Uh, asking people to keep their own score is only asking for trouble no matter how honest you believe the person to be.
I don't think that flipping through cards to write down a score is that big of a deal, either.
Between Jim, Brett, Jon, Chud and the two poles that Shawn can get I think we'd good on baskets. If we need a 7th my M14 is always in my trunk...
I think the rule that Jon's talking about is relating to players keeping their own score versus rotating the cards around in the group.
I can help with registration and scorekeeping, as well as other misc duties assigned the day of.
I can also bring my M14 if we want another practice basket. Hell, its always in my trunk so lets just say it will be there regardless.
What happened to Chud's basket? At one point I had counted 6 before myk or I volunteered baskets....
So does the liquor store on the corner of Green Bay and YorkHouse, as well as Jewel on the corner of Lewis (39th Ave, for all you Northerners...) and YorkHouse.
Yeah, I was planning on picking some up at Home Depot, unless someone can suggest elsewhere (in the two days remaining until the event...)
Yeah, nev' mind. I found 100 flags for $8 at HD. Should I pick up some new orange tape for the hole poles also, or do you have that Brett?
k. where did you find the orange tape? HD?
Scorecards are printed & cut. Man, I love working at a place that has good office supplies... you shoulda seen this paper cutter I got to use! :-)
Website is updated on the HPC Memorial!
http://discontinuum.org/Events/HPCMem03.html
I should be finishing the flyers tonight. Emails will go out soon.
Also got my wife as a sponsor for the HPC; Tastefully Simple will donate a gift basket for either CTP or raffle. Great food!
Brett, please bring your basket. Jon Brakel & Shawn, please bring yours if possible. I'll bring mine for putting basket.
Temporary holes will be ALL NEW!
I need ideas for raffle (what prizes?).
THANKS!
Good idearrrrr! Whatduya think, Doctor?
(If the Dr. isn't online, can you suggest it to him, BC?)
Thanks!!! All help will be welcome.
Also, I'll be posting a flyer later tonight. If folks can post 'em at every course around, we'll be rockin'!
Here's the flyer.......
It is in Word format.
Depending on the weather, I doubt we'll break 50 players. But we might, but instead of adding more holes, I'd prefer to do a staggered start.
Of course, I am open to rounds of 15 holes, but that would extend the day by up to an hour.
So far, we have 4 baskets from Brett, Jon, Chud, and me. If we could get 3 more, if the weather is OK and people want to play more, we could easily set up 3 more temp holes, possibly using the soccer field.
Yes, a bunch of folks who were at the Blast are on my current email list. Thanks to all for posting flyers too!
I trust no one to keep their own score. Especially myself! :-)
At all but 2 PDGA events, we rotated as scorekeepers in the group. I like this because it spreads the burden around evenly and allows you to get to know the other players perhaps a little more (more interaction).
Also, it will ease keeping track of players by division. At da Blast, there were some cards with Pros and Advanced, and some with Pro Woman, Pro, and Amateur (final round). That was confusing. Just ask Jason!
BTW, Chain Reaction will be at the HPC Memorial too.
That's just one of the things I like about you Brakels. You're always clear on where you stand..... :-)
Thanks, Frog! Would it help to have a signer/translator at our bigger events for the hearing impaired? I know those of you who played last year's Blast said it wasn't necessary, but just let me know if we need to supply a signer.
Thanks, Jon! I thought FlipCity was 18 holes. Recent upgrade? I'd love to play that course sometime this summer!
Jon, please refresh my memory. Will you be at the HPC or at FlipCity? If you won't be at HPC, will you be bringing your basket to Leagues on Sunday for us to use at the tourney? THANKS!
BC, if you are planning on bringing your SkillShot, we'd be happy to use it as a practice basket. People don't like my single-chained Tri-State much.
We will be having a raffle for another Ching Mini SkillShot, a few discs, an Innova Towel, and a cool Tourist t-shirt donated by Damon.
For food, I thought we'd have snacks made by Kirsten/Tastefully Simple, and pizza from Pizza Hut. Sound OK?
Need a volunteer to run and get pizza after the first round.
I also need a volunteer to buy a mix of bottled pop, bottled/boxed juice, and bottled water. You will be reimbursed the day of the event.
Also need a volunteer to help at registration and with scorekeeping in between rounds.
I will be getting to the course about 7am to string OB boundaries, mark tees, and clean up any loose garbage. Please join me if you can.
Am I forgetting anything??????
OK, for baskets we have:
Mirth's M14
Brett's M3
Shawn's
Jon's?
Myk's SkillShot
Good we'll have a practice basket and at least 3 good baskets for holes A,B & C. If we have more, we can use them for a casual, alternate-holes Skins round after the tourney.
Steve, you're hired! THANKS!
I'll be bringing 2 coolers with ice, but we could prob use a few more. Any volunteeers?
Yes, we can use Chud's basket too, but since he has not confirmed being there, I'd rather use baskers of those who will be there fer sher.
Woo-hoo! I'm a-gettin' excited, baby!
Yes, we will use drop zones for the tennis courts, the creek on Hole 9, and the lake. Walking paths NOT OB.
As usual, we will be playing modified PDGA rules. Either minis or no flip for marking lies. Throwing order, scorecard issues, and faults will be enforced. OB will be clearly stated on maps and at player mtg.
Yes, Steve and Damon, please bring coolers. Thanks!
I spoke with Pizza Hut and we will prob get several pizzas for Saturday's lunch instead of cash this month. That works for me. I do have plenty of cups, bowls, napkins, and plates (maybe plasticware too) left over from Ice Bowl.
Is anyone planning on coming but NOT playing in the tourney? if so, please call me (847-244-6729). I will need at least one person to help with scoring, etc. Paul C will prob help, but not for sure.
Yes, Mirth, please check with Brett for flags for baskets. Also marking alternate tees with flags worked great before; can we do it again? If Mirth and Brett can get there @ 7am to start doing this, that would be GREAT!
I will be home tonight after 8:30. please call me with ANY questions or suggestions!!!
THANKS to everyone for helping!!!
Sorry you won't be with us, Doctor!
Shawn, we'll use your basket right behind the ball diamond's center field.
Hole A will be usable, and I will be out there tomorrow (Friday) at about 5pm to clear it out a bit more and make a decent teebox. If anyone can join me, please do!
Hole B is still non-existent. WPD didn't have time to do it. Hole C is cleared (I spent 2 hrs clearing it tonight) and would be playable exept for the mud and logistics (nowhere to cross the creek yet). It is all mud or water or both. Bad news, but we'll use Hole A, and temporary holes will be set up going around the ball diamond as last year, and going west along Yorkhouse Road (the extra alternate we did not use for the Blast).
If anyone can get there early on Sat, please do. We will need help sprucing up the park, marking tees and drop zones. Also, minor cleanup might still be needed on Hole A.
Thanks to everyone for pitching in! I think we'll have a decent turnout and a TON o' FUN!
It's after 12:30am, but everything should be ready for this morning. If I didn't have so much help, this TD would be in big trouble. I guess thats what friends and club members are for.... THANKS to EVERYONE who is doing anything to help out at this event!!!! And THANKS to all of you who just show up to play as well!
I spent about 4 hours tonight hacking out the two new tees for Hole A and sprucing up Holes 8 & 9. I hope y'all like it.
There's still a bunch of loose garbage on the back holes especially. Let's try to make the course as pretty as possible (with all the mud).
I'll be out early, making a few trips from the house. So if you get there early (6:30-7:00am) and I'm not there, I soon will be; just making a run.
Should be lots of FUNNNNNNN!
Pat - I hope you got my message about 2 long tables and a few chairs. If not, that's OK. We'll make due.
