So far my top 3 are (in order)

Rockford (Anna Page - East)
UW-Parkside
Lombard (Madison Meadows)

I haven't played Anna Page - West, Mokena, or Aurora yet, but I've heard very very good things about all 3.

Not only is Mundelein my favorite course it has my favorite hole.............................number 3 is a very tough hole. Course gets rough in the summer lots of bushes and trees, i usually end up with a plus score.

I feel u Bryan, any course can be awesome with like 2 million trees like Hudson Mills Mitch.  It takes a great course to be good with only 11 trees.

You guys are all are bunch of douche's.  Fountain Hills in Fountain Hills, AZ is defiantly the best.  Even though when i played i wasnt at the top of my game it was still the best course that i have played.  That is until i play highbridge, sounds so sweet!

Do yourselves a favor and take a trip to Cincinnati, OH  and Charlotte, NC.  The courses in those cities are like Tower Ridge on crack.  There are a few courses that are 10,000+ ft. and you don't have to deal with ball golfers or too many chuckers.

I haven't played a ton of courses, so, take this in mind when you read my favorites.

I have played most of the courses in the Des Moines area. I grew up there and go back to visit quite often. If there was one reason to move back there it would be for the disc golf. My favorite there is Ewing Park. I love the combination of trees and long holes it offers. Plus, my parents live 5 minutes from the course. Pushing a close second in Grandview Park in Des Moines. It is just set up so nice. It makes me feel like I'm actually golfing. Especially with 2 concrete tees for each hole. It's reasonably wooded and has great elevation change. Plus, they have nice benches at each hole. Really feels like golf. My least favorite from Des Moines would probably be Waterworks. It's flat and mostly open. It's not a bad course though by any means. It's pretty much the equivelent to Lombard here with slightly more distance on each hole. Still very fun, just really really flat. It's built on a flood plain and I guess it's a great way to give life to an otherwise unused area. I've also played Kansas City's Swope Park. It was a few years ago, but, the elevation changes were crazy and through some good trees. It was a neat course. Compared to what I've played around here, Illinois (NW Suburbs) is really lacking in quality. It's building though and that is positive. That's where I've played. I really have to get to Michigan one of these days.

In my limited course experience I'd have to say Highbridge Hills. Multiple courses and a great layout which should be even better now as I was there before the tees were poured. Can't wait to go back again this year.

I'm voting Boyne Mountain.  It has a hotel, two restaurants, a ski lift to take you waaaaaaay up to hole 1, a beer vendor waaaaay up at hole 1 if you forgot your beer, and 18 great holes.  Weekdays they will drive you up to hole 1.  I can't remember what the greens fees were, but they were reasonable.

I almost died on that trip too!   :D

Bijou Park - Lake Tahoe, CA or NV???

Bijou sits in the hills - lots of cool shots and great scenary in the distance.   27 holes that sit amongst pine tress and dusty ground.  manzanitas litter the course, but they are worth navigating through to play a course that even would be a 970 rated round or so.  i spent three days out there and played every morning.  each time i met some nice locals and played with them.  i really enjoyed the whole scene - night life, great outdoor recreation, and real friendly people - a very pleasent place to be.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Canyon in FL.  By far one ofthe best courses ever designed.  It exists in an old limestone quarry which is about 50 years overgrown, so there are plenty of trees, schule and a ton of elevation (yes, FL)!

Until I played the River City Rumble in Davenport, IA, I felt the Canyon was the best.  Boy has my mind changed.  Davenport is a temp course so it is only available once a

year.  Don't miss out on next year's.  This course has everything, and then some!  I was 39 over par for two rounds and took 6th in Advanced!!!  Numerous routes, LONG uphills and even longer downhills with water in play on quite a few holes.  This is EPIC golf!  If you're not ready to get knocked down on the dirt numerous times and get back up a few , DON'T COME.  I would say thios course is WELL beyond the abilities of the average Int. player.  Virtuall Pro/Adv. only.

