Title: Quote misbehaving...
Post by: pickax on September 14, 2007, 04:54:13 AM
I was trying to quote a message today and kept getting a green bar at the top that says "Loading..." and then nothing happens. Is anyone else encountering this?

Nope.
I learned (from the webmaster or someone) that you need to hit 'reply' and then 'insert quote' on whatever message you want to quote. Which is misleading (you'd think just hitting 'quote' would do it.)

Same here.

It has worked in the past, I probably just need to reboot my Windows box later today. I think I've had it up too many days in a row.

Are you running Vista?  Vista doesn't run in Windows.  :D

I get the aforementioned green Loading bar. Its a bug somewhere inside SMF, Joomla, and/or the SMF <-> Joomla bridge.... Inserting quotes into the quick reply box is an Ajax thing, while creating a new reply then clicking insert quote on the replies you want is a javascript thing.

The script error that comes up is Object Required on line 30, character 18 of the same url of the topic that you are viewing (index.php, option=com_smf, itemid=26)

The green bar appears in IE7, but not IE6.  It errors our in XP w/ IE6, XP w/ IE7, and Vista w/ IE7.  Firefox it looks like just shows the loading bar but doesn't explain why it doesn't do any more than that.

I'd be interested to hear on how you do the quote Jon and David - if it is quoting after clicking reply, or clicking Quote from the top right of a message post.

The bug has been there since mirth changed up the layout of the website.

I'm using IE7 on an XP machine at work and the new version of Firefox on an XP machine at home. I just click on "Quote" from the top right of a post. Never have had any problems with that.

Hmm, what service pack? (although that more than likely is not the problem).  Is your pop up blocker activated/deactivated?

This one is tough to troubleshoot!

No, its a known bug between Joomla & the SMF bridge. SMF uses Ajax to do the quote insertion into the quick reply box while the full blown reply page uses Javascript to handle the quotes. IIRC it has to do with SMF putting out headers before Joomla does and then the two conflicting... I'll have to switch the template I'm using on the site to see if I can get the forum default one to work for me.

I'm just curious as to why Jon is reporting that he can get it to work just fine when it's a common problem for all of the rest of us.  *something* has to be different.  It's the software tester in me that is irked about why one person has success while the rest do not.  Software testing is my profession and helps pay for my disc-golf money-sucking addictions :P

ooOOoo this was my 1000th post :)

Either method.  The above post used quote button in the upper right of the quoted post.  This post used the "Insert Quote" link when composing the reply.

Works in IE7, Opera, and Firefox all under XP.  Popups blocked, scripts enabled.

When you're using the 'quote' button while reading a post, does it take you to the post reply box or the quick reply area below the thread w/the quoted stuff inserted?

ah, having the quick reply collapsed and then clicking the quote in the top right will work just fine. I don't know if there is an option that can be set in the profile that auto-disables the quick reply dialog, but that *is* a way to make the Insert Quote link to work fine.

Nice work around. Thanks Scott

The former, with the quoted stuff inserted.  I've never seen the quick reply area below the thread.  ???

Ahhh, the quick reply box is a profile preference that I had set to "don't show".  I set it to on and got ... THE GREEN BAR.

I think I'll just reset that option back to "don't show" and sleep well.
