I will be the TD of the event.

If you want a good weekend of Central Illinois disc golf play Springfield  on Saturday and Bloomington-Normal on Sunday. 4 Courses in 2 days. Can't be that.

Sounds like a sweet weekend of disc golf. If Brett's running it you know it'll be a quality event. Hopefully we get the same weather we had last year for the Springfield-Homie weekend. I've jsut got to stay away from Avanti's!!   :puke:

Just to let everyone know Bloomington-Normal is very excited to have a PDGA event coming to town. Normal Park District contacted me last winter.  I was trying to run this tournament in the spring but there were limited opitons & my schedule was booked. It took me a while to finalize details in order to get things rolling this fall.

Within 24 hours of finalizing details i've been contacted by a business in BN & the BN Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. What this will lead to I don't know. Disc Golfers are wanted in B-N. I hope many of you can join us.

Brett,
I am currently down here in Bloomington/Normal going to grad school. If you need any help please let me know. I kind of have an in with one of the local dealers, Alamo II. They carry one of the largest stocks of Innova that I have seen so I might be able to get them to sponser at least something. I will let you know as soon as I talk to the boss there. If there is anything else that you would need then let me know. I am sure me or Dana would be able to do anything that you asked of us.  We are starting to get a larger turnout at our local league so I am sure I could get some ideas and stuff from there. Also we might be able to come up with some temp holes at Maxwell if we can get some extra baskets. Not sure if it was something you thought of but there is alot of room out there to make at least a few holes. Good to see that the parks department is in on it too. If you want just send me an Email and we get some ideas together. I am very excited that this is happening and I am sure a lot of people around here will be in on it too!
Thanks!!
Jeremy Orr

Jeremy,

I appreciate the help. The main thing right now is getting flyers out. I'll have the flyers done by Monday. If you guys can get them up at both courses and stores that sell discs that would be awesome. I have thought about 2 temp holes at Maxwell but not sure if it's going to happen or not. The store mgr from the Alamo 2 e-mailed me and I have not heard back from hit yet. Some good publicity might help.

Thanks for the help!

Brett,

I also wanted to jump in with a helping hand where I can. We've met once or twice through Rob Strasser at tourneys. I play along with Jeremy and Dana in town. I also run admin on our www.bndisc.com site. I'm in the process of posting the tourney details and links that are available. We've been getting 200 hits per day on our site so the traffic will be good for promoting the event. Certainly feel free to call on us in town to help out or pound the pavement. We are all interesting in making the event a success. Several of us play in the Peoria league also so we can talk it up while playing there as well.

Thanks for getting this rolling and putting the work into a tourney.

Ben Douglas
admin@bndisc.com

Dana I like where you're head is at on possible temp holes at Maxwell. That tunnel has been begging for a throw of some kind for a long time.

2 temps holes at Maxwell it is. We'll do 18 at PJ Irvin & 20 at Maxwell.

If you could add the tournament information to your website it would be much appreciated. I'll have a flyer posted by Monday.

Another issue  is moving the pins. I'll have a list of locations in the next few weeks. I would appreciate it if someone from B-N could coordinate getting the pins moved.

I'll talk with Dan Nagle and Rob Strasser regarding pin settings when you have them. Dan has keys for Maxwell and Rob has keys for PJ and it shouldn't be an issue to move the pins prior to the tourney. They move fairly often for league so it shouldn't be a problem.

I've posted information and links on bndisc.com.

I'll see about bringing paper copies to post at both courses in town also. I'll talk with Dustin Fee who runs the Peoria league and see about getting copies posted at their many courses also.

We are in the process of finalizing the room rate at the local Microtel...  So if folks wanted to come down from Chicagoland for the Saturday event in Springfield for rounds at Douglas Park and a newly revamped Lincoln Park they would only be a 50 minute ride to to Maxwell for the Sunday rounds...

More info to follow...

We have negotiated a $50.00 room rate with the local Microtel in Springfield if you want to come down for the Saturday event in Springfield and stay for the Bloomington event on Sunday.

There are 8 of these rooms available as well as some large suites for $65.00.

More info to follow on how to get the rooms, if there is interest.

Brett-

Parking at PJ is going to be a problem.  Also, there is a bunch of OB that need to be marked off (as you know).  I like the 07PW Flag idea...are you going to be marking the property lines along holes 2,3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, and 18? Along a few of those holes there is a downed fence-line that we use, but it is not all that 'defined'.  You could make the ob line the parking lot for hole 10.  If you dont make the corner for hole 9, the ob fence line is not far off...You might want to talk to Rob about all the property/ob lines, he'll know more than me.

Dana,

Do you know if we can park on the street in that subdivision? I don't recall seeing no parking signs. Also, could you check for parking signs at the 2 apartment buildings on Morris Ave? That might be an option.

