The 2007 Mayhem Open is on the books and ready to Rock and Roll. We have made the event a two-day PDGA B Tier event. Rec, Junior and Intermediate will all play Saturday May 5th and all Pro and Advanced players will play on Sunday May 6th.
We will be adding 4 holes to the layout to bring the total to 22 holes. Terry Miller and Lifetime Disc Sports will be the exclusive Vendor for the event. We have learned our lesson with Players Packages and will be providing all Amateur Divisions with $20 in Funny Money to purchase what you want instead of something that you'll never throw, never wear or never use again.
For more information go to http://www.ozdgc.com or to pre-register go to http://shop.ozdgc.com.
Just an update!
We are working on sponsorships and should have a good chuck of added cash for the pro and Am divisions.
All Amateur Divisions will receive $20 in Funny Money as your players package. This will allow you to get something you want instead of the 45th teeshirt of the season.
Registration is available online at http://shop.ozdgc.com or you can use the attached pdf registration form.
DAY OF REGISTRATION IS $5 MORE!!! THANK YOU FOR PREREGISTERING!!!!
Tendick is a fun course. Nice mix of woods and open. How many of the tees are concrete now? How many by the time the tourney takes place? Not too far from the northern suburbs of Chicago. Should be a great time.
Thanks for the good words Tom.
I would like to say that they are all Concrete but it is actually just the opposite...NONE!
We hit a snag with the Parks Department wanting more control over what happens at the course.
But we are hoping that all short pads (if not all pads) will have concrete by the end of this season.
The course is very dry for as much snow as we have had.
Quick Update!
registrations are starting to trickle in and so are the sponsors!!!
$300 added cash so far...hopefully more to come!
Yohann and I are working on getting more by tournament time!!
There will be food for purchase at the event cooked by Carol's Cafe!
Another Quick update!!
Due to an oversight by a few people who shall remain nameless...mostly ME!!! We just realized that the way the tournament was listed it seemed like it was going to be a two day event. Let me assure you this is not the case.
Intermediate, Rec and Junior are playing Saturday and Saturday Only!
Advanced and Pro divisions are playing Sunday and Sunday Only!
Sorry for the confusion and I hope this doesn't change your mind about playing in the Mayhem Open!!!
Hello,
I am new to the area. I live in batavia Il. Is this tourney close to batavia?
how far is the drive from gurnee? is this a must pre reg event? a few of us might wonder up there on sunday just getting some info
from what i know its about a 1/2 hour north of milwaukee im not sure where batavia is
It's about 2-1/2 hours from Batavia.
Hey, amdiscgolfer! I was not home when you IM'd last night. You do have to do two TD reports when you do a split weekend event.
just registered for this event anyone in the area (gurnee, round lake) going to this? schimo for example
YES,FOR SURE
Thats a lot of questions to answer - Most have been answered
Tendick Park is about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee off Highway 43 in Saukville, WI - There are directions on http://www.ozdgc.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=43
Bruce - I found out that the event was listed as a all in one 2 day event, all divisions playing both days. Which as I posted above is not the case. I talked to Terry and the PDGA and got it all taken care of. Thanks for the help (not sarcastic)
Pre-Reg is preferred - $5 more day of event!!!!!
If there are any of you who are thinking of playing both days, there are hotels around the course - Super 8 is one of them - there is camping not to far as well, but who wants to camp the first weekend of May.
Thanks for the replys!!!! Alitle to far 4 me to travel, I know it will be a good time.