I will be signed up for next year's as soon as reg. is open.  Don't miss out.  Besides it's so close, how could you?

Don't forget to stop by Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown, KY on your way to or from BG.  The course designers must be doctorates, it is so beautiful.

My list is at 70 different courses played right now, so I've had my fair share of experience!

Kep playing and never stop trying to find those jems!

Very difficult to limit to just one. Sadly my favorite course is no longer in existence. That would be the Boylan Family Farms course in Laurel Springs, NC. The property is no longer owned by the Boylans so it's no longer a course just a Christmas tree farm.

My top ten:

Codorus State Park, Hanover PA- Has 54 holes (very tough and scenic) and a 9 hole mini disc golf course
Killens Pond St Pk, Felton DE
Warwick Town Park Warwick, NY - two permanent tees two permanent baskets on every hole
Little Lehigh Parkway Allentown, PA - Site of 2005 pro worlds semis and finals
Rockburn Branch Park, Ellicot City MD
     Woodshed/Whipping Post, Paw Paw, WV
Highbridge Hills Sports Complex, Highbridge WI
     Druid Hill  Baltimore, MD
     Lake Nockamixon Quakertown, PA
Beaver Creek Mini disc golf course, Strasburg PA -32 holes of mini disc golf with stainless steel mini baskets, multiple teepads overlooking beautiful farmland. Great fun challenging and scenic course with major elevation changes.

I'd say my fave in driving distance would be Rogers Lakewood in Valparaiso, IN. Elevation, water hazard, unique holes. This one is really cool.

More than a 1 day trip would have to be the Peoria, IL courses. McNaughton, Northwoods, & Bradley. Haven't played Washington or Canton yet though...

Multiple day trip would HAVE to be Highbridge, WI. (as I said in my earlier post) I have family 1 hour away in Hayward so I go every year.  >:D

Hickory Hills in Traverse City is pretty good too.  Last time I was there it was still a little rough.  Kelsey and I played it last weekend.  Now, in addition to a great variety of up and down holes, it also has mostly concrete tees and most tees also have a bench.  The payoff hole is awesome.  There is a lot of hill climbing on this course.  Bring your legs.

Take a long weekend and play Kensington Longs, Cass Benton Longs, and Stoney Creek Longs as well.  Do it in September just before Am Nationals and you can also play the Tobbogan.

That'll break your arm for sure.

Did you play Rolling from the longs?  I've only played shorts.  It looks brutal from the longs.  We have seven courses here as good as McNaughton, better than Northwoods.  Brett has played all of them except Rolling, which was not 18 when he was here.

renny park and the hornets nest in charlotte are now my two absolute favorite courses.  hornets nest has it all from the wood shots to the open shots, short and long, etc... i never thought that a disc golf park should need several thousands thrown at it to make it cool but seeing two or more baskets, multiple tee pads, and meticulously groomed fairways on every hole made this course an instant favorite, but once i played renny park that changed.  this park is by far the coolest park ever.  if you've played video games like 'hot shots golf' or 'golden tee' this is what the real life disc golf version of those would be like.  check these links out and it'll give you a bigger picture - check out the virtual tour too.  its a trip to watch - just click on the hole number and it will show you some video of each hole...

http://www.charlottedgc.com/hornetsnest.asp

http://www.charlottedgc.com/renaissance.asp

us airways has large hubs in chicago and in charlotte so finding a flight anytime for cheap shouldnt be a problem.  spend the money and go.  you will not be disappointed with them.  if by chance it doesnt excite you, the beaches and mountains are just hours away.  the following link features some pics from asheville, nc and the great smokey mountains.  i helped a buddy of mine move halfway across the country.  we got all his stuff moved in his new apt in one night and spent the remainder of the time enjoying the country side...

In the middle of June, there were four separate, consecutive, one-day, C-tier tournaments in the Charlotte area.  Friday was Hornet's Nest and Saturday was Renaissance.  I considered going, but chose Geneseo instead.  Knowing now that those courses are superior, maybe next year!  Mark your calendars!

started my 2 week vacation today, i may make the trip to kensington, cass, etc...

i played rolling 6 or 7 times... for the most part we decided on each hole which tee to use. but we did play one round of dubs on all the longs. it wasnt insanely tough or anything, but definately a great course.

MI is where its at... from my experience, MI has an excellent park system...
maybe its just a more outdoor oriented state...

I'm surprised you thought Blueberry Hill was that tough. I played Blueberry Hill at Mid Nationals last year and while it wasn't pitch and putt I didn't consider it hard. Shot a 54 that should've been a 51 and that was with all the pin placements in the long layout. Highbridge Gold was much tougher no one that week shot in the 50's.

In my previous post I listed 9 disc golf courses based on my favorites (not difficulty) and 7 out of the 9 were harder than BH. In my region we have 7 courses with SSA's above 60. (Woodshed, Whipping Post, Seneca Longs, Patapsco Long, Warwick Longs, Tyler Longs, Nockamixon) I believe BH's SSA is around 53.

Different regions different benchmarks for difficulty.

In the past 5-10 years our region (mid-atlantic) has been introducing more courses that feature pro par 4's even an occassional par 5 here and there in addition to the par 3 stuff. I think it's a good move because it helps players be more disciplined in course management and develops the approach game since often it takes two good shots to reach the green.

Course records on some of our harder courses:

       Nockamixon:
             - 58  Barry Shultz 2005 World Championships

       Warwick:
              - 56 Brian Scweberger 2002 NY States
-56 Nate Doss 2006 Skylands NT

        Woodshed
                -56 Tyler Horne 2004 WVO

I believe these course records while over the usually 54 par are rated in the 1040-1075 range

Knob Hill (longs) and Morraine State Pk (longs) in the Pittsburgh area also have SSAs over 60

I was just trying to think of the name of Addison Oaks the other day while talking to Bruce. I consider Addison Oaks the first "real" disc course that Bruce and I played. We played it around 1990 but before that all the courses we had played were designed with frisbees in mind (such as the original Adler course where we first started playing pre-designed courses in 1978).

Addison Oaks is the best old school disc course that I have played. The "Oaks" course at the 2004 Worlds in Des Moines is probably the best new school course that I have played.

I don't think the Monster in Ann Arbor is that good of a course.  There are a lot of righty hyzer shots that cannot be reached with a lefty anhyzer.  Every lefty hyzer can be reached with a righty anhyzer.  So it is horribly unbalanced.  The championship baskets are mostly stupid.  It is a high scoring course but it is not well designed.

I would have to agree while I haven't played many of the courses listed here I played Adison oaks in 1995 after being eliminated from the match play event in detriot. 7 Oaks in nashville was great for the samereason I like redan in atlanta multiple pin placements that can take a course from easy to near impossible while still being fair and haveing good flow . I hate courses that have made unreasonable holes or holes that are long for the sake of being long . Courses should have character good flow and either multiple pin placemetns or tees . I was really supprised to see what has been done with the pitch and puttt course in waukeegan after haveing been in the group of people to present the idea and do a demo .

Until I played the River City Rumble in Davenport, IA, I felt the Canyon was the best.  Boy has my mind changed.  Davenport is a temp course so it is only available once a year.

My list is at 70 different courses played right now, so I've had my fair share of experience!

Tafe, and anyone else wanting to play the best course around (if not anywhere):

West Lake has the approval to be permanent.  After so many letters of gratitude were written after the Rumble this year, they have agreed to let us put the course in permanently (with the possibility of adding two other courses out there eventually, the land IS seemingly endless).  The course will probably be temporary still for this year's Rumble (which is an A tier, on Mother's Day...mark your calenders), but will be permanent shortly after.

Hope you, and all others, are able to come up for the tournament...and get hooked on the course.  It'll eat you alive...and you'll love it!

Nice. I shot a 3 under there and felt I had finally accomplished something in my life. Is that a 1000+ rated round?

