Seeing how sanctioning has not been assured yet, this topic has been moved into the non-public area until the event's fate is known.

I changed the top level post, as going in and tweaking every single post to this thread would have taken forever.

Also, since this event is now officially sanctioned I will move the thread back out into the public area of the board.

Are you not going to be at league tomorrow? I was going to bring all that stuff then.

The logo/art I have for him is kinda lame, its a letterhead dating back to when Waukegan was still (312). He has a much better logo on business cards and what not that I wanted to get but couldn't get over there today.

If I get it tomorrow or Monday & scan it, would Monday night be too late for you to get it?

Or 94 North towards Milwaukee & get off @ Buckley or Belvedere and head West to Fairfield Rd. Turn right on Fairfield, course will be on the left side North of Belvedere.

Yeah, I think Myk's thinking score for one round...

A -25 by the pros would mean one person needs to hit all birds plus pick up 7 aces. Heh!

Now, I'd be interested in what folks say the Pro's will get on #18... Unless someone hits the virtual ace on their second shot my dollar's on a 3.

There are many other conflicts in the region throughout the year.

May 3-4: Standing Rocks Open (Ams) and Michiana Open

May 10-11: Homies Spring Fling and Standing Rocks Open

May 17-18: Bowling Green Open and Camden Doubles

June 7-8: Baraboo Open and Peoria Open

July 5-6: Mad City Open and Sinnissippi Open

July 12-13: Fox Valley Open and Minnesota Majestic

and my favorite scheduling bungle:

July 19-20: Manitowoc and KCWO and IL State Championships

If we point this out to Brian, he might be more willing to allow sanctioning of our event. Either way, if we are rejected, we should immediately appeal.

Rick at DGW has responded to the Stir Fry logo question:

*****

The Stir-Fried logo is copyrighted by Chuck Custer, who licenses it to Disc Golf World exclusively. I'd prefer not have it used in another logo.

So there it is. Jay, if you can rework the logo w/o the StirFry, please give it a go.

Just my 2 cents:

The IL Open thread on the PDGA MessBoard is getting a little over the top in terms of shameless self-promotion. Although I understand the excitement, I don't think we need to post every time someone registers.

Aside from that, seems like the IO is going to be a hit.

Mirth, can you list me as a hole sponsor please (with your OK, Jon). BTW, Jon, when do you need $$?

OUR FIRST C-TIER IS HISTORY!

What a day!  Although Jon and Brett had to turn away nearly 30 players because a full field was registered before 8am!  44 total online preregistrations!  Wow!

Payouts were good, no casualties, a fun final 4, and a profit was made. Woo-hoo!

BIG THANKS TO: Jon, Brett, Bruce, Becky, Jay, Carrie, Brandon, Slim, Madissen, Dr. Dye, Phenix Disc Sports, the RL Park District, the RL Police Department, and so many others who helped execute a really fun day!

THANKS also to all the players!  We hope you had fun!

Yeah, we had to turn almost 30 people away, which is unfortunate. The PDGA limits the number of players to a maximum of 5 per hole grouping. 18x5=90 players max. With more than 5 per hole, that first round would have taken 4 or 5 hours instead of 3.

Although many thought we would fill up, we never thought it would have happened so fast for our first C-Tier event. 44 online pre-registrations only left 46 spots on Sunday morning. Those were gone fast.

Sorry you didn't get to play. Next year, perhaps we will have a 2-day event.

But....

don't forget about the Bevier Blast on September 20th! we're hoping to get that sanctioned as well. but because Bevier is so small, we're maxing out at 60 players (12 holes x 5 players = 60 players max.)  Maybe we'll stick in a few extra holes, but there's not much room there.

And I just gotta say . . .

In my own humble opinion, Jon and Brett did a great job! The teamwork that went into this event was evident Sunday. Facing massive crowds, including top pros and dozens of newbies, handling lots of merchandise, and coordinating payouts and people and.....

they stood strong, and got da bidness dun!

Good job, fellas. I wish it could have all been on tape.

Some food sponsor would have been great. Who were the folks selling gatorade, etc.? I missed some of the awards and thank-yous because of officating the 3rd/4th place pro playoff, so if they were mentioned, i missed it.

