Title: Greater Chicago Area & Illinois Disc Golf Google Map
Post by: can't putt on December 20, 2006, 07:08:29 AM
Greater Chicago Area & Illinois Disc Golf Google Map (http://www.amctrl.com/cgi-bin/DiscGolfPage.cgi)

This is version 2, authored by my oldest son, Dan.

What's new?

If you view this map, please contribute by rating the courses you have played.  This is not a detailed rating but just a 0-5 stars thing to give folks a quick impression of the course.  There is no place for comments, but you can leave comments on the various linked discussion pages.  Thanks.

For best results, view the page using Opera (http://"http://www.opera.com") or Firefox 2.0 (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/).  You can use IE, but alternate browsers are better.  ;)

Techie Details:
Code was developed using the Ruby (http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/) programming language.
Google Map markers, course info, and course lists are generated by javascript, which is in turn generated from Ruby, from a MySQL database.
A private administrators page makes adding, editing, and deleting courses both quick and easy.
Rating stars are generated by drawing a filled rectangle under a .gif with transparent stars.  This allows a displayed average rating resolution of 1 pixel (1%).

A big thank you to everyone who has offered suggestions.  Special thanks to Adoni for his most excellent course maps!

This map is sweet.  Thanks to you and your son for all the hard work.  And thanks to those who volunteered information and suggestions.

Hi all.

If in playing around you notice any problems with the functionality of the site, both cosmetic and otherwise, please let me know.  I'm going to be incorporating the code from the site into a larger project and would like to smash as many bugs as possible right away.  At the moment, I know that the rounded corners get messed up in IE and that sometimes the scrollbar is waaaaaaaaaay to long, but if anything else comes up, drop me a line at krasinsk@grinnell.edu.

Peace
-DK

Added St. Louis and Davenport/Bettendorf courses.  Looks like St. Louis is worth a road trip!

I played two courses down there just before the new year. Cool setups, multiple basket placements, good use of the elements and VERY cool people. Check out www.stldiscgolf.com for their club website.

I just realized there was a problem with St. Louis and Davenport courses accepting ratings.  Should be OK now.

While on spring break Dan had a chance to update the map.  Now included is the ability to link to an individual course marker.  To find the link for a specific marker, click "Display Permalink" on the info box for that marker (course).  You can then copy and paste the link.  For example, these are the links to the Illinois Tour courses:
