Baskets positions?
Title: Re: Post Thanksgiving Day Sanctioned Tournament
Post by: discglfr on October 31, 2006, 09:29:52 AM
I know everyone will for sure play the short tees the first round.  What we are going to do for the second round will be decided at at later date.

The reason is...if we have 40 intermediates show up (which I realize isn't likely) I don't want to commit to saying they are playing the long tees second round but if we had only 10 there maybe we'd see.  Advanced is really the division that will most likely be impacted.  As I said, they will for sure play shorts first round but if we have a huge turnout they might likely play shorts second round as well.

We're staring late(r) because it is a busy weekend but we also have to move things along swiftly due to the lack of daylight.

I hope this helps.

I will be thinking about pin placements in the next few days and likely get them posted on here as that develops.

Thanks,

Be aware that at some point the baskets will not be movable due to freezing.

Were moving baskets to the places that Uncle Joe wants for the Ice Bowl after Big Paw...  If it is warm enough, I'm sure we can move them the day before your event.

There's a big cross-country event there that day as well. (I only know that because my son and/or some of his friends may run in it.) hope they're not running through the course!?

probably not, although they may come close. Petrifying Springs park is adjacent to campus & it has a large XC course.

that xc course is on the other side of the campus, great land for a dg course...  but it is a world class xc course..  awesome skiing in the winter.

Ter, what days are you around Parkside?  are you still teaching?  If your not around I'll just mail the registration.

With the Am and Pro Howlers in the books I wanted to update this thread about the Cold Turkey event I have going on at Parkside.

It is Saturday, November 25th at UW Parkside .  It is a PDGA Sanctioned C-Tier and we already have the   PDGA list of pre-registered players (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6262) up.  Currently we have 4 divisions represented.  I will also host any other division that wants to attend assuming we get at least 3 participants in that division.  You want to see a Advanced Womens Senior Grandmasters division?  I'll offer it as long as there are 3 people that fit that criteria.

As always I ask you to please pre-register.  You can do so in 1 of 3 ways.

1)  Use my webstore:    Take Flight Today (http://www.takeflighttoday.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=114)

2)  Send a check for the correct amount to my home address.

3)  Hand it to me in person before Saturday, November 25th.

Any person that registers that day will incur the $10 day of registration fee.  Money collected from that day of fee will go towards the $200 needed to offset the cost of running the event at Parkside.

Any questions - contact myself as usual.  Terry@prodiscgolfer.com

Great question - I'll be keeping the ONLINE registration open until sometime on Friday night (11/24).  I'm not exactly sure what time but it will likely be until Friday night.

If anyone wishes to pay with a check via the mail service you may send your info and payment to:  Terry Miller | 14781 Hidden Creek Ct |
New Berlin, WI 53151.

Thanks

Terry,

This may be a stupid question, but I want to be clear.  On the TakeFlight site, it says that every Amatuer player gets a player pack.  Do you mean only the "Amatuer" division or any non-pro division?  Specifically, does the rec division get a player pack?

I think I'm going to be there either way, but I'd like to know for sure.

Thanks

Any non-Pro should typically get a player's pack. That's the way I understand it on his store.

Not a stupid question.  Terry did the old school thing of calling the intermediate division the amateur division.  Your confusion flows naturally from his.

Jay,

This is not a stupid question and I'm glad you asked.  Any NON-PRO division will receive a players pack.  That includes Jrs, Recs, Int, Adv, Adv Mast, etc.

The next question is ... do MOST people like the idea of receiving funny money which they can use towards a disc?  The advantage to this is ...

1)  You don't HAVE to use it towards a disc.  Instead a hat, towel, chair, etc
2)  You can keep it until the end of the event and use it with other funny money you might earn from the event.

Does this sound good to the majority?  It's how I typically do it but I'd like some feedback.
Title: Re: Post Thanksgiving Day Sanctioned Tournament
Post by: SIUFrolf on November 10, 2006, 02:26:57 PM
unless the disc in the player pack is a custom stamp for the tourney, I like being able to make my own choice on what to get instead of an overstocked disc that I may not throw or like. so, in short, I like the funny money idea.  I'm gettin excited to play this tourney, it'll be a nice "end of season" event before the snow falls.

Thanks for the feedback Kyle!

Make sure that you and everyone else you know gets registered for the event asap.  I know there are only 9 right now (which I just updated minutes ago) but I'm sure it is going to get pretty busy in the next 14 days!  The GMO this year had about 15 people signed up about 8 days before the event and ended with 168 total!  We are capping so don't delay.

Online reg or mailing it in is fine if you wish to secure your spot and avoid the $10 day of registration tax.