Our Pizza Hut sponsor is specifically the Waukegan Pizza Hut at Sunset & Lewis. I have no idea where the closest PH is to Fairfield Park.  But we are currently working on finalizing sponsorship and making flyers.

FMI, see the thread of 2003 Bevier Blast within a day or two.

It does say on the pdga that tournaments of c-b need to be 250 miles apart. It also says if both TD's agree that they can be scheduled on the same day. I was looking at the pdga & it is loaded. I don't mind pushing it back but one of the main reasons I wanted to have this tournament in August is to promote the Bevier Blast. We'll have to sit down & crunch Jon!

Looks like this event is going to be rescheduled. We are looking for a  new date with the assistance of PDGA. Current PDGA rules really restrict us with scheduling due to the amount of sanctioned tournaments in the midwest. We have to look at 5 states schedules.

Sanctioned B&C tournaments have to be 250 miles apart.

Sanctioned C&C tournaments have to be 200 miles apart.

200-250 miles covers WI, IL, IN, IA, & MI. It doesn't cover the entire state of these but it does cover the majority of areas with sanctioned tournaments. Indianapolis is within 250 miles of Round Lake. Hopefully the PDGA will realize we are in a key location to host a PDGA events & help us out.

Can someone post a flyer at Parkside? I forgot to do it on Sunday.

Waukegan, Round Lake, Libertyville, & Streamwood have flyers up.

Anyone heading to Milwaukee to play?

Jon & I are playing Lombard, Streamwood, & Crystal Lake leagues to pub & pass out flyers occasionally. Jon passed out flyers at a tournament in Joliet a few weeks ago. Please take flyers to events that you play at. I will be playing in the Illinois State Championships so i'll take some down to Joliet as well.

You can also help by going to the PDGA Board & talking up the tournament. People do notice. Here's the link-] http://www.pdga.com/discus/messages/5547/8562.html?1057082415

There are a lot of people that know about this tournament. There are more that have no idea about DISContinuum & the 2003 Illinois Open. Please help.

Also thought this was neat. Had a guy e-mail me from Maine. He won the tournament @ Fairfield when the Deaf Disc Golf Tournament took place a few monthes ago. He wants to buy an Illinois Open disc.

I would like to thank Bruce for publicizing the Illinois Open at the awards ceremony yestarday at the Illinois State Championships. Jon also talked to all the AM's that played on Saturday. Thanks guys!

The word is out & many know about the tournament. Leagues at Waukegan, Libertyville, Round Lake, Streamwood, Lombard, Kenosha & Crystal Lake have all been informed.

Flyers have been posted @ Waukegan, Libertyville, Round Lake, Streamwood, Lombard, Crystal Lake, Kenosha, Sheyboygan & Manitowoc. If you are heading to any other courses, please help & post a flyer. If you have posted a flyer at any other courses, please let me know.

Rob Schoenhoft has informed the Rockford Area.

I am heading down to stay with my parents for a few days. I'm going to post flyers at Morton, Bradley, & Pekin.

Our webmasters have done a terrific job on the website getting information on quickly. Everything looks fantastic. Thanks Jay & Mirth!

The PDGA message board has been posted on many times. Please stop by & pump up the IO.

Please help spread the word. This is our chance to host a big event & get our name out to people. It is also a big opportunity to publicize the Steady Ed/Blast? We should have flyers ready to go to hand out that day.

I'm still hoping club members will pre-register. It looks good having 30+ pre-registrations 3 weeks in advanced for a first time tournament. I would also hate to see someone running late the morning of & no spots are available. I am optomistic that all 90 spots will fill.

#10 was the only hole that we measured around the bend. There was no really good way to get the 250FT tape directly from the tee to the basket. The rest of the holes were measured from tee to basket.

Sorry this has been delayed. Right now Jon, Bruce, & I are sitting in a court office. Most power around here is not working but Bruce's work is on. This is also the first time i've been on a computer since we left on Sunday.

I wanted to thank Jim, Jay, Brandon, Jeff, Becky, Bruce, Jon, RLAPD & all the sponsors of the 2003 Illinois Open. This is what I envisioned when we first started this adventure. Everything ran very smoothly for a first time event.