As far as the OB i'll make sure the ob is well defined. If you guys want permanent OB I have some ideas for you. It's pretty simple and you'd be able to use the same for now on.

PM me your cell & rob's # if you have it.

Thanks
Brett

Brett-

Tomorrow I'll try and scout out around the park for some other parking.  There are 2 entrances up near 18, also, maybe back near 12 (basket) and 13 (tee) may have some options.  Not sure about the APT complex, I'll have to check.

Will there be a drop-zone on hole 14 at PJ? If you go OB near the road, it is a pretty dangerous spot..you are at a bit of a blind spot from incoming traffic

On 13 & 14 there will not be a drop zone. I'll make sure to mention that if your disc out of bounds or near the road you can take a reasonable 2 meters off the road so you are not playing right on the edge of the road instead of the usual meter relief.

Post by: dana on September 12, 2007, 06:38:21 PM
K, keep in mind that on 14 you can end up right next to the road but it is right next to the hill going up towards the basket- tough to go 2 meters in.

I've only seen a few discs land back there but it is pretty dangerous..

This is really a great article. Good job on working up some publicity for this tournament. It is great to see disc golf involved with park districts.  It is always good to have facilities that bring people out to the parks.  Nice to get a quote from Dana.  Excellent job.  This event should have a nice big turnout.  Might be a good idea to prereg.

On top of all the awesome stuff that Brett is going to do with this tournament, I wanted to help promote his event by highlighting some of the CTP stuff that is going to be given away!  For the 18 CTP's at PJ Irvin, every CTP pack will have TWO discs (1 black Wizard and 1 black Warlock in most cases), a coupon for discounted merch, probably a can hugger/koozie or two, and maybe even some mini's :)  There will be some specialty extras in some of the CTP's, but I'll keep that as a mystery to get more people to come on down!

Final results are up with unofficial ratings. Check the results for errors as I was getting all the info via cell phone. Let Brett know if there are any errors.

i see 2 mistakes from the open division-

it was scratch (chris) starkey, not barry
tom m. shot a 53, not a 63 for the 2nd round

thanks for getting the scores up so fast!

AWESOME event today.  It was very encouraging to see so many people come out!  I had a feeling that there was going to be a good attendance :)

The courses were well maintained, and considering the stuff they were given to work with, it was laid out VERY well.

Brett, that hole 10A was BRUTAL (especially for lefties!)  Mix in with that a cross country team that didn't really care that there was a disc golf tournament going on (I was informed of this), and it then lead to a REALLY long backup (3 groups).  I wound up with a 5 on that hole, but I was VERY pleased with picking up a 4 on the long 650 footer.  Tough, tough hole!

I even came within inches of finally being able to post in the Ace man cometh thread lol.  I doinked off the basket's bucket on hole 15 in the 2nd round.  That could have been a 285' foot ace, something like that!

Thanks for a great event!

Scott

Great event.  Fun courses. Big turnout. 78 players. Lots of fun.  Rob Strasser tore it up.  Good karma for doing all the work on the courses in the B-N area.  Brett did a great job putting this event together with the help of the Bloomington-Normal disc golfers.  Thanks to Jon for getting the scores posted so quickly. I am looking forward to playing those courses again.

Fun courses, fun folks, very well run, great to meet and play a round w/ Brett's dad.

I'd take either of those courses over anything closer to here than Kenosha; Irvin in particular. The first temp hole at Maxwell is easily the best hole between here and Peoria. And it's almost *in* Peoria.

I had a couple of flat rounds, could've scored better if I'd made any putt outside of 20 ft, but the other 2 old guys ahead of me took turns tearing it up so it really wouldn't have mattered. I had a great time regardless.

Thanks Brett and everyone else involved.

This post is going to be rather long. I have to thank quite a few people.

I want to start off by thanking the course sposors
Paper or Plastic Sports-> www.paperorplasticsports.com
The Alamo II-> www.thealamoii.com
Combined they donated $500++ worth of merchandise for CTP's. WOW!!!
Thank you Scott & Larry for your support.
Players, please support these sponsors. They will continue to support events you play if you support them.

Rob Strasser and Dan Nagle have done a fantastic job getting 2 quality courses installed in Bloomington-Normal. They moved pins, marked OB, and had course information sheets ready to go. Thank you guys!

www.BNdisc.com and all the local players of B/N. You opened your arms and immediately made me feel welcome. I was quite worried about being treated as an outsider. Thank you for all of your help promoting the event and donating your time in any way! Also, thanks for the scoring competition. Another bag of goodies adding value to the event.  I was able to watch my dad play his first event ever. That is very special to me.

Thank you Jon Brakel! Having scores uploaded to the tour page is a big bonus. Thank you for your time!!!

I want to thank anyone who helped me run the event. Disc golf events are not run by 1 person. They are run by many volunteers. I had some great help. Thank you for donating your time. Without you guys this event would not happen. Thanks to my dad for making the trophy pictures!