I'm going to go over the $$$ from this event and post a complete breakdown later this week.
Thanks to Jay for the laptop, Mirth for the scorecards, flags, and tee markings, Steve for the pop, juice, and ice, Brett for the clipboards and tee marking, Becky and Jon for helping at registration, Josh, Kurt, and Chain Reaction for the prize discs, Pizza Hut for the pizza, and all the other folks who helped out in any way!!!
It is always a great pleasure for me to host events where people have fun. That's what it's all about!
el bruce - thanks bunches! Can you email me specific info (cost/times/directions. etc) please? A nice B&B sounds great! I highly doubt I can make it, but really want to show some support for MI events (read: check with Mrs.Klem) Also have heard good things about No Foolin!
Yeah, the group of 6 was a bit much and my fault. The last round had 1 grp of 4 and 1 of 6. I was more interested in just getting people back out quickly. Next time I think it would be better to take an extra 5 minutes in between rounds to balance groups better. Grouping by score is ideal.
Also agree that 2 rounds for Recs is better. My concern was having a bunch of Juniors show up and not be able to handle lots of holes; but they'd get their moneys worth!
Every time I run an event, I learn something. I take the best bits and pieces of other tourneys I've been to and put 'em togther. Or try. :-)
And yes, Shawn and I have discussed Ams getting cash. If there were no Rec division, I'd agree. But it ends up being a nice plus for cashing Ams. At the Blast, we had a ton of Ams and we paid out 55% of them I believe, but the amounts were smaller.
Although it ended up being pretty good overall, I apologize for not thinking things through a bit more thoroughly. All these suggestions are good ones and I'm glad we'll have the chance to put 'em to use in the future!
Attached are the results and totals of the event. I checked my addition, and of course, it needed fixing. We came out a little better than I thought financially. See for yourself; it is an html doc.
Hmmm. 31. THANKS and good catch!
New, updated results page attached.
That's what I get for doing things at midnight....
OK, the latest updated results sheet is attached. It includes payouts (or what I think were payouts - someone deleted the spreadsheet, even though I gave no instrux not to do so...) :-). They're really close if not exact.
Also, Recreational players got:
1st: 5 discs & mini
2nd: 4 discs & mini
3rd: 3 discs & mini.
This was a bad call on my part. Since we only had 3 rec players, payouts should have been smaller, but they only played 1 round and I wanted them to get their $$ worth. Just goes to show that you can't rely on entry fees to make payouts..... THANKS GOODNESS FOR SPONSORS!!!!
Thanks, Jim. That means a lot, especially since you guys all drive from so far away. Yes, grouping folks together by score will be done at future events like the Widdershins. It is more fun that way!
I can bring my Mach3 Portable to set up 1 of the 3 temp holes.
I can also help put up flyers. I can post at Round Lake & Libertyville. Club members can hit several other courses.
I can get there early to help set up as well.
That logo is sweet!
COOL FROG!!!
Bringing friends is always good!
Thanks Frog
Flyers are up @ Round Lake & Libertyville. Has anyone posted one @ UW Parkside?
I will bring my Mach3 Portable. Shawn, can you bring you Innova Discatcher? That would be 2 high quality pole holes.
We are planning on playing 3 rounds of 12 holes. With 4 per hole that would be 48 total. Do we have any extra holes as a backup plan if we get 70 players again?
Have we contacted those who played the Bevier Blast?
Also, I think we should have a score card for each player. It makes is much easier & faster. This way we don't have to fill out score cards each round.
Are ob's going to be the same as leagues? please don't make walking paths ob.
Can someone pick up some flags? I have some but would like to keep them for leagues. I purchased 100 of them & i'm down to 25 or so. We'd need
72 of them to do all 12 holes (that's if there are 3 places to throw the 3 alternates from.
Mirth,
I do have a roll of the orange tape. It usually takes 2 rolls to do all 9 holes so you might want to pick up 1. I can help put them out that morning. I have some paint to paint the lines as well.
Later
i got flags & tape @ Menard's
Looks like
Cloudy
40-45 degrees
10-12 MPH
Looks like a decent day.
How awesome was yestarday? I had a blast!! There were close to 40 players. Thanks to Jim for putting on another great tournament. Thanks to all club members for helping!!!!! There more help we get the more we benefit in the long run. I think all the hard work for the past couple of years is starting to pay off. We made $82.00 for the club. There we tons of prizes & cash given away. You can't beat FREE PIZZA for lunch. I was also abe to watch some great Pros throw the final 4 holes. Can't wait for 3rd Annual Widdershins Open.
Jim & I discussed this on the phone last night. Any feedback on what went well & anything that might need to be modified for the Widdershins.
Here is what I liked.
1. PAYOUTS!! (CASH) & Raffle
2. Format- 3 rounds of 12 holes, excellent temps.
3. FREE PIZZA
4. Got to see some great pros throw at the end. That was awesome.
What I would do different.
1. Smaller groups if possible. (top scores on 1 card) & so on.
2. Final 4 holes for top 4 from each division.
3. Have Rec players play 2 rounds of 12 holes.
4. OB for the road-] I think that anything that comes to rest completely on the road including the curb should be considered OB. I think that if you throw on the road & it doesn't come to rest on the top of the curb or grass, it should be OB. I think you are rewarded for making a bad shot.
5. Maybe add a few extra temp holes and play 3 rounds of 14 or 15 holes.
What do you guys think?
Looks great Jim!
$117.00
Beats losing $ like we used to.
My basket is available, Craig has a new mach 2 that I should be able to get if needed. Let me know.
Plan on being there around 7:30 Where do you want my basket located? I don't have wheels so closer to the lot would be good.
Final Four....not so cool for Paul who is about 200ft shorter then the big arms. How many spots did he fall in cashing from the last 4? You play well and then get smoked by big arms on ludicrious holes..not cool. I would not do this again. Maybe a skins for 4 holes. Top 4 open and have a raffle for others to get into the skins as partners and play alternate shot. or something ..
Please don't have a final for all players, just the best.
We had 6 in our group all day following..I mean waiting on another 6'em all day. Smaller groups..Yes.
OB...don't care either way as long as it is clearly stated. Kind of liked the rule that we used when I overdrove "C" from the long and had a leaner on the curb on the entrance road.
I also don't like having AMs getting cash....but Jim and I have discussed this before and he likes it that way. It promotes bagging in the long run.
We could always talk to DR. DYE and see if he'd be willing to donate his dyeing abilities for a couple of discs.
I'll bring my skillshot, too. we actually need the baskets this time, right??
Why not have each player in a foursome keep track another person's (in the same 4 some of course) score? Seems pretty reasonable to me. Or you could just have everyone keep track of their own score and hope everyone is honest.
CE ROC :-) Umm another mini hole I liked that :-)
Ofcourse you can count on my help and that would mean Fernandos then too :-)
Well me and Fernando will be there I may or may not be playing. Last night on my way home from work while walking to th train I hurt my ankle and leg while going down the stairs. The steps leading into the CTA staition are brick and when it rains(like yesterday) filled with water. So Im walking down trying to avoid the huge pnds and a brick was missing! Ofcourse I didn't see it stepped in it, twisting my right ankle and sending me flying down the stairs. It's okay though because my let leg stopped all my momentum :-( You should have heard what I said to the cta guy downstairs. Too bad I didn't break my leg or something I would sue....
OKay sorry for drifting... Either way though I will be there, is there anything else that needs to be brought?

