Title: Joliet Disc Golf Tournaments for '06
Post by: maa4208 on March 01, 2006, 06:28:38 PM
My dad has been helping Gary Lewis with the course directory for the Joliet area and he also said that Gary will be sanctioning the Am. Day for the Channahon Tournament and Illinois State.

My dad just completed the sanction agreements and emailed them in.

Here's the dates:

19th Channahon Classic - Community Park, Channahon, IL
Amateur/Novice/Recreational - Sept. 23, 2006 - sanctioned
Pro/Advanced - Sept. 24, 2006 - sanctioned

The Lumber Cup - West Park, Joliet, IL
Amateur/Novice/Recreational - June 3, 2006 - not sanctioned
Pro/Advanced - June 4, 2006 - sanctioned

26th Illinois State Championships - The Oaks, Mokena, IL
Amateur/Novice/Recreational - July 8, 2006 - sanctioned
Pro/Advanced - July 9, 2006 - sanctioned

As always, any questions contact Gary Lewis

You know, I thought I'd give a little FYI, thats all.

If the right elbow and the left shoulder stay reasonably healthy, I hope to play the Illinois State Championships this year.

Bit confusing....did you mean to say that he was sanctioning the Am day for Channy & IL State? The Lumber cup AM day seems to be unsanctioned, or maybe that's just pending the sanctioning from the PDGA?

Seems more likely at Channahon, I remember him asking about it there.  Most people wanted it sanctioned.

Sorry about that. The Lumber Cup is not sanctioned for Ams. Only Pro/Adv. Thats what I meant. I'll fix my post now.

Well, I'm really glad Gary is sanctioning lower divisions for the Illinois State Championships because Jon and I were getting pretty close to stepping up and running the PDGA Intermediate and Recreational Illinois State Championships.  Now we can settle down and go back to what we were doing.

I just received notice from David Gentry, he's received the sanction agreements and things are a go.  As to Gary not sanctioning The Lumber Cup, he's still apprehensive about sanctioning lower events.  A lot of locals that AREN'T PDGA members will be charged that extra $5 fee to enter, and he's worried that the turnout will be lower.  The PDGA eliminated Am Masters as a division and there are many here that will have to compete as Intermediate or move to Adv. Masters, and that's got Gary concerned.  I have competed with many that I just mentioned in the Am Masters and I don't know if they will play now or not.  Only time will tell.  I applaude Gary for making this step as I am one of the many that wanted him to sanction the lower division days.  Now he has and since I'm moving up the ranks I will play advanced master but will be on the course to help on the lower day and I hope to see many Discontinuum members show up.  Let's support Gary and show him it's a good move.

Peace all ... Throw well !

I think Gary will be happy with his decision. He'll cointinue to get most of the same players and retain many that end up becoming PDGA members. There is no doubt more players from this area will travel down there. I know that was keeping a lot of players from playing Gary's event in this area. All in all this will help disc golf & the promotion of the PDGA. Generally, PDGA members are more likely to travel than nonmembers.

Anyone know if Gary Lewis is running a World's Biggest event this year? A lot of people at my new job have expressed interest in trying disc golf. Just being lazy & hoping someone online knows, I can give Gary a call later if nothing else.

I received a Flyer for Worlds Biggest '06 from Jesse S. May 6 & 7. Shorewood on Saturday with 2 rounds of pick your partner doubles starting at 3:30. Should be a good time if you're not going to Wisconsin that weekend.

It's a sign of the times Dan.  I plan on helping quite a bit in the computer arena for Gary - my computer skills FAR surpass my disc golf skills  ;D ... but one day .. I just might win a playoff ... or even remember how to play the silly game.   ;)

So far those baskets are only for winter league winners.  If you can stand freezing your a$$ off with me ... then you can earn a basket.   ;D

[Thread Drift]Brett and I spoke a bit about baskets for IOS events .... I'm still putting some numbers together.

Ok, back on topic.

Anyone that is going to play the Lumber Cup this coming weekend needs to remember that only Pro/Adv day is sanctioned.  Gary did tell me at last week's league that he's gotten more pre-regs than he's ever seen before.  I've uploaded those that have pre-registered using the PayPal link on the Joliet Disc Golf site to the tournament page at PDGA.com.

Also ... if anyone does plan on playing they should make sure they take the time out to play West Park.  As of last Friday, May 26, the park has gone through a little redesign.  Holes 1,2,3,4,12,13,14,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 have been moved from their original locations.  Tee boxes 3 and 23 have been moved to different locations.  The changes on some holes are major, others subtle.  Gary is going to give me the footages and locations so I can update the scorecards before the weekend.  I will post a map as soon as I get it updated.  To date, I am not sure if Gary is going to add the A, B, C baskets near the pavillion or not.

Keep an eye on the PDGA website for the Lumber Cup and www.jolietdiscgolf.com for info and such.

