What holes/how many rounds are we playing? Or is it dependent on whether the extra holes get done by then?

In 2005 we had 23 participants, last year there were 41 at this tourney.  We are now at 114 club members, how many are coming out to this great event?  Free raffle for a basket, 36 holes of golf, distance and putting competition (with prizes), PDGA points, all for free!  Also three great trophies will be awarded to the three top scores of the day.  Come on out!

Friday August 17

Both the putting & driving contest will start after the tournament & trophies have been awarded.

The putting contest will work like this.

There are 5 spots. You get 2 shots from each spot. Each spot has a point value next to it. The most points possible are 30 if all 10 putts are made. If there is a tie for fisrt place it will be a do or die playoff starting at the first spot.

You get 2 rounds from the 5 spots. Your best of the 2 rounds will count.

1. 15ft. (1pt.)
2. 20ft. (2 pts.)
3. 25ft. (3 pts.)
4. 30ft. (4 pts.)
5. 35ft. (5 pts.)

The driving competition will work like this.

You will get a flag. Write your name on the flag. You will throw 5 drives. Your best drive will be taken. Walk out to your best drive and mark it.  We will measure once all throws have been taken.

Yes, all tags are in play. It'd be nice to see #1 tag one time this year.

Yeah, planning on it - I more or less committed in an earlier post.

And the tees have nothing to do with it.  :D  I even plan on making League this Sunday.

So if the ace pool is rolling over from this tourney to the league on Sundays, is the league ace pool also rolling over to the tourney?

that's an interesting question.  8)

I'm inclined to think that it should either 'roll both ways' or stay separate. How about splitting it between the Putting and Distance winners if no one aces?

i don't have any issues if the $15 or whatever the league ace fund rolls into the tournament with the understanding if no aces are hit then the tournament fund rolls back to league.

I think if nobody hits an ace the $ should be distributed by a CTP like we did at the Club Challenge.  More people get in on the action.  Putting, distance, ace.  With no trees on #1 I figure somebody is going to hit it but in any case, the money should go home that day and not roll over to the league ace fund.

I don't care what you do with the ace pool money.  Just don't pull an FTM.   :o

On an unrelated note, those of you who agree with me that Brett is doing a great job as Club President ought to think about playing pro.  It's only $10.  I won the tournament last year in Advanced so I guess I have to play pro!

I can't speak for Brett, but if we are paying $2 or $3 or $5 for the ace fund or whatever it is, and part of the funding for this event comes from the money that is made from leagues.  I think that the $2.00 would be a nice contribution to the league ace fund and it may help to get more people out to leagues if the fund has a bump.  I rarely make league in the summer but don't have a problem if my $2.00 goes back to league ace fund.

Pony up your ten bucks and you can play with Cen Klimo too!

I'm going to make a trophy disc for "Best Amateur."  This will go to the amateur who shoots the best score, regardless of what division they play.  If there should be a tie for this, the first tie breaker is it goes to the amateur who played in the pro division!   >:D

Check in by 9:00AM
Player meeting at 9:10AM
Tee off at 9:30AM

There was a question at league this morning about tee off times.  The two hot rounds at doubles were -10.  Hole B is now a fun hole, with the clearing to some of the trees and the permanent pin placement it makes it a good hole.  Right now there is no bridge.  The water is high in the creek, maybe it will go down some by Friday.  The new holes across the street are fun.

Come on out!

Just got back from here.  New holes are nice.  We couldn't find the second to last basket.  We found the tee, assumed the basket would be somewhere near the tee for the last  hole over there and didn't see it anywhere.  It's definitely a nice 18 hole course now.  Throw in the alternate tees and you have a full day of disc at one course!

That basket is still not installed even though its been over a month since WPD put in the new holes. I'd assume they have it by now...
We've been using my skill shot every week for doubles. The basket is supposed to be on top of the mound directly west of the last new hole's tee.

I'm sure we'll have one of the club's portable Machs up there for Friday.

I'm going to be there, just please use a different name for me on the pdga page until after the tournament.

I'm also going to bring merch on an "as requested" basis.  So if need something and want me to bring it, just browse the store (paperorplasticsports.com) and email me with what you want.  I can bring Ace Race player packs too, $20.  I have a couple people so far that I'm meeting with, so it shouldn't be a problem pulling stuff and bringing it for anybody.  I also have a ton of stuff not listed, so please email if you don't see what you need!

Thanks to Jon's invitation, I'll be there to rejoin the club and play Open.
Should be fun, especially if Fave Deldberg plays.
I saw Barrett at the MadCityOpen and she said she'd probably play as well.

Questions:
How has Hole B changed?
and
If the green bridge is gone, are the white rocks still there to cross the water?

