Title: IOS #6 @ Aurora
Post by: CEValkyrie on August 21, 2006, 02:36:18 PM
Attached are the tees that will be played for Aurora.

Some quick notes.

Saturday--Adv/Pro--Long Tees both rounds
Sunday--Int/Rec/Jr--Long Tees round #1 & Short Tees round #2

Hole #2 has near identical tees. Round #1 will be played to the right(south) of the sign and Round #2 will be played to the left(north)of the sign on both Saturday & Sunday.

Hole #7A will be played to the east of #8's tee. It will shoot over the water to a portable basket near the lake. There is a short zone you can lay up to or you can drive all the way to the basket. There will be a drop zone if you land in the water off the tee. You will then have to walk back to #8's tee.  Please be courteous when crossing by #8's Tee and back up the fairway.

After you play hole #13 you will walk west around the soccer fields towards the west entrance road. You will have to cross the fairway to #14 to get to #13A. Please be courteous. Holes #13A, B, & C will be played in the Northwest corner of the park leading back to Hole #14. Hole #13C plays down the gravel service road with the fence being OB to the left.

Here is a map of the 18 hole layout. http://www.foxvalleyparkdistrict.org/headlines/discgolf.html

Sweet pin placement on #7A Brett!!

I've been wishing for a hole on that little peninsula since they installed the park. Can't wait to play it and (hopefully) not go in the water.  ::)

Brett,

Here's the map I made for Gary's Glow Tournament last year.  I still have the drawing and aerial map in it's original state.

I actually did not measure 7A or play it. I forgot before I left. I think i put 250 on the spreadsheet but it's probably 275 down hill possibly a little longer. It's definitely not over 300 feet. There is a short area to throw to for anyone that cannot carry both sets of water.

The other 3 I did measure.
13A 355
13B 300
13C 260

Do you really want Rec/JRs/women throwing over the tall junk on long 14? I believe its about 200 ft to the short tee. If you treat it like water it exceeds the recommendations for these divisions. I'm ust afraid there will be a handful of lost discs for people not making it.

Smaller arms can always opt to play it safe and throw to the left where the distance is much shorter.

Post by: can't putt on August 22, 2006, 11:44:48 AM
The weeds really taper back towards the left.  The distance to the short tee is about 200', but the distance across the weeds straight at the hole is around 150'.  There is a footpath through the weeds from the long tee to the fairway.  This path angles slightly left from the tee.  Following the path, the distance across is around 120'.

Another trick is to watch your disc land and then walk straight to it.  Those weeds are not matted like at Streamwood.  They won't eat too many discs.

Aurora is looking sweet! I forgot to mention that in my first post. Very fun course to play. They have all the cement tee pads completed for both short & long tees. Nice and BIG. They won't be done for the tournament but alternate pin positions are in the works. I also found out another course will be installed in North Aurora in the next year on a 35 acre site. I heard it is some nice land for disc golf. Can't wait!

Yeah, the course is looking sweet and the alternate pins will be amazing. Also in the talks is getting basket 16 elevated.

The ace pot was drained to nothing at Streamwood by those that played on Saturday. But the fine lower divisions started feeding the ace kitty the very next day.

I was out there this morning. It's nice seeing cement pads for both sets of tees. While I've wedged a couple of putters in the sides of the basket, this was the first time I've had this happen.(http://www.krupicka.org/discgolf/nubs.jpg)
There was also another player out taking pictures of the course. He said there is a new club out there starting. The website (not up yet) will be foxvalleymetro.com

Looking forwards to IOS#6.

They're good.
Quote803.13.B. Disc Entrapment Devices: In order to hole out, the thrower must release the disc and it must come to rest supported by the chains or within one of the entrapment sections. This includes a disc wedged into or hanging from the lower entrapment section but excludes a disc resting on top of, or hanging outside of, the upper entrapment section. The disc must also remain within the chains or entrapment sections until removed.

I have some questions concerning this event, i was gonna post in the new player forum but this board seems to be more active.  What can I expect as far as being a spectator?  Do many people come to just watch?  Can you follow certain players around or do you have to watch from a certain area? Also, I can't decide whether to participate in the Rec/beginner tournament, I just started playing last June, I only know one type of throw and only own a few discs, and I rarely par this course, but it is the course i play the most.  Do people who have just started and are as bad as me play :) ;)?  Or maybe I should just check it out, keep practicing and try next year.  I'd appreciate any info. you guys could provide for a beginner like me.