Throw well ...

Only TWO (2) tees have been moved.  All others are in the original placements.  The baskets on the other hand HAVE been moved.  It's worth a look.

I was down there today -  the only really radical changes are:
#3, which is now a straight downhill from around where old #2 basket was (#2 basket now about 30 ft to the left) - basket closer to tee #4, trees down the middle but they're easy to avoid unless it's a tournament round;

#23: tee is at about 11 o'clock from basket #22; tight route but no more difficult than before; no red tee for this one. (not for #3 either)

#4: The biggest change. The basket is tucked right around where old tee #3 is. If the road up there is OB - it comes to within about 10 ft of the basket - this could be a tricky hole if you're going for 2. Otherwise you can just go left and have a fairly open look for a 3 or a long uphill duece try; unless it's a tournament.

The other changes just make the routes a little bit longer. #11 looks like it's had flash flooding lately, all the plant growth is covered with mud and there's still lots of standing water out there.

Bear in mind that they are still unofficial until the final paperwork is turned in.

It was a great tournament and the weather was PERFECT!

Somehow my name changed from Terry "T-Dogg" Miller to Tim Miller.  Anyway - I just PM'd someone to let them know that it was incorrectly reported for my big, bad, 7th place finished.  Yeah, I totally kicked Brett Comincoli's arse!  :)

Ok, now I gotta post what I came here for in the first place.

Mokena next on 7/8!

Tyler & I will probably play a few practice rounds this weekend, Sunday most likely. (hopefully I can get a lower tag than #87, lol!)

Depending on what I have going on Sunday, I might come down for that day also, but we'll see how bad I can throw on Saturday.  ;D

Something I just noticed on the Mokena Flyer: Prizes for top Am Masters playing in Am Intermediate.

Seems that even though there isn't an Am Master division anymore Gary is trying to take care of the Masters playing with us youngsters.

Sunday tag rounds at Mokena anyone?

I do believe you are correct Drathe.  Gary is taking care of those that are over 40 (that are at the Intermediate level), but have to play with the kiddies to compete in a sanctioned event.

I've just uploaded the list of pre-registered entries:

The Flyer for the IL State DGC at Mokena next weekend has "Top 1/3 will receive trophies, discs, or prizes". I thought AM payouts were top 1/2 per tour standards.

the pdga has suggested payouts but i've found that alot of TD's do whatever makes sense to them.

And that is really the way it should be.  We were offering trophy-only years before it was allowed.  Gary was paying 1/3rd long before the PDGA came out with flatter, deeper, lamer standards.  Either way, if a TD is up front about what they are doing, it should not be an issue.

Results for the 26th Illinois State Championship tournament: Int/Rec/Jr are posted. I had a good time. I shot the best round of my life (6 down from the reds) (I lead after the first round!  ;D) and my normal round from the whites (10 over  :o :P) and I still got 9th!  ;D My dad smoked alot of people and got tied for 4th in Int. 103 players for the day!

Good luck tomorrow for those that are playing!  :)

WOW!  The boy's fast ... I just posted the scores.

As to "smoking alot of people" ... I've always viewed playing golf as playing against the course ... if perchance I shoot better than someone, then I beat the course better ... If someone shoots better than me ... they beat the course better.  It's never been "me vs. the other guy".

Just my 0.02.   I'll be back out on Sunday, hopefully to show the course that I can still beat it.

To all that will be there Sunday ... Throw Well!

Hopefully the turnout convinces Gary that sanctioning Int/Rec is the way to go... would've been there myself today except I had a music gig til past 1 am and I'm committed to never playing a tournament again on that schedule...   :-\  I'll be limping out there tomorrow though

I was First Loser in Adv Master.  Elliot was smoking hot in the morning round, shooting -8 to my -1, so that kind of decided it right there.  Jim Bassett, Wilbur Wallis, Steve Olsen, myself and Brad hmmmm were all very close all day long.  For me it was "Death by Par."  In the afternoon I had a stretch of 15 pars in a row on 14 birdiable holes on the way to shooting a par round.

Sounds like me on saturday.  Crappy drive, missed jump putt, drop in 3.  That was pretty much my last 12 or 13 holes.

Unnofficial Results are up for Illinois State Pro/Advanced day.
Big turnout - 135 players.

Bruce you might have been first loser, but I ended up DFL   ;D  I don't think I'll do back-to-back tournaments again, well not at Mokena at least.

Here's the link ... http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5939

Throw well ...

Fixed Matt Hall's PDGA # .... I saw the two and didn't know which to take.

Unofficial ratings are much higher than I thought they would be.  I thought I played 890-915 but they are saying more like 920-940.  It felt like I missed a lot of birdie opportunities.  Baskets were just sitting there on most of the holes!    ;D

unofficial ratings are within 5 points of what i predicted they would be after the round.  my rating predicting skills are getting finely honed at this point.  if anybody wants to know their rating immediately, i am your man!   :)  i do charge a fee of 25 cents per rating though.