Well I liked everything you liked to start. As for things I would like to see different....
]]I didnt have a problem with the amount of players per card I was always in a group of 4 I think, but if we wanted to do this we would need more..
]]HOLES, I think 14 or 15 per round would be good, but 18 would be even better :-) *insert random suggestion* I think we should sometime someyear have an Iron (wo)man tournament. LIke 6 rounds of 18 holes :-) I know I would play :-)
]]I agree with the OB curb ruling, even thoughit has saved my but once before
]]The Final Four... Hmm thats a toughy... I REALLY REALLY enjoyed watching the pros throw those last holes, it really was awe inspiring. As long as they different divisions were one after another so I could watch them guys through(assuming I would ever make a final four) I like the idea. We would have to come up with different holes I think though, because no am's/adv save Mirth have that kind of D.
Coun me in to help. And I'd like to help sponsor something as well if possible, maybe CTP again or something like that. I'll send you a private message about it though.
I say we raffle off Kyle. He's a nice guy and great at designing logos :-)
Pat-it appears as if you will probably get to keep your tag for another week :-) I'm not going to be able to make it Saturday. Too much stuff going on with the wedding and we are closing on our house this week so I think I'm gonna take a hiatus for a little while. Good luck guys and have fun.

The only problem with that system is that its a lot of score cards for the player keeping score to shuffle thru on each hole.