Hey Terry:

I hope to play if my leg isn't any worse than it feels today, so I should reg in the next week or so.

off topic, when is Dretzka going to be pulled? I was planning to go next Sat (18th) but if it's not going to be in it would be good to know - wanted to check out Dineen anyhow but it is a long trip from da big city...
Title: Re: Post Thanksgiving Day Sanctioned Tournament

Dretzka will likely stay in until after our early December event.  It will probably get pulled shortly after that.  It SHOULD be in next weekend wif you happen to come up.

If it were to get pulled between now and then I'm sure it would get posted on the newest GLDGC thread on the PDGA discussion board but again, it isn't planned until after the winter event there.

Thanks!

Ter

An update for this event:

At this point the event has 17 registrants.  As one can imagine, I'm expecting a huge flurry of registrations to come in during the next week.  Remember this, with online registration we have seen as many as 100 registrants sign up for an event with less than a week to go.  If you know you are coming please pre-register using one of the methods outlined below!

Right now we have 7 people from WI, 8 from IL, and 1 from MN.  Let's get pre-registered!

QuoteWith the Am and Pro Howlers in the books I wanted to update this thread about the Cold Turkey event I have going on at Parkside.

Ter,

Are the pins in place for the tournament now, or are you going to make some further changes?  Also, any idea whether there will be a round from the long (pro) tees?
Title: Re: Post Thanksgiving Day Sanctioned Tournament

Sergio might be able to chime in a little bit here.  He said he was going to help me with the pin locations and getting them moved.  Long tees will be decided on that day and they will be determined by how many total people we have and how many people in each division.  I can ALMOST promise that Intermediates will NOT play the long tees either round.  The real question is if the pros or advanced will play from the longs or not.

I think Sergio was going to try and get them moved this weekend?  Is that right Serg?

I need to publicly thank Sergio on here for all the help he's provided thus far!

I've played a few sanctioned events this year that some players in some divisions did not get their scores counted towards their rankings because there weren't enough people to calculate the proper numbers. I know that's one thing that I really enjoy about playing sanctioned events, so I would try and keep that in mind when selecting the different tees for different divisions.

Terry, the answer to your question is, even chimpanzees like funny money once they are tought how to operate the banana vending machine with it!  http://www.hartnell.edu/faculty/tcarbaja/powerpoint/Coon_PPT/Coon_08.ppt#26

Is your funny money good forever, or until sometime, or good only the day of the tournament?

A really good anti-counterfeiting thing that Peoria does and I used to do before I bought the brass, is spend the bucks for a notary seal embosser that says Lifetime Disc Sports on it.  Then you can make your funny money good forever and know it is genuine when it comes back.  It is expensive to put your logo on it but not so expensive to just have the words.

What Taylor said.

I'm still 50/50 on whether I'll be there but my bargaining position has been improving daily.  Jon, can I use the futon Friday night?  I could also grab a winter rated bag and camp in the van.  I know the good commando camping places near UWP!   ;D

Thanks for the feedback guys.

First off, I'll be keeping the funny money option.  I will likely be giving out $10 to each non professional player.  Due to the size of the event, time constraints, and weather, I'll likely NOT pull out all of my merchandise until the end of the day (sorry).  In a perfect world I'd have someone sit and watch the stuff all day with it on display but that's not going to happen since I plan to play.

Secondly, it looks like we should have more than enough 'gators' for us to split up the field and the tees.  It is very likely that the Intermediates will play shorts both rounds while I'll probably have the Advanced and Pros play the longs both rounds.  Again that is NOT OFFICIAL but it's just what I'm thinking.

I really hope to see even more people get registered soon!  I have received a handful of e-mails and phone calls regarding the event and I keep preaching the same thing - get online and get registered or get your check in the mail.  My address is 14781 Hidden Creek Ct, New Berlin, WI 53151 if you really want to snail mail it!

I hope to see all of you there!

BASKETS WILL BE IN THE TOURNAMENT PLACEMENTS TONIGHT.

I was out of town and didn't get a chance to move them this weekend. Terry is on the course as I write this entry. He will call me with any changes that he may want to do. With his permission, I'll post pin placements this evening.

See you guys on Saturday.

The weather looks good for this event. This should be a great time and most likely the last time to get points before the end of the year.  I would think that Worlds is going to be huge, so the more points the better.  It is also a nice chance to see all your fellow competitors one more time before the deep freeze sets in around here.

I'm about to pre-register online and I was trying to plot out my directions.  I've only been to the course once so please take a look at my plan and let me know if this will work or if there is a better way.

