Saul Esquivel just turned 10 years old. He played in the Summit Open in the "10 and Under" Division. Will there be a similar division that he can play in, at IOS #5?

I believe that there is a 13 and under division that is usually available for the IOS tournaments?  I think there is about 4 or 5 young men that have been showing up for each of the IOS tournaments.

He can still play 10 and under. It is based on the year of birth not the date of birth.

The water in front of the 17 basket/18 teebox is the only place that has standing water. All the other holes/fairways are fine.

After a heavy rain, water used to collect in front of 1, 2, 3, and some other holes. But they are all dry. You can walk straight to the basket on all of them. No water. I don't know if the park district did something with drainage into the creek, but they are all very playable.

7A is flooded though, being next to the lake. That's a temp hole we all talked about after last year's tournament was over. It was the best hole at Jericho Lake. Wish it could have stayed.

I got my Aurora discs today.  Diana, Kelsey and Kira all liked the custom stamp.  It is just a carp jumping out of the pond [jumping off the menu of a Chinese restaurant, actually!] to see what is going on.  So I'll be starting on tournament trophies tonight.  Time to pre-register.

If anyone wants a Bears Flick, I've got a lot of orange Z Flicks, both in the 150 and the normal, heavier weights.  I'm not sure what else I have because there was a little mix up on the order.  I saw the heavier Flicks and am assuming that the 150s will be there too.  Hoping, anyway!

Whoever was asking about D-Buzzzes, I have twelve or so.  Stock stamped, no fishes.

I thought the 12A Aaron laid out for the Ice Bowl played well, even though you had to walk back up the fairway to exit.  It threw north from just north of the 13 long tee.  OB fence line on the left, creek on the right.  280ish distance, I think.

How I remember it (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=41.739121,-88.384648&spn=0.001421,0.002484&t=h&z=19&om=1&msid=103823172632293815936.00043871ad63b3d9360a4)

I agree with Kurt, I really liked the alternate that was played at the ice bowl.  I wonder how close the creek/river gets to that area with all the added rain right now.  That came into play for a couple people on my card.

I don't know if there's anything you can do about having to walk back up that fairway to move on to the next hole.  That would be the only reason I could see it not working for an IOS (presuming there's enough people that you can't put many gaps in between cards).

last year the IOS had around 72 each day. That' s 18 foursomes. No room for many gaps.

If I remember correctly there is gap in the fence about 3/4 of the way back towards the hole that goes into the garden area where the gardeners go to get water from the stream, but I am not sure if you can get back to the course from the fields, I will check into it when I get back from vacation ext week.

Oops, that link was supposed to include the fairway and pin placement.  Should be fixed now. Updated Link (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=41.739121,-88.384648&spn=0.001421,0.002484&t=h&z=19&om=1&msid=103823172632293815936.00043871ad63b3d9360a4)

Walking back up the fairway was not a huge deal 'cause the hole was fairly short.  It might be possible, however to go counter-clockwise around the garden area to where the other temp holes were laid out, thereby avoiding crossing 14 like we did last year.

The green for last year's hole 7A is under water and will probably stay that way for a while.

I heard that the creek has risen.  High.  Go figure.  Michael E told me that you can't cross the bridge to the back nine & that hole #3's basket is almost entirely underwater.  Three weeks until IOS #5, keep an eye on this course, & start putting together a back-up plan!

I am not an expert on these things and don't know how long it will take for the water to recede much less dry, but what are the odds that Jericho will still be a flood or mucky, marshy, muddy, mush in three weeks?  The pictures are pretty impressive.  Is it worthwhile to consider a backup?
Title: Re: IOS #5 @ Aurora, IL--09/15&16/07
Post by: pickax on August 27, 2007, 12:31:03 PM
Flooded? It shouldn't be flooded by the IOS, but it will take some time for the ground to be dried out. The best scenario would keep the course closed for the next few weeks so that the turf is not completely destroyed. My guess is that the locals are like the rest of us and just want to play. It will probably be a mess still for a while.
Title: Re: IOS #5 @ Aurora, IL--09/15&16/07
Post by: can't putt on August 27, 2007, 01:57:58 PM
Hole 3 and holes 17 & 18 never really completely dried out from this past winter but were very playable.  Earlier this spring, rainwater made 2,3,4 and most of the back nine unplayable, but the ground recovered nicely.  The real question in my mind is how much silt washed in from the creek.  If a lot, then those holes could be a mess for a very long time.  If little, then I think there will be no problem.  Provided of course the wet weather does not continue.  As an alternate, Eagle Ridge should be considered as it's close geographically, holds up very well to rain, and is a decent course.  Although the tee pads are not concrete, they are certainly better than Crystal Lake.
Title: Re: IOS #5 @ Aurora, IL--09/15&16/07
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on August 28, 2007, 02:21:34 PM
The only problem with considering Eagle Ridge is that when our club spoke with the park district in Oswego as they were putting in the new 9 holes, it was stated to us that they would not allow the course to be closed for a tournament; it is a public park. I can check into the possibility of reserving it, if wanted.