You can watch from anywhere so long as you follow ordinary golf etiquette.  Don't talk while people are throwing.  Don't be moving around in someone's line of sight while they are throwing.  We don't get a lot of spectators.  One of the guys in the pavillion can tell you where the pros are starting if you want to see the top Illinois pros play.

If you want to play Sunday definately play in the rec division, and think about playing trophy-only.  You can get $19 in value for your $19 non-member trophy-only entry fee if you ask for the "Throw Discraft" player pack.  Sunday is two rounds of 21 or 22 holes, whatever Brett announced, and it will take all day.

If you decide to play, tell the people in your group that you are a new player and hopefully they will help you out with the rules.  Also, be sure to attend the first-time player meeting that Brett does.  That will help a lot with tournament rules.

david gibson, a buddy from breckenridge, and i (and possibly some others) will be at aurora this saturday as well.  not sure about the 8:30 a.m. time for the first round (we have a big night planned tonight), but will definitely be there for a couple of rounds afterward.  drathe, mex, etc...  bring your game.

and to doug, ditto what mangler and bruce said.  come on out on saturday and watch the big boys, maybe pick up some new plastic and a rule book, then come back on sunday and show 'em how the locals do it.  welcome to the board.

I put in my Discraft order Friday.  It is a pretty simple order.  I'm getting enough ESP Pulses and Surges to last the rest of the year, and some of the new ESP First Run Crushes, Avengers and Preds.  I'll be able to do 12 Brass pricing on all the ESP which continues to be a really good deal especially for the first runs.  I'm getting some medium dryfit shirts for some medium volunteers and some large and XL dryfits for whomever.

I had a special request for some 2nd Time First Run Buzzzes or whatever they decided to call the new flat top Buzzz.  If you want one holler now.  I'll see what I can do for Brass pricing on those on Tuesday.

I'm getting just a couple of Spectras.  I want to throw them with Sidewinders to see how they compare to decide whether to include them in next years SuperColor mix.  If you wanted a Spectra, I'll have a couple, but they have a mandatory minimum price on those of $20.  Brass will work for those too.

Based on another thread, it looks like there's a stinging insect nest in the rough between the fairway and the creek on hole #6. Most likely it's below ground. If it can be found (without endangering ourselves), it would be good idea to mark it (or at the very least mention it at the player's meeting.)

IOS volunteers should not be poisoning bees without first checking with the park district.  Some parks are protective of their bees and get upset about poisons.

If you can't get #3 (the one that goes through the trees) by going straight at it...try this.

Throw a forehand Monster, Flick, or something similar that cuts right pretty fast. Don't go through the opening directly in front of you. Use the next ally; the one to your left. It looks like there are a lot of trees in the way after you hit that doorway, but it's deceiving.

I make it through, and close to the pin a lot, on the drive. I use a 175 Monster.

Righthanded. Forehanded. Throw it flat. The disc will do the rest.

I played that hole three times tonight. All were deuces. Didn't hit a tree. All ended up out in the open; close enough to birdie the hole. The third time I missed the opening; took it too far left (so it looked like it was headed toward teebox #2). But the Monster's dynamics brought it back. And gave me a good look for the deuce.

I'm making a DVD of the Aurora tournament next week. To not disturb anyone, I'll be shooting from behind the teebox. Although, that got me thinking about the progress of disc golf, especially in our area. And you may want to bring this up at your next club meeting.

Depending on how it looks, and how it goes, I was thinking about shooting all the IOS events next year (if your TD is good with that). If anyone has plans on buying a hard dive camera in the next half year, with two cameras, we could probably make a pretty professional looking DVD of all the 2007 IOS events. I have the software to put it all together, and an Everio GZ-MG70 camera.

But I don't know if the players would consider cameras a distraction, or see this as something positive. I don't need a player going Brad Hammock on me because he missed a putt.

Got out today & played 2 rounds. The course is looking great.

Played Hole #7A. To the basket it plays around 300. You have to throw about 265 to clear the water if you are trying to get a birdie. There is plenty of room deep & right. Short & left is bad news. There is a short zone to the right that you can throw to as well. There will be a drop zone.

The walk to #13A is pretty long. If you start on the alternate holes on that side of the park i'd drive over to the west entrance and park there.

All the alternates are marked with paint. Can't wait for the weekend.

Played 'em all this morning.  Started in the rain, and ended in a very light mist.  7A is sweet -- visually intimidating, but not as bad as it looks.  It is a long walk to 13A -- maybe a golf cart shuttle service?  :D  13A and 13B are nice holes.  Did you place that soccer goal across the 13B fairway, Brett?  There may be backups at 13C due to lost discs.  That grass is getting pretty long and thick.  Finally, the old (short) tee pads are all fine when wet, but most of the new (long) tee pads are quite slippery!

