callahans will see how good we have been for the course (IMHO) and add their own pressure to WPD about some of the improvements we have been requesting. Regardless, things just keep sounding better and better!
I dunno what to suggest about a spotter/ctp person. I can understand wanting one for the last two rounds when there are two CTPs on the same hole, but you think we need one for the first two?
I want to get to the course around 6 tomorrow morning to warm up and maybe throw the new holes a couple times.
To add to the question of what to bring, other than what's been mentioned already I'd say bring whatever you would want for a long day of disc golf. Of course, during the lunch break there will be time to go get more supplies such as water, beer, snacks, food....
I know the tripod chairs can be found @ walmart, maybe target, possibly Menards and/or Home Depot.
This is starting to get off topic, and I guess I'll add to that......
What about if we were to find out when WPD mows the park, pick up the flags the day before then put them back a day or two later? It will allow people to be able to better find the alternates...
Realistically, how often do you think they mow? Every 10-14 days? We could possibly work out a rotating schedule between people that could commit to taking out and replacing the flags....
Looks like Brett's emails and perhaps the flyers and/or website aregetting the word out. We already have 4 non-members registered for the Blast - and they're from Wisconsin! Very cool! Thanks to all who are spreading the word!
Woo-hoo! I cannot believe you emailed hundreds of disc golfers! HUNDREDS! Wow!
Paul and I started hanging flyers up too - CLC, Shimer College, and I'll get Happy Bills, Jordy's, and a few other courses too, like Milan and Geneseo in two weeks (when I take Danny back for school). Great work - lets start thinking of detail stuff now, like how we can clearly mark OB, measuring temp holes, CTPs, etc. We can make this year's BLAST the tourney at which people have the most fun all summer!
Hey, great! Does anyone have any colored (or just plain white) string or rope? We'd need nearly 1000 feet. If one of you guys wants to do that, I'll make sure you get reimbursed if necessary.
Just found out that Barrett White, one of the top female pros, will be attending the Blast - as well as holding a throwing clinic during the lunch break! She and I are working out details now.... She is also planning on bringing some other players, too. HOW COOL IS THAT???!!! :-)
If I don't hear from Kurt at Tourist by Friday, I'll seek either Ed Burde (Libertyville/Lombard) or I'll try to get a special deal with Disc Golf World. Rick at DGW is open to helping us even more now that we are growing. Also, I found out fromm a third party that Tourist has several lawsuits pending for copyright infringement. This might be why he hasn't communicated........
I made it up to play KEnosha's league last night and had a great time. Tony and Wildflower from Chain Reaction were there and were very interested in selling at the Blast. They've got a great selection, decent prices and a bright yellow van. Gotta love it! Tony said he'll get me an answer today. Also emailed with Kurt at Tourist. He's trying to make major PDGA tour stops and will probably be in Pennsylvania in the middle of September.
Chain Reaction is out of Milwaukee and exposure with him can also help increase attendance. I'm glad you got some flyers to Tom Christensen - working that way is needed too.
It looks like Jelly Belly may not be too keen on sponsorship, but we're gonna try anyway. I love the booger beans!
Hey guys, this is coming together!
Mirth - nice job on da scorecards! Would it be possible to add a column for player's division, and make a seperate card for each round (says "Round 1" or "Round 4")? Lemme know. And thanks for the use of the basket!
Brett, I'm doing a new scoreboard too. Big and sweet and sturdy. Almost like I knew what I was doing. I've also started making the certificates. We'll also be able to use my basket and hopefully Chud's. The Friday idea is a good one, I'll plan on it. Great work!
Thanks, but didn't you forget something?
Mirth - thanks for doing that!
When I went to the link, all I saw was ASCII test and some html coding. So, if you have time, print out 10 scorecards for each round. I am sure they'll look fab baby!
BTW, did you get your Gazelle out of my car?
Agreed. So be it! But there will only be a playoff in case of ties for 1st through 5th place in Recreatonal, and 1st through 3rd in each Competitive division.
I spoke with Mike briefly yesterday and he said he'd tell is maintenance crew to do it before the Blast. I am meeting with him next week sometime (waiting for a callback on exacts).
However, we can do some work as well. We will need a bridge. We need to do some general cleanup of large branches and perhaps fill in a couple large holes that I remember falling into. There's also still a few discs back there from the Widdershins.