I actually got to play the new North(or Steady Ed) course at Wildwood park in Augusta on thursday. Only played six of the first nine holes and a few more as I explored the back nine before it got dark, and I have to say that was plenty even when you consider how much more work needs to be done as far as clean up goes. The layout is remarkable, the terrain is demanding, and the views can be dramatic. Many of the holes require very accurate drives of the tee because the course is full of 60-80 foot pines. And there are par 4's and maybe par 5's that test your patience when some of the already long and tight holes are on the long placements. Hands down, my new personal favorite followed by the Tobbagen course in Milford, Michigan; McNaughten in Peoria; Tower Ridge in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and finally the 18 hole course in Waterbury, Vermont which is a few miles down the road from the Ben and Jerry's ice cream plant in the foot hills of the Green Mountains. Awesome views. THE best summertime course ever!

Had the chance in October to play Morley Field Disc Golf Course in San Diego's Balboa Park. There were a few wooded holes that were challenging as well as pin placements beside and underneath the trees.

What I found most interesting and why I consider it a great course is that they have approximately 5 or 6 different basket placements for each hole, which changes every week.

The best I have played in IL:
McNaughton - Pekin
Northwood - Morton

Seeing Riverbends on that list is so weird.  I don't think of it as one of the Top 5 in Michigan.  It is not even one of my Top 5 in the Detroit area.  It must have been a beautiful day for you.  Any course is nice on a beautiful day.

I was actually going to suggest, from my own experience, that winning an ace pool there or winning a tournament there might have something to do with it.  I have a fondness for Coldbrook in spite of it being a crappy little course with pinball routes to the basket, holes dangerously close, a crossing fairway or two, and a righty route on every hole.  But I won a Super Tour ace pool there and a B-tier in advanced, so the course is o.k.   ::)

See, my one tourney ace was at Timber Ridge in Kalamazoo. The course is awesome, but they are pulling it until worlds in '08. I hold the one and only ace on the course so that is something I am excited about. The course is in my top 5, but was quickly there after about 8 or 9 holes.

Well, I haven't been playing long, but I try to sample as many courses as I can.  My hands down favorite is Idlewild in the Cincinnati area.  For me, this course has everything -- narrow fairways in the woods, broad open shots, elevation ...  But what really makes it special is the attention paid to individual holes by various groups.  Each is unique in its own way, with custom benches, retention walls, flower pots, PDGA walk-of-fame ... very cool.

Honorable mentions in no particular order:
Mount Airy -- Cincinnati
McNaughton -- Peoria
Hiestand -- Madison
Granite Ridge -- Highbridge
Woodland Greens -- Highbridge (tree gnomes!)
Maytag Park -- Newton, IA

Most overrated course that I see mentioned alot:
Sinnissippi -- Sterling (I like the front 9, but the back is just ordinary)

Worst 18+ holers:
Gillette, WY
Modesto, CA

Only two aces to date, #1 at Streamwood and #16, long at Jericho Lake.  Yeah, I like both those courses, but neither makes my 'A' list!

One of the most underrated is Lake Eureka. I've played at least 45 courses in Illinois & 10 in Wisconsin, and this one rarely gets talked about. It's worth a stop if you ever head down toward the Peoria area.

AMEN, brotha!!!  This course is wonderful, and a MUST play if in the area.  Every hole leaves you thinkin':  dang, that was fun...I'd like to throw it again.  We did a Peoria "tour" last summer and hit up all the courses down there in a day trip...and that course stays in my memory even more than McNaughton, and I love McNaughton!

Yes, quite a bit of redesign. 2 of the open holes in the northeast corner of the park were removed for 2 better holes in the southwest corner. I agree this is a very nice course with lots of elevation and trees. It now has cement tees too. Add some long tees and this place is sweet!

Were those the two holes that played across the small creek with the trees & shrubs? If so, that's great that they took those out, they were the 2 most boring ones when I played.

I haven't played that many courses, but over the winter I was in Northern California.  There's a course in Novato (about one hour south of Santa Rosa and 1-2 north of San Fran) that is amazing.

