Someone asked if this event would be recorded; it will be. So if any aces are captured, they will be submitted to discgolftv.com. And DVDs of the event will be available to anyone who wants one. The club picks up the cost on that.

I'll post more information concerning that later... (hopefully on a Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club website.)  :spam4:

sorry guys, I found out about the Big Chill after I had set the date with the Ice Bowl coordinators. I was figuring that with no football it would be a great weekend for golf. I know this doesn't help, Neal, but at least the ams can come and play both if they wish. It is so hard to find weekends that do not conflict with something else that is in driving distance. There is always so much going on now. It is like every time you turn around, someone is running a tourney somewhere around. It is a great thing, but at the same time very difficult to cater to everyone's/ wants at the same time.
I'll know better next year, though. I want to watch some of the guys at the Big Chill play!

Both rounds will be from the short tees

As for lunch, there is still a debate going on with this. I am awaiting the response from some possible food sponsors for the tourney, so it sould vary depending on what kind of bones I get thrown my way, I should know more by the end of next week. I have requests out for italian beef sanwiches, sub sandwiches, and pizza at this time. I am also trying to talk the members of the Fox Metro DGC to make and bring in some chili as well. As for drinks, let me know what you want. I was thinking coffee, soda and water.

I know that it will probably be cold out, but when playing in a tournament, I've noticed a lot of players (at least around here) don't drink a whole lot of pop.  I see a lot more water, gatorade, powerade, that sort of thing.  Hot chocolate maybe?

Disc Golf Magazine runs a photo contest every year. Some shops that sell discs, carry this magazine. The photo that reads "Honorable Mention: Abelardo Arenas Naperville, Illinois" is from me. The disc in that picture is one of my painted Misfits discs.  :headbang:

I was already doing one of these discs for the Ice Bowl, to be given away as a prize. So the timing was pretty good. So a similar disc to the one in the picture will be given away at the Ice Bowl.

News Flash!!!!!!

There will only be 18 holes with a few regular holes taken out due to extreme water hazards that are normally not there and a few will be added to make up the remaining 18. Holes 3, 17, and 18 will not be played. Rather, there will be 2 extra holes and 17 will become a safari from 17 short tee to 18's basket. Unless for some act of God, all the water goes away between now and next weekend.

By next weekend, it might just be frozen. That would make for some major skip shots.

The club is preparing the course a week before the Ice Bowl. And you wouldn't want to leave something like that undetermined, for the players.
Title: Re: Ice Bowl in Aurora this January 27th
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on January 11, 2007, 08:48:05 PM
I am currently more concerned about the water as I do not want players that throw their drives into the water, which is quite a large amount of the fairways and greens on these holes, to have their feet get wet and come down with some type of frostbite or hypothermia. This is the reasoning for the alternate pins at this time.

However, if the weather remains cold as it is supposed to become there is some merit to using the ice as a further obstacle on these holes. I will be definately considering this as well. It may come own to a decision a few days before the tournament itself.

Let me know what any of you think. I would be more than willing to take any suggestions. I sure could use some, I have begun to run out of ideas!
Title: Re: Ice Bowl in Aurora this January 27th
Post by: stpitner on January 12, 2007, 08:02:08 AM
I think even with the ice you may want to stay away from it because even if you have someone sign a waiver saying they wouldn't sue should injury happen... it's always nice to keep everyone out of harms way.  I would also imagine that even with a week's amount of time it wouldn't be enough to make the ice thick enough for everyone to walk on, and then you still run into the problem of people breaking through the ice and getting their feet really wet.

hole 17's tee to 18's basket definitely sounds doable.

I was just discussing this with someone and they had the same thoughts. Better to be safe than sorry. As I was out marking the putting circles today, I did notice that the water on three was down about five feet, so this hole may end up being doable for the tourney, the others do not look too promising.

As of today, lunch will be including:

sandwiches

baked beans

water
coffee
gatorade

P.S. If you want a DVD of the Ice Bowl, send me a quick message with your name. I can always message you back when they are done. Fox Valley Metro is paying for it. It will probably be a double DVD set.

True that ice would be dangerous, but I played the course last week and #17 long was a blast!  My sidearm took two huge skips towards the basket, and I thought I was in great shape.  After getting my stuff together I started walking towards the right side of the ice so I could get to the basket easier.  But was very surprised to see my Wraith skipping and sliding back towards the left side of the ice about 10 seconds later!  And I deuced #3 because of the ice as it slid to the basket.  Oh well, I know you need to be safe.
Anyone up for a pick-up round from the long's during lunch?
BTW, don't do The Big Chill!  Barry's gonna win anyway (odds) and you're not doing anything for charity!  Come to A-town.

