IOS #1 @ Kenosha, WI--04/21&22/07
Don't know if you guys are aware, but construction to the Union expansion has begun. The hole that throws from the corner of the Union to the practice basket is no longer available. There is a construction fence that extends nearly to the sidewalk. We used a new hole created for the Prairie Open that ran alongside the buildings after hole 18 that may wish to be considered. The Big Chill also had a couple of fun holes.
Let me know how many holes you are thinking of using and perhaps I could help out.
Will the Sunday group be playing one round from longs and one from shorts?
Could someone email/pm me a list of possible pin locations (even if it's just for Saturday)? We are going to try and move some baskets to preserve the areas. It's pretty wet out here right now so some have already been moved.
I'll take care of notifying Tamie about the changes.
Thanks.

Sergio,
You have an e-mail. Also, are holes 1 & 2 going to be affected in any way? I'll have a document in the next few weeks with all the info. Not much will change from last year to this year. Adv/Pro playing long/long & Int/Rec/Jr playing Long/Short.
Thanks for everything.
Anybody getting excited about this? I am. I'm pretty sure I'm going to play Advanced this year. I'm still averaging 940 rounds, so some of the time I should be competitive in Advanced.
Save $5 and pre-register. Save all of that $5 by pre-registering with Brett at league or by mail. If we continue to grow in attendance, Kenosha will fill both days on pre-reg. With Pro-Am Worlds in KBC Michigan next year, you'll want to get your points this year.
I'm ready. We were out at Parkside yesterday and it's looking good. Super Long Tee on hole #8 is the only tee not playable right now. It was soft in places but not too bad.
There will be an alternate after hole #4 (4A) on the other side of the road. It will play between the road and sidewalk with both being out of bounds. The pin will be slightly elevated. It plays between 310 & 330ft.
5A will stay the same as last year. I have a few others scouted out and will make those decisions soon.
I'm going to be up in Wisconsin for other reasons on Saturday and I don't feel like driving down to Naperville and back for Sunday morning. Any recommendations on cheap places to stay up that direction for Saturday night.
There's a big hospital about three or four miles south of the course. The parking lot is really quiet at night. You probably mean somewhere where you don't have to sleep in the car?
There are several hotels in and around Kenosha, especially at the I94/Hwy 50 (75th Street) interchange.
There is a Microtel Inn within 10 minutes north of campus on Highway 31 (Green Bay Road).
CHECK HERE (http://www.microtelinn.com/reservations/locationdetail.asp?facid=1166&in_month=&in_day=&out_month=&out_day=&guests=1&iata=&rate_access_code=&i=)
That would be the closest one timewise.

Do you mean 6A? When you walk across 7's fairway and throw toward the buildings?
What about the one after hole 18 that was played for the Prairie Open? You walked across the sidewalk from 18's basket. You threw south to north alongside the buildings. It played just about 300 feet. The basket was located down near the sidewalk (OB) in between the bushes. Kind of plays like an island green.

Yes, I meant 6A. The hole after #18 is a possibility. Will holes 1 & 2 be affected by the construction?
I'd expect holes 1 & 2 to be too far away from the Union to be affected by anything.
#1 and #17 are super-short right now. I'm assuming they'll be moved back for the IOS.