You do have to pay $5  per day as a park fee but it's well worth it.  The park is around a lake and the course it set on the side of a hill.  The setting is unbelievable.  I didn't hear a single car the whole time I was out there.  You really feel like you're out in nature.  A couple of deer wandered through the course as we played.

Lots of elevation change, and lots of trees, but a good mix of holes and shots required.  There are Am and Pro tees, and 3-4 pin placements on every hole.  Also a 1000+ foot flat hole if you're into that kinda thing (the only 7 I've ever shot that didn't make me want to quit the sport on the spot).

Highly recommended if you happen to be nearby.  At least 2 hours to play 18 as it is very spread out and worth taking your time on.

3)  Oak Brook Course (IL)
4)  Prarie Park (DeKalb)
5)  Commons (Lombard)

i know it's short, but definately gonna play Jericho, Lippold and as many others in DuPage/Kane/Cook as I can this summer...and i want to head down to Peoria some too

Thanks for the kind words, Brett. We've got more courses on the way, also, so you'll have to make another trip down to see us. For the record, I've got two other courses (both completely different than the existing course) designed at West Lake. I have already proposed an additional course at West LAke when I proposed the original course. The county is "seeing how the first one works" before investing in additional baskets. But based on the response from the tournament (and if enough people write them letters about their awesome park), it is a very good possibility.

Thanks again for coming down, Brett. Next year, we'll see you in the top 4!

WR Jackson Memorial Course at the IDGC!  WOW.  For the layout that we played for the HOF Classic par was 69.  Lots of par 5's.  There are shorter holes along/near a creek that can easily be a 2 or 5.  And hole 18! Talk about a great finishing hole (par5)

The Steady Ed Course is pretty awesome and the layout for that was par 65.  Has some great water holes (Hole 5 and 13 come to mind).  I think DGTV.com has some clips of people driving on hole 5.

The first 6 holes at the Jackson course are par 4's.  It was still a little rough in April, but will only get better as time goes on.

I HIGHLY suggest everyone make it to the IDGC.  Ive made 3 trips since January and each time it just keeps getting better and better.  (Everyone needs to thank Matt Gillis if you get the chance)

The Clubhouse with the museum and pro shop is great too...

Tons of great camping all around the park too.

mokena is a decent course.  no matter how u design it there isn't going to be much elevation change out there though, so it had no chance to be a top course in my opinion.

The TOP 12 Illinois Courses at this time: (ranked by my desire to play them on any given day)

1.  Centralia (i'm giving it #1 status without having played it)
2.  McNaughton Park in Pekin
3.  Morton
4.  Sinnissippi Park in Sterling
5.  Wildcat Springs in Hamilton
6.  Rockford Old
7.  Milan
8.  Lincoln Park in Springfield
9.  Longview Park in Rock Island
10. Macomb (Everwood)
11. Rockford New
12. Tie between Geneseo and Galesburg

Honorable Mention to Prospect Park in Moline, IL which is the only course besides Centralia that I have not played yet and I believe would make this list otherwise.

NOTE:  Courses you have to pay to play are not included since I can't afford to play them every day.

prospect park is pretty fun to play, it has some decent elevation.  most of the holes are medium length I would guess, not a lot of bomb holes.  one hole (15?) you tee off and there is a hill that is literally the end of your teepad and it goes up about 25 feet so unless you throw it pretty high it's a tomohawk/thumber hole which I think is pretty interesting.  It is in a beautiful park which is well used by the community.

I think that it is easier to design a great course if you have elevation changes but it is not required. You need a variety of lengths of holes, variety of shots required, and true risk vs. reward shots (there's probably only a handful of holes that offer some true risk vs. reward shots in Illinois currently).

I think if you have elevation it is much easier to design a crappy course that will masquerade as a great course.  It is easy to hide weak design skills behind excellent terrain.  Case in point:  Are there any lefty holes at McNaughton?  I'm having trouble remembering where the lefty hole is.  No wonder Scott Martin got so good cutting his skills there.