Thanks in advance,
jimklem

Hey Jim,

B has changed in that the 4 guardian trees up the gut are now gone. Its an open low ceiling shot to get across the creek.
The green bridge is currently floating in the stream. I think the bridge, if we want to continue to use it, needs to be relocated upstream a bit. The lack of proper water movement to the south of the course has led to massive bank erosion & the bridge no longer adequately makes the span.

WPD and/or Com Ed really needs to get on board though and do something about the stream. The water flow at the crossing under the power lines is a trickle compared to what is coming out of the pond.

Thanks Jim. Lets talk on Friday. If B & C are to remain viable holes we need something to get across that stream.

Oh - I didn't answer your question about the riffle. Its pretty much always under water, especially now. Yesterday there was a tip of a rock in the middle poking out, nothing else.

Currently I'm planning on coming down to defend my title.  I do have a minor conflict right now so I'm not 100% positive but I really want to make it happen.  I've been a pretty big supporter of this club for many years now and I do think this Friday outing is a great idea and I've had fun the past two years.

If it is ok with the club and the local law of the land I can also bring down any merch that people might be in need of.  Particular discs, accessories, etc.  Shoot me an e-mail, terry@prodiscgolfer.com if there is something you are looking for.

I am hoping to tee off promptly at 9:30am. We are playing 2 rounds of 20 holes. I'm hoping to take a quick lunch break then get started again. I believe we were done by 4pm last year. With 3'somes things should move pretty quickly.

Just to let everyone know ahead of time I will be grouping pros with adv players like last year for  the first round.  2nd round all players will be sorted by score. In reality I am running this like 1 big division.

Just to let ams playing pro know.  If you are an Am & accept cash you can still play am if rated under 955. If you accept that cash and are under 955 you can continue to play Am at D,C,B, & A-Tiers. You cannot play Majors as an Am. See the Competition Manual Section 2.4 for more information.

Playing pro will not change your amateur status. Accepting money or prizes for playing pro WILL change your amateur status. You will be a pro. Currently pros with ratings below 955 can play in tiered tournaments. Pros can not play in Majors (Worlds, Am Nats, etc.) in an amateur division.

I think Brett's explanation is clear, but this is a different way of saying the same thing. Some people will understand better reading Brett's post and some may understand better reading this one.

Congratulations to Tom for taking first and Brett for taking second place. Brett and Tom are great representatives for disc golf in this area. It is nice to see them do so well. Congrats to Jason Rose for winning advanced. There were 3 aces that were hit.  Steve Mullens hit hole one and along with his winnings received a free club membership for 2008. .  Congrats to Adrian Sr. and Carla for having the most improved rounds. They both improved their scores by 8 strokes.  Chris Jordan improved by 7 strokes.

Thanks to Brett for putting in the time, energy, and effort to put this event together. Jon did an excellent job getting the scores posted.  Mirth did a great job getting all the new memberships listed.  Thanks to Terry for bringing down Jacob and Nathan Loper, the club is now right around 135 members.  Sergio did a great job with the bag tags. Serg can you post an attachment for your bag tag spreadsheet?  Adrian Sr. was very helpful in a bunch of different areas.

It was a great event. What does everyone think of the new 6 holes across the street?

I concur.  I liked all of them and thought A was the best.  Given what there is to work with out there, I thought they were really well laid out and the pin placements/elevated pins added a nice challenge in lieu of trees.  By themselves, perhaps not standout (with the possible exception of A), but they lend nice balance to the course as a whole.  It's now a legit and good 18 holer.  Thanks for all the work everyone put in to make it happen.

Here is the final bag tag challenge sheet. I've done a little editing to take out the tags that were not there ( or weren't put in  ;) )

I need to publicly apologize to Terry Miller and David Barish. As myself and Brian were placing the new tag assignments we missed them and messed up the numbers a little. MOST of the people did receive the tag they were supposed to receive. There were, I believe, two tags that were not picked up. I think Mirth has them.

Anyhow, attached is the .xls document.

Congrats to the winners and thanks to everyone involved for putting in the time to run this event. Beautiful day for golf!

nice to see that 4 of the top 10 tags surfaced.  That 8 has been passed around quite a bit, that's the one that I first had when they were handed out (but I didn't have it for long!) 56 out of 61 players turned in their bag tag, and I know that I'm one of the 5 that did not turn it in.  It didn't help that I showed up minutes before it was time to go out to the tees since my supposed to be travel time of 1 hr, 10 minutes turned into just under 2 hours.  I wonder what the other 4 had :)  I have a high number, so it wouldn't have helped out anyone at the top anyway.

Since there is no entry fee i'd like to keep it to 1 amateur division. For players wanting more points this helps drastically. Besides the $10 entry fee for pros this really was 1 big division. Would there be a benefit for adding more divisions?

I think running the tournament like one big division makes it the Club Championship. It makes it different and stands out from all the other tournaments.

I think we should consider running it like a Swedish tournament and have everyone play Pro with a $5 entry fee for all. This is truly the ams paying for the pro payout, but we would know upfront where our money is going. With the way that Brett pairs as many groups with one pro it would be a way to say "Thanks for the lesson". Brett could still pair as many groups as possible with a real pro even if everyone else was also in the pro division.

