Can someone recommend a portable iPod speaker (battery powered)? Someone, maybe Barish, had one at the club Invi that I thought was battery powered. I thought it would be nice to have at TC. Thanks.

I have the Logitech mm50. A review is at: http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2005/08/logitechmm50/index.php
The speakers have an internal rechargable lithium ion battery. I get about 10 hrs of play time for a full charge. They are very portable and give good enough and strong enough sound to cover most situations. The unit will also charge your iPod if you have it plugged in to the wall and the iPod is sitting in the unit overnight. If you want an audiophile system for home you can do better. However, they sound very good for the price and are very easy to use. McManus's only complaint about the speakers is the music I chose to play on them. ;D They retail for $150. I paid $99 at Costco for mine. You will find them for less than $150 online.
I can't make Fairfield next week. If you want to give them a try at TC and see if they work for you, be my guest. You can borrow them.
There's a place in Morton Grove (that has will call) which has refurbed units for $50.

I originally bought a refurbished unit off of ebay for about $60 and it was great for two weeks and then the on/off switch stopped working. Fortunately, the seller was reasonable and I was able to return the unit. I chickened out on getting another refurb and bought a new one from Costco since I really liked the unit for the two weeks. The new unit has been trouble free for over six months.
For portables, you pretty much have to make a choice. You are either going to get low$ and smaller with little sound quality, or higher $ and a little larger with much better sound quality. The first option can be met with a variety of pieces from logitech to altec lansing to the ihome line. All of them (to me) sound pretty thin and have no "oomph". They will run anywhere from $60 to $150 and all will get the job done. For the audiophiles out there, there is no other option than the Bose sound dock portable. Price is $399 so it is one of the more expensive of the bunch (face it, with electronics you get what you pay for). It runs on a replaceable Nicad battery that will give you 3 hours of play at full volume while charging your Ipod at the same time. It comes with a weather proof remote and a "sound bag" will be released shortly. The great thing about this piece is its sound quality. Normally, I'd say you can get better sound than Bose at a lower price for most products. Not this one. As with all Bose products, full volume is not going to produce any distortion or blow your speakers (try and turn any other protable up all the way and see what happens). It is also really, really loud. For outdoor applications where you won't be sitting right next to it, it can cover a pretty good sized area with sound when turned up. It provides much better bass than its size would indicate and has very nice, clear sound. I have one in the garage and can hear it when playing catch in the street. If you don't mind the $ and a little larger footprint, this is your only choice.
Thanks for the recommendations. That Bose dock is probably more bang than I'm looking for but it does look nice! http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/23817.html