I know I haven't played as many out-of-state courses as Jack or even Jon, but I'd have to agree with Jon. The courses here in IL are not that great. Just cross the border to Kenosha or go to Cedar Lake. There's nothing even close to those in the Chicagoland area.

I think if you have elevation it is much easier to design a crappy course that will masquerade as a great course.  It is easy to hide weak design skills behind excellent terrain.  Case in point:  Are there any lefty holes at McNaughton?  I'm having trouble remembering where the lefty hole is.  No wonder Scott Martin got so good cutting his skills there.

hole 2, hole 3, hole 8, hole 9, hole 10, hole 12, hole 13, hole 15, hole 16

Mokena could have been one of the best 18 hole courses in the country.

Mokena is what it is. The white tees get a ton of recreational play, and the blue tees challenge Open-caliber golfers. If you really believe Mokena could have been one of the best 18 hole courses in the country, you need to get out and play more courses.

Quote from: Jon Brakel on June 28, 2007, 07:23:04 AMInstead it's an above average course in a below average state.

I am so glad you are no longer the state coodinator.

If having tons of recreational players on a course makes it a good course we have some of the countries top courses right here in lake county.

Illinois is inferior to courses in the surrounding states of Michigan, Wisconsin, & Iowa. I stated this in my information submitted when running for state coordinator. I've played 80+ of the 100+ courses in IL.

Yes, Mokena has short & long tees and is well maincured. I think it's a good course but not great. It's by far the best course in the Chicago area.  I agree with Jon that it could have been a really fantastic 18 hole course however it's a solid 27 hole course. Avery Jenkins mentioned during the 2nd round how awesome of an 18 hole course there could have been. We need to move away from this par 3 mentality.

Last year at the Illinois State Championships 23 of the 29 open players shot par or better. That is not challenging in my opinion.

I have no idea what that statement has to do with Mokena. Is that your way of saying that you don't think Mokena is an above average course or that you don't think that Illinois has below average courses? You should ask your current state coordinator what he thinks of Mokena. I did (he posted while I was typing, so now you know).

It is obvious that a lot of people have done a lot of work on that course and this discussion should not take away from that. I just think it could have been a much better 18 hole course than the 27 hole course that it is. The biggest problem is that there is one hole that you play out there 20 times and there's one very interesting hole and 6 good holes. If all the courses in Illinois were as good as Mokena, McNaughton, etc. and we had a few more of them, then we'd have one of the best states for disc golf.

All over the US we have a shortage of designs that incorporate good par 4 and 5 holes in their design (and I don't include Edgebrook in the good par 4 category because it only adds length--rather than additional challenges) and a shortage of risk vs. reward holes. I would say that most people designing disc golf courses today don't understand risk vs. reward shots/holes and because there aren't very many out there to play most players don't understand them either. Case in point: When we setup the yellow rope at Fairfield you will see some players trying to park the basket at the narrowest part of the "island" and keep skipping OB. They don't have the control for that shot but they don't do the math to realize that they should play 30 feet short and take the 3. Similar to going for the 30 foot putt that is back stopped by YR OB and you only make 30% of your 30 footers. When are the course designs going to grow up and match the level of the players and discs?

I know there are better courses than the ones in the suburbs. It bothers me when people don't appreciate the courses they are fortunate enough to be able to play. It really bothers me when people who did nothing to help on a course trash it on-line. That's when I need to remind myself it must suck to be them and it's awesome to be me. Haha! Ok, here's why I'll never complain about the courses in this area:

1. I respect the golfers who came before me, installed these courses, worked to keep them in the ground, and continue to care for them today. That's not to leave out the new players who also work hard. The Fox Valley guys (and others) come to mind.
2. I remember when there were only a few courses to play. We played them until we were bored, then we made up new tees and threw diferent shots. Now there are many courses to choose from, and it's a great thing.
3. The courses aren't "too easy." I'm sorry, but unless you have a 1000 rating, you're doing more dying than deuceing. Shoot -18 and then come talk to me.

