Title: Arcade Stuff
Post by: Bruce Brakel on December 09, 2006, 10:22:52 PM
Might as well have a topic for arcade stuff.

So, Mirth, can you do anything cool with the arcade, like have it automatically sort the games by most played in the last 72 hours or anything?

We need a disc golf game in the arcade!

Not sure on the arcade bruce. I can see various stats but dunno about what you're looking for.

Jon - I agree!

Do you have control over what's in the arcade or did the games come with the software?

From what I know of this forum software, the games come pretty standard with it, but there are lots of games out there that can be added to it pretty easily as well.

The mod came without games but I added all the ones you see there. I assume there are a bunch more out there.

Hey Mirth,
For some reason the game Plasmanaut v2 isn't accepting scores now for the leaderboard.  It was before!  I just scored a decently modest 47... enough to put me in 1st... and it still has me marked at 0.  It gives an error after you click submit.  It redirects me to http://discontinuum.org/forums/index.php?action=arcade for the url and gives the error of "Invalid request variable."

Any help?  I've tried both popup mode and in the standard window mode.

grr. wonder why.  I tried both at work and at home and neither work.  I tried in IE6 SP2 at work and IE6 SP1 at home.  I also tried FireFox at home.  i tried playing from my favorites and not from my favorites.  Maybe it doesn't like that I have it in my favorites :P

I was having the same problem with Plasmanaut 2 but only after the first level.  If you don't complete the first level, it will submit your score.

yes, same with Amira.  if you beat the game (score =45), then it will not submit that score.

On the Plumber game I keep dying at 12th level even though I have a properly connected pipeline with more than 12 pipe pieces in it.  The rules offer no clue as to what other criteria might be required to qualify for a properly qualified pipe.

Anybody know?

I used the drain to the right and it worked fine.

Post by: Bruce Brakel on December 29, 2006, 12:29:24 PM
I figured that out eventually.  On levels 12 and 14-18 you have to use the drain that works.  I made a list but then the list turned out to be no good.  Being dyslexic, sometimes the right drain is on the left.

O.k., I'm now the champion of six games.  I need someone to bump off Mukukenow because he and I are tied at six.  I'll see if I can do my own dirty work by winning back radial snake

swanny taking my easter eggs and poole taking my cheetah race is just really annoying.  now i guess i'll have to take back my seconds of madness from schimo so i can get some breathing room.

I like Mumu. Mahjong, Jewels, Quix, and Znax. I play a few others, but these are my favorites for passing time :)

I like Seconds of Madness even if it does drive me up the wall when I think I'm going well and all of a sudden I whack into 5 million things.  I agree with Mumu and Mahjong.  QWERTY is the best, but unfortunately can't track you scores on it here.

Mumu looks like a fun game but there are too many shades of blue and tan that look the same to me.  Quix has some confusing colors too.

Is there any strategy to Znax or is it just click on rectangles as quickly as possible?  Is there any value in going for full board four corner squares?

I found out tonight that if you complete all ten levels of Ultimate Billiards and try to post the score you get an error message.  So if you get that far, scratch with one ball left.

mahjong all the way, easily my fav...
now that i regained the lead, feel i can complain  ;)

i play several other mahjong programs, and it seems this one has some bad programming. lots of rediculously bad deals, like 4 of the same tile in the top center making a reshuffle necessary. in most of my other programs i generally have about a 30% win ratio, but this one seems like 5%...

ill still vie for the title of discontinuum mahjong master, but maybe we could get another version of mahjong?^^

anyone else or is it just me?

This Mahjong deals lots of unwinnable games.  Some are obvious like the capstone sitting on its three matchers and some are not so obvious.

Arcade's on hiatus. Had to uninstall it because of issues with the message board. Trying to find something that integrates into the whole site now.

Apparently Grillenberger Pacman (which is what I think you were playing) isn't exactly supported by this version of the arcade. That game has been removed.

There is another pacman in there tho, so have at it!

I hate to complain and sound like an ingrate after all the work you've done Mirth, so I'll just throw this out there.

The new arcade records all scores rather than replacing your old best score with a new one. Maybe this is preferable, I just wonder if the high score table will get unwieldy?  Or do you have a limit set as to the number of high scores it will display?  Just my two cents.