I think Jon & Bruce should get a huge thanks. Thanks Guys!! I enjoyed being behind the scenes & seeing what has to take place to be an organized & successful events. It doesn't get much better. I've learned a lot this past weekend. You can have great payouts to Pros without skimming from the AM divisions. We hope to run this event again next year. We've already been discussing what we can modify to make it better.

Only complaints that I heard were the Pro's and I agree with what they said.  From what I heard there was only about 10 or so open players and others were turned away.  They said that out of the 90 players so many should have been AM's and so many Pros.  It could easily be fixed with 2 days.  But hey, 1st one, good job guys.

I'm with Damon and Jay on this one.  Prereg was available how many months in advance of the tourney?  Enough to get 40+ people I guess.  Seems like that would have been enough time for a Pro that really wants to compete to register IMHO.  I mean, I prereg'd on the last day because I knew that if I didn't get there at 6am the day of the tourney, I wasn't going to get to play.  Oh well, that's all water under the bridge now I guess.

Yeah as Jim mentioned the stiry fry logo is a trademark of Rick at DGW. We looked into using that logo once before, but never got around to checking with Rick. Figured he might be okay with it since he's a club sponsor.

I also plan on cleaning up the stirfry design a bit.

Post by: myndcraft on August 11, 2003, 10:42:16 AM
I shot a +2 the first round and +4 the second round.

My first round was going very well until hole 7. I threw my first shot into a tree, that flinged it into the woods and I had time getting back out. I took a 5 or a 6 on that hole. Also in the first round I threw my first drive on 18 about 2 feet in front of me and straight to the gfround taking a 7. So those holes killed that round.

My second round was falling over tired and it showed.

On the plus side my up-shots are improving and it shows. I made canned two 70 foot upshots for deuces and hit chains about another 6 times from 50-80 feet out.

I had no input on any of the items you mentioned, but I will comment on them anyways.

Quote

spotter needed on 11  the swamp was eating discs left and right

i played up because i cant throw over it  (my problem)

slowed play

I agree, but then again the spotters are usually used on holes where you cant see the disc after a portion of the flight. On the case of hole 12 you take a risk by not laying up.

Quotethe flyer did say registration 8 am - 9 am now one could argue that hey its 8 am and the field is filled i would have got here earlier if i had known you opened registration early

I don't personally see how opening registration 5 or even 10 minutes early would have changed peoples chances of getting to play. A line was formed way before 8:00 so even if they started registration after 8:00 anyone showing up would still have to get in a line with the same number of people before them. Either way they don't get to play. The problem wasn't starting thisw or that early, it was people showing up too late.

Quoteyour sponser pizza hut missed a great oppurtunity to sell pizza at lunch they could have charged a buck fifty a slice

Yeah they could have made a killing, but I think the distance was the biggest factor. If they ran out and needed more they couldn't just rush some over.

Anyways glad you had a good time, will we be seeing you at the Bevier Blast?

Shawn, I understand what your saying and would have loved to see more Open players, but my only question is this, by doing so wouldn't it be unfair to turn away the 10 ams or juniors that showed up earlier to register than the 10 pros?

In my eyes, its a tricky thing. More open players would have been nice, but is it worth it at the cost of turning away dedictaed am?

Im making a page on the site for the Open. Which email do you want listed? the aol one or a discontinuum one? Oh and yes, I was giggling at you :-) Not bad though!

After showing Brett today here's the design I am going to use for the logo on the site unless there are any objections. As always  comments are always welcome.

If you can do an illinoisopen@discontinuum.org e-mail address and forward the mail to illinoisopen@aol.com, please do. Then later you can clue me in on how to use it.

I prefer the one with the disc, and please do use it for the web page. I'm considering it for the tournament stamp if there is one. Everyone is welcome to submit an idea for the stamp, even if you only have the idea but don't have any skills to make it happen.

If anyone wants to register for the tournament by mail instead of on-line, please write down the information requested from the on-line registration. Then mail that along with a check or money order to:

Jon Brakel

Wheeling, IL 60090

Make check payable to Discontinuum Disc Golf Club and make sure to include the $5 fee for non-PDGA members if you are not a member. Please include your membership number if you are a PDGA member.

we'll run any division that we get 3 players for. That means that any division is being offered. I won't have an Intermediate Amateur Master plaque, but I would have a trophy disc for the division. Unless I get enough registered before the event to justify.