I'm going to be starting from the Woodfield Mall area (90-NW tollway, and Rt. 53)

I'm going to take Rt.53 to Lake Cook Rd to 94 North ---- or 90 East to 294 North (whichever is better)

From 94 I am going to exit at 12th St (is there an exit there?) and head East

From 12th I am going to Wood Rd and making a left, a left on Outerloop, and then turn in the first parking lot.

Please give me feedback,

Thanks!

12th Street is HWY E. HWY E is Exit 339. Wood Road will be about 5-6 miles from I94. You shouldn't have any problems.

I've driven it a couple of times (and I go to milwaukee all the time).

I would recommend 53 -> 90 E -> 294 N (merge to 94 N) -> exit on Exit 339 (highway E) (right turn onto this road) -> left onto wood st at stop sign -> follow it around (OBEY SPEED LIMIT - I always see someone pulled over) to the second entrance on left (outer loop), parking lot will be on left side.

In the past I've tried 53 -> Palatine Rd -> 94, but it didn't seem to go any faster.  I know you head further south when you're on 90... I guess listen to the traffic report the morning of to hear if 90 is backed up for any reason.

So, basically you've only changed holes 4 and 5 from the previous set pin positions.

Happy T-Day people!

Now it's getting serious :)

We are now at 63 or so but that doesn't include the 10 to 15 people that have said a)  "The check is in the mail"  b)  "I'll pay online as soon as I can" or c)  "I'll risk it and show up that day and pay the late fee".

Well, I honestly don't see any chance for 'day of' registration.  I'm unofficially over 75 right now.  That leaves only a dozen or so spots left.

Get online and get yourself in because I'm calling it right now - this one is gonna fill!

Here is the   list (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6262)  of pre-registered people.

Here is the  Take Flight Today website (http://www.takeflighttoday.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=114)  where you can get yourself signed up right now!

There were two rules questions in Men's Rec today.  I just wanted y'all to know that the little girl who was whupping you also got the rules right:

If you lose your drive in bounds you have one option.  Re-tee throwing three.  Any time you lose your disc in bounds you count that throw, add a penalty throw, and throw from where you threw from when you lost it.  Whoever said that that would be like a two throw penalty was correct, but it is also the rule.  Re-tee throwing three.

If you turn in a card that is incorrectly totalled, you get your true total plus two penalty throws if the TD catches it.  Some TDs go easy on the women and juniors, but True + 2 is the Ru'e.

Josh:  If my daughter Kira had been in Kelsey's shoes today, knowing it was your last chance to win in Men's Rec too, she would have found a way to come in second.  Too bad it was Kelsey and not Kira, but congratulations on shooting your way out of Men's Rec.

Was it Kira or Kelsey that played? The results page has Kelsey's name and Kira's PDGA #. Nice shooting (whichever of you kicked some booty).

It was Kelsey that actually competed.  I will have the results/pdga number fixed in a matter of minutes.  And yes, she kicked some booty!  I hope I didn't embarrass her too much when I announced how she whooped on everyone!  Maybe I could get her to wear a Lifetime Disc Sports polo like her sister?  Hmm

Kelsey may be bumped up to Intermediate with the next ratings update.  She played in a lot of two, three and four player divisions when she was playing Junior Girls and Women's Intermediate and did not really enjoy that.  You could pretty much pick the finishing order before anyone teed off.  So long as the local pro women's scene here or there consists of two or three women at any tournament, that doesn't really interest her much either.  She really enjoys playing against a lot of competitors and meeting [or beating] people she's never met [or bet] before.  So whoever said, "Get used to it -- she's not going anywhere," was right.  She plans on playing her way to the top of Men's Intermediate over the next few years, and then competing in Men's Advanced.

I think she is the first junior girl in the history of the PDGA to have won a sanctioned tournament in Men's Rec.  I checked three of the most likely four other junior girls from the last six years.  None of them won in Men's Rec although the Stroh girl came in second once.

Hey, Carla prized in Men's Rec too.

Terry should have about a dozen dyed Star discs that are objectively better than anything Jaybird is doing:
I got a nice compliment from Mr. Duvall today about these discs.  It is always scary to be noticed by any of the residents of Mount Olympus.  Similar feeling when it is Mr. Duvall.   ;D

Congrats to Steve Slater, with this tourney he broke the previous record for most sanctioned tournaments in one year.  This was #49.

I just wanted to come on here and THANK all of the player's that came to the event.  I normally send a shout out to all of the player's the pre-registered but in this case it was pretty much everyone!  We would not have been able to pull off 38 holes of golf with 95 people if we had to deal with registration on the morning of that event.  Thanks and I hope to see all of you at future LDS (Lifetime Disc Sports) events.