For Bruce or Jon:

How would you recommend this be shot. I know a lot of the players from the Aurora area who are playing. So I know they might not mind me positioning somewhere behind the basket (for drives). But maybe someone in their group might. So should I just ask as I go along, or do you have an idea as to where the camera would be best placed?

I'll send you the DVD within a week after the event. If you want to burn copies for the players who want one (up in your area).

P.S. A couple years ago, I used to gamble with some guys at Fairfield & Adler. They called me Skeletor (because I paint skulls on most of my discs). A guy named Jon drove a bomb on the final long hole at Fairfield, and took me for $40 once. I was just wondering if that was you.

Look at some footage on www.discgolftv.com. They do a pretty good job for an amateur crew. As long as you are not making distracting movements prior to the throw there is now reason you cannot move around and get shots from different angles.

Good deal. I've seen all that footage. Actually, I'm hoping someone hits an ace this weekend, so I can submit it to discgolftv.com.

I'll predict that either Rob Merkel or Adam Luxich come closest to an ace. So if anyone is in their group, I might be tagging along with your group for a few baskets.

When I take pictures and video at Women's Nationals I take the attitude that I am doing the players a service by promoting the sport and I stand where I need to in order to make the shot. I will also immediately move if the player indicates that I am in their way. I have only been waved off once at Women's Nationals.

As for your p.s., that was not me. I do not have a bomb in bag. ;)

Yes, the walk is very long. Hated to do it but I thought it was worth it for those 3 holes and I was not guranteed there would be no soccer going on that weekend or we would have had a nice par 4. I did not place the soccer goals there but I actually like the idea of having it there. A disc does fly thru the net but it's a pretty good obstacle. There could be a backup but that rough isn't too terrible. The rough on 17 to the right is much worse.

We will continue to offer the Throw Discraft Player Pack for this tournament.  As in the past it will be a D-Disc from the designated box and any other Discraft disc of your choice.  I will have all the new stuff in ESP including the brand new Torq.  While supplies last.

whats the torq?

The Torque is Discraft's newest midrange. It is supposed to fly farther than the Buzzz. It is not yet approved by the PDGA (so says Mark Ellis). It has a bead like the Wasp, but grips like a Buzzz. We got one in our player's pack at Am Nationals.

Brett, I'm sorry that I sounded critical.  I didn't mean to.  Given how the course is squeezed into the available acreage, I was wondering how you were going to manage the extra holes.  I'm impressed in the way that you did.  Should be fun!

I didn't think your post was critical. I'll be the first to complain about long walks but I figured i'd explain.

That 3rd Safari hole for Open seems great, especially for spectators. Good design as always Brett.

Now if we could only get EVERYONE in IL putting in a course to run the design by you first..... :confused3:

I'd have liked to see #9 tee to #10 hole as a safari.

I'm not quite envisioning where the route would be off the tee. I believe the pavillion would block the route to the long tee across the river. Would there be a short placement drive to the bridge then across?

Thanks for the comments Chris. I really would love a chance to design a top notch course in this area. I am tired of playing Par 2 golf every day.

I actually think the 1st 2 will be the best. I think 2 really good drives and a good 2nd shot can card a 3. The 3rd hole should be a fairly easy 3 as long as you make a good upshot. Hole 4 will be a tough birdie to get.

Now I'm questioning my memory. I'll have to look again on Sunday, but I think it would either be a well placed shot for the bridge gap or a huge anhyzer over the top.

I like 4's pad to 5's basket...or 6's pad to 4's basket. But yeah the first 2 holes are going to be fun to watch.

All players coming to Aurora:

I will have a donation box for discs to be donated to a youth mental health facility in Rock Island, Illinois. Any clean used or new discs in fairly good condition are welcome. Emphasis on beginner plastic would be appreciated. I'd like to send her 30 to 40 discs. Is there anyone from the Rock Island area going to be at the tournament in Aurora that would be willing to deliver the donated discs? Let me know so I can save on the shipping.

The following letter has been edited to remove personal information since it was sent to me in a private letter:

Dear Mr. Brakel,

I am writing as a youth rehabilitation specialist for a mental health facility
in Rock Island, IL.  Everyday I work with youth and young adults with mental
illnesses.  In an effort to get these youth out to exercise and socialize, I am
trying to get them involved in disc golf.  As a lover of the sport myself, I see
it as a way to increase self-esteem among young people who do not get chances
everyday to see how special they are.  I am wondering if you or anyone you know
can be contacted for a donation of disc's for this cause.  Please feel free to
contact me anytime at the above email or phone number.