I went out there today after our club meeting and as above, 17 and 18 are wet, but playable. Holes 3 and 4 are no longer under water, but muddy. With some decent weather, they should be fine. I am not so sure about the fairway for 17 though. It took unntil June for the hole to originally dry out from the wet spring, so I would imagine it will take a while for this bout to do the same. Our VP has contacted the head of the Rec Dept at the Park District and asked to get the water pumped out b4 the tourney, but have yet to get a response. Will update as I get more info.

I once played a tournament at Riverbends where 75% of the course was ankle deep water.  They had a special rule: you could play the water out of bounds or casual, whatever worked for you.

I once took a hike in the Smokey Mountains, four miles, uphill the entire way, ankle deep water the entire way, 18 kinds of rain.

Water is pretty benign stuff.  You can have a lot of fun even if there is a little water here and there.

Title: Re: IOS #5 @ Aurora, IL--09/15&16/07

Actually there is 3 divisons.

1. Recreational  (players with ratings under 875)
2. Intermediate   (ratings under 915)
3. Advanced

Since you are new to the tournament scene, you should play the Recreational division and not worry about what division you belong in.  There is nothing wrong with any new player deciding to play in Rec.  See how you feel after that and at the next event you can decide if you want to move up a division.

I agree completely, Bruce, but the problem we are running into is the loss of the grass in that area, it is becoming a bog and we would like to actually like to keep it grass if possible, with maybe next year keeping a defined area as a water hazard, not both fairways.

- 3 & 4 are a little soft, but gentle footsteps do no damage and your shoes do not get muddy.
- 7A is still under water, but the water is receding nicely.  Possibly playable by next weekend, but not as far out on the peninsula.
- 17 & 18 fairways are a muddy mess and still have some standing water.  Heavy traffic would really damage these areas IMO.
- All other holes are just fine.
- 6 along the creek is marked for JULIE to inspect.  New fence going in?

Conditions have really not changed much, there is still ankle deep water on most of the fairway for 17 and the beginning of 18's fairway. The rest of the course is pretty good, with the fairways for 3 and 4 a little muddy, but very playable. Right now the worst problem is the smell from the anaerobic mud of the creekbed being deposited all over the course.

The course is in good shape. With another week of good weather 17 & 18 might be playable but i'm not planning on it. 17 still has quite a bit of standing water on it.

Here is the course plan.

Play holes 1 thru 13. There will be no temp hole 7A.

All the alternate holes are now marked as of today.

After hole 13 there will be a par 4 that plays from the path near #14 short tee straight west across the open area with the basket near the road. On & over the road will be OB. That hole will be 13A. It's 610 ft.

13B will be similar to last year. The basket will be in the same place. The tee will be slightly shorter and is farther to the east near the trees. The open hyzer route is blocked. The fence & road is OB. It's 325ft.

13C will be quite a bit different this year. The tee is farther east this year. The basket is placed between the cluster of pine tees. It's a straighter shot with several obstacles in the fairway. It's 285ft. Those pine trees are big time catchers!!!

13D will be exactly the same as last year.

You wil then play holes 14 thru 16.

Hole #17 will have a temp tee pad in the grass playing to the basket of #18. This hole is 295ft.

2 Rounds of 21.

Here is my best attempt at a Google Course Map for IOS#5
Note The Google Satellite images are old and missing many of the tress for the alternates.
The tees/lines marked in red are not in play for 2007. 13A is out of order in the list.

Yeah, I paid using Paypal. It has already shown paid at my bank so I assuming it will clear with you any day now. I think I may have registered as intermediate but I am not sure if I should be there or recreational. What do you think? I don't have a rating yet because this will be my first sanctioned tournament with a PDGA number. After playing with you a few times what do think would be the best division for me? Let me know. Thanks Mirth.

Ryan - For your first tournament do whatever feels right to you. Recreational is fine unless you a) kill the competition by a huge margin or b) eventually get a rating that places you into Intermediate or Advanced.

We will have 40 Throw Discraft player packs of 20 Brass each.  I have to go make them now.  I'm not going to apportion them.  The lower day players are getting more overall trophy discs than the upper day players.  So if the upper day players scoop the Throw Discraft Player Packs, it's even.

I'll tell Maddisen that you have to ask for a Throw Discraft Player Pack on the upper day.

There was standing water on it yesterday. You really don't want to go over there. If you do grip lock it there, I recommend reapplying bug spray before venturing in. I would recommend asking about it at the players meeting morning of the tournament. My guess is that it will be casual as it is really not well defined. The creek is definitely OB and even worse from a bug point of view.

Thanks Dave, Neither you nor Diana were on my card second round. Just didn't seem right. Its a good thing AM4 is 850 and under next year or I'd be fighting from the bottom of AM3.