I will be out at Bevier sometime Saturday to take a deeper look at what needs. Yes, keep the 8th scheduled for the most work. Gotta get those bees outta there as well. Da sooner da better!
THANKS Brett and Mirth and Bill and everyone who wants to help!
Well, I believe 29 have pre-registered electronically as of 9-5-02. Looks like a good field. I think the Competitive Women should play the 4 rounds with the other Competitive players. But even though all Comp Women are playing together, I have not divided it up into Pro/Adv/Am because that would leave one women per div. Can't do that. I suggest we simply give Comp Women a handicap system (Pro=0, Adv=1, Am=2) and still have them play against each other. Any word on BC's or Jojo's beter halves? I really think the women will have the most fun out there!
Regarding yesterday's meeting with Mike Trigg:
It went very well! He committed to spruce up as usual with the crushed limestone skirts on the baskets, low-cut mowing, etc. He also will take care of the hornets' nest near the 9th hole (which I sat on last night and came away unscathed, thanks to Bill).
He will also get his crew to mow under the power lines and put a temp bridge over the creek back there.
He will also loan us the big WPD tent again. If we get bad weather, he will give us use of the building (field house) unless it is booked. Stop laughing, Conover! He will get back to be whether they can spare any bark chips for the wooded tees. If so, he'll provide whatever he can on next Friday.
He said he has been visiting the website occasionally and loves how active we are. I filled him in on the Round Lake and Gurnee and Kenosha happenings and his jaw dropped! He has a meeting with the WPD Board of Directors next week and is going to let them know how much we have going on and how many positive emails he has received about disc golf this summer.
Mike asked us for our 2003 schedule before November. He wants to give us priority scheduling before the soccer league(s) start hounding him. We are easier to work with and receive no complaints, unlike the soccer folks. Let's meet a week after the Blast and get a lineup going!
Other stuff is coming together too. I am almost done with the scoreboard. We are added 4 CTPs, one per round, for the minidisc bottle openers. Rick at DGW may also send us some bonus stuff next week. With Brett and Bill and ??? cleaning out the wooded holes with their whackers, the course will sparkle!
I am very excited about this event - moreso than ever before!!!
WHAT WE STILL NEED: We need someone to help out at the front table from 11am-4pm. We also need at least 2 spotters - one for the temp hole under the power lines, and one for the CTP hole(s).
I also need someone to ut up road signs, directing drivers to Bevier. I have signs made. In the past, I have stapled/nailed them to telephone poles and / or taped them to other metal objects; one on GreenBay, north of Grand Ave (going north); one on GreenBay north of Yorkhouse (going south); the same for Lewis Ave and even maybe at the Grand Ave exits off Route 41. Please volunteer.
Tomorrow, I will post the food roster as it stands so far. We may still need some food stuffs.
All in all, we are doing well! THANKS to all those who have signed up and/or are volunteering in any capacity!
Tony said they'd prob be there @10am. I will call him and try to convince him to arrive earlier, since it would be in his best interest. Thanks for the input.
We've got:
Mirth's
Chud's
Jim's
John Brakel's
WE NEED ONE MORE.
How about Shawn? If you do not come out, may we borrow your basket? I can drive up Thursday night.....
Jojo's if necessary
Tonepole if necessary
Great! Thanks, Shawn!
Brett and/or Myk - can you please coordinate w/Shawn for Friday afternoon? Thanks! That will complete our basket needs!
Also, PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING FOOD SATURDAY! Kirsten is whipping up some fine yummies, but will need everyone to contribute something as we spoke last week. I'll call folks tonight to remind 'em, as soon as I find my list.
Also, being a dumbass, I made a map page on the website and forgot to link it anywhere. What a dink!
Anyway, here's the temp layout:
http://discontinuum.org/Blast02_Map_temp
Enjoy!
Captain Scootophollos
Forgot to tell y'all:
Mike Trigg said that Joanne and Harold Callahan WILL BE AT THE BLAST! I'm donating one of my unthrown club stamped discs and would like club members to sign it. I'll present it to the Callahans at the Blast with a big THANK YOU. If a bunch of us sign it, it would make a great impression.
It would also make a great photo opportunity, especially if Barrett White is there too.
The way this event seems to be exploding is blowing my mind! THANKS for everyone who is bringing food and helping in other ways!!!
