Title: Lake County, IL
Post by: CEValkyrie on May 30, 2007, 07:45:11 PM
The HotBed of disc golf! Some fantastic designs out there and home of the 9-holer.

Rated best to worst.

1. Fairfield Park--Round Lake
2. Adler Park--Libertyville
3. Warren Township--Gurnee
4. Bevier Park--Waukegan
5. Central Park--Grayslake
6. Willow Stream--Buffalo Grove
7. Fink Park--Highland Park
8. Keller Park--Deerfield
9. Danny Cunniff Park--Highland Park
10. Twin Creeks Park--Buffalo Grove
11.  Leo Leathers Park--Mundelein

Bevier will probably move up to #2 on my list once it expands to 18 holes.

I think Cunniff deserves a little bit more props even though it is a fairly easy course.  I don't like how hole 4 and 6 share part of their fairways, but it has some holes that require some decent tosses (hole 1, 5 for example).  Eric set up alternate flags for leagues there last Thursday, and it added a bunch of complexity to some of the holes.  Hopefully someday those alternates can become permanent!  I would place this higher than Deerfield even though Deerfield has a couple longer holes.

Other than that I think your list is pretty accurate!

Off topic, I know, but when is this slated to happen? I forgot about it until I read Brett's post.

I would rate the top three as Adler, The Bev and Fairfield in that order. I'll have to see if The Bev surpasses Adler after I play the new holes when they are installed. To me, Adler is the best course in Lake County.

I agree with Jon.  Adler is one of the best public nine hole courses I know of.  If it had concrete tees for the alternates, it would be as good as Wagner.  If it had golf cart rentals it would be as good as Indian Springs!   ;D

To me a 9 hole course can not rate above an 18 hole course.  The quality of holes at Adler and Bevier are much better than the quality of holes at Fairfield.  I would definitely put Bevier above Warren though.  Bevier has 12 holes to Warren's 8.  And its not like Warren's are THAT much better than Bevier's holes.  That is a major debacle by CEValk.  You totally suck at rating courses.

Scrap heap of disc golf!  Best courses in Cook County rated best to worst.

Edgebrook -Chicago- Fly 18 pay to play
South Park- Glencoe -family 9 holer

Why are Cook County golfers are the best long drivers?  They have the longest drive just to get to a decent course.  ;D AAAARRRRRGGGHHH

By that logic then a 12 hole course could never be better than a 15 hole course. I disagree. Playing Adler twice around is better than playing Fairfield once. In that one round at Fairfield you are playing about 4 different holes. At Adler you are playing 7 distinctly different holes for your 18 hole round.

Still, I'd rather play a round at Fairfield than work!

Streamwood is in Cook County, although it's still a longer drive for northsiders than some other courses outside Daleyville.

Clearly you lack understanding of Michler logic.  If you have 100% more holes, then it is an auto-victory.  12 over 8 is not an auto-victory, but it was enough to push it over the edge since the hole quality between Warren and Bevier was not that much different.  I actually think Bevier is more fun than Warren anyways.  15 over 12 is definitely not an automatic winner.

By your logic of playing twice around, we would only need to create one unbelievable hole somewhere to have the best course ever.  Also by your logic, my mom is Female Player of the Year since she is the nicest person I know  :)

Yeah, you are right.  I suspect its 1 or 2 and that Clark Park in Elk Grove Village, which I also neglected, is 3.  Still a scrap heap with just a bit more scrap.

According to a link I found, all of the following are in cook: Summit, Westchester, Bartlett, Oakbrook Olympia Fields, Roselle and Deerfield.

http://www.co.cook.il.us/secretary/HomePage_Links/municipalities_in_cook_county.htm

I can't verify this, but its on the internet, so it must be true!

So, we have a halfway decent smattering or courses.  I've only played half of them, so I can't really rate them.

Using Michler logic:

1. Olympia Fields
2. Summit
3. Bartlett
4. Oakbrook
5. Westchester

Really Oakbrook is the best, but the top 3 have 100% more holes, so....

Haven't played Roselle or Deerfield. 9 holers with a 30min+ drive to them aren't worth me driving JUST to check them out, unless I'm already in the area or there's a tourney.

you aren't missing too much with Roselle or Deerfield.  Deerfield has 8 baskets, holes 3 and 9 share baskets... Roselle has a lot of grumpy people that live nearby and cut the ring at the bottom of the chains as well as the chains themselves... although the park district does like having disc golf there.  Some of holes at both courses are not too bad at all, but it's not a destination type of course like Rockford would be.