(I fixed my typo that some of the below posts refer to)

yes, I did mean Intermediate Amateur Master. And if we only have two Int. Am Masters that want to play each other, I don't have a problem with running the division for two, just don't expect a big payout. The payout would only be what those two have paid in their fees.

When I listed Am Master, I meant Adv Am Master which would be $30. Int Am Master would be $20. Anyone can register for any official pdga division that they qualify to play in. I will probably run that division if I get at least two people who insist on playing in it. But all prize money comes from the entry fees of that division, and I may not have a plaque for the less popular divisions.

My father-in-law said I could use his tent. It is 10' X 20' & has side panels. It is a top notch tent. I figured this will be where registration can be set up & I hope to barrow another tent from RLAPD.

We can use that one for tournament central and the RLAPD tent can be used for a player area for before, between and after rounds. Maybe we can set up a couple of the water coolers in there.

Here's the flyer. Someone please print it out and make sure it looks normal. I'll be distributing them at the MDGO this weekend (can't hurt). Please pass them out at Parkside. Brett, can you take some to Parkside this weekend? Is anyone going to the Peoria Open? I'd like to get some down that way also.

The flyer is now corrected. Thanks Damon.

Ask questions, rave about the work that the parks dept. and we have done, start rivalry banter about how you're gonna dominate your field, whatever.

BREAKING NEWS...We have a $100 plus sponsor for the Illinois Open. Bruce Brakel is generously donating all of the trophy discs (and paying for the dying as well) for the Illinois Open. With our original merchandise agreement Bruce was to sell us the discs at wholesale and we would pay for the Dr. Dye art. But last night Bruce called me and told me he wanted to donate the trophy discs outright. If we use 16 of the trophy discs, that will be a $120 donation (at wholesale prices)! It's a much larger donation if you consider the retail price.

Thanks Bruce!

I sold the last of the Ice Bowl minis at the Flip City MDGO. We got $1 each for them for a total of $20 (or did we sell them for $2 and there were 10 of them? Not sure anymore, but we did get $20 for whatever number we sold). Does anyone mind if I add $5 to that and sponsor a hole for Discontinuum?

Just my 2 cents:

The IL Open thread on the PDGA MessBoard is getting a little over the top in terms of shameless self-promotion...

Mirth, can you list me as a hole sponsor please (with your OK, Jon). BTW, Jon, when do you need $$?

Promotion=sales. I think the magic figure is around 7 or 9. Someone has to see or hear about something new 7 to 9 times before they start to consider it. Some people are different, they like to try new things, but the 7 to 9 impressions is an average. Also it helps when they get it from more than 1 source. My partner at best shot in Lombard had seen the Illinois Open posts on the PDGA web site, then he saw Jo-jo's thread about the discs including IO discs, then he met me and we talked about it. Then he was my partner again in Streamwood and I talked about it again. If one of his friends talks to him about it, he's a lock! Keep the shameless promotion alive, PLEASE!

I'd like to get the money asap and merch for that matter, so I can finalize planning as early as possible. From anyone else, I'd insist on the money before we post them as a sponsor, but I guess for you I'll let that slide. ;)

The two Texans who are coming up for the Illinois Open want to play Intermediate Amateur Master, so Damon, you've got your division. Also one of the Texans, Charles, is donating a wire disc golf sculpture to be auctioned off. Proceeds to be donated to Discontinuum. Perhaps we'll do a silent auction for that.

Sponsor signs are made, just have to staple gun them to stakes, new course map is made, score cards are jugging out of the printer as we speak, I'll just have to cut them. I'm posting the pdf of the IO score card in case anyone wants to take a look. It'll also be out here if you want to print out one to take to the course. The card has all the distances on them and the CTPs we'll be playing next Sunday. Can't believe its NEXT Sunday! WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!

Hey Jon,

the cards look great - the background is cool. I hate to, um, rain on this, but you've got CTPs for ams twice - should one of them actually be Adv, or are they both Am/Adv, or....  ?

I wanted a reminder on the score card but there isn't room to spell it all out. I can never remember what hole is what for CTPs, so I really wanted to put them on there.