Are there any Illini Peeps coming down to the Mayhem?
We are getting about 5 regs online a day - nothing too crazy - I really wish I would have left it a 1 day event
We are looking for Women to play right now we have 1 Int Women registered.
Please go to http://shop.ozdgc.com and register today!!
I sent you my check on Monday hopefully you get it today.
Excellent - I am in chicago we could have met up at edgebrook or some place
but I will check with the wife and make sure
I'm also planning on going, I'll be registering tonight most likely. Playing Saturday.
Anyone in the Chicago area that is planning on playing either day, or even if you aren't coming to the event for that matter - I am going to Berghoffs restaurant if you wanna meet up :)
If anyone is interested in sharing a ride, I am heading up early Sunday morning from Gurnee. PM me if you are interested. This is a fun course and a very nice park. Some holes in the woods and also some nice open shots. Should be a great time.
Tom
A fun day at a fun course! Except for having to wait for the junior boys to finish both rounds it was a smooth event with a deep and very generous payout - I got $65 in plastic for finishing 5th on top of the $20 player pack - I think they paid out half the field (10 spots out of... 20?). D Barish would've cashed in Rec had he taken one less shot. ;)
We were able to order lunch from a local joint and it was waiting after the morning round.
I avoided a potential crash n burn midway through the 2nd round after 2 bogies and my only doinked putt of the day - a 6-footer for birdie - by nailing a 40-footer for birdie on the next hole which re-energized me - although I did 'not' trot to the basket to retrieve my shot. ::). Not sure what the winning score was; I was -3 or the day and was 5 back after the first round. Left several shots out on the course but in general it was a good day. Not terribly windy and some very interesting holes. If it didn't mean another short night of sleep and a 2-hr+ drive I'd go back again tomorrow.
I'm starting to think after today and after playing Oswego blind last month that I should just play tournaments on courses I've never played before. Travel expenses in this scenario would prove extremely prohibitive, however.
Thanks Jeff, Yohann and the Lifetime crew. Everyone should have a good time tomorrow.
yowzers, that's awesome that there was a $65 payout for 5th. That's definitely hard to top! What division did you play? The entry fees look on the higher side, but when you have good payouts like that, it makes it worth it.
nicely done :)
I played Int. I thought the entry fee was a bit high but not out of line with most other WI tournaments - the payout made up for it though.
Well, This years Mayhem Open is finally DONE!!!!
Let's first say thanks to all who showed up to play the event. Thanks to all the Illini boys who treked it up to Saukville - Your IOS events set the bar and we are trying every time to meet it, Keep it up and we'll keep chasing ya - hopefully we'll meet ya - No one loses when it comes to a Great Event.
We finished the event with total of 104 people over the two days, not a sellout but 21 better than we did last year. The club did excellent and we should have a bigger chunk of $$ in which to go to the Teepads for next year even with the Following statements ;D
The entry fees were about average of what I saw around the US for a B Tier event - Rec $25 for which you get $20 in Funny Money and Crazy Payout....The payout was excellent..........Why you may ask? Well to be Honest - I messed up :)
I never took out the $20 from the players package from any of the Saturday players :o Chalk that one up to Too many things going on a week before the tournament.
Mayhem was a whole lot of fun. Thanks Jeff, Yohann and OZDGC. Yeah, the payouts seemed awful generous. I missed out by a stroke on participating in the inflated payout. Jeff, who will not be a rec player if he can get away from the little ones at home and shoot more, was lights out in the second round. His brother Josh almost imploded after four straight bogies but got his act together, got back a few strokes with some birdies and nosed me out for last cash. Rory Holms hit an ace and cashed as well. I figured with Damon's new putting style we should get home plenty early but the hour saved ;D was then spent waiting for the juniors to come in before the awards ceremony. He was a good sport as I drove home like an 11 speed disc to make a dinner reservation.
I was gonna head up to this thing but I stayed up til 5am playing Tiger the night before and couldn't get out of bed in the morning. Did I know that their was a tournament that I was already registered for when I decided to stay up til 5am?? Yes. And yet I did it anyways which is what makes me the man I am today. I'll definitely be at the next one though to take those Wisconsin bastards money, assuming my old friend Busch Light doesn't get in my way. Those Wisconsin sons of bitches couldn't shoot their way out of a wet paper bag!
RIfleman,
Thats big talk when you didnt even show up this time :) Bring it on up next year - I'll put a bounty on it for ya :o
Thank you to all the volunteers who came out and donated their time, we could not have done it without you. Jenny, Kasten, Brunner, Tony, Seth. Sorry Dibb, no credit for partial effort. Also to all the people who made this event successful the peeps from Illinois, Minnesota and The Homies from Cheeseland.
Without discgolfers...well there would be no disc golf!
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I figured it was Bingham but have never seen him post before.
There was a pretty interesting spread between Saturday and Sunday. Sunday morning the adv/pro pool played the shorts. This is the same course we played on Saturday. I understand it was windier but I can't believe it was that much windier. The same scores were 60 points higher on Sunday morning than they were on Saturday. I think its because we had quite a few players like Jeff and Bill Boppre who are substantially better than their rating shows and a few players like Rory who shot way better than their rating. I can't imagine that the course was that much more difficult on Sunday but the pool of players effected the ratings. Life is graded on a curve and so is golf. :D
Nice job getting scores posted so quickly!
I came out and played on Saturday afternoon and thought it was a little windy. It was windy from the beginning on Sunday and I believe a fairly good amount windier than Saturday. Someone who was there both days please correct if I'm wrong. I don't know much about the ratings and numbers so I can't comment on any of that.
Thanks to the OZDGC for putting on a fun and enjoyable event. My first round I played with guys I've never played with before which was nice. None of them had played the course until the morning of the tournament and I had played it for the first time since about 3 years ago. Please put me with a local guy next time!
Jeff: if you could send me some of the pics that would be great...or do you plan to post them somewhere?
Sometimes you have players who deserve their rating based on how they play long tees at tournaments, but put them on shorts on a home course and they shoot the lights out. When those players play above their rating, they lower ratings for everyone.

But isn't it also true that (scenario extremely simplified):
Three 900-rated players shoot 55 on Saturday.
Three 920-rated players shoot 55 on the same course on Sunday.
Sunday's round is rated higher because the players were rated higher to begin with.

