Title: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on October 09, 2007, 11:42:52 AM
The date for the 2nd Jericho Lake Ice Bowl is set for Saturday, January 12th.
The event will pretty much be the same except it will hopefully be a litter bit bigger and more organized. Same format and once again CTP's on every hole.
More info to come

I am currently looking into what will be needed to do so. It would the first sanctioned tourney I have run so I need to do some research on how to do so first and see if it is plausible.

I was mostly wondering about the tier of the event. Wether I should make it a C tier or the new Competition endowment thing. Only thing is that there is no info on this new tier. I have contaced the PDGA to get some more info on this. Cost is another thing as well. I would like to keep costs down and the charitable donation as large as possible without having to increase the fees for someone to come out and freeze their butts off in order to play this tourney.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: stpitner on October 10, 2007, 12:33:09 PM
C tier is probably the best way to go.  Whatever the new format that replaces D-tier may not be available if a sanctioned tournament has been run there before.

It's tough having to juggle all of these numbers!

Personally I would rather give the money to charity since it's a charity event. The PDGA should really have a charity tournament option...

seeing how the pdga IS a charity (501c.3) any sanctioned event is charitable! :)

Yeah. Most Ice Bowls are charity events.  Its nice that every once in a while "giving back" is a good thing rather than a bad thing on the course.

I email David Gentry today about the new Competition Endowment Program that is replacing the D tier events. This tier is supposed to be designed specifially for this type of chaitable event. Unfortunately, they have not finished with the details of this tier as of yet. So I am waiting until next month to find out further info on this .

All,

The willingness for us cheeseheads to pop down for a tourney in "Bears Country" (especially with Packers possibly in the playoffs ;D), is not reliant upon sanctioning necessaily. It does help, but I am willing to haul my but down there in January.

Thank you,

Steve

I definitely would want to get my name on the bottom of that flyer!

hah, I don't know why I kept thinking that the date of the tournament was on the 12th... I think I've been telling a lot of people that.  Duh, that's a Friday.  I wonder what day I have it written down on for the calendar... I know that I wouldn't have written it on a friday!

Be sure to Pre-Order some Ice Bowl Schwag!  5% of all cash sales on Ice Bowl specific merchandise before the tournament and then 5% of any cash sale at the tournament will be added to the donation to Hesed House!  Pre-orders I would appreciate payment ahead of time and then you can pick it up at the tournament.  The advantage of pre-orders are that I can accept Paypal (including all credit cards) for payment.

As long as they don't have any problems with my order, I will have these discs available with the 2008 Ice Bowl Hot stamp/Full Color Stamp:

DX Aviar - $8 (ordering only a few!)
Full Color DX Aviar - $10 (only ordering 5!)
Full Color DX Roc - $10
Champion Roadrunner - $13
Champion Wraith - $13

Elite-Z Buzzz - $13
Elite-Z Flick - $13
ESP FLX Challenger - $14
ESP FLX Surge - $14

An extra special - ESP SuperColor Buzzz - $20 - instead of 5%, $7 of every disc purchased goes to Hesed House!

I also hope to have some Gateway Wizards and Warlocks, but I don't know what flexibility yet (probably SuperSoft)

Apparel:
T-Shirts (Burnt Orange or Stone Blue in L, XL, XXL) - $15 - very limited quantities of each size!
Hoodies (Black L, XL, XXL) - $20 - even more limited quantities!
Navy Blue Beanie Winter Hats - $15
Towels - $10

I may try to get some minis too, not sure - $2.

2008 Stamp design on left below.

According to Rick my order should arrive the middle of next week, so for those of you that pre-order and don't want to wait for the ice bowl you can have it shipped to you for a flat $5 or meeting arrangements can be made (I live in Algonquin and work in Oak Brook, so anywhere near those two locations or on the traveling path between the two places is fine with me).

I can manually send out invoices through paypal and accept any credit cards that way - but it would require you to have a PayPal account.

I've been looking at online credit card merchants, but I haven't found anything that satisfies what I want for both online transactions and "offline" transactions at a tournament or card show.

I'm not signed up for their merchant services at the moment, so I don't think I can set it up that way.  I looked at them for a merchant services - even the mode where you don't even realize you're using paypal to pay, but I'm trying to find rates that are cheaper than theirs.

As of tomorrow I should be receiving 25 max weight range Super Stupid Soft Wizards with the Ice Bowl stamp on it, woohoo! :)  Gateway's recent runs of SSS discs have been the super floppy, what everyone craves kind of flexibility!  Price has recently been reduced to $13 on SSS product!  These things are going to be HOT!
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl

SSS Wizards are in!  I scanned in one so that all can see the hot stamp :)  The rest will be in next week.  Again, $13 cash for one of these guys.  Nice and grippy and floppy!  They are available in 174-175 in white, Orange, and Red.  The red might be only 174 or only 175g, I can't remember.

