Another event!
Mark "The Shark" Peterson ran a singles winter event at Dretzka Park last year. Dretzka has already been pulled for the year so he decided to move it to the brand new Brown Deer Park!
After discussing it further we decided to make this a PDGA D-Tier so that the course can start getting official data. Please be very careful to mark the correct scores on the correct holes because we'll be doing hole by hole analysis when this is all said and done!
So...I'm acting as the official PDGA TD here but Mark is doing most of the event stuff. I will be handling ONLINE REGISTRATION (http://www.takeflighttoday.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=122) as well as taking mail in registrations. Feel free to mail your info into me if you wish to save yourself from the $5 processing fee. 14781 Hidden Creek Ct | New Berlin, WI 53151. The deadline for mail in registration will be Thursday, Dec 7th. If I do not receive it by that Thursday then I can make no promises about your spot in the event.
THIS EVENT WILL FILL UP at 72 PLAYERS!. Do not delay on getting your stuff in. I will almost for sure be hosting a similar event at Dineen sometime in the next month (I'm still looking for feedback regarding the exact date). We will sanction it so that PDGA points can be earned as well as course data! terry@prodiscgolfer.com if you have any questions!
There will be a $2 ace pool. There will also be a $3 course fee that will not be part of the payouts. Standard D Tier sanctioning fees apply. You do NOT need to be a current PDGA member to participate in this event but it would be a great time to sign up or renew.
You can check out the WI Disc Sports (http://widiscsports.com/) website for on online flyer or you'll be able to find one shortly on the GLDGC (http://www.gldgc.com) website as well. Both lead give you the same info. Or again you can find details on Take Flight Today (http://www.takeflighttoday.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=122)
Being a reflexively obedient type I did click to enlarge the snowman. Why? Why??? ;D
When is this event? What is D-tier?
^^ See title, it's December 9th. Wish I wasn't in missouri that weekend or else I would go! Hopefully the snow will melt in time to go play some courses out there.
Have fun all!
The event is Saturday, DECEMBER 9th at Brown Deer Park near Milwaukee, WI. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=brown+deer+park,+milwaukee,+wi&ie=UTF8&z=14&ll=43.156733,-87.946501&spn=0.028238,0.058365&om=1
D-Tier means it's still sanctioned but you do not have to be a current member to play. You still receive some PDGA points and Slater has a chance to further his record:) PDGA payout scales will be used and it will also count towards your ratings.

Pretty easy to get to off the interstate:
Take I-94W to 43N. Exit on Good Hope Road. Turn Left (west) on Good Hope Road. Follow Good Hope to Range Line Rd. Turn Right on Range Line. Park entrance will be on your left (turn left into park).
Tee #1 is hidden off the street. There is a picnic area that I could use as a landmark for you, but I don't know the area # ??? I'll be there this weekend so I'll try and remember specifics. I also plan to take a camera so I'll try and upload some pics.
How's the snow in Brown Deer? Just wondering how much it will get in the way.
We certainly got plenty of snow. I know some guys went out there yesterday and plenty more are going out today. We'll do everything we can to make sure the tee pads are completely clear for next weekend. Speaking of which, I would register for that asap because we're worried it's going to fill and we are going to turn people away like at the Cold Turkey event.
42 and sunny is the extended forecast and that's certainly some great winter golfing weather! Looking forward to one of the tougher and more challenging courses within 100 miles of Chicago!

We played leagues today at Bevier. Shoveled and salted the tees. First round was tough but after the effects of the salt took effect the tees were fine the second round. As long as salt is put down on concrete tee pads they should be fine for a tourney.
There aren't concrete pads at Brown Deer...only crushed stone. We were out there yesterday and tried to clean off the pads as best as possible. The pads are framed by two by fours above ground. It wasn't bad cleaning them off but you need to be careful you don't go over an edge.
We only lost 2 discs and we played as a "seven-some." It was a fun time (not the sevensome part) and I think we were only the second group to play yesterday morning. It was pretty easy to see where discs entered the snow because there were only one or two sets of footprints. A few people used ribbons wish made things easier. I think with some of the cold weather things will ice up a little and the discs may not go into the snow as much.
As a D-tier event, is it ok to have ribbon on your disc?

No. The TD would need to get special permission from what used to be the competition director or the Tour Manager, David Gentry.
There's a good chance that a lot of the snow might be melted.. better chance if the tournament was on a Sunday. Tuesday should be above freezing so look for lots of melting then. I don't know how much was poured out over that course, but I'm certainly hoping the melting continues!
In open areas snow was at least a foot deep. When you got into the woods it was a little deeper in places where the snow had drifted.