It definitely does stand out. A thread was started on PDGA.com about  the crazy names I added to the tour page. Number of visits to the DISContinuum site doubled the 4 days prior to the event. Sticking to web stats. July & August have set record usage for the website. with over 5,000 unique visitors. Prior to that we had not broke 4,000. We have a shot at 6,000 for August.

Since there is no entry fee and no payout, there is really no reason to break up the amateur field into divisions.  What 60 players on a Friday says to me is, "You don't need to change a thing."  The only thing I'd change is the name, from Discontinuum Invitational to Discontinuum Club Championship.

I agree that everyone grouped together is better. No worrying about ratings and it lets you see how you stack up against other club members, regardless of division.

Serg,

There is no need to apologize.  I certainly know what it's like to be running something and then all of a sudden something doesn't go perfectly.  People didn't turn in tags, people picked them up early or late or whatever.  I am really not upset in any way, shape, or form about it.  I won't be doing any club or Sergio bashing over this.  Disc golf is meant to be fun and the people that get worked up over the little things really need to get a grip on disc golf and life in general.

Thanks for all of the hard work that you do for every single club and event around the Midwest.  You truly step up (even when not asked) and that's impressive to me.  I know that's how I got my feet wet with the behind the scenes of disc golf nearly 12 years ago and that taught me to ask questions before assuming anything or complaining.  Thanks again!

Ter

PS - I did leave with tag 12 that day because it was the 3rd lowest tag sitting on the ground.  Maybe I should have gotten 4 or 8 or whatever but it really doesn't matter to me.

I wanted to put this in as a new post versus it getting lost in a response about the bag tag stuff...

As I said on Friday, I have been a regular member and supporter of that club for many years.  I enjoy coming down to Bevier Park in particular but I also enjoy the format of this event and I see all of the positive things that come from the Discontinuum Club.

I think Brett is one of the most stand up guys in all of disc golf.  He is a promoter, an ambassador, and a fierce competitor on top of it.  I can't thank him enough for the time and energy he has volunteered at Am Worlds and all of his other disc golf endeavors.

Thank you to the Club and everyone associated with it.  I am glad to be a member and I am happy to relinquish my title to Tom Schodtler as the new Club Champion.  Tom and Brett both played pretty well that second round and it was a good battle to watch.  Maybe I'll see you guys later this fall or early next spring!

It was a geat day of disc golf! Thank you to all the club members!

I have the #8 tag. I thought that was the one I was supposed to get. I will bring it to Parkside on Saturday and we can switch tags and get it all right. Honestly I like having the higher tags....makes it a little more fun. I wouldn't have wanted to sort all that out. You two did an awesome job and if there were only a few mistakes, not bad at all. See you Saturday.

when the golden child called and reminded me she had guitar practice at 6
first time in months that her teacher and her did not have other things going
and i would have hated to have her miss another lesson

got to say thanks to my buddy who dropped what he was doing with 20 minutes notice
and drove her to and from guitar that night

i think i got home around 730 after stopping at dominicks for 5 dollar pizza

Jim Klem "Newbie". Now that's funny!  ;D

Yes, I actually signed on to say that I will probably be uploading them tonight. I've worked late every day this week so far but today is looking good for getting out on time.

We had a brief power outage at work late in the work day yesterday that played havoc with our phone system and then it took a while to get home where I found out we had no internet access! Good intentions and all that...

I'll try again tonight!

Jim, your avatar is AWESOME!!!  That's my favorite movie of all time.  Funny how it is actually more relevant today than when it was made (around 20 years ago??).

what did people think of the soccer field hole ?

ob on the right

tough pin placement with the path in front of the basket and water behind

both rounds people in my group went ob into the ball field

second round i came up short on the drive but got my second shot past the path to the left of the
basket  i should have made the putt but didnt

i liked the risk/reward aspect of the hole

playing .25 skins the second round actually helped me focus a little more

won   $ 2.5    paid for the tolls on the way home  LOL

I liked that hole, although I messed up my drive and THANKFULLY hit the fence on the baseball field (lefty hyzer).  It had a good bounce off the fence, threw an ok approach that I thought was going to go in the drink, but there was more grass out there then I realize.  My putting was on for once (all except for one obvious putt), and I nailed a 20' putt (something that is no where near an always easy putt for me).

I preferred the other hole with the soccer field OB on the left, but that's because I'm a lefty :)

Thanks, Jon!
And Thank You, Discmonkey.
Yes, Brazil might be one of the most strange, brilliant, and disturbing movies in the last 20 years.
Oops - 25 years.

AirSpuds, that hole was GREAT!
Even being a lefty, the OB didn't bother me, but the water just in back of the basket was scary.
I hope we keep playing that one every year!