I don't know if you got the email from Adam Camp about the media release, but they have gotten the word out to 7 local papers and a few tv stations as well. As for a follow up, I will definately be letting Adam know the results as well as final #'s on donations as well ( both monetary and food).

Also, if anyone has any gently used clothes they would like to get rid of them with you as well. Hesed House would live to have them.

Thanks! Although I have to thank my contacts at the Fox Valley Park District for the blurb. They did all the work for the media release. I am hoping there will be more local coverage in the next week or so.

This tournament has been more work than I thought it would be, but also worth all the time as well. It definately makes me appreciate all the work the directors have done at the previous tournemants I have been to.

Rock on :)

I was at the Disc Golf Alley (IDGETTS) club meeting over the weekend, and there were about 5-8 people there that raised their hand saying that they were going to be at the event (don't think any are preregistered), so there, at least now you know there will be a minimum of twice as many people ;)

Should be fun!  My pre-reg goes out tomorrow and I just have to HOPE and PRAY that my back holds up for 36 holes.

My brain is faster than my fingers.
Bad news though. I cannot get the Disccatcher basket delivered to me in time for the tourney, so there is still a possibility that there may be no throw for a pole hole. Discndat said that they do not offer 2 day delivery on baskets unless I want to pay an extra $80 in shipping. Forget that noise!

With the cold weahter, the water on holes 3, 17, and 18 are no longer a factor. However, ice now is. Having been to the course over the past few days and with the weather forcast from noe till Sat, I am going to be playing all 18 holes with one extra hole for a total of 19 holes. The extra hole is about 270 with OB on the left and woods on the right of a rather tight fairway with a decline of about 6 feet from tee to basket.

sorry, I have a blue discatcher traveler (used lightly for setting up for display at a previous tournament), but no discatcher sport, which I think is what you're looking for.

Alright Abe I will try a little harder for you to spell better.
And by the way it is Red Stripe, not Corona! ;D

I am currently thinking of getting my M14 out of the garage and putting that one up for the prize. Not the best basket in the world, but you can still putt at it in your back yard!

I apoligise in advance for this newbie question, but what rules are there around the Mulligans you buy?

Is there a limit to how many you can use on a hole, or number of repeat mulligans in a row?  Will they be counted up un the score card till it reaches the purchased limit or down from how many purchased?

Thanks,
Oz Disc Dude

I have a chainstar I can bring out if you need a basket for a temp. hole.

Regarding the throw for pole hole, you could have the throw be for a voucher and then have the unit shipped direct to the winner.  Ship it with delivery confirmation so you are protected.

Probably a silly question, but have you arranged for the restrooms to be opened?  Or maybe a Porta-let?  How 'bout trash cans?

It seems like you guys are doing an awesome job on this, so you probably have those bases covered as well.

Mark,

Mulligans will work as follows:
you will be given a voucher for each mulligan purchased. When you wish to use one, (may be used on any throw- drive, up, or putt) inform your group and then hand it to the person with the scorecard. The mulligan used must be the shot taken, even if your original throw is better. I will be going over this with each person who purchases a mulligan as well.

The water is turned off in the winter at the shelter so the restrooms will not be open, but a port-o-let will be on site as well as garbage cans and picnic tables and a nice cozy fire to warm you up in between rounds.

I am still hoping to get a basket out for the tourney, I spoke with one of the vendors that will be there and he is going to try to get a basket there for me. If not, the voucher sounds great. Thanks for the idea ^_^

About 2-1/2 to 3 inches on the ground.  I haven't been there in about a week, but I suspect the snow is pretty well beaten down by now.

ditto on the question.  I was out at Oak Brook today and didn't see some ice spots on the tee for hole 5 (otherwise they are pretty much covered with about an inch of snow), and I slipped on my drive.  I didn't fall down, but it tweaked my knee just a touch.  Definitely don't want to see anyone get hurt on Saturday!

They will be, if they aren't already. I'll be out there later this afternoon, and tomorrow.

Also: I will be recording the tournament all day Saturday. If you are playing in a group ahead or behind the camera, and I'm unintentionally in your line of sight, just call out that you are shooting.

With fairways zigzagging back and forth, I might not realize my position in relation to your shot. Eventhough I try to keep it in mind all the time.

Abe, you know that even though is 2 words right? not one.

Anyways I got ahold of Eric Doty of www.ceroccollector.com and we are getting the basket after all. So good news!!!