This would be a pretty good idea. I am sure there will still be plenty of snow. Of course, this could be a good opportunity for Terry to sell some plastic. ;D (Terry, I know you have been concerrned over message board innuendo- just joking here.) When we played at Bevier Sunday we searched long and hard for discs that had no ribbons. I was glad I had them. No ribbons along with the three minute rule would make for a frustrating day.
Good call! In fact, we should mandate that only WHITE discs can be thrown. Well, white or clear CE or something:) Anyway - I'm going to talk to the PDGA (again) today and actually remember to bring this up with them this time. Last week we briefly discussed something about handling the special snow conditions it's just a matter of exactly what that might be.
I'm not counting on too much snow disappearing during the week. We got a pretty substantial amount the other day and the cold weather isn't going to make it vanish this week. The course has been and probably will continue to get a bunch of play between now and then. Tracks and trails will be out there.
I spoke with Mark the Shark last night (the 'official' TD) and I think we agreed he is going to do vending with his stuff for the prizes but my stuff will be available for cash sales.
The real question is ... when should I host the first sanctioned event at Dineen (another new Am Worlds course) and when should I host the 3rd year of the Random Beaver Round Up? Suggestions?

Good call Sergio. I posted this information to the PDGA discussion board but I'll post it here as well:
A very hard working, dedicated individual named Gregg has taken it upon himself to do some awesome photography. He does this on his own time and does it for personal reasons as well as sharing with others. What a resource for Wisconsin, Disc Golf, the Am Worlds, (and me). Thanks Gregg!

Yummy pictures for all to devour! I received a few more registrations today so please get yourself signed up for this weekend if you're planning on coming.
Colored chalk, the kind u use for a chalk box... sprinkled on the disc, it leaves a trail into the snow that is easy to find.
huh. that's a good idea. how's the slip factor on that?
I'm sure you don't use that much, but I keep visualizing this image of an explosion of dust on every drive, like a musket exploding backwards or something ;D

We are going to have some special rules regarding the snow and lost discs for this event. In fact, it was ok'd yesterday by David Gentry of the PDGA. However, rather then me posting something that wasn't 100% accurate I am waiting on an 'official statement' from Dave Gentry.
Please hang tight. I looked into this a few days ago when all of the snow came and with the ratings and TD reports, it's just taking the PDGA a few extra days to reply. See you guys on Saturday!
Hey, thanks for getting your scores up right away and your TD report in right away after the last tournament. I'm kind of o.k. with this one getting in and Illinois States not! ;D
No problemo about the reports. I knew that would be at hot item with us being so close to a cutoff date. Plus, I like to get that stuff online and submitted so that I'm done with it and its out of site and out of mind.
On another day and time we'll have to talk about the girls not coming to Am Worlds here in Milwaukee. I really think that they should! I guess I should have made a contract with Kira about her appearances at my events :)

Does anyone know if this course is well marked and easy to follow? I'm thinking about going up there before the tournament. Serg, how much snow is up there?
You could always print out the map found here:

Gregg did a pretty good job of laying things out on there. You could also print out a few pages of the pictures for references too. The tee signs are 4x4 posts right now and they aren't ideal just yet. There is a good foot of snow up here.

The hole is hidden in the woods a little. There are brown tee sign posts at each tee pad with distances written on them. There are no signs on them but they are easy to spot. When you see these posts you know there is a tee pad.The course flows pretty well and you should be able to figure out the paths pretty easy. This will make more sense when you get there:
- After Hole 2 go across the street to Hole 3.
- After Hole 3 walk out of the woods to your right for Hole 4 (Hole 5's tee pad will be to your left after Hole 3. Make sure you go to the right for Hole 4).
- On Hole 13, the basket is to the right at about a 90 degree angle. You will see Hole 16's basket straight ahead. DON'T THROW TO THIS BASKET.
I recommend taking a look up the fairway at the baskets before throwing some of the holes. Sometimes people say, Oh there is the basket! and never really go look. TAKE A LOOK!
I don't know what the snow is like in Milwaukee anymore but not much has melted here. The roads are cleared off but there are still a number of inches on the course. Terry might be able to add to this.
thanks surge. you playing this saturday?

Dollar Store gifts for everyone so Serg can play one more tournament! Or, I put my money into the tournament and hope to win prizes...discs for everyone!

Any word yet on the special rules? Also, what is the status on the crushed gravel tees? Are they icy or has the snow been removed? Salt will knock down the ice on the tees even if they are crushed gravel. As cold as it has been, if they are getting play, I would think that they are very icy right now.
You guys asked for it and I'm providing it. Below is the official take on the PDGA Special Rules for this event. I cannot stress enough that this is a 'special case' that we were granted from Mr. Gentry. This is for this event ONLY and any other special requests always have to go through him. I am likely going to host a C-Tier at Dineen on December 30th and those rules may or may not apply at that time. By default they will NOT apply as they are a case by case thing. I am very pleased with Mr Gentry's decision and his willingness to work with us on this special case.
Here you go:
Disclaimer: This waiver is only good for the Brown Deer Wintertime Open on December 9th, 2006 in Milwaukee, WI. Any event desiring a similar waiver may request one by contacting the PDGA Tour Manger.
Waiver specifics: Due to significant snow accumulation the following conditions that deviate from the PDGA Official Rules of Disc Golf have been approved.
1) Players are permitted to affix ribbons to their discs to aid the group in the location of a throw. These ribbons are to be used solely for location purposes and any other purpose is prohibited.
2) The text of the Lost Disc rule in section 803.11B will be replaced by the following:
"A player whose disc is declared lost, shall receive one penalty throw. The approximate lie for the player's next shot shall be marked in-bounds nearest the spot where the disc was last seen, as agreed to by a majority of the group or an official."
David Gentry
PDGA Tour Manager
Regarding the ribbon & the 2-mter rule (if in effect), are you still penalized if the ribbon is what is keeping the disc above 2 meters?
Ha,
Good question. I would have to ask about that one! However...for sake of argument and simplicity, we'll play no two meter rule at this event!
Thanks,
Where do you get these ribbons, and how do you attach them to the discs?