Ok, I've wasted enough time on this lame board today. Time to go golfing!!!

Jack,

I think you don't truly understand the difference between hard, easy and challenging. You can have a risk vs. reward hole that is easy to make par for an average golfer. You can have a boring, one path hole that is difficult to make par. The difference is that a challenging course is more fun for people who like a challenge.

Your logic on being able to critique a course is not widely held, fortunately. And to call this forum "lame" when you did nothing to provide and maintain it breaks your very rule. However, I support your right to call our forum "lame". I also support your right to critique disc golf courses, discs, tournaments, TV shows and movies that you had nothing to do with making.

Have fun disc golfing...that's what it's all about!

Ummm, I helped out at Mokena a few days and the park district gave me a shirt during the grand opening, so I guess I get to trash Mokena online!!!

Anyway, I think what we're all trying to say is that it would be great to have more Mokena or better courses in our area! After playing Highbridge & Telemark last week, playing locally is MUCH different.

Jack, I know you've been to other states surrounding Illinois playing disc golf. What is your opinion of our courses (greater Chicagoland, not all of IL) vs. theirs?

That's another point. Why should a good score in disc golf only be a 2? Telemark & Highbridge both have plenty of holes where I was happy to get a 4, 5, or even 6. Putting up a decent score on a hard course is much more rewarding than on a deuce-or-die course. I'm a big fan of any hole that requires accuracy & shot placement, not just a throw for the pin.

yea i think that jack is right though because i mean we all would like harder courses but i mean everyone including myself who puts them in does the best they can with the space and resources availble. Yea hopefully we can build some really tough ones in the chicago area someday but for now im happy with how fast its growing.

We still need to be able to critique each other's work. It is one tool to use in order to improve. Don't forget that I did call this an above average course. It also has one of the best single holes of disc golf in Illinois. I've been playing disc golf in Illinois since before there were courses in Illinois and I've been playing courses in Illinois since 1978. Disc golf has been growing very quickly the entire time. It's all relative. Don't let the growth of the sport be an excuse to "just get baskets in the ground". And Mokena is way more than just baskets in the ground, but in my opinion it could have been more than it is...it still could be more than it is.

These days I'd say my top five are Idlewild, Renny, Goliath, Toboggan and Flip City.  I like elevation and isolation in a course, and some par 4 holes.

And there is a tournament this summer at Flip City if anyone wants to make plans to play it.  August 14 and 15, split-weekend B-tier.  Flip City is actually closer to most of you than it is to most of me.  They are using the IOS unzipped divisional breaks for the two days, so lots of players can play both days.  I'll probably be there with the family, if we have all recovered from Worlds!   ;D

If you're serious, and want to make a family trip out of it, check out Claybanks Township Park and Campground.  It is on Lake Michigan with it's own beach and has hook ups and a decent bath house.  It is maybe 15 minutes from Flip City?  Not too many people know about it, so I might have to delete this post in 24 hours!   ;D

Also, not too many people know about the really nice new course near me, and we're no longer telling anyone about it either!   ;D  ;D  ;D

It has been and is still #1 in my list. Highbridge Hills, WI

I have a hard time saying which course I like the most but Blueberry Hill, Granite Ridge, and Gold are all awesome. Between the 3 + Woodland Greens this place is spectacular. I'm interested to see what The Bear is going to look like.  Add on to the fact that you can play a layout like Granberry and BlueRidge, WOW!

If you have not been here you are missing out. You need at least 3 full days of play to experience this place.

wow, nice topic ya'll. after alot of thought, and trying to remember them all in the early 90's, I came up with this.