Thanks for getting the arcade up and running again.  I actually missed it...though I'm embarassed to admit it.

just out of curiosity, would it be worthwhile to look into reformatting how the list of games you're the champion of were resorted so that it doesn't make your sig huge?  Spread them out horizontally instead of vertically?  I'm not sure if it was intentional that way or not.

Need to go reclaim my mumu title...

One other teeny tiny thing, the old arcade remembered the last page you were on and took you to that page when you entered the arcade.  The new arcade always takes you to page one.  Saves me a click since most of the games I play are on the same page.

Mirth,

No biggie, but I get this error trying to submit my score on Plasmanaut v2.  Not every time, but more than once.

Illegal variable _files or _env or _get or _post or _cookie or _server or _session or globals passed to script.
Title: Re: Arcade Stuff
Post by: stpitner on March 29, 2007, 01:02:35 PM
I think the error you're seeing happens once you get to a certain level in that game.  Any scores below a certain point it will submit, but anything above it chokes.  Maybe there's anothere comment about it in this thread or a different one?

Dang.  Now that you mention it, that does sound familiar.  But this is the first time I ever played that game.

Ok.  Never mind.  "Known issue"

If you want to compete in mahjong you'll need a doubles partner.  Kelsey and I teamed up and broke the Three Minute Mahjong barrier.   ;D

I had a really good score on Mahjong before the Arcade had that hiccup a few months back. I'll have to see how I can do against the Brakel tandem!

The current Mahjong high score was singles.  I may have said so in the comments.  I got an easy layout and just clicked continuously.

Right now I'm trying to push the Otello high score way high.  I have a game open at work and I'm going to play it for about an hour a day until I make a dumb move.  I can only score about 1200 points per hour, but with some concentration I should be able to get the score up in the 10,000 range by sometime next week.
Title: Re: Arcade Stuff

It seems I'm only good for 2 or 3 thousand points at Otello before I make a dumb mistake.

I made it my Labor Day goal to take Radial Snake away from Brett!   >:D  Mission accomplished.

I've figured out some strategy for Jewels.  Maybe i can get the high score there before the end of the week.

I pushed Otello up to 4000 but had to go to bed.  Better to take the score than have the computer reboot overnight on a power fluctuation or something.

I have an Otello game going right now where I'm at 2,500.  I've made two dumb mistakes but survived both times.  I've figured out a successful opening for the one configuration where you always lose, that one where the stones are in the corner of the inner box and you have to give the computer a wall stone on the first move.  The successful move is counter-intuitive because you have to count on the program making the wrong next move every time.  But it does!

These are my two big mistakes that stop me from playing forever:

1. Aiming for the minimize button and hitting the x by accident.
2. Navigating away from the page instead of opening a new window.

I'm serious.  Other than that, I'm pretty much unbeatable at Otello with this lame program.  It would be so easy to program a better AI for this game too.

My Ultimate Billiards score was based on nearly running the table on every screen.  If you play a good game in Ultimate Billiards remember:  you have to scratch on Level 10 with one black ball left on the table.  If you sink all ten balls on level 10 your score cannot be recorded.

I really wanted to put up a 10,000 score on Otello.  I made a dumb mistake and died just short of 9000.  I'll probably be done playing Otello for another year or so, unless someone decides to beat my score.

If you like Mumu you might also like Combine on Discgolfersr.us.  The games are under the drop down tab for Media.  I have the high score by default right now, but I cannot tell the yellow from the green, and the game begins with yellow and green, so I'm sure 8,000 is nothing.

Master pool is one of the better pool flash games i've played.  The dimensions of the table, pockets and balls are right.  The balls roll -- good graphics there.  And the programmers got one thing right I've never seen right in a computer pool game:  soft corners on the side pockets.  In real pool the ball can be sitting up against the outside corner of the side pocket and if you hit it hard you can push it right past the felt into the pocket.  In most computer pool, that corner does not give to let the ball through.  Another interesting thing is it is possible for the ball to leave the table.  Most computer pool games won't let the any balls go airborn.  All it lacks is english.  Hammerhead pool was really good for the english.

I was going to play a stupid computer game or two, but the arcade seems to be broken.  That, or my computer is broken.  Anyone know which?  I cannot get any of the games to work.