I think we should really stick to PDGA rules.
It is cumbersome to flip thru 4 score cards, you can debate how combersome it is, but if you only have 12 holes, you only have to fill out 12 score cards in between each round. That's only 36 cards for the day. Doing a score card for each person would be about the same or possibly more depending on turn out.
PDGA rules allow for combined and individual score cards. I was referring to keeping the scores yourself is not allowed by PDGA rules. Of course when its your turn you do keep your score, but part of that is to announce the scores after each hole, including your own.
The combined or individual cards is just a preference, and I was just making my preference known.
Whatever you decided, Mr. TD, I'll be there to help out! I plan on playing but can lend a hand before/after/between rounds. And I will have my basket there. If you need my basket for the Widdershins, remind me before the event and I can it to you or Brett or someone. Flip City has 24 baskets in the ground, so I won't need mine that weekend.
I will be there Jim with my basket volunteering as per my post.
I would like to suggest that even though this isn't a PDGA event, that we do play by PDGA rules. OB would then be defined as completely surrounded by OB, rather than the rule that is often explained with the curb.
Jim, if you are using mandos, have you read the PDGA mando rules? They changed last year. Now you don't "unwind", you play from a drop zone.
Since scoring will be between rounds, I can help with that also.
I'm glad to hear it went well. I was a non-officiating player on Saturday, and the non-playing official on Sunday at that B-tier at Kensington. I played with 50 players on Saturday and officiated 88 players on Sunday. I also was the transportation chief for the junior girls division. Otherwise I would have been at the HPC, I think.
Illinois boy, Jason McKinney, won in advanced and left a very good impression
Jim, at the No Foolin' this coming weekend, March 29 and 30, Hudson Mills Metropark, Ann Arbor, MI, they will be offering a Pro 2 division. I understand that you have life issues that are keeping you close to home, but I thought I'd mention it. You could eat and sleep free at the Windcroft B&B using Jon's reservations. The Windcroft is 45 minutes from the course but the proprietors are disc golf friendly and will even do early breakfast for players. It is a no-smoking facility, however.
no matter how hard I try I can never get someone to work for me on Sat mornings. So, unfortunatly I will not be attending. Good luck to all and see you on Sunday.