WHAT WE STILL NEED: A volunteer to help do CTP measuring/marking for 2 rounds and to help at the front table HQ for 2 rounds. My afternoon helper has just bailed and Kirsten must leave at 11:00. Paul said he would split his time as needed between CTP and HQ, but we need at least one more staffer around in the pm.
Also, I am out of town all day tomorrow after 12noon, so if I do not return a call or email, that is why. See you all Saturday morning! Woo-hoo!
Quotemirth (09-12-2002 09:12 p.m.):
Oh, just thought I'd point out that this thread is the longest & most read in the 9 month existence of the message board.
Mirth - Not that this thread needs diversions or more length, but I need to tell you that this board has become INVALUABLE to members - and others, too! I gets hit so often, and has been coming in really handy to communicate.
"It's not just for breakfast anymore!"
THANK YOU for putting it together and giving us better communication.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
EVERYONE!!!!!
SO many people helped to make this event our best ever! Thanks to:
Jason, who figured the best payout structure and took registrations, posted numbers, answered questions, and much more!
Paul, who stayed out in the field and measured and recorded CTPs for every group - every round!
Brett, who emailed nearly 800 people - a bunch of whom would not have shown up or even known about it without him. He also whacked more weeds than I've ever smoked. :-) Brett was truly a driving force this year!
Mirth, whose scorecards ROCKED and who also helped whack weeds and more....
BC, Jay, Adrian, and others all helped as well.
Without the efforts of all of us, it would not have been the HUGE success it was!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
Also, thanks to everyone for bringing food, allowing us use of walkie-talkies, baskets and more. YOU SHOULD ALL BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELVES!!! PEOPLE HAD A TON OF FUN!
OK OK OK. I wil really try to post em all tonight, but no promises. I might have to finish tomorrow.
Also.....
I neglected (bad, bad Scooter) to thank Bill and Angela for prepping the course. Sorry! Special thanks to Angela for playing! Took guts to play with the big dogs, baby!
I think I also forgot to THANK all the players! Shooooot, it would not have been a tourney without YOU! Frog, thanks for your coolness and pateince with non-signers like me. Many folks have commented on "the deaf dudes" and how wonderful it is that disc golf can be played (and played well) by all kinds of peeps. I mean, c'mon! Tony J's legally blind and can whoop my brainless butt!
If I have managed to forget to thank anyone else, spank you, I mean, THANK YOU!
I'm just glad to have so many passionate disc golfers that I can call friends.
WPD cuts the grass every Friday, unless it is really dry, then 10 days, but they always go back to the Friday schedule.
I will check the scores. Two scorecards were missing names on the back, so I took my best guess. Gimme a day to update.
Ok- club members get active. I've made a list of courses in the area. Hit them with flyers. Let me know what courses you can post flyers at. Keep them in your car & post if you play @ a course. Here's the list of courses in the area. Waukegan, Kenosha, Round Lake, Libertyville, Crystal Lake, Buffalo Grove, Highland Park (2), Glencoe, Streamwood, Elk Grove, Lombard, Downers Grove, Naperville. If you play a course not on this list please post a flyer. I've hit Round Lake, 2 Highland Park Courses, & Glencoe. Waukegan is a no brainer. We need someone to post @ Kenosha & Libertyville. Jason can get Streamwood & Elk Grove. I'll get out to Buffalo Grove & Crystal Lake. I have a friend that may be able to get Lombard Downers Grove, & Naperville. Let's be heard!!!!!
I've e-mailed over 300 players so far from Illinois, Wisconsin, & Indiana. I plan on e-mailing Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, & Missouri in the next week. I've had a few people add the Bevier Blast to their website. I envision the Bevier Blast (Best of the MidWest). Anyone have any suggestions for publicity or about the tournament?
Sweet Myk! Do you have flyers? I've got some in my car with the plastic sleeves.
MyndCraft AKA Jay said he was going to play as well. I'm playing with him tomorrow morning at Buffalo Grove. Is there a max were are going to allow? Depending on the pre-registration we may have to find some good baskets & set up 18.
Flyers are up, e-mails to 8 states & over 500+ are out, and the publicity is well under way! I think it would be good for all club members to pre-register considering Jim is listing everyone that has online.
AWESOME!!!!!!
Jim,
Have you ordered discs for prizes yet? Just wondering. When you do, I would like to order a disc. If you need help, i'll throw a list of discs together for the prizes.