Not sure if this was directed at me or not so I am going to defend myself anyway - I havent played in a PDGA event since Sept of 05. I have played 2 times in the last 6 months - I played the Day after Thanksgiving and the first weekend in April. So for me to shoot lights out is not an understatement - I do not get the time to shoot having two kids one 3 and a half and another 7 months old.
Sure I know the course and have played the course many times - but anyone who knows my game also knows that I emplode in at least one round - I was just amazingly relaxed and was just out to play and have a good time.
Serg - I will have video and pics on the site soon - we are having problems with our gallery.
in theory u are right Damon. the logic behind the ratings is that the 920 players are better than the 900 players, so if they are averaging 55 then 55 must be a 920 rated round. thats why u need a large number of players for the ratings to be accurate. if u have enough people, then the group as a whole will all shoot very close to their average. obviously some well above their average and some well below, but as a WHOLE, the median score will be the same. from my experience over the past several years, the ratings are pretty accurate. obviously if u have a large group of quicly improving players (such as the int/rec day) then ur ratings are giong to be lower. But for the most part, I'm usually able to predict after a round is over what the ratings will be for that round give or take 10-15 pionts. if the ratings were not accurate i wouldnt' be able to predict with any consistency.

You are both saying the same thing. It really doesn't matter WHY they shoot above their rating. It matters THAT they shoot above their rating. There was a lot of above rating shooting on Saturday and there was not so deep of a pool and there were not many higher rated players on the course. This is one of thte reasons I like playing Trophy only with the advanced GM's at IOS. Odds are my rounds will be higher rated than if I had the same round on AM day. Its a marginal diffrence most days, especially when IOS gets such good turnout on AM day. Here, the turnout on AM day was lower and stranger and the differences were profound. [number theory and advanced mathmatical discussion proceeds from here...]
By the way Jeff, I can't tell what Bruce's intent was (but it did not appear malicious). I simply felt you had a hot day and that you are a better player than your rating demonstrates. Life (as you explained in your post) intervenes and keeps you from getting to the level you will eventually get to. The flip side is that without the time to practice the hot days will be balanced by...those other days.
I can tell you that Bruce wasn't calling anyone a bagger. Bruce and I both believe in the ratings system give or take a tweak or two and if you play your rating you are fine by us. He was just saying that some Ams have the ability to shoot well over their rating on their home course from the short tees (assuming that their rating isn't from only playing their home course from the short tees).
However, I agree with Damon and others that you will generally get a little ratings bump if you play on the adv/pro day rather than the rec/int day although I don't think the bump is usually very significant. I think its usually 5 to 10 points or about one stroke per round. When a statistician sees that they dismiss it because its not statistically relevant but the rest of us rec/int players have seen it so many times that we know its not a coincidence.
I didnt think he was being accusative of me baggin - I simply wanted to explain my side regardless - even if I would have played INT - I would have finished in the bottom of the pack - not last but non-the-less near the bottom :)

I understand what you are saying. What I was saying is that Bruce wasn't accusing ANYONE of bagging.

Yeah, but Streamwood IOS last yr was a lot more than that with nearly identical conditions; David pointed out there was about a 50-pt difference in Saukville, so it must have been *really* windy on Sunday.... ::)
I essentially 'shot my rating' on Sat and my rating is terrible; but I know I played as well as I did last month in Oswego, which was unofficial but came out to be about 60 pts better!?
Statistics, damn lies, etc..... I know the only answer is just suck it up and play on the Adv day(s), but it's still annoying. I've kvetched before that this points out a hole in the ratings system, but I don't have any solution. My point in responding to Jon, though, is that it appears to be more than an insignificant anomaly of a stroke or so.
[Jon: sure hope you're feeling better by now!]
I was not directing my comment at anyone. I was just pointing out a factor that makes for that split-day ratings effect. I think of it as the Terry Calhoun factor. Terry is a 970 rated player from short tees on his home courses. Otherwise he is a pretty steady 920ish kind of player.
I think you find more of those players in the lower pools. So that is part of the lower pool effect.
The other part of the lower pool effect is that the lower pool has more rapidly improving players in it shooting well above their rating and the upper pool has more players who are improving slowly and only shooting a little above their rating. Those rapidly improving players depress ratings for everyone.
If a TD wanted to smooth out this effect, instead of dividing the days ProAdv / IntRec, he could divide the days ProInt / AdvRec.
I think the effect is a good thing and does not need to smoothed out. If an Intermediate plays a lot of split-days on the lower day only, when he finally gets bumped up to Advanced he'll be ready, because he'll be a better player than his rating indicates. And if codgers like Damon and I would rather have better personal ratings because it lifts our self-esteem, we can play on the upper day and get the better rating.
I look forward to the day when I'm accused of bagging in the advanced division. :D
