Title: Umm, "New to Chicagoland" specific question...
Post by: frontman311 on November 17, 2006, 09:14:35 PM
I'm going to school downtown starting January...are there ANY courses reachable by CTA transportation alone??...as I have "free" unlimited use.

If not...any league regulars live downtown?  ;D

I am also pretty new here, but I don't think that any course is really reachable by CTA. You will also pretty much have to plan on an hour to get to any course that is 18 holes.

Where are you moving from and whereabouts are you living?

Edgebrook you can get to by train.  Spike would know which train.  The train stops a couple blocks from the course.

On the Metra, if Metra is included in your deal, the "Milwaukee District North Line"  has a stop in Libertyville reasonably close to Adler, and Round Lake about 2 miles from Fairfield, if you take the diagonal running road.

The Metra West Line stops in Bartlett, about 2 miles south of Shady Oaks in Streamwood and 1.5 miles north of the course in Bartlett.

Oh, this is cool:  the Metra station in Lombard is only about a mile and a half northwest from Madison Meadows.  I thought that was the Northwestern west line but Metra calls it the Union Pacific west line.

yo frontman.  i live in chicago (the portage park neighborhood on the NW side).  i'm just a few minutes from edgebrook (disc golf on a ball golf course with carts).

i'm actually going to league doubles in a few minutes at oakbrook.  if you catch this soon, i'll give you a ride there.  my buddy steve waters (m. cephalus) lives in ukranian village downtown, and we are travelin' partners for a lot of disc golf action.  he's in carolina this weekend for a tourney, or he'd probably head out to oakbrook with me today.  send me a pm or e-mail, we can exchange numbers and i'll fill you in on which courses are worth the time and effort to travel to.  my schedule is quite flexible (like gumby).

welcome to the city.

Thanks for the fast replies. I'm living @ Congress & Michigan. Is Edgebrook up in the winter? Seems like I should get out at least once a week during the winter and as much as possible when it warms up a litte. Thanks again, I'll drop by again closer to the time I'm moving (be there January 11th) and in the mean time I'll break out the maps and start looking at the places you've mentioned.

What's up all!  I'm new to the Chicago area and hail from the burbs of Detroit, MI.  I belonged to the Cass Crew Leagues in Northville and have the same user name on their fourm at cassbenton.com.  I live in uptown and I'm lookn for some leagues in the area.  If there are no leagues anywhere close to downtown then lets get some people together and rip some plastic.  The name is Joe, I'm 27 and I'm allways up for competing at something.  Catch you all on the flip side!

Joe, you're gonna be driving. Hope you have a car. Drop your zip code into the course locator on the PDGA site, or use this site to see where your closest courses are.

I got a car and I'm quite familiar with the pdga directory.  The only course I've played in this area is the fly 18 at edgebrook i think.  I'm not really down with driving more than 30 minutes for casual play but I'll make an hour and a half trip for a good tourny.  Are there any leagues that you guys know of within a 30 minute drive for me?  Weather is great today, huh?  Thinkn about rippen a few off lakeshore, time to pull out the portable, LOL.

The closest league is going to be Lombard. I'm not sure when that starts back up.

Don't think you're gonna find anything as good as Cass around here. If you're going somewhere though give me a ride!!! (please)

You have a long ride to find a good course. The best course in the Chicago area in my opinion is Mokena and it is inferior compared to most MI courses.

Chicagoland disc golf courses are so lame, the players coming back from the Cracked Plastic thought Coldbrook was a good course!

Well then, thanks for the info guys!  I might just have to get some people together over here and get an informal league going.  Maybe the fly eighteen just out of town at edgebrook?  If anyone is interested I can try to negotiate a deal for us.  Hit me up with a reply so I can see the interest.

Edgebrook already has leagues.  Although, I'm not sure when they start.  Jon?

Ask Steve Waters (M.Cephalus).  He runs the league.  They were on alternating saturdays and mondays during the summer, but I'm not sure what time of year it will start up.  It was a lot of fun, but not a huge turnout.  If I remember correctly it was $20 to enter, including the $15 just to play the course.  He also adds cash to the weekly payout.

The course is closed during the winter and they open seasonally, not by date. So, when it gets warm enough out and the course is dry enough they open it up.

To sum it up, if the ball golfers can play it you can too.

I don't know what you're taking about. I retired from disc golf three months ago. Actually, we will run the Saturday events again but most Mondays it was just Spike and me. The traffic is just too bad to get there with enough time to get in a round. We try to schedule it around local PDGA's so we'll have a better idea once the schedule 's are out.