So, here's how it works: The Rec/Jr is for Recreational the Juniors, the W is for women, the two Am are for ALL Amateurs, the All is for everyone--Pro and Am alike. So, any woman that plays can shoot for all the CTPs, the Recs and Jrs. can shoot at all of them except for the womens, Int and Adv can shoot at 3 and pros can only go for the one on 18.

We will also be having a pie toss for pies and other prizes that everyone including volunteers and spectators will be eligible to shoot for. So, there will be plenty of prize opportunities for all.

There are routes. The end of #2 uses #7 fairway and there are plenty of gaps in that row of trees across the field. #3 is playing backwards up #14 and finishing at basket #12.

They will NOT be mowed however, so I'd like the club members that are going to be there to spot during the pro final please. Some areas that they land in will be mowed, but it will just be hit or miss.

All measurements were made from the tee pad to the basket in a straight line. That way from the tee pad you know the distance to the basket. As a player you must compensate for the route that you take. I will note that in the player info sheet for the tournament and on subsequent maps.

Brett and I are in Michigan, but they have computers and stuff here also. :)

I will post results as soon as I do the PDGA report. I'm hoping to have some time on Wednesday or Thursday. Bruce, Brett and I are running another C tier on Tuesday, so it definitely won't be then. Although since this one is on Tuesday we're figuring it to be less than 30 people.

We filled the field at 8:22am after starting registration at about 7:55am. Starting early didn't leave anyone out as the line was already about 20 deep and we didn't get thru the waiters until well after 8. We also included 5 people as "floaters" in order to accomodate 95 total players instead of just 90. The floaters started on hole 1 after the group that started on 1 finished 1. This worked because two groups could be on 18 at the same time because it is so long.

We are really sorry that not as many people could play as wanted to, but its just like the movie theatre, when the seats are sold, you gotta wait for the next show. next show time is September 20th at Bevier.

Whenever people don't get in, there's dissapointment. The only thing I can do about that is run it as a split day next year. EVERYTHING else went so smoothly thanks to everyone that helped out!

I probably won't be getting results posted as we seem to be constantly on the move. The courses in MI are eating Brett alive (or so he thinks), but really he's just not used to getting fours on holes and that being ok.

Off to have more fun and take Brett to one or two more courses he's never seen.

I was posting this yesterday when my computer broke down:

August 2 is the Indiana State Championships.  Running unsanctioned against the Indiana States is not likely to be a wise tournament promotion plan.

If you look at the PDGA schedule and the tournament separation requirements, it looks to me like the next available date is September 20 or 21.

Please don't schedule against the USWDGC the following weekend.

If the paperwork is in, you should get e-mail shortly from Brian Hoeniger telling you that August 2 is not available.

Jon, this is a sample of the small leaderboard card I'm using for the MDGO at Flip City.  I am going to print them on card stock in five colors I can distinguish and have them cut at Kinkos.

There would be some Brakel family economies of scale involved if you wanted to use the same cards in the same colors.

Damon, you don't really have to worry about sandbaggers since (a) in every region of the United States most players are already playing up a division and (b) every player I used to think was sandbagging in Am II, (yeah, I have a list!) as it turns out has an Am II rating, including me!

The PDGA Message Board threads disappear into the archives about 36 hours after the last post.  Except for the occaisional threads about drugs, raping the amateurs to pay the pros, or throwing farther, most threads die every weekend unless someone pimps new life into them.

The Texas players have figured this out and they pimp their threads endlessly.

On behalf of Brett, Jon and myself, I'd like to thank Slim, Brandon, Jay, Jason, Jim, Becky and anyone I'm forgetting for helping out through out the day.  I'd also like to thank 92 of the 95 players for showing, throwing and having fun.

This tournament will be back next year.  It will be split-day.  Then we will be able to accomodate 76 players each day in foursomes.  For the Pro and Advanced players we are thinking about including some wicked USDGC-style o.b. on the obstacle-free open holes.  The whole concept of cranking your drive out to some random location in the long grass, lagging an upshot and dropping in for par will be eliminated for the upper divisions.  We will probably also offer a reduced entry fee for anyone who wants to compete for the trophies and PDGA points only in their division.