Thank you Bloomington & Normal Park Districts. Your have very well kept courses. Thank you for allowing a disc golf tournament. Here are the e-mail addresses to my contacts. Please e-mail them and thank them.
Cary Frey-> cfrey@normal.org
John Kennedy-> jkennedy@cityblm.org

Players, thank you for coming. I really expected around 50 or less players. 78 blew me away. If you have any feedback please send an e-mail to president@discontinuum.org In the future i'll try to have an expanded selection of merchandise.

I am sorry if I missed anyone. Your time and support is much appreciated!

For anyone that attended the event a saw the trophies or had the pleasure of winning one, what did you think? Should I do these again in the future?

I think this was seriously the first event I've played in where I didn't play so poorly that I didn't even think of a trophy and the trophy was not a disc.  Honestly I think it was kinda cool.  It was probably a cost effective thing for you to do, it is a nice little memento, and since a lot of people don't throw their trophy discs, it's a nice thing to add to the rest of the collection (for those that are priviledged to play well enough to have a collection!).

If you were to do another tournament in B/N, I would perhaps suggest not doing a picture of hole 10 again and do a different hole instead (just to prevent repetition).  I think the majority of the people will react to a "Show me the money" mentality to get some free merch, and then the trophy - whatever it may be - is just a slight perk at the end.

I would definitely change the picture from one event to another. The good think is my dad loves taking pictures. Maybe a picture of the tunnel hole at Maxwell next year.

*shakes fist at tunnel hole*  Sweet hole except for the wait... silly cross country runners not caring about other people that are there trying to use the same area. (and from what I understand it wasn't an actual cross country meet, they were just checking out the course)  If you hadn't heard that's why it took so long for the final cards to come in.  It was a tough hole with a lot of discs that went into the wet muck, and then delayed beyond the disc golfer's control.  I think we had to wait for 3 or 4 groups, and it was the 4th hole before we were done.

dude i was there when the cross country runners went by and it wasn't that big of a deal.  there was a little bit of a backup becuase it was a hard hole preceded by a bunch of deuce holes.  we were out of there by 5pm which is pretty fast for a 2 round tourney at 2 different courses with 78 players.

brett and everyone involved with the event thank you. I had a blast at the event, I also cant wait for another chance at the tunnel hole next year. I will conquer it!!!!!  Tournament was ran very smoothly and we were out of there quickly. I can't emphasize how fun it was and that I will be back every year you plan on running it. Thanks again.

From what I saw, the runners weren't a problem on the tunnel hole. When I got to the hole, there was only a two-group back-up. The four-group back-up was initially created by an Open player on the bottom card who hit the early trees, threw from the creek without realizing it was out-of-bounds, and was told by Al that he threw from out of bounds when he was halfway down the fairway. Much chaos and hilarity ensued shortly thereafter. I'm still not sure what the final score or ruling were, and I rode home with the guilty party.

The only change I would make to this hole would be to clearly demarcate the OB line or simply declare any water in the creek to be casual and the opposite bank to be in-bounds. Otherwise, I thought both temp holes were a nice change of pace. Well run event, Brett!

ok, the story must have gotten worse by the time we got there.  Whoever was sitting in the lawnchairs by that hole were really talking up how bad the wait was because of the cross country runners.

I did, however, have at least a 20-minute wait on the hole, so that made things a little tough to get back in gear after having a great round up to that point.

I'm trying my best not to complain, but to explain why I DID hear some other people complaining about why it took so long from when their card was turned in to when the ceremonies started.  I'm guessing they were not involved in any backups.

I was quite happy with when everything ended, and I was treated very well with the Wizards and other Gateway stuff that I had available for sale.  I even sold some quad shocks :)

It was a great day, no question.

The reason for the delay from when some of the cards were turned in to when the awards ceremony began is the fault of one card, which had three players.  There was a dispute of the score of one of the players on one of the holes.  They argued among themselves for 20 minutes before turning their card in to tourney central. That is something beyond the control of the TD or any other person involved with the tourney.

I had a bad time on 10a not due to the back up but because I made two lousy shots.  No complaint and no excuse. I thought it was a very cool hole that was challenging but fair.  I caused a bit of a delay when my champ roc went into the little pocket of water.  There was no way I was going to leave it.  Yes, there was a signfiicant wait when my group got there.  I took a short nap.  We waited about 20 minutes. There were at least four groups ahead of us.

On 10A I need to either mark a line splitting the creek or let people play no matter where it lies unless it's totally surrounded by water. That will be taken care of next year.

I would love to see this event grow and run all divisions on one day using both courses at the same time. I'd limit the field to 144 players having rounds at both PJ & Maxwell going on.

TD report has been sent in & the fees are paid. This tourney should be on the next ratings update.