Regards,

Youth Rehabilitation Specialist

Rock Island, IL

Would that be dx plastic? I can give them my Champion plastic. I'll be donating 5 or 6.. so maybe some of each? They're all in good shape and unmarked.

my guess would be no monsters & other sharp edged discs... rocs, aviars, other discs you may give to a beginner to learn on.

I think sharp edged are ok but more of the stable to under stable discs would be better.

Trophy discs are done.  Advanced First and Am Master First are on really nice throwing plastic, ESP Buzzzes.  I did all the Intermediate trophies on ESP Pulses.  Most of the rest are X Challengers.  I was using up random white plastic.

I'm going to have limited amounts of all the new ESP stuff for this one mainly the ESP Avenger and Crush.  I'll have lots of Pulses and Surges.  They are not ready to go retail with the Torq yet.  The plates for the hotstamp were delayed.

If you were feeling jealous that only Advanced and Advanced Master get ESP Buzzz trophy discs, come to Fairfield.  I now have a couple dozen white ESP Buzzzes for trophy discs.  I showed some of the Aurora trophy discs to Keith and Erich and they really liked them.

I think he was planning on giving his spot away to someone else, actually.  I could be wrong.

Somebody wanted me to bring an Innova Discatcher Sport to Aurora.  I can't find the e-mail right now.  This is the situation: I'll be bringing two Skillshots to Aurora, first come, first gone.  I will bring as many Discatcher Sports to Fairfield as I have pre-orders for next week when I'm doing my LAST Innova order.  I'll also order any other Innova special orders I get.

Speak now or forever hold your peace until next April.

Another guy aced one of the playoff holes, hole #3... didn't catch the name.  I think he was 3rd or 4th overall?  It was confusing with all the trophy only guys.  That ace didn't count towards the ace pool.  Nice job Michler taking a first place!

How tough are the alternate holes?  I'm kicking myself for having Cubs tickets for Sunday heh... I stopped by out there tonight at the end of the tournament for today and played a round from the shorts.  I was -3, which I certainly can't complain about for my first time at a course!  Maybe the alternates would have evened out my score, but man... even with rec only playing 1 round from the shorts... I actually had a chance of performing decently!  It figures ;)

What a great day at a great course! Thanks to everyone who came out.

I took about 175 pictures during the Pro Final Four. And this news just in...you heard it here first...Round Lake will be the LAST Pro Final Four EVER!!! If you love watching the pros play those crazy holes that Brett lays out then come on out to Fairfield next month because that will be the last one.

Thanks to all involved in directing/organizing this tournament!

Thanks also to all those good samaritans who kept returning my lost discs!  Lots of good Karma earned by these folk.

Finally a big shout out to the person who fished my '06 Prairie Open Spectra out of the lake!  That disc skipped off the beach about 15 feet into the lake.  My group couldn't spot it in the water.  I'd be interested in knowing how it was recovered!

Ratings come out tomorrow, he may already be bumped up. This past weekend's results won't make in until the winter update.

The PDGA needs to tweak when and how often ratings come out. I better schedule would be every March, May, July, September, December.

Jon is pretty sick with an intestinal bug.  I'm guessing he'll get to this by Thursday or Friday.

Meanwhile, PDGA ratings come out today.  The deadline to get TD reports in for tournaments to be included was three weeks ago, so Jon being sick is not why Aurora won't be included.  Three weeks ago the batteries went out on crystal ball and we could not find the magic recharger.

I'm going to try to stay awake long enough to get the scores up tomorrow.

I have a 3 DVD set of IOS #6 in Aurora for Bruce (Brakel), Brett (Comincioli), Kevin Heinrich & Nick Chernikovich. Do you all play the same league, where I could come give you the DVDs? Or what would be the best way to do that? (I can go to Round Lake...or I also see Buffalo Grove Doubles mentioned. I give guitar lessons a mile away from that course. So that would be convenient. Whatever works.)

I also wanted to post this because some players at the tournament were asking about buying a copy when it was done. I was told $5 a DVD was a fair price. But it turned into a 3 DVD set. So maybe $5 for 1. Or $10 for the set.  So this post doesn't get too long, you can send me a message if you are interested; and I'll reply with the information on each DVD.

Or if it's better for me to list that information here, someone just let me know.

Thanks,

Abe