QuoteJon Brakel (05-21-2003 10:09 p.m.):

yes, I did mean Intermediate Amateur Master. And if we only have two Int. Am Masters that want to play each other, I don't have a problem with running the division for two, just don't expect a big payout. The payout would only be what those two have paid in their fees.

OK, here's part of what's confusing me:

First off, I'd recommend that the information on the club page and Brett's page be in sync. Brett's page is what is linked to from the www.illinoisdiscgolf.com site.

It seems to me that the 'amateur master' division (on the club page) should be termed 'advanced master', as the $30 entry fee is the same as the 'advanced' fee; if there's going to be an 'intermediate master' division, then that entry fee should be $20, same as the 'intermediate' division.

...unless, as Jon implies, this is related to payouts based on the # of players within a division. This might explain why, for the Prairie Open, the 'advanced master am' fee is the same as the 'advanced' but the old coots get to play on a different day from the shorter tees - which I'm not complaining about, except that I like where #10 and #11 are now and they're going to be moved for Sunday, but I digress...

Anyhow, I just see some inconsistencies in how the divisions are posted. Jon, can you verify that if, for example, there would be  'advanced master' and 'intermediate master' divisions, payouts within each division would be based on entries within each separate division? Personally, I've played better when I *haven't* been in a 'masters' division anyhow so I'm leaning toward playing 'straight' intermediate and taking my chances w/ sandbaggers ;)

This isn't meant to be negative at all, I'm just genuinely confused about the semantics of all of this.

oh, I don't really 'worry' about sandbaggers, I have enough to worry about w/ my own game ;) In theory I guess I should take advantage of my advanced age by playing in a 'protected' division, but I tend to play better when I don't. Whatever, August is a long way off and I'll see what shape my game and my body is by then....

Damon Short

6211 N. Campbell

Chicago IL 60659

PDGA #17348

Put me down for intermediate. Depending on the adv master pool and the amount of practice I get in (may actually be working in a week or so), I may bump up to there and pay the extra $10.

Also if there's enough interest in an Intermediate Master pool (hey, Pat...), I'd probably go there.

Tim Davis was in the pro finals - so was Bingman, but Kris Hutter won by a significant margin.

Mirth placed pretty well in Am I think.  I was 2nd in Int Master (actually wouldn't have DFL'd in Adv Master) - my play was mildly disappointing but a bit above my usual tournament level... I came back from 3rd place after the 1st round and probably could've taken 1st w/o a couple of choke-holes; although in the 2nd round the other 2 guys I was chasing blew up worse than I did so I'll take what I got. Thanks again:

I just wanted to thank again all the players and spectators who spent cash for discs at this event.  Some of you know, some of you don't, that all "my merch" belongs to the Waterford Junior Girls' Club.  Everything I sell I account for and they get the profit from the sale.  I get the return of my wholesale purchase price, with which I buy more stuff!  Your purchases at the Illinois Open helped make it possible for Diana and I to take six girls to the USWDGC in Peoria where they all competed in the Junior Girls Division.  IO cash sales accounted for about 1/8th of our USWDGC travel budget, so it was pretty significant in helping the club send everyone who wanted to go.

As to next year, it might have to remain a C-tier due to restructuring of tier requirements.  I can't say too much about this yet because the PDGA has not published next year's tier format, but as a State Coordinator I get inside information.  I'm pretty sure it will be a split day C-tier.

[I'll say this:  With what they are currently talking about, this year's Illinois State Championships would not qualify as a B-tier nor would the UWParkside Prairie Open, in spite of their $2400+ pro payouts.]

Regardless, we'll have A-tier am payouts and a Major [think: USDGC] change in the way the course plays on Sunday!

I think the PDGA will be pissing off a lot of people if they have to change a B-Tier to an A-Tier after running it as a B-Tier for so many years.

Actually it would be changing it from a B-tier to a C-tier, Brett.

Last year they allowed TDs to sanction amateurs as a B-tier and pros as a C-tier at the same tournament.  This might be a solution for TDs who can't or don't want to make the new B-tier requirements on the pro side.

If there is an announcement about this stuff, look in the fine print in the back of the winter DGWN.  Or watch here and I'll announce it when something is official.