17 was under water. They moved some baskets yesterday to try and minimize the damage to the course.
yeah. they moved #1, #10, 13 & 14 between my 1st & 2nd rounds. 8)
Holes #1 and #2 will not be affected for the tournament, HOWEVER, the IOS #1 will be the LAST tournament played with the current holes #1 and #2. As soon as construction begins, holes #1 and #2 will be gone....FOREVER! Time to make room for a parking lot. The Prairie Open will definitely have some new holes.
It's interesting to see the "master plan" of the university. The disc golf course will have probably 6-7 hole "reconfigurations" because of construction. The Inner Loop Road will be widening a full lane so hole #4 might have to be moved eventually. Hole #15 might lose the pro teepad.
We will have the pins in tournament positions hopefully two weeks prior to the event, if not sooner.
Thank you for the help and information Sergio!
With the record setting weather this past weekend, and less than a month until the first IOS#1 (my pre-reg has been sent), I'm definitely ready to get out and play more. When will the pdga.com pre-reg list start being maintained?
Probably when Brett is done with basketball. Is high school basketball done in Illinois? It just finished in Michigan.
It looks like about five players are pre-registered right now.
Brett,
Same basket positions as last year? If not, what are the changes.
Course layout will be pretty much identical to last year.
Prereg list will start when I get back from Denver.
Serg,
Actually, I think the Prairie Open may be the last tournament to use #1 & #2.
Dennis
quick, someone sanction a tournament after the prarie open to steal the honors of last time playing #1 & #2 lol (Sorry, just feeling in a giddy mood tonight)
I won't miss #1 since I'm a lefty. #2 was nothing special other than a hole that i better deuce to make up for all the other screwups I'll do during the round.
#1 is one of the best holes on the course. that sucks it wont' be there.
#2 is a nice challanging hole in the long position. Bummer!
Any update on course conditions at Parkside? I'm thinking of heading up on Sun.
Obviously the rain this week might change things, but how is it now? Are the baskets still in short positions?
Hole #6: Make sure not to throw too far left. They are creating a "pond" and the water level is creeping toward the basket more and more each day.
Hole #9 is really wet...make sure to "walk the plank."
Hole 12# is kind of sloppy and Hole #13 is a little sloppy walk down the path.
It's raining here today. I'm sure things will change.

If you are playing in an age or gender restricted division, masters, juniors and women, pre-register so i'll know to make a trophy disc for your division. I'm starting those in five minutes.
If you register for advanced trophy only, do you appear as registered on the PDGA website?
There is a manual process involved in updating the PDGA website. No matter how you pre-register, or what you pre-register for, you will appear there eventually. Brett does most of the updating of the PDGA pre-reg list.

Holes #2 and #4 being moved to tourney position today. Brett can tell you where they will be (or come and play and you'll see).
So are all holes in tournament position now?
After Serg puts 2 and 4 in their tournament positions, I believe 1, 10, 12 and 15 will still be out of tournament positions.

I'm going to play rec women again this year.....It's going to take a little more time to get back to throwing in the 700's again :(
The 14-day Accuweather Foreguess is for awesome weather, partly sunny and in the 50s.
Brett or Mirth,
Can you guys add me to the advanced players list for IOS#1 (pdga# 25428)? Unless my check bounced....LOL!
Thanks.
Mirth got mine at least a week ago, but I still don't see it on the pre-reg list for Sunday.
Doug & Mike,
Your names will be added tonight along with 6 other mail ins.
AFAIK Brett hasn't updated the online list @ PDGA recently. I went thru and processed all of the preregistrations that I've received as of yesterday last night. Even though your names aren't online you are preregistered, worry not.
Pre-register. Save a few bucks. I'm working on trophy discs. Help me figure out which ones to make.
If you are playing in any of the following divisions, Open Pro, Pro Master, Adv Master, or any women or junior divisions, and you are pre-registered, you can pick what disc I use for your trophy disc from this list:
Squall
Tsunami
Riptide
Titanic
Rogue
Crush
First to post wins, unless you are so slow I have to pick it myself. Also, if you want something else Discraft or DGA, shout it out with a fallback pick from the list and I'll check if I have it in white ESP.
List has been updated on pdga.com
Bzzzzzt. I'm sorry; that was the wrong answer. You'll all get Avenger SSs.

Becky, are you throwing full weight discs or 150 stuff? The Rogue does not hyzer hard. You really should try one. I'll see if I have a white Rogue left.
I've been throwing 165-170 wt and have 150 Eagles that I like.
For that matter, the Avenger SS is not overstable either. I'll see if I have anything lower than 170 that is white and not overstable.

A while ago it was said that baskets would be in tournament position a few weeks before the tourney. Obvoiusly the weather hasn't cooperated. Are they in position now? If not, any thoughts when they will be?
Also, what's the snow like up there right now?
I heard last year that baskets 1-4 are going to be ripped out for a new building, whats up with that? I know its not changing for the tourny but is that happening this summer? Also, someone told to the north of the current course in the woods they are trying to get a 2nd course put in...is that happening?