You can go to Michaels or Walmart or any drug/deparment store and get some very narrow ribbon. Get some good clear packing tape. I think most people tape them to the bottom of the disc right in the center. I think the lengths are typically 16" to 18". I think some may tape to the top of the disc. I don't think that it changes the flight characteristics at all.

That is, unless part of the ribbon wraps around a finger prior to throwing! (Happened to me last year, LOL)

If you have enough discs that you can semi-permanently ribbonize them for the season, household Goop is much better than tape. Tape will pop off in really cold conditions. The goop you can peel off at the end of the season, but it is very strong.

It looks like it is going to be cold and windy, I think I am just going to local leages this weekend.
Milwaukee Forecast:
Today: Mostly sunny. Cold. High 26F. Winds SW at 15 to 25 mph.
Tonight: Mainly clear. Low 21F. Winds SW at 15 to 25 mph.
Saturday: Sunny skies. High 39F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph.
Looks Good to me.
It's supposed to be 42 degrees tomorrow.
Ribbon and Tape:
We usually use about 2 ft. of ribbon. It also depends on the depth of the snow. The ribbon we have is about fairly narrow. Someone said red and blue are easiest to see in the snow. Clear duct tape works better than the packaging tape. It's a little more adhesive. Bruce is right about the goop. A couple people here use that and it works well.
Note for next year: buy the ribbon when it goes to 75% off after Christmas. You'll have plenty for yourself and others.
I heard 40's temps also.
I don't play much disc golf these days (in fact on a fraction since starting my own DISC GOLF company 2 years ago) but I think I'm getting dragged out to the course today! I'll try to get back on here this afternoon or tonight and give an update.
The gravel / crushed stone tees are practically like concrete right now because of the cold. We'll check the snow conditions and everything else. This course is going to play HARD but the trophies are super sweet. I'll be closing the online registration later on tonight.
I did receive a bunch of cool LDS discs yesterday. Star Tee Rex, Star Wraiths, Pro Wraiths, DX Wraiths, as well as stock stamped Star Sharks and 2007 Pro Worlds CFR Wraiths.
I hope you all enjoy the special rules. We'll see how they play out and see if they are worth requesting for any future events.

Make it out there today?
Yeah,
I got out today! I even had a good time - imagine that. Tees are looking VERY good. They are NOT slick and they are ready for action.
Both Mike Schwieger and I had a few bad holes and we ended up both shooting +7 (61). Looking forward to a great time tomorrow! Conditions are about as they can be out there.

So what did everyone think of the course, any really special holes that one needs to watch out for? Interested to hear the results and thoughts. Also will the tees be concrete for worlds?

Check out PDGA.com for the results. My perspective: Holes 1 and 2 with the long pin placements are very tough and very fun. I believe that a lefty has an advantage on hole 1. Hole 2 has OB on the left and woods on the right, with the long pin placement it is a true par 3. Hole 3 would be a deuce hole for most pros but a fun hole. Hole 4 can be a deuce hole but if you're not careful you can get an easy 5. Holes 5 through 12 are through the woods none are easy but they all have routes to the basket, not too narrow but when it gets green lookout. Hole 13 is also through the woods, a nice righty hyzer will get you within putting range. 14 is around 625' with the last 90' up hill among some oak trees, very nice hole. 15 is a righty hyzer down hill. Maybe the easiest hole on the course. Hole 16 is 720' with woods all along the right side of the fairway and then the last 100' there are bushes on both sides of the fairway. It isn't too tight but the rough is very thick and again, once it is green you will have a hard time just finding your disc. 17 is about 260'-275' with a low ceiling on the right hand side. 18 is pretty much a straight shot, but there is OB on the left with a road, and if you over throw the hole you can end up in a creek.
Overall a very fun course, and by no means easy. It's just my opinion, but once the concrete tee pads have been installed I think it will be the best within 100 miles of Chicago.
Fantastic, thanks for posting that Tom. It was just too cold and snowy for me to play last weekend. I'll have to get out there on some other day.
I'm going to continue to try and work with the PDGA and Chuck Kennedy about some statistical analysis of the scores from this weekend. Some holes played tougher than I expected and a couple played easier. All great stuff for Am Worlds preparations. We'll continue to test various pin placements as more events develop. Also, weather will certainly have some impact on the scores. Footing might be worse now but full foliage will be insane out there. In the fall the leaves really make it difficult too.
Anyway - that all leads to why we are at Dineen on December 30th. The Dineen course is 10 times more FORGIVING. It is still challenging but it is far more forgiving.