That would be sweet if we could get flyers up @ Joliet. Let's keep up the great work of getting them up @ staying up. Here are confirmed courses that have had flyers put up. UW Parkside, Bevier, Round Lake, Adler, Buffalo Grove, Streamwood, Highland Park (2), Glencoe, Cyrstal Lake, Elk Grove. Jay, I put one up at Elk Grove about 3 weeks ago so who knows if it is still there. I'm going to try to post them at both Lombard courses as well. They have a big disc golf community.
While in Libertyville today I stopped by the WalGreens to check out their discs. I ran into Tom Christiansen. He is the one who stocks all the discs in the area. I told him about the Blast & he said he would put up a few flyers for us. He is in charge of Buffalo Grove, Streamwood, Crystal Lake, & Elk Grove. Jim- Have you talked to anyone about selling discs at the BLAST. He was very nice & he has a ton of discs!
Nice work Mirth. Jim-Sweet!! You told me about it. I'm sure it looks sweet. Also, It may be a good idea to make a check list for the tournament. This way we can use the same check list every year & don't have to start from scratch. I find this very helpful in my coaching as well. I have a pregame preparation checklist that helps things run smoothly. Just a suggestion.
What needs to get done.
1. Marking of alternate holes 10-27 (Brett)
2. Creation of alternate holes & measure distance. Create tee signs for each.
3. WeedWhacking (Mirth & Brett)
4. Prizes (Jim)
5. Food (Signup for club members)
6. 5 Extra Baskets for Tourney
7. Saturday morning setup
8. Score Cards
9. Certificates for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for all 5 divisions- Rec, Am, Adv, Pro, & Female
Anything else we need to do?
Friday the 13th i'll be out at Bevier working around 2:30PM. I'm going to mark each alternate with the orange flags & spray paint. This may be a good day for some of us to take a half day to have a little fun.

If you know anyone who is going to play, please contact Jim. It is important to get these names on the internet for advertisement & for preparation of prizes & payouts.
This could be a very successful tournament for us. I see a possibility of 40+ players at this point. Lots of club members on the list & possibility of other showing up is good.
Pro- Shawn & Beast?
Adv- Bill, Jojo, Chud?
Am- Brandon, Carl, Matt, Barry, & others from past tournaments?
Rec- Rene, Bicente, & others from past tournaments?
Female- Anyone have girlfriends or wives that play?
GREAT NEWS!! JIM contacted Chain Reaction Discs out of Milwaukee, WI. They will be selling discs at the Bevier Blast. The big yellow van will be loaded with sweets discs.
Sweet!
Another note for the Blast: Do we have an official tie breaker for first place? What sort of playoff do we have if any?
Fellas! We've got some work to do if we plan on using the alternate hole behind #8. I went back there today & the grass is over 6 feet tall. I am 6 feet tall & I could barely see over it. There is somewhat of a path left but it needs some work. Spotters for this hole would be great. I have a feeling the Rec & Ams may have some big problems. I suggest that we plan on staying after best shot on the 8th to do some work. Anyone game? A garbage pickup would help as well.
Bill said he would help as well. He has a trimmer. So with Bill, Mirth, & Me, we could do some damage!
Jim,
How did the meeting with Trigg go? Also, any predictions on how many will be at the blast. My guess is 52!!
Awesome! I am also pumped about the Blast. We better prepare for 60+. The word is out & who knows. Do we have any other decent portable baskets? Maybe we could add another hole if that many end up playing. If we get too many what do we do? I figure if we are playing 14 holes with 4 players per hole, we could easily accomodate 56. Better too many than too little though. That sounds great from Trigg. They always get the park looking nice. That takes care of #9 under the power lines. Really we could get the weed whacking done on Sunday after leagues. I hope WPD realizes how much the club is growing & that more & more people are playing disc golf @ Bevier. I think a NICE bulletin board near #1 is a high priority right now. There are a lot of first time players. It would be nice to put maps out & our club info.
On page two of this post, I have a list of players that have either pre-registered, told me, or I thought there would be a good possibility that they would play. So far there are 42 on that list. If you know someone who is for surely not going to play, let me know.
Saw 2 guys palying @ Bevier Sunday that are playing at the Blast. I played with 1 of them at the B. Grove Tournament. Hopefully they'll bring more. They play at Streamwood & they get around 20 at their leagues.