Next time, I'll bet you 25 cents!  I've been off ever since they put in the juice and then took it away and then lifted up the bottom end of the slope a little.

It does not look like the TD report for IL States made the deadline for ratings.  One of my better tournies this summer :(.

That's annoying. What good are ratings when it takes 6 months to get them?

I would agree. To keep ratings updated TD's need to get their reports in. I was impressed with the Prairie Open. They got the TD report in immediately & it will be included in the next update. IL States  is the only event of 14 i've played this year that is not on time.

I pretty much just shot my rating, but I would have liked to see it included.  I suspect Gary thought the TD report was done because the scores were posted.  Maybe he thought he delegated the TD report when he delegated the score posting.  He is a disc golf demi-god but he is not very sophisticated about all the PDGA stuff or the computer stuff.

Channahon, you mean? I was down there last weekend.  Recent storms produced an interesting number of water hazards, so if it rains any more before Saturday you might consider hip waders. But only one green is underwater so if you make decent shots elsewhere the water isn't really a problem.
Title: Re: Joliet Disc Golf Tournaments for '06
Post by: tacimala on September 20, 2006, 11:40:23 AM
If it is produced by rain isn't it not a hazard but only casual water?
Title: Re: Joliet Disc Golf Tournaments for '06
Post by: pickax on September 20, 2006, 11:42:36 AM
It's whatever the TD says it is. In this case, it would probably be casusal water.

about 6-10 in of water surrounds #6 basket for about 15 ft on all sides. If you miss the putt you'll be OB .  8)

(it's only a hazard if you get wet....)

#14 looks and feels different with a small brick wall to the right of the basket, with maybe the ground built up, maybe some brush cut away, but it'd been 2 yrs since I'd been down there; looks great, but I think the basket is the same place it's always been.

Yah, they're eventually gonna move the pin there, but I guess they want the grass to grow in before that & the deer have been eating it & therfore pushing the pin-placement date back    :-\

Just rumors I've heard out there, I'd have to talk to Frank "World Champ" Grimes to know the real skinny.

Put up 8 foot string fences around it with bells on the corners to keep the deer out!

They are going to be putting a temp basket on the wall for 14 and play that 1 round, and the old basket for the other round.  They are also adding additional temp holes (6?) for Sunday only.

As of last night, there were no puddles around any of the baskets, the ground was just a little soft.

Brett, do you know if Gary or someone else has sent in the scores recently? It is somewhat frustrating to have a tourney that was played that long ago not included in this ratings.

Scores have been uploaded. TD has not been reported. It will be completed but it will not be included until the next ratings update. I feel your frustration. It was one of my better tournaments this year.

Post by: adoni on September 23, 2006, 06:48:41 PM
Scores have been uploaded.  They are not official.  It was a good tourout in spite of the weather - 46 players.

Congratulations to all !

The course is playing really nice, the 6 additional holes are quite challenging.  I didn't play them yet, only walked them.

Distances ranged from 208' (+/-) to 430'.

Also --- thank you Chris for getting my disc and driving to Joliet to return it and NOT even play in the tourney!   :)

had other golf family obligations

i would have weathered the weather playing disc
as there were only 4 major downpours as predicted

but waters edge turned into water everywhere
and my old man went in and got us rain checks ( we were the only people to quit )

Thanks Brett for my tag.   :D

Thanks for getting the scores up so quickly.  It turned out to be a great day.  Frank and his crew have done a great job to make that course a great experience.

No sweat. I learned my lesson earlier in the year on rain tourneys & how much I hate playing them. Besides, it gave me an excuse to go to Louis Restaurant in Joliet. They'll actually deep-fry bacon.  :love10:

Because of my back I was not able to play but Maddisen and I were out there taking pictures and video. Frank has done so much for an already great course. That was really nice to see. I haven't been to a Gary event in a while...they seem to always be when I'm doing something that weekend to prep for the next IOS or to do the TD report from the previous event. I was reminded again how smooth his events are. For all you youngsters out there, if you find yourself being a TD someday, running a smooth tournament is a good goal.

Becky had fun shooting with the old guys and said it was "like playing with women but without the hugs."  ;D

I'll put them up in the Discontinuum gallery when I have a chance. It won't be until sometime after USWDGC. I'm taking classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays right now plus going to USWDGC to take pictures and getting ready for IOS #7 so I'm tight on time. I'll post here once I get them in the gallery.

In the gallery under 2006 events. The Channahon album. I put in about 120 or photos. My suggestion before you view each photo individually is to setup a 1 second per frame slide show and watch them that way. There are some nice sequence shots that look good in the slide show. Hope you like 'em.