I have 25 in stock right now!

Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: stpitner on December 22, 2007, 11:44:14 PM
From what Aaron did last year, you are paired up with the person that is in the reverse position as you in the same division.  1st Open is paired with Last Open, 2nd Open is paired with 2nd to last Open, etc.

I didn't hear much reaction from others that played, but I didn't mind it at all.  All I know is that I either a) didn't buy enough mulligans, or b) just had no freaking clue when to actually use them!  My second shot was either not a whole lot better or just plain worse!

Sorry , the tournament will not be sanctioned and hopefully everyone will still attend the charitable event.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on December 23, 2007, 01:46:09 PM
Tom, with the way that I run the tourney, there would be no point in sanctioning it at all. They would not count any rounds towards ratings as the sale of mulligans voids any possibility of this happening. So I am going to keep it unsanctioned. Not to mention the fact that David Gentry did not offer me much info on what I was looking for in the new Competition endowment tier that was to replace the old "D-tier events. It was supposed to lower the cost of the sanctioning fee for charitable events, but it jsut did not seem worth it from the info I was given.

I'm not sure if my schedule will allow me to play this year, but sanctioned or not I highly recommend this Ice Bowl.  Last year's event was very well run and lots of fun.  Good people, home cookin', windbreaks around the shelter, and it's tough to beat that fire pit at Jericho Lake!

What was the overall amount of snow that was still on the ground in Aurora? I know that at work in Oak Brook we had maybe 2 inches (in most cases only 1) of snow on the ground whereas at home in Algonquin there was at least 4-5 that all melted.

With that said, that could be encouraging for the course conditions.  It's definitely going to be muddy, but hopefully Wed-Friday will be enough time to dry out some of the wet from the melt and any rain that falls today or tomorrow.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: Dan Michler on January 07, 2008, 12:20:09 PM
i think 1 inch of snow is equivalent to like 10 inches or 9 feet of water or something like that though.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on January 07, 2008, 12:37:28 PM
I was out yesterday and it looks like the fairway on 17 is a mini lake. Other than that there is some mud, but the remainder of the course is very playable.
Due to the water on 17, we will be playing 17's short tee to 18's basket. There will be a few alternate holes as well. The one used last year for the Ice Bowl will be there as well as another that is used regularly at leagues. From 9 short a hyzer for you righties to an opening that follows the curvature of the lake.
Regular 9 will be played from the long tees.

Jericho Lake Park - Aurora, IL - Registration 8 AM - 8:45 AM (at least try to get there during this time)... player's meeting to follow.  First round expected to start at 9:30AM.

Entry Fees:
2 canned goods plus
Pro - $40
Adv - $35
Int - $25
Rec - $25
Jr - $20

Other divisions to be opened pending a 3 player minimum.

Canned goods and a large cash amount per player will be donated to Hesed House in Aurora.  I don't want to steal Aaron's thunder on the amount if he wants to announce it here or at the tournament.

Highlights:
* Help raise money for Hesed House
* Free Lunch
* CTP on every hole
* Lunchtime Putting Contest
* Flymart on site (Paper or Plastic Sports)

Mulligans can be purchased at $2 each or 3 for $5.  All of that will be donated to Hesed house.

Format: 1st round - singles, 2nd round - seeded best shot doubles.  You partner with the person that finished in the opposite position first round.

Over 50 players last year, should be equal to that (and hopefully better!) this year :)

not to mention all the free stuff from the CTP's as well.

With the thaw and rain the last 2 days, the course is getting wet on a few holes. I Highly Recommend bringing out some boots and/ or extra socks as your feet will probably be getting wet.

There will be a fire going all day so you can warm them toes up a lunch time as well. ;D

If mulligans are purchased and used during round 2, does that allow both players to reshoot from one spot or just the single player?

Yes both partners will shoot again if a mulligan was used at that time.

Last year, it was the single player. Like in one scenario, Steve Olson let his partner Adam Camp have one of the remaining mulligans. So Adam could shoot again (to help the team). But Steve did not get to shoot again.

If anyone is interested I will be collecting Discontinuum membership dues.  We are off to a good start for 08. We are hoping for 150 members this year.

Godzilla's info is incorrect. Mulligans are for individuals only. If you use a mulligan during the doubles round, only the person who used the mulligan may shoot again.

I was out yesterday and it looks like the fairway on 17 is a mini lake. Other than that there is some mud, but the remainder of the course is very playable.
Due to the water on 17, we will be playing 17's short tee to 18's basket.