Holes #7 & #8 have been trimmed. The paths are really clear.
On Friday, i'm going to mark all the alternates with orange flags & paint lines for the tee area. I got 2 cases of pop today.
Score Cards are taken care of. (PENS?)
Score Board is done.
Alternate holes are measured & marked.
Someone needs to put up signs.
The pay schedule is done.
Hopefully the park district takes care of the mowing & trimming on alternate A behind #8. If not we aren't going to be able to play that hole.
I'll be out at Bevier Friday around 2:15PM if anyone wants to join me.
Anything else we need to take care of.
Going to play on Thursday night if anyone wants to practice.
COOL FROG! I think we've seen you guys out at Bevier a few times this summer. Welcome aboard & we'll see you Saturday!
The alternates are going to tough. I did not throw A today. Did not want to lose a disc in the rough. B from the long position is a challenge. It is a nice anhyzer shot but fairly long. Severe rough to left & right if you miss. The short tee is almost identical to #8. Straight shot & about the same distance. C will be interesting. From the long position the little elevation in front of the tee may snag a few discs if you try to keep it low. If you shoot high you have a good chance you will carry into the stream on #9. I'm staying way right. The short position is not a hard shot but if you miss left you will be in trouble. D from the long is going to be tough to duece. It's not that tough of a hole but the distance will take away a lot of dueces. I didn't come close with any of my drives. The pin is going to be fairly close to the center field fence on the baseball diamond. I'm sure a few will end up ob. The short is very 2able. E from both positions are very 2able. Nice hyzer hole around the left field fence of the baseball field. F, if played is a nice hole. Too hard to describe. It is along Yorkhouse through the trees.
I'm going to have to adjust my prediction for the blast. I'm going to guess 63.
I'll be out @ Bevier Thursday & Friday. I'm going to do some more weed whacking & clean up work. I'm going to practice also. Anyone going to be around?
Randomly Selected Disc Golf Rule of the Moment:
TIES 804.07
A. If there is a tie at the level of a cut, all players at that level shall advance.
B. Between rounds when the groups are being reset, tied positions shall be broken. The player with the lowest score in the most recent round shall have the highest ranking when the scorecards/positions are reset. In the event of low score ties, the ties shall be broken by the director through any consistently applied manner.
C. Final ties for first place must be broken by sudden death play. Sudden death play shall begin with hole number one unless a different hole is designated by the director prior to the start of the tournament. Final ties for other ranks shall be officially recorded as ties. Prize money distribution to tied players (other than for first place) shall be determined by adding the total money allocated to the number of positions represented by the tied players and dividing that by the number of players tied. Trophy distribution for ties may be determined by sudden death play or by any related disc golf skill event determined by the director.
Who is bringing their baskets to the Blast? So right now we have 13 holes planned for Saturday. That means we need 4 baskets. If we end up adding another we need another basket. I also thought if we could find another basket we could add another alternate. This would be a total of 15 holes & we could accomodate 60 players w/ 4 per hole.
I will @ Bevier today & Friday around 2PM both days. If my green explorer will be in the lot I am there.
Saw a couple from Crystal Lake that said they would be there Saturday.
Mirth,
I just got off the phone with Jim. He talked to M. Trigg today & they said they were going to take care of the area behind #8. If not we have some quality workers on the way. You, Myk, Me, Bill, & a special reinforcement has been called up. This guy gets the shit done! I agree this tournament is going to be a success. Let's make it great so people come back.
Here is what I have to get done tomorrow.
1. Mark & Flag all the alternate tees.
2. With chalk write Disc Golf Tournament Today; Watch for Flying Disc, on the walking path.
3. Weed Whacking
4. Garbage pickup on #7 & #9
Should be a fun filled day. Jim said he is going to be hanging signs @ 6:30AM on Saturday. I'm planning on getting there around 7 to help put up the portables & get other things ready.
30% chance of showers Saturday morning increasing to 50% in the afternoon.
