Title: The Illinois Open is Deaf Friendly!!!
Post by: Jon Brakel on April 17, 2007, 05:12:34 PM
As we have in the past, we continue to offer course routing sheets to all the deaf players that play the IOS. In addition, Becky and I have taken 20 weeks of sign language class and would like to practice. If there's anything else we can do to help out our deaf players, please let us know.

The '5'  hands, palms out and arms raised rather high, are positioned somewhat above the line of vision. The arms move abruptly forward and up once or twice. An expression of pleasure or surprise is usually assumed.

This deaf disc golfer has relocated to Springfield after living in Elgin for awhile.

He has plans to make the A tier at River City Rumble and Rockford with vacation time.

I have cut down on my travels for disc golf. Gotten married, bought a roof and have a steady paycheck now.

Summer is the worst time of the year job-wise. :o(

Doesnt stop me from advertising and hoping more deaf disc golfers take the initiative.  Keep up the good work guys

We might have a new deaf disc golfer for 2008.  In January I lost most of the hearing in my left ear.  I had an ear infection and was on anti-biotics.  When it cleared up, the hearing did not come back.  The ear doctor isn't sure why or whether it will come back.  The "good" ear tests at about 75% of normal.  I don't know how deaf you have to be to be counted as deaf, but I'm at less than half now.

I saw the ear doctor again yesterday.  The good news is there is nothing wrong with my auditory nerve.  So whenever they invent affordable bionic ears, I'll have good wiring to hook it up to.  The bad news is the doctor thinks the hearing loss is permanent.  He says that if the ear problem is caused by a virus or an autoimmune disorder, this happens sometime.

I'm still in denial.  I figure everyone might as well know, just so that some of you will remember to shout at me until I can afford hearing aids.   ;D  Don't feel sorry for me.  I can still hear.  Just turn up the volume some.

Hearing aids are really expensive.  I'll have to get by on 1/2 normal volume for awhile.  I think IOS entry fees are going to have to go up this year.   ;)  :D

If my wife is  correct, I am going deaf as well. She says I never hear her anymore. Maybe it is not a virus, just being married, that is causing the hearing loss.

Bruce: I just fixed a little typo is all.

I didn't hear that.  :) Sorry to get this news.  Good luck with your hearing.  From the rest of our prespective its somewhat rerereshing to know that you are not ignoring us. :D  One of my mothers in law (long story) is a perennial yaker.  She is always on the phone and always filling open space. She has experienced  serious hearing issues in the last few years and this has been a very difficult situation for her.  She has had to outfit phones ( which are an attachment to her body) and has had to work to communicate.  My father in law ( sensitive sort that he is) just yells more.