I'm guessin that the mini-lake will be there at least until spring.  Little Lake Jericho.

There's a "mini-pond" on the 3rd fairway (in the grove of trees, less than 50 ft from 3's basket) that will probably still be there on Saturday.  This water creeps onto the fairways for 2 & 4, but will only affect errant shots on those holes.

There's standing water 20 feet behind 10's basket, plus some close to 11's basket.

I Highly Recommend bringing out some boots and/ or extra socks as your feet will probably be getting wet.

I second that emotion.

Regarding mulligans, when can they be purchased? Before the tourney begins or will they be available between rounds? Is there a limit to the number of mulligans that can be purchased? Do you have to purchase mulligans for the first round and use them up, or are they available for the day? With the second round seeding to set up partners it could make things interesting.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl

Mulligans will be available beroe the day as well as before the second round. They may be rolled over from the first round as well. There is no limit as this is a fundraiser as well. All proceeds from this will go to Hesed House as well.
However, during the round of doubles, mulligans are good only for one player, not the team. They may be transferred to another player though. Say you have a mulligan and you want your partner to take another shot, you may give it to him/her and have them re-throw.

Is there a limit as to how many mulligans can be purchased and/or used?  It might be a good idea to announce to your group before the round how many you hold so there is no conflict over this. "Just hold your horses pardner, I  got me another Ace up my sleeve..."
And, can somebody use a mulligan, make a bad shot and then use anther one on the same shot, "Excuse me pardner, my ace went into the woods so I got me a joker up the other sleeve."

Will you be establishing local rules for the transient ponds/lakes/puddles?  ie. what if a disc lands in a deep puddle in the middle of the fairway?  Based on yesterday's report and then yesterday afternoon's rain, I expect an adventure.  I think Bass Pro Shop should have been a sponsor. ;D  I am looking forward to playing in the mud tomorrow.

you should be able to use consecutive mulligans just like in regular golf.  I assume that if you use your mulligan, you are throwing out your first shot, even if it turns out to be better than the second shot.

from last year's mulligan rules, you can use as many mulligans as you want in succession, but the last shot you take has to be the one you take.  You can't shoot 2 using a mulligan and then decide which one you like better.

No limit to how many mulligans you buy.  When I played last year we would hand the mulligan slip of paper to the other team who would either tear it up or put a big x through it to mark it as used.

Another dude lost his mulligan slip of paper last year - he was hoping that he could have a "grace" mulligan because he really did pay for it but didn't have the proof.  No paperwork = no mulligan shot.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl
Post by: Fox Metro Discer on January 11, 2008, 03:08:52 PM
As Scott stated above, you may use any number of mulligans in a row to get the shot you desire, however, once you use the mulligan, that is the shot you must take. If you don't like it, use another mulligan.

The mulligans are in paper form and you will be given one per mulligan bought. Once you use it, as Scott stated, give it to the person with the scorecard and tear it up or put a big X thru it.

As for the conditions out on the course, Only 17 is really not playable. Hole 3 is a little rough, but it should be playable. Do not worry, any standing water on the course is to be considered casual, no penalty. As I stated b4 we will not be playing 17, rather 17 to 18's basket.

So tomorrow we are not playing  17 or 18, instead it will be 17's short to 18's basket, 9's short to a temp hole by the lake, 9's long, and the temp hole between the garden and the creek after 13? So two rounds of 19? Jason
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Jericho Lake Ice Bowl

well, you took away 2 (17 and 18) and added 4 (17's basket to 18, 9's short to temp hole, 9's long, and temp hole between garden and creek.

That will wind up giving you 2 rounds of 20 holes :)

Aaron,

Great job on the event. Very well run. Lots of fun, very generous players packs and prizes.  Good job by the Fox Valley Team. Couldn't ask for a better day. . .Excellent turnout. Hard to believe that an ace wasn't hit today

Nice job by Scott on having so much merchandise to choose from. Good seeing some faces that I haven't seen in a couple of months.

Obviously he meant "couldn't ask for a better day", but Tom's all excited about the Packers and everything....  ;)

Although the only thing that would have made things in Aurora more entertaining yesterday is if we'd had Green Bay weather instead.

I don't know for sure how much the total is that I'm adding to the $964, but I do know for sure that at least 6 of the Super Color Buzzz's sold, and $7 from each of those goes to Hesed House.  That $42 right there officially breaks the $1000 threshold!  Nicely done!

I should have at least 3 more Super Color Buzzz's if anyone is interested.  $20, and $7 from the sale goes to Hesed House - but I need to know by Monday night if someone would want the Buzzz and still have the money set aside for Hesed House.