Frog Man, I figured with a name like that, you would be able to retrieve a ton of discs out of the water with your abilities. Yeah, i'll bring my rake & VanMaster has a big ass stick. I'll be out around 7:00AM. The course is ready to go. All we need to do is get the baskets set up. All alternates have been marked with flags & spray painted lines. Alternate A behind #8 is looking great. The park district did some good work today. So did Myk, Keith, Mirth, Shawn, Angela & Bill. Looks like Chain Reaction Discs will be out early selling plastic. We will also have to set up Camp Bevier when we get there. I'm sure Jim will have a lot done by 7AM. I think he is getting there around 6AM. Saw 2 more guys today from Kenosha that weren't preregistered. They are going to play. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE WEATHER. FORECAST CHANGED. CLOUDY 78, 6-8MPH WINDS, NO RAIN TILL 6pm. HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW!!! What an awesome day. I think everyone was happy. 69 attended. Barrett White was cool! Got to play 3 rounds with her. Chain Reaction Discs were great. They sold a boat load of plastic. The payouts were awesome. Adrian hit an ace on Alternate E. I could go on & on but i'm beat.
Frog,
Thanks for coming! We really enjoyed meeting you guys. We're glad you had a good time. Stop by the message board often.
Take Care!

What a great weekend! This is why payouts were so high!!!!!!!
What do you guys think. Move Widdershins Open to Round Lake & keep Bevier Blast in Waukegan.
I think we should stay away of Crystal Lake. Tom Christiansen runs his tournaments there. He also puts on tournaments at Elk Grove, Buffalo Grove, & Streamwood.
Bill,
That would be a good idea. I forgot to do that Sunday after best shot. If you can that would be great!
great idea guys!
thanks Jon! We will discuss this idea at our next club meeting.
i am still amazed that 69 players showed. this is why being involved with DISContinuum is so much fun. debates, discussion, planning, organizing, & all the other garbage will payoff in the long run. mirth, this board has really contributed in this process. thanks!
Angela and I will be there around 5:30 if anyone is up for a casual round or two.
what should I bring to a tourney(other than my discs).
I've only been to 2 tourneys, but water, bug spray, and a rain poncho (or something like that) seemed very useful. Probably need a towel to wipe discs off and maybe a second pair of shoes you can go in the water in case a disc gets away. A fold up chair is not a bad idea either......and $$ for discs (and fees). I think I'll bring a small camera this time too. There were a couple times that I wish I had one at the last tournament. That's all I can think of.
.. .can someone bring a big ass stick to try to rescue some discs?
I'll put my 8 footer in the van. That and some water shoes might do the trick.
Scores?? Does anybody know who won what?
Adrian won the Pro division (acing the last hole of the last round). It was a playoff for second between Paul Kuffel and Patrick (I forgot his last name). Pat won. Brett got 4th, Barret White got 5th, and Barry and I tied for last.
I don't remember the name of the guy who won the advanced division. All I know is that he beat Adrian's score by 4 or 5 points. A lot of the advanced players beat the Pro division players.
Do we need to pick up those pink flags left from the tournament? My guess is that the guys who mow Bevier won't like them there. I can pick them up today after work if need be.
I'll pick the flags up today, then bring them to Best Shot on Sunday. We should probably get a definite "ok" from WPD before we leave them in on a weekly basis.
I have come up with a tentative payout schedule for the Blast. I will post it on Monday after Brett and I get a chance to work out the kinks this weekend. It's set up in excel, so we can easily enter in the the number of players and it will automatically calculate the payouts for each division. I'll volunteer the use of my laptop if everyone thinks it would be easier to use rather than sitting there with a calculator to figure out the percentages and $ payouts.
Here is the schedule of payouts for the Blast. I believe Brett, Jim and Mirth have already taken a look at them. Please let me know what you think. They are based on the payout percentages listed on the PDGA page.
sorry, forgot to attach the file.
excellent, Since there will be real pros coming does that mean that I can play in the Am division again?
I would not do more then 5 a hole.....
looks like it might t-storm 6 would really be slow.
Hey Al, what is up with your brother Adrian? I saw a post that someone saw him playing at parkside when we were there. Why didn't you guys stop to say "hi." I think this has gone on to far, your the 1 that shunned him at leagues that day not us. I looked at the confirmed for the blast and saw your name but not his. Tell him that Shawn said to stop this childish behavior and show up for the Blast, let's forget about it and move on. I don't want to hear about Adrian sightings, I want to see him back on top of the standings again......
How about I bring my basket to bevier Friday afternoon and drop it off with somebody there. Maybe that somebody can give me the 411 on new hole locations for the blast, I really would like to play them. I'm also not going to be able to make best shot, I'll be up at Devils Lake.