arrgh, wish I'd seen this last night, was out in Lombard today. (how'd I do? depends on which round....)

I put a flyer up at Buffalo Grove today.

Shuffling through the cards is not that big a deal, IMO, esp. since it's only a 12-hole round. Could come out to 3 holes a player.

I had a great time too (in spite of anxiety over my car situation, which actually may have been enough of a distraction to help my play ;)). I'll probably miss the Widdershins only because I'm hoping to play Peoria that wknd, but my .0002 anyhow...
I liked everything that Brett liked. I would also like Brett's arm, but that's another topic.
(well, I'd prefer Dave Keel's arm, but I'd settle for Brett's....)

What I would do different.
1. Smaller groups if possible. (top scores on 1 card) & so on.
I thought some of the groups were a little big, but after thinking about it, smaller groups assigned to 'more holes' would have increased the chances of groups overrunning one another (or whatever), and there's the situations where certain players want to play together (or maybe *not* want to play together ;p ). Might be a moot point when the next tournament gets a max turnout....
Quote
2. Final 4 holes for top 4 from each division.
That could be interesting if a bit time-consuming. Perhaps get someone in scuba gear to retrieve the drives across the pond...
Quote3. Have Rec players play 2 rounds of 12 holes.
Absolutely. $15 for 12 holes of DG seemed a little steep to me.

Seems to me that the outer edge (street edge) of the *top* of the curb should be the OB line, not the part extending into the street (the 'cement crack').
i.e. if a disc is flat on the street (below the *top* of the curb), it's out if it's not touching the vertical part of the curb;
on top of the curb (flat) hanging over the street, it's in;
resting against the *vertical* part of the curb from the street (..... |\ ) at any angle, it's in (line of verticality or whatever).

If nothing else, I'm good for carrying heavy things and being a gopher. I'll be happy to help with setting up temps, marking OB, helping with registration, whatever you need. Unless I hear different, I will plan on being there around 7:30(ish).
We'll JOsh, if it's any consolation, this is the week I was gonna whup you anyway, so you're lucky you aren't going to be there. ;)

My pleasure! Glad I can do something to help out!
I've got one big cooler I can bring, and I will stop for some ice on the way down that morning. I think the Marathon right there on the corner of Sheridan and Old York Town Road sells ice, so that will work out pretty well. Anything else, let me know!