This will probably be the last tournament that you will be able to play holes 1 and 2...bummer!!! Sergio might have an idea on how/where the new holes will be routed and their location.
I was out there today. Pretty soupy. Lots of standing water and mud. There were some piles of mulch in the woods waiting to be spread on the main paths. Any idea when the 5 out of place baskets will be put to the right location? I know it's just too wet right now for most to be moved, but I'm going up there again on Thurs and Fri next week to practice and was wondering if I'd be getting a chance to play the course as it will be for the weekend.

This should not happen until next summer.. the current Union hall is outdated, looking forward to a new one.. hole 1 and 2 might be parking lots and the roads are being rerouted so the road by hole 2 will be gone so we will be able to use that space after renovations to rework a few holes back in.. so next year there will most likely be only 14 holes on the main course.
New course might go in this fall or next spring.. will be behingd the cop shop and maintance building (east of current course). New course will make it possible to do multi-day events. we just need 9 more baskets and we got another course. It will be a much longer championship style course.. not sure what the longest permanant hole is in the US.. something like 1021ft. we may have one that goes 1022ft...

Looks like he's been working behind the scenes -
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-15day.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&zipcode=53140&metric=0
Current forecast for IOS1 looks awesome for late April!
After playing some very muddy courses today I was very surprised Parkside was not quite as muddy as I expected.
I marked the 4 alternate holes with flags. Hopefully they stay in place. I did not have paint to mark the tees in grass. The tee for 18A is on the sidewalk. I'll use chalk for that.
On Saturday Super Long #8 will not be playable. It's under at least 6 inches of water. The long tee will be played both rounds.
On the front 9 only Hole #1 is not in tourney position.
On the back Holes #10, 12, 13, 15, & 17 are not in tourney position. Hopefully with the weather those holes dry up this week.
45 players pre-reged already. Getting trophy discs done here.
I was up there today; I don't think 12 is going to dry out (although it's really not any worse than what the short position is now) but the others seem fine, pretty much.
Yeah, I was out there tonight too and the course is definitely getting better. We've got at least 4 days of sunshine ahead of us, so it should be fine. Hopefully it dries out enought to handle all the foot traffic that comes with the event.
Were the flags to the temps still there?
I honestly didn't notice one way or the other. I got off of work in Glenview at 5:30 and hauled up there to squeeze in a round with a guy I work with. We were moving pretty quickly and I didn't think to look for flags. I did run into Al and Neal, though, and they had played a couple of rounds. One of them might have noticed.
they were there til at least 2 pm... 18b is a nicely treacherous hole, by the way.
Maddisen and I made score cards and registration/leader board cards Sunday morning. Please note that our score cards will have the distances for super long #8 and the slightly less accurate distances for the alternates.

The less accurate distances on the scorecards would be my fault. I forgot to return your wheel to you at the Kensington doubles. ;)
I plan to go out to the course today after work and try and move whatever baskets I can. If anyone plans to come up during the week you'll be able to play some of the back nine tourny locations.
As mentioned in earlier posts it's just been too wet to move baskets into tourny location. We've been trying to lay chips but then we got the beautiful snow fall. Now we're into the weekdays and getting a "work day" on the course won't be happening. We are going to try to get our facilities crew to do some chipping. I think it was requested by our "course" supervisor but again, the weather didn't cooperate...that's why there are moguls on hole #10.
I'll update later on placements.