What time you playing Parkside? I have the day off and will meet you if you want to shot a round together. Otherwise, I should be at Bevier at 2...
Day before a tourney, I wash the disc I plan on using, trim nails, get water, snacks, chair, get clean towels, umbrella if chance of rain to keep disc and towels dry, cash and most important walk thru the course in your mind and know what your going to do before you step foot on the pad and don't let anyone change your mind by thinking that "he used a valk, I should probaly use 1 too." Know your game, relax and most of all just have fun. When it is no longer fun your game suffers. Hope this helps.
Every tournament that I have played in, we braved the elements. Have played in sideways rain/sleet mix that had people not having a good time, but if you prepare yourself for it you might accually have fun and laugh at others being miserable. The only reason to stop is if sever weather is happening and then horns will go off to stop play and then start up again once it has passed or rain has slowed down. If it rains I find that a golf umbrella, plenty of towels that can be hung in the umbrella to dry off, a wide brimmed hat and my secret is a hand warmer to keep hands dry. Keep disc under your shirt until you are ready to throw, it is important to keep the grip on the disc dry so that it will not slip out before you want it to. Also if it is wet out, play from behind your drive. What I mean is don't put a mini down unless you need the extra few inches. Every time you put 1 down and move your disc you are getting your hands wet again.
Scores?? Does anybody know who won what?
I can take Kenosha and Libertyville if no one else wants it.
I have two flyers, but no sleeves or anything. I was going to hang them at Parkside, but it's been trying to rain all week and I didn't want to waste good flyers. I can bring some to the Parkside league (which plays on Mondays) and try to get the word out to those guys. Do we have flyers for the club and league as well? I think some of the guys at the Parkside league would probably be interested in playing with us as well.
I know it would take a lot, but we could use string to mark the out of bounds if we needed to. Or we could get that stuff that the city uses to mark water and power lines. Or we could ask the soccer players to line up along side the holes. They can practice passing while we drive!!
Jojo and I talked about it the other night and I'm almost certain that he's going to play in the Advanced division.
That's beautiful!!! The big yellow van is always loaded with a ton of plastic. I can't wait to play!!
Jojo got the day off work, so he's in!!
I got $1 that says 60+ people show up.
Stellar idea!! I've got a couple discs that need to be replaced, too. Hopefully they'll get there early enough for us to get some plastic and throw it for a while to get used to it. I don't think I'd buy something that I intended to use without throwing it at least once ot twice first.
Hey Mirth, I can volunteer for myself just fine. :P
Seriously though, I have absolutely no problem picking up an extra pin from somewhere. Just let me know where to go. I'm sure Jojo can bring his pin too if you need it.
Hey Brett, what time are you getting to the course on Friday? I have the whole day off, thank god, and would love to help out and play a bit. Let me know when to be there.
I'm probably going to play a quick round at Parkside when I wake up, and then head over to Bevier. I figure I'll be there between 2 and 3.
I'll probably be at Parkside sometime around 11 or so, and then heading to Bevier straight after.
Although Allison can't play the tourney, she said she'd come down after work, which gets done about 12. I'll ask her again about what time she can get there. if it's the right timing, I'm sure she wouldn't mind being a spotter/measuring type person.
As you can tell, I got up a little bit later that I thought I would. I'll still try to be at Bevier on time though.
QuoteJim (07-29-2002 10:33 p.m.):
Hey, great! Does anyone have any colored (or just plain white) string or rope? We'd need nearly 1000 feet. If one of you guys wants to do that, I'll make sure you get reimbursed if necessary.
I can bring string, but need to know what time to be there ect...
Quotemirth (07-30-2002 02:50 p.m.):
That is Awesome!!!!! Maybe she can help me shorten my drives... :)
*MyndCraft Grumbles*
And here I am trying to get longer drives :-)
QuoteShawn (07-30-2002 05:30 p.m.):
excellent, Since there will be real pros coming does that mean that I can play in the Am division again?
No, I want to stand a chance thank you :-)
Well I got a flyer up at Lippold Park yesterday and talked to a guy and his girlfriend who were out there, they sounded intrested so lets keep are fingers crossed.
Come friday I will be posting a flyer at Elk Grove village as well, if no one has yet, and if they had well I'll make sure it's still there.
