Title: What's in your iPod while playing golf?
Post by: Mukey on September 13, 2007, 09:40:25 PM
For those of you who listen to music, on whatever player or format , as long as while golfing, what do you listen to & do you change it depending on how you're playing?

I personally like some rock to start out, David Lee Roth Van Halen, Metallica-before the black album, Megadeth, etc. While I'm playing I like something less guitar driven, but upbeat, especially during slower tournament rounds.

I don't use an ipod while playing but if I did it would be the 3 albums of Bowling for Soup that I have on my ipod.

I never woulda suspected that such a tech-savvie group would be so anti-ipod...

What could be better than being able to listen to a tune that pumps you up, chills you out, or is jsut great while doing something you love?

I would prefer to communicate with the other people on my card who are doing something they love instead of shutting them out. To me an ipod says don't talk to me. Part of the dg experince for me is enjoying the people with whom I am playing. I enjoy the sounds around me, I like to hear the leafs blow in the breeze, I like the sound of the birds, I enjoy hearing the crack of the plastic hit a tree (long as it isn't my disc), and I like the sound of the crunching of the leaves and branches when walking through wooded courses.

People don't have enough direct communication as it is, I have no desire to isolate myself when involved in a competion, and for me, a social activity.

Although if an ipod can drown out the voice in my head that tells me I am going to miss my next putt, I may try one.

i got a zen 6 gig but i dont use it on the course
more for the commute to work and walking the dog
if my new dog sees me going for teh headphones it gets really excited

during disc i got to concentrate on disc
i would think that the wires would add another dimension to distraction

i did see someone in a T put theirs on after getting into an argument with another member of the group
at the two minute warning - it helped him but the argument threw the other member of the group off

I can see both sides of this one.   I keep the pod in the car when I am at a tournament. However, I really like to go to a park alone with the iPod and let loose.  I will listen to just about anything.  I like Led Zeppelin when I am practicing but it depends on the mood. The thing that makes jam bands annoying makes them good for disc golf.  You get into a groove and keep on going.  Mr. Blotto has worked for me.

I wasn't so much stating in a tourney round, because I agree with Tom's points and comraderie is nice. Practicing I love it. Tried actually playing with it in a tournament for the first few holes of the second round, but after a few bogies put it away. It all depends on how the day is going. Sometimes everything can seem distracting.

I also like to interact with my group and enjoy the natural surroundings/sounds that disc golf offers.

I don't get the whole i-pod thing.

One downside to using an ipod is that you can't hear a skeeter by your ear, I have a few bites due to that...

The male mosquitoes are the ones that make noise and they don't bite. The females are silent and they are the ones that do all the biting.

All we know is that Jon has been listening to a lot of Barry White. I know Becky does not get the iPod thing.  Its just that I am curious as to what she is listening to. Any hockey fan will tell you that as long as they don't draw blood its not a major penalty.

Interesting topic!  It depends on my mood whether or not I put my iPod on.  I will never have it on if playing with others.  Sometimes I like to tune in, sometimes I like enjoy the sounds of nature.  Nature is one of the reasons I find disc golf so enjoyable & find regular golf courses so artificial.  If I do listen to music, I'm with Barish.  The jam bands are where it's at.