Great weather! The cool down kept the biting and flying insects at bay but it was still plenty warm enough to play comfortable. Here are Saturdays results: http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6613&year=2007&includeRatings=1#Open

76 players - 4 more than last year!
I thought Travis Rose was a current PDGA member?

He is. Someone else filled out his card and didn't put a number. I figured I'd look it up later. Anyway, that's fixed. Putting in his PDGA number brought everyone's round ratings down 1 or 2 points...including his own!

Thanks to everyone who helped out, the other Brakels, Brett, Mukey, Krupicka, me, and anyone who might have helped Brett get out and bring in baskets, Dan maybe.  Thanks to the Aurora club for getting the word out.  Attendance was excellent.

We got home at 4:00 a.m.  Today I have to do inventory and go to work on the next one.  I'll try to do even more Cubs and Bears discs, and some Yodas, and a few other specials I have in mind.  The Sunday players did not get to see too many of the Cubs and Bears discs.  But hopefully a lot of them will play Saturday for the $500 ace pool at Round Lake and they can grab one for their player pack.

Jon,

I noticed a few things on the Adv/Pro day.

Nate Yemm #26549. He's currently listed as Neil Yemm with no PDGA #.
Matt Welter #28076 has a pdga but is not current.
Bob Gorbold #29428. I missed this one during prereg. Not current.

Brett- you may want to add to your file for the course routing sheet for Aurora two things as a reminder for next year.

1) swap which tee is played at hole #2. Use the left (North) tee for Rd 1 and the right  (South) tee for Rd 2. When playing two rounds of longs it doesn't really matter, but when you play long and then short, it matches up better.

2)  We should block the incorrect tee pad for that hole for both rounds. I felt bad for the 12 or so players that received +2 on Sunday.

I don't feel sorry for the ones that tried to argue that the course routing sheet wasn't clear (when it was) and especially when they were only 300 feet from tourney central to make sure they did the right thing.

I'm not sure about that - I believe it's a little easier from the left side for some reason - but I think maybe most people 'think left to right' and it's easier to remember that 1st rd is left, 2nd rd is right.

Those that think but don't read, that is.

I think part of it is the locals call the obstructed left side tee the long tee and the straight shot right hand tee  the short tee.

it also follows the pattern that the "short" tee box is always to the right of the sign post (and also is the side with the distances posted) - I can't remember if there are exceptions to this on this particular course, but in those exception cases it's obvious what tee is the short and what tee is the long.

Mike is correct that the locals call the right hand tee "short".  Before the longs were poured it was the right hand tee that was concrete.  Nobody really knew where the "long" tee for that hole actually was.

I will make sure to update the bottom of the flyer for next year. I'll change them to make it easier for the local players but I disagree with any logic that one tee is harder than the other.  Did any of the local players play it wrong? Last year the sheet was identical to this year and no one played the hole incorrectly. No one played the hole incorrectly Saturday. I do not feel bad. During the player meeting I made sure to state very clearly and repeated several times about playing the right tee while facing the basket.

I believe it was a local that convinced his card (and the next card) to play the wrong tee.

The instructions were clear.  Not only were they stated during the players meeting, they were printed on the course routing sheet included with every card.  Anyone who played the wrong tee, especially if convinced by others to do so deserved the penalty.  Hopefully it will teach them all a lesson to pay attention and not rudely talk to their friends during the players meeting.

One thing that might be considered, however, is to update the routing to declare the soccer field next to 14 o.b.  I know of at least one person who threw into the field while a soccer game was in progress.

The instructions were clear, both (1) when stated at the players meeting & (2) on the hand-out.

That being said, on the upper day why not play "the pro tee" both rounds?  (The left tee on hole #2 was the second tee installed and is considered the long/pro tee for that hole by us locals.)

Every other hole was played from the same tee both rounds on Saturday.  While the two tees on #2 are slightly different, why add any possible confusion by making #2 different?

i agree - the sheets were available prior to the T and were made available to every group

the local in our group commented on the difference

but if we were in IN you could spark up every hole and not take a penalty
but if we were in WI you could crack a beer on every hole and not take a penalty

guess the people who were stroked should count it as a learning experience rather than complain about it

i dueced from the long and hit the first tree on the short (saved the par though)

Regarding tees for Hole #2:this same kind of thing happened at Indiana States regarding the temp. holes, and it bils down to the same thing, pay attention & learn to read! How can you go wrong with a printed handout?
It was even worse in IN because the SCORECARD had the holes listed correctly, so when you got to 13? I thin k on the Red course, you should've noticed when you put scores for 12 that the next hole was "A".

Another great run, really fun IOS. Was nice to have a really fun group for the 2nd round and see a buddy from WI make it down. I didn't win prizes but got bragging rights and free food from my other friend, so I came out a winner anyway. Thanks to Brett, the Brakels, Krupicka, and everyone else that helped out.

I noticed today that Chris Jordan's PDGA # is listed as 29500 for Aurora's tourney on Saturday. His correct pdga# is 29506.