Joliet... Have we put up flyers there? I know its a ling way aways, but why not? Anyways if someone has a MS-Word or better yet Star(K)-Office(stupid windows) file of the flyer could you e-mail it to me? I have a friend who goes down to visit his family ni Joliet every weekend I could have him stop and post the flyers at the various courses down there.
Thats all for now happy frolfing and see you all at leagues.
First of all Im so exiced I can't stand it!
With that being said, unless the baby decides to be born a few months early the powers themselves couldn't keep me from the Blast.
Aaron was going to play in the Rec division, but has to go out of town that weekend. He will be at leagues this Sunday though.
Theres a chance we might get a few women coming down from Wisconsin, but not sure yet.
Btw, nice Ace Brett!! Now follow up with a 2nd one during the tourney, but none of that off the tree crap :-) Just kidding Jim :-)
1 quick thing before my question...
Adrian if you read this or someone passes it on, I wasn't a member of the club when whatever happened happened, but I knw everyone speaks nothing but highly of you and wish you would come back.. So thats about all I can say to that.
Okay question time. How early is Chain Reaction going to be out there? I need to replace a few discs for the Blast and would like to buy them from CR, but if I cant do that before the first round, I might have to stop somewhere before the tourney.
Just curious,
I need to replace my Valks I lost :-)
Wow boards been really active :-)
I am prediciting 64 people to turn out though if its rainning in the moring I would say take 10 or soo off that number.
I am going to try to get out their early, will have to see how it goes(I really should move closer Evanston is a pain)
random side note Mirth you guys hiring?
Okay back onto the Blast buisness.... So do we know if Chain Reaction is going to try to make it out their earlier before the first round?
And heres a stupid question(well maybe it isn't), but what should I bring to a tourney(other than my discs). Just wondering since well I've never played in one before or even 52 holes in one day for that matter. So any advice?
Peace everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool thanks guys, any help was appreciated :-) Shawn its too bad your not going to be there, I've never acctually witnesed your cannon arm I hear so much about :-)
VanMaster hello btw, congrats(better late than never) and it will be a pleasure to meet you.
Question about a chair for anyone, where can i find one of those little stool ones? I have one of those quad chairs but their very bulky.
Well everyone have a good day, get lots-o-rest. I wanna see some Aces tommorrow :-)
Frog]] Well I know CE-Valk(Brett) caries a rake like onject in his trunk that I have used before, if its out too far though count on wading a little water. I lost two discs out on the water last week acctually.
Mirth]] 6:00 wow your a trooper, lets see that would mean I would have to wake up at 4:00 am so I could leave by 5:00. WHile I would love to play the new holes, I doubt highly my body would let me do it. If I have a restless night and wake up early though who knows I moight see you there.
Hell as Long as I am playing I could care less where we play. I do like the idea though of having a tourney elsewhere. Round Lake would be good so would Crystal Lake.
I bet we would get a HUGE turnout at Crystal there are always a zillion people there and its 18 holes. Only problem is its a bit far away.
Anyways theres my 10 cents my 2 cents is free.
sorry I have that stupid song stuck in my head.
Im gonna try to get there kinda early too. probably 6:30. I just want to warm up a little and get in a little more practice with my new putter.
Whats gonna happen if the weather is really bad. Do we just tough it out, is there going to be a make up date?
Guys great tourney! I had to split right when we finished. Josh was late. He didn't really mind since he won a new disc. Anyways, Jim and everyone, I had a Blast! Little disappointed I didn't make top 8 for the payout, but oh well. Next tourney I'll play better. I really needed to practice the alternates. I didn't think we were playing them. I did get pretty good at the cements (under par both times). Well thanks again!
The guys how won the Am was only a couple behind Adrain's score.
Hey Jim was there a few mathematical errors on Saturday by the players? Dave and I tied for 3rd with 83 but I looked at the scores today and he's listed at 87 I believe. And I don't remember there being that many people in the 80's.
So many thoughts after playing the Bevier Blast. Jim and the rest of the club guys did a great job running the tournament!
There was some talk after the tourney about running a pdga tournament at Bevier. I know there were some people against it. I can understand that. A tourney like the Bevier Blast can be fun and there should be a place for them. Perhaps an additional pdga tournament could be run there. I'd like to see the course get rated. I'd like to see more players in the area exposed to the pdga. I have become a pdga "thumper" in last couple of years, and the pdga has started to do some great things for the amateur ranks.
It's something to think about.
