Title: St Charles - Campton... Course is terrible now
Post by: danknugs on July 13, 2007, 04:59:38 AM

Wow did they really take the fun away from this course.  It used to be a very fun and very challenging 9 hole course thru the woods, now they have taken down so many trees and bushes that its way too easy. I will stay away from this course and advise only beginners to play this truly rookie course...

I don't know, I don't think it's THAT bad.  I went last wednesday after hearing about the tree clearings on this board, and I didn't notice anything too drastic except the one on 5, and i agree it sucks they took it out.  But other than that the course pretty much seems the same to me.  Also, some kids there told me they had to do some tree work because of a storm.  Apparently a storm knocked a buch of trees down, so maybe that tree was already damaged and they had to take it down.  Either way I don't know what the deal was, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

They took a tree out on hole #2 that makes it a guaranteed birdie unless you somehow choke real bad... #5 was effected the most, this was my favorite hole with a small tree in the middle and a huge tree about 1/2 way down that was hard to get around, now its easy to get close to the hole with a good shot. #7 effected bad as well, it is a guarantee to get up the hill when before it was semi hard to miss a tree and get it up the hill

i really dont think that you need to say things like that unless you built the course, i understand about the trees, at my course we lost 25 willows that were crucial to the challenge of the course, so now weve made about 5 alternates to keep it fun and challengeing

Without criticism we would never get better courses

So unless you put a course in you can't critique it?    :bootyshake:

It's one thing to critique a course where decisions could have been better made and it's another to complain about a course where volunteers are busting their butts to make it work and you don't lift a finger.

I think anyone should feel free to critique any course they want to on this board. Be prepared to accept the consequences though because the street runs both ways. I don't have any problem with anyone critiquing any of the courses that I have helped with. I would hope that everyone using this board would attempt to communicate in a grown up way and not take the low road.

St. Charles was a compromise design by Gary.  It was installed and is maintained by the St. Charles Park District.  Gary's design made excellent use of the trees and terrain available in a very limited amount of space.  The radical removal and pruning of trees far exceeded any storm damage and took away much of the challenge of the course.  I think Pitner had it right when he advised voicing suggestions/complaints to the Park District.  Their contact list can be found here (http://www.st-charlesparks.org/links/staffdirectory.htm).  There is also a suggestion box at the course near the map.

Guys im sorry to anyone who took offense to my comments. I appreciate all the hard work done on the courses to make it enjoyable for everyone. I do feel constructive criticism can only help in the long run and thats what i was doing. I just think they made the course way too easy now. I thought the course was perfect for the amount of space being used before. But now it has taken the fun out of playing Campton in my opinion by making it a beginner course. Just my opinion

I finally got a chance to play this course a couple of days ago, and I can see why everyone complained about hole #5.  I thought it was a really neat course, although hole #2 is silly and not necessary.  I completely understand about the goofy teeboxes now as well!

I didn't have my bag with me... instead I only had one disc, a Soft Wizard.  It worked out quite well for me, and I think I took a +1 or +2, not bad for first time on the course using only one disc that hasn't been used a whole lot yet.  I came pretty close to acing hole 9 too... that's a neat hole.

It would be worthwhile for me to go back there if I'm in the area, but not a destination stop... would be nice if the parking lot was bigger and the people there weren't so chucky.  I only had one disc with me and no bag, does that make me a chucker? hehe ;)

The day I was out there a guy was randomly shouting out to all the people walking by "Go to Aurora... play that course, why do you keep playing this one, etc etc" lol.

Yea hole #5 was one of my favorite holes on the course until they took down the tree in the middle of the fairway and the real big tree 1/2 way to the hole. Hole #2 is a joke and completely unnecessary like you said. Holes 8,9 are my 2 favorite on this course now. Like i said its a good beginner course but for those looking for a challenge I wouldnt waste the time going to campton

I just want to go on the record saying that although the tree work did affect some holes negatively, I still think it is a fun course to play.  I mean, it was never a major course to begin with, It's a little 9 holer in the woods, always was always will be.  The tree work affected 2 holes, and not much at that.  I think you guys are way overexaggerating what was done, just my 2 cents.  I live about a 1/2 hour away in Aurora, and I still love playing campton once in a while as a change of pace from Jericho and Eagle Ridge.  It's different and it's a fun little course.  I encourage people to come out and play it if they haven't already (just don't let the hippie kids bother you, they're annoying but harmless  :D )because either way it is still a pretty unique course for this area.