That has nothing to do with it. Brett posted more accurate distances for the temps after we printed and cut all the score cards. That's why I was hoping to have course routing sheets for all players.
What are the odds of being able to complete both rounds no later than 4:00 p.m. on Sunday? Not awards, just the rounds.
Edit -- Oops! I mean Saturday.
Odds are low,
Even with a half hour earlier start, my prediction would be a finish (sans awards) around 4:30 (3 hours/ rd, plus 1 hr for lunch)

The weather looks fantastic for the weekend. Looking like low 60's at this point. By far the best weather this event has seen.
i'm gonna have to miss this one this year, darnit. my buddy is closing his bar, the roo bar, colorado's most disc golf friendly bar, after 14 years (they are tearing the building down for condos), and this weekend is the last hurrah. my attendance is, needless to say, mandatory. have fun at kenosha, kids. i'll be thinking of you between hangovers.
77 players in at this moment. That's only 35% full. Check the weather and then save a couple bucks by pre-registering.
Hole 18B will lose all the trees tomorrow (Thursday). They are moving all the trees along the road that are basically part of hole 18B's fairway.
We did a lot of chip spreading today. Unfortunately holes 11, 12 and 13 are still pretty muddy and hard to reach with the gators or trucks. Can't be certain that those fairways will be chipped for this weekend.
Thanks to Brian, Carla, Dave and Joe for helping spread the chips today. It was cold (and rainy during the day) but we got'em done!

Maybe it has been brought up before, but reading another thread made me think, how is the parking going to work for this event?
parking + weekends = free, afaik. Regardless, UWP knows we have the event going on everyone should be fine.
No valet parking this year. Park your own car. Remember where you parked it. :D
You need a parking pass on weekdays.. if you go to the cop shop you can buy a day pass for parking for a dollar..
Sure bets the $25 dollar ticket.. have seen a few tickets this week already from guys from IL out playing golf..

You need to make sure the switch was done when you check in. When you sign your registration card make sure it is the proper color card for your division. Ask whoever hands you the card to sign, "Is this the correct color card for Intermediate?" Changing the division name on Mirth's list is not going to get you in Intermediate if Jon or Becky has already filled out a Rec card for you.
Got that?

You have to go to the cops only now. I went to the union to buy a pass today and they told me they couldn't give them out there any more.
I have special player pack requests from Tacimala, Krupika, Mukey, JR and Jon. These will be set aside. Please ask for them from me on the day you are there except JR. JR's will probably be clipped to his leaderboard card.

Cool beans. Becky, don't forget to bring the leader board and all the normal TD supplies. I'm bringing back up TD supplies and an overflow pin board if we need it. If you have time to conform the leader board to the course routing, that would be helpful.
oh yeah, bruce - I'm gonna take a DGA player's pack. Never have enough blowflies! :)
gotcha
Bruce & I will be at the course tomorrow afternoon. Online registration closes at noon Friday. If there are spots available you can register at the course. Saturday is starting to fill up. Only 30 spots left. There should be no problem registering tomorrow at the course for Sunday.
Yeah, but I gotta add one thing to that. Because of the way we are tracking who pre-registered and who did not, I think we need to close pre-reg at noon when on-line pre-reg closes. All of the pre-reg'd players have to be on Mirth's list. So, you can register at the course tomorrow but you can't pre-register at the course tomorrow. I might be wrong. If Brett can get you on Mirth's list tomorrow at the course, he can take pre-reg. I can't. I can only take reg.
Meanwhile, right now we have 75 players pre-reg'd for Saturday. We have 35 spots left, plus maybe one more for a player who might withdraw. So if you really want to play on what looks like a spectacular day, you better click on the store link above at the top of the page or get out to the course Friday afternoon or early evening. I don't think there will be many Saturday spots left Saturday morning.
A couple of other things and then I have to check on what's baking in the oven: Some divisions did not pre-reg in time for me to get trophy discs done. Talk to me Saturday about your options if you're a Grandmaster or a Junior boy.
I'm leaving early tomorrow morning so its now too late to e-mail me any special merch requests.