The tee pads are all clear and there is a putting circle for the front nine as it stands right now. Hopefully I will be able to get out there tomorrow and finish the other 10 holes.

I would recommend something waterproof. With the warm weather, the snow melted pretty good and your feet will get wet.
I am pretty psyched myself. My first tourney and so much anticipation with it.Was out today marking the putting circles and getting everything ready to go.

There will be a nice warm fire going when you show up to keep you toasty b4 the round so we should be all good.

Can't wait ;D

Title: Re: Ice Bowl in Aurora this January 27th

a few dpots of snow where drifts have caused depth to be about 4-6 inches, other spots with a covering and then others with none at all. Mostly just a covering.

First tourney I have ever run so do not know how many mulligans will be bought. Just trying to make $ for the food pantry.

i had a great time won 4 CTP's and (played ADV) was paired with marty sitko second round, we lit it up with a -16 for 19 holes. We were tied for first at that point and had to play off. I lost the win and trophy in the playoff but it was still really fun.

The event was run VERY well considering it was the first event put on by the Fox Valley disc golf club.  Congrats guys!  I only have one critique/comment/constructive criticism, and I know there were a lot of people that felt similarly... While the lunch time events were fun, the time in between rounds went really long given the wind and coldness.  If it was summer-time I wouldn't have minded one bit, but I know it was tough for you Aaron to handle the incoming scorecards, get people going with lunch, then coordinate the $1 throw for pole and running the putting contest after that.  I would probably recommend just having the lunch throughout the break and running the side events simultaneously.  The fire helped keep us from completely getting frozen while we waited for round 2, so thanks for getting that going!  The tarps over the side of the pavilion to block the wind was an EXCELLENT idea!

Awesome, awesome event.

On a more personal note, I am glad you all have said that the Ice Bowl went well. I was so nervous about this and did not know how to really run an event except from what I have seen as a player. I do agree that next time I should have lunch at the same time as the games, although I did want to give everyone a chance to warm up a little after their found. I did not think that by stopping play, you would cool down. Something to remember for next year's event!

I could not have run the event without the help of Gary Lewis and Dave Van DeLoo of the Flying Fortress though. They really hepled get the scores put together and kept everything running smooth before each round. Thank you guys!

I will get scores posted up some time later today. Lots of info to put together and get recorded.

Also, look in Monday's Beacon Newspaper. A photographer was at the tourney taking pictures and stated that there may be an article in Monday's paper.

If anyone has any suggestions for the future, let me know!!

Great event Aaron and every one that helped put it together!  I was really impressed with the amount of support everyone gave.

I think I win the dumbass award of the day though.  I realized after my last hole that I had a mulligan in my pocket that I totally forgot about.  When all the scores were posted I saw that I could have tied for 3rd with one less throw instead of 7th  ::)

I was just out there to have fun so I'm not losing any sleep over it plus I did win this sweet 2005 special blend CE ROC the first round (1/795)

The Ice Bowl DVDs will be mailed out tomorrow (Friday). I'll also be making a double DVD set of the Discontinuum Club Challenge at Jericho Lake. So I'll bring some sets of the Ice Bowl DVDs that day. If you want a set (totally free), just ask. I'll be the person working the camera. Or just ask any Esquivel. And he'll get one for you.

I also have a 3 DVD set of IOS #6. That's available too ( it's free, too). Just send me a message first, so I know how many to bring.

The Ice Bowl DVDs will also be given to everyone at the club meeting this Tuesday. (It was postponed last Tuesday due to snow). So you can pick them up there too.

And maybe starting next month (...or definately by April) some of us will be playing nightgolf after each meeting. So, you're welcome to come out for that too.

For those who got the Ice Bowl DVDs, I forgot to mention that each DVD has around 20 chapters. Each hole is indexed (has its own chapter). So you can hit next on your remote, and it will take you to the next hole.

The other segments are also indexed.

(And Josh, the IOS #6 DVDs also have chapters.)

I just played Jericho Lake this morning for the first time since the ice bowl.  I was surprised to find hole sponsorship signs, putting contest flags, and flags marking the path to and from the temp. hole still out there.  I removed the signs and flags, but may have missed a couple due to the snow.  I had nothing with me to pull the roofing nails from tee sign posts, so I left those for now.  Aaron, do you want me to get these back to you or are they trash?

We were going to start getting the course ready for the club challenge next week. So, the thinking was that there was no harm in leaving the sponsorship signs up till then. And the flags, we were still putting from. Playing Around The World.

But no big deal, they were all coming down in a week anyway. I don't know if Aaron wants those or not. He can reply to that. But thanks for taking care of the course.