1. Hickory Hills, Waterloo Iowa
2. Earl W. Brewer, Grand Rapids Michigan(97 Worlds)
3. Mt.Airy Forrest, Cincinnati Ohio(95 Worlds)
4. McNaughton, Pekin Illinois(home course)
5. France Park, Logansport Indiana

I find it very sad that so few people in the Illiana area seem to have made it down to play in Cincinatti.  While I have not played highbridge I have been able to play some great courses in Pennsylvania, West Virgina, California, Wisconsin, Illinois and the Carolinas.  While 2012 worlds is going to be awesome when it comes down here to Charlotte NC I have never played a course with the combination of aesthetic and technical appeal that Idlewild has.  I hope to make it to Flip City and to Highbridge in the future but for the moment my top five courses would be something like this.

1. Idlewild (Cincinatti area)

2. Moraine State Park (Pittsburgh area)

3. The Whipping Post (Paw Paw, WV)

4. Renaissance Gold (Charlotte, NC)

5. Winthrop Gold with the ropes...ridiculously punishing (Winthrop, SC USDGC)

Honorable Mention goes to a private course near Charlotte, Bracketts Bluff which will sadly not be in the rotation for Worlds 2012 to the detriment of all attendees.

Also, I have made it to Golden Gate State Park, DeLaveaga and Stafford Lake in Northern California and don't believe any of them merit a top five ranking.  This is in a large part due to the condition of the courses in spring/summer/fall when the ground is completely barren with no grass/vegetation.  Frankly, I just don't find dry and dusty courses, despite their difficulty, to have all of the qualities to merit a true top rating.  IMHO

In conclusion, if you can, come down to Charlotte in 2012 for Worlds and you will not be disappointed.

But courses that are under snow for three months out of the year are no problem?  When I played Stafford, it was in the early spring and it was green and beautiful.  While it probably wouldn't have been as great of an experience if I had played it while it was dry and barren, that wouldn't have that big of an impact on how I viewed the course as a whole.

Agreed!  Maybe expectations are different between a Chicago area resident and someone who lives in warmer climates all year?  Winter disc golf in 2+ feet of snow certainly has an impact on my appreciation of disc golf courses.

2. Des Moines (Loaded with good courses) Walnut Ridge & Ewing. Did not get to play ISU & Pickard which the pros played for Worlds.
3. Winthrop Ropes Course in Rock Hills, SC
4. Toboggan- Milford, MI
5. Peoria area courses (McNaughton, Morton, Bradley)

The baskets are in at the Toboggan!  Kelsey shot a 63 out there tonight which was 963 rated last year.  We are going to play it about six more times from now to Am Nats.  Hope some of you good advanced players will come out this year.

Glad this topic was revived.  I've played quite a few more courses since I settled on this list.  I'm not sure yet how my top 5 would shake out, but Maple Hill in Leicester, MA is my new #1.  It had everything that I like:  elevation, more wooded than not, some water, multi-shot holes, nice tees and signs.  Probably the one area where it stands above the other courses that I've played is having 4 distinct layouts for different skill levels that are very clealy marked.  I played the white course, which was a perfect challenge for my skill level.  Blue and Gold will challenge the more skilled players, and red is short and has no water carries.  There is a proshop on site.  The only downside was the $10 per day fee.  Very worthwhile, if you plan to spend the whole day there.  Sadly, I was just passing through and could only play one round.

I would recomend Maple Hill to anyone passing through New England, regardless of skill level.

Centralia sounded like it would be too challenging and not enough fun for the two of us without a guide.  We played Effingham instead.  Effingham was fun, a lot like Sinissippi.  We played long tees except when we walked up to the short and did not feel like searching for or hiking back to the long!

Brett, if you want to do a West Michigan trip this summer, Diana and I have a free place to stay near Saugatuck a short walk from the big lake .  The Saug course is Michigan-good and the Holland course is Illinois-good.  Two hours up north you have Flip and the Ludington courses which are Michigan-double-plus-good.  The house has four beds and lots of room for air mattresses, so you could bring the wife or a disc golfing friend.

Recently played Trophy Lakes just outside of Charleston, SC.
$5 pay to play all day.
Terrific example of p-to-p!
18 holes, 3 sets of tees, 2 mandos, 3 initial drives over water, and several baskets-on-the-edge of something.
Even a double basket!
Highly recommended. Easily in my top 10.