Cook County is very large.  There may be  a few more technically in Cook than I previously mentioned.  I consider Oly a Joliet area course.  Its Will County North.  Bartlett and Streamwood are really DuPage North.  Oakbrook and Westchester are reallly DuPage East.  Roselle is a 9 holer near Clark. Whoopie.  Deerfield is Lake County. It is north of County Line Rd. Hence, Lake County.  In any case, you see how high it is on Brett's list.  The reality is that if you stand in my office in downtown Chicago and take a chalk line that is 20 miles long and walk any direction (I am assuming you can walk on water  if you go to the east) you can then make an arc around the city with that line.  Inside the line you will find Edgebrook and Glencoe.  Glencoe is right at the border and might even be over  that line. There is still a whole bunch of nothing for anybody in the middle of Cook County.  Great parks, great forest preserves, great bike paths, great [everything you want] and bupkis for disc golf other than a fly 19 pay to play course and a little family 9 holer way north.  I do  not see any reason to vary from my comment- Scrap heap of disc golf. There is nothing remotely like the much maligned Fairfield anywhere close to the City of Chicago.  The closest, Madison Meadows is about 22 miles from downtown. It is in DuPage County.

If you live on a high altitude plateau, well above the tree line, Palatine would be a great nine holer.  But setting up temporary baskets at Machu Pichu would be even better!   ;D

well done Mukey.  although Bartlett is horrilbe, it is above Summitt.  Summitt is about the least fun you can have playing disc golf.  Also, Deerfield is just north of lake cook rd., and therefore is a lake county course.

I put Summit above Bartlett becaase of it's potential. Once some more clearing gets done, that has the possibility of being a good course.

Bartlett doesn't have any potential.

It hurt to put Olympia Fields as #1. I've played that course a total of 1 time outside the Oly Spring Opener.

clearly you lack the understanding of Brakel logic.  O0

what I'm saying is that it is not the number of holes that make a course good, but the number of good, unique holes that make a course good. So, playing 18 at Fairfield gives you 4 good, unique holes of disc golf. Where as playing nine holes at Adler gives you 7 good, unique holes of disc golf. Of course you wouldn't want to go out there and only play 9 holes so you play another round of 9 which adds zero to the number of unique holes. 0 + 7 = 7 at Adler. 4 = 4 at Fairfield. 7 is bigger than 4 so therefore Adler is the better course!  ;D

I wasn't saying you were wrong.  I live on the north side and work in the loop.  I too deplore the lack of courses nearby.  Your comment merely got me thinking and then i had to go look for more courses to see what was and wasn't technically in Cook county.

I just drove an hour and ten minutes in rush hour traffic to get to leagues at Cuniff.  >:(  I definitely feel your pain.      :)

I've actually enjoyed the discussion. I just felt like having fun. I'm not going to debate any of my choices since every course on this list sux!

I just wish I could take the best hole or trade every one of these courses in for ONE championship style course.

It becomes harder every year to get out and play these terrible courses after taking road trips and playing great courses.

Home of the 9-holer baby! Lake County, IL

I hear these comments. After traveling last year a bit & playing Mokena last weekend(NOT opening debate if that's Championship or not), I always find our local courses sorely lacking. After first seeing the Joliet area courses, while not Championship, they definetly offer uniqueness, the more Northern IL courses bite. Even Lombard, while good for long throws, I find booring.

Gotta back the Michler vs. Brakel logic on this one. I'm no big arm, but I like to be able to throw & at least be able to space out. On a 9 hole course you'll always get backups, but at least with more holes you can have more people playing. Plus, it usually seems that 9 hole courses are more likely to be in a multi-use park, while an 18 will at least have it's own area if in a park.

Best courses in Kane County rated best to worst:

#1 Jericho Lake, Aurora - barely in Kane County
#2 Campton Hills, St. Charles - short, wooded, hilly 9-holer
#3 . . . . . that's it?!?!?!?!?

Oakland County, for three more weeks anyway

Kensington Toboggan - 18
Kensington Tunnel - 24
Seymore Lake - 18
Holly Woods - 7 + 2 or 7 + 11
Addison Oaks - 18
Firefighters - 18
Wagner 9
Starr Jaycee 9
Raintree 9
Baycourt 9
White Acres [private] 9, sort of.
The Farm 9
Milford 9
Squirrel 9

Addison Oaks isn't what it used to be since the redesign.  Neither is Firefighters since they cut down the diseased trees and moved several baskets to the edge of the creek.

Have you ever played Adler? There are plenty of throwing opportunities. The holes at Adler are spaced out much better than any other course in Lake County with the exception of holes 2 and 3. It is a mulit-use park as are ALL of Lake County's courses but they do a good job of keeping the course free of other activities. Adler is no more backed up than Fairfield. I've never waited much at Adler or Fairfield since I like to play in the morning and most disc golfers like to sleep in the morning.  ;)

But Brett is right. Arguing about the best course in Lake County is like arguing about the best smelling pile of dog poop.

Both points granted, disc golfers are generally a sleep in kinda crowd and the "best" in Lake County, or even Chicagoland, is comical.

I live in Lake County so I usually only play Lake County courses.  Here is how I would rank them:

1. Round Lake Beach
2. Adler
3. Waukegan
4. Fink
5. Buffalo Grove
6. Centennial
7. Glencoe
8. Deerfield
9. Mundelein
10. Wildwood

Sorry if these names don't make as much sense to you.  This is what my friends and I call the parks.

PS. I aced hole 3 at Deerfield on Wednesday.  It was awesome.