9am but it would be nice if everyone checked in as soon as you arrive so that we can get players on the board. The later you check in the more likely you are to not be playing in your division during the first round.
All players check in at the registration table by 9am sharp :)

I think Dan has course routing for both Pro/Adv & Int/Rec/Jr. I have no fliers. Printing has been restricted here at work.
I wish more TDs would offer the trophy only option. It gives people a chance to compete w/o going broke. Look at the pro women's division. So far only 1 of the 8 pre-registered is playing for cash. 5 of those women could be playing for plastic in advanced. Sometimes I think TDs feel the need to raise entry fees to make the payout bigger because that's what the players want. I think this goes to show that sometimes people just want to compete.
I can't wait!! Accuweather was stating 19 mph winds for Sunday! Should be a lot of fun >:D
I can print out some flyers if need be, but it seems Dan's got that covered.
19 mph is a light breeze for Parkside, esp for April...
thankfully a good number of the holes are wooded shots, and wind won't get in the way as much as the trees will :)

See me at the course today if you plan to preregister. Bruce has no idea what he is talking about ;D.

Makes sense to me. At least he admits he "MIGHT" be wrong.

Remember, Bruce is a lawyer. Little semantic differences like this brighten his day. He said that you cannot PREREGISTER at the course. However, you can REGISTER. Why would that matter? PREREGISTRATION is a bit cheaper. I guess Bruce thinks the rates went up. Given that I would suggest that you look for Brett. I'm just imagining the poor kid who shows up at the Brakel door to take one of the junior champions to a prom one day...
Bruce: I told you that one of the pre conditions for picking up (insert name here) was to bring a corsage.
kid: Sir, I have one with me.
Bruce: Well, son, today is the day of the prom. You have met a condition, but not a precondition. You needed to bring the corsage by Noon on Friday.
kid: Well, sir, can I pick her up at Mr. Comincioli's house. He says I can bring a corsage as long as its before the player's meeting or the first dance whichever comes first.
Bruce: I'm sorry son. I can't do that. You've blown the time period for a precondition. However, you can still meet the condition of bringing a corsage but you will have to get her home an hour earlier than we agreed to...
kid: But sir, that means she has to be home now!
Man the weather is just gorgeous today. I had to take a 2 hour lunch downtown just to soak in some of it before coming back to work. Tomorrow should be even better!
Course is looking great! Weather looks perfect for April. All names have been added to the PDGA Toiur Page so the list is up to date and accurate. 30 spots left for tomorrow. Get there early if you plan to play.
1st round scores are up. http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6600&year=2007&includeRatings=1#Open
I had to miss my first IOS because I came down with bronchitis this week and my doctor and Becky didn't want me to travel. So, I'm playing the part of Houston Control today and posting the scores remotely with Maddisen calling the scores into me.
That's no joke, get better man.
From the looks of it, VERY few people under par.
Final scores should be going up within about 30 minutes. I have half the scores for the second round so far. Unofficially Chris Heeren has won and Brett and Neal are tied for second in MPO. Barrett White wins handily in FPO. Tom McManus in MG1 and Ben Singer in MA1. Full scores up shortly.
Full scores and unofficial ratings are up:

This Houston Control thing is pretty good actually. During the second round I was able to check everyone's PDGA number to make sure there weren't any typos. Should make the unofficial ratings more accurate. That's something that I don't have time to do when I'm actually at the tournament.
Jon - David Keiser (playing Adv TO today, 27642) his name is misspelled... Not that it matters since his pdga number is correct but its a cosmetic thang.
Saw the scores are up. Good 2nd rounds Heeren & Swanson. Same too for Brett - two solid almost 1000-rated rounds.
Fixed. And I added Mullens PDGA number. That brought ratings down by 1. Apparently you don't have to be current to be a 'gator.

I forgot my tag...how do I go about getting that back again? :(
good grief, Jon. Feel better - right now!!
that second round wind was apparently pretty strange for nearly everyone. I felt like for the most part I played better the 2nd round even though my score was worse - and statistically that appears to be the case. By some fluke I had the 'best' real-old-guy round in the afternoon, but the hole I'd dug this morning was too deep to crawl out of. So I shot better than my rating for the day, which only indicates that my rating is pretty pathetic to begin with.
Mad props to David 'da Bomber' Barish who got the only birdie on our card in the 2nd round. I think.
worst round ever. :-\
First round scores are up for the Inter/Rec/Jr divisions for IOS #1:

Wow looks like the guy leading Rec after first round won't be playing in that division for long! Nice shooting!

He said he's never played a tourney and his freinds told him to play rec...or that's what I heard.
Should move to adv. if that's typical shooting for him.
Nah you gotta start somewhere so that's cool that he did so well in his first tourney. Looks like round 2 brought him back down to earth a bit but he'll be in advanced after the ratings update most likely.
well, even though my rounds were TERRIBLE, I'm really happy there was an AMIV division. I was too tired to putt worth anything, but I at least felt like I had something to shoot for in the second round other than playing the round to get it over with and go home.
I look forward to playing at Lombard!
Fantastic weekend. The weather was awesome and Parkside looked great. I want to thank all the guys that worked on the course and moved baskets.
I have a few tags and will get them back to people as I see them.
The ace pool is approxiamtely $340 and will be rolling over to Lombard.
Ben and I had a great time! Jon, do you mind staying home every tourney? ;) The Brakel women did a great job keeping things running smoothly. It was a bonus to go home and find the rounds already posted. Thanks to Barrett for putting up w/ all us adv women. It's always a good time playing with her.
I'm really glad there was an AM IV division, esp. since I won. :-) Though looking over the results, there were at least six others that qualified for AM IV, but played AM III. I'll have to do better if I want to win again.
My wife is laughing at me / giving me grief every time she looks at my forehead. I have a nice line where my cap stopped. The top half is white and the rest of it is sunburned. I need to add sunblock to the standard bag supplies.
Kudos to all the people that got the course ready.
See you all at Lombard.
just tell her it's a halo :)
congrats on the win.
Talking to some of the AMIII's that qualified for for AMIV I know for sure that they will be playing AMIV at upcoming tournaments, so the field will definitely be tougher for the upcoming tournaments!
:) I remembered to bring sunblock on sunday after seeing the wife & kids get pinkified on saturday during a bike ride.
That was my first time playing that course and it was a lot of fun. You could really tell how much work had been put into everything to get the course ready for that many people and it was very appreciated. I will definitely be making some trips up there for some casual rounds!
Even though I wasn't there I know some people did a lot of work on the course including spreading wood chips to make the muddy areas playable. Thanks for all everyone did to make the course in such great playing shape!
Sorry I ran out of so much stuff. I'd forgotten how much merch we go through at an IOS. And I could have brought more Blowflies if I had listened to Kiralyn. I did not realize there was a pent up demand for Blowflies. She said, "Bring the back-up DGA," and she was right.
I'm reordering lots of Innova and a little Discraft. I'm also getting some of those Raging Inferno DTs. Quite frankly, I think a lot of things Quest has come out with have been gimmicky, but the Raging Inferno DT is the real deal. I don't know if it is the dimples or the dome but that thing can fly. Also, their center weighted putter is really straight. If I have any of those left, I want to play around with that for a bit and see if it beats a soft Magnet for short putts.
Diana and Becky did an amazing job running the show in Jon's absence. So much stuff has to get done while everyone is playing, and they got it done!
What a great weekend! Now I remember why I was so upset when winter came. :) Thanks for everything, Bruce and co.! See you all at Lombard.

I second that motion! Thanks for having my back! Maybe since they've proved themselves so well I can take the afternoon of the upper day for picture taking...or maybe follow Marie's suggestion and just not show up at all anymore! :o I'm hoping she's just joking because I plan to be at the rest of the events this year.
I think Diana and I did well because we are part of a team....we did more than we usually do but we had seen it done before. It was fun :)
If you want to take pics in the afternoon, Jon....go ahead. We'll hold down the fort :)
Pictures would be very cool! I always enjoy seeing photographers on the course. Speaking of your photos, any update on the Channahon photos from last fall's tourney?

It's on my list of things to do. I just have to upload them so it is kind of lame that I haven't done it yet. I thought about doing it Saturday after Maddisen and I got the first round scores up but I fell asleep instead!

I'm just teasing...or am I? >:D BTW, Ben and I practiced MarioKart in the off-season. He really wants that trophy.
