Title: Lookin' for a Job
Post by: Jon Brakel on October 19, 2007, 02:39:22 PM
They are doing some restructuring at my work and my job was eliminated. Our invenstment owners sold off the other divisions and we were down to one division and corporate. So most of the corporate aligned jobs have or are being eliminated. My job is being eliminated at the same time as our corporate CIO and CFO so I am in good company!

I have some leads on some jobs but if anyone knows someone that is looking for an Avaya guy, I'd appreciate it if you let me know. Shoot me an e-mail if you know of someone.

Here's the summary from my resume:

SUMMARY
A highly skilled telecommunications engineer with a proven track record of delivering cost savings while increasing value to the organization by the application of appropriate tools and technologies.

My last day is October 31st. My first day of day time disc golf is November 1st!  O0

This may or may not be of the greatest assistance, but I am the developer that created a job posting site for Willow Creek Community Church.  They have about 200+ jobs up there all in the Chicago area.  I noticed about 4 or 5 jobs currently listed in the telecommunications category.

Job Connection (http://www.willowcreek.org/jobconnection)

Avaya stuff hmm?  I used to be in charge of programming and doing initial support for the Avaya phone system at a previous job.  Pretty decent phones :)  I always wanted to hook the system up so that I could connect our system's voicemail with our computer system, but the tech that set everything up never explained it all well enough.

Many installers don't know much about modular messaging, but you have to buy the modular messaging piece. Avaya has lots of upgrades available but if you don't buy 'em you can't use 'em. We've never bought modular messaging so I only know it in theory. I could probably get a handle on it in about a day with a manual in front of me.

What line of work are you in? Right now I'm just networking. Calling all my contacts and letting them know that I'm looking. My work is letting me spend work resources discreetly to look for a new job.

financial services/stockbroker/personal banker

i hold a Series 7  license which allows me to make financial decisions for  investors

the key is not to get discouraged and to reach out to everyone you know

i think that its the forth quarter for businesses and they are making decisions based
on how much cash they got left for hiring at the end of the year and they have a budget
in mind for next year

i really hadnt heard about Indeed.com or the Craigslist option til a couple on months in to the search

I'll pm the job listings for my new company

I have an interview tomorrow in Chicago. What do you guys think of dress shirt, tie, dark blue sport coat and brown/tan dress pants for an interview? My boss always says he interviews in suits but I don't own any suits. I am so not in the know for how to dress for success!

Sport coat and tie is a good way to go.

I've seen a lot of good opportunities come out of Linkedin.com as well for those in the technology/web/marketing/etc. spheres. If you don't already have an account with a growing network of contacts it's a bit harder but definitely worth some effort.

I think the interview went well. I should know something by the end of the week. I have a lead on another job but haven't gotten the description yet.

Been a while since I posted in this thread. The previous interview went well but the company never got back to me. I tried to contact twice and just got voice mail.

I had another interview today in Waukegan. It went well. It's a 4 month contract to hire position.

I have an interview today with a recruiting company that has a client within 8 miles of Wheeling that needs an Avaya tech for a 10 month contract. It's a good position. Pay is a little more than I was getting previously...a LOT more than unemployment! Hopefully it goes well!

The interview went well. I'm expecting another interview with them next week after they check my references. I'm also expecting to go to Detroit for an interview with a different company.

I have my toe in the water on three other opportunities so things are starting to pick up again.

When are you coming to Detroit?

Hey, guess what?  I won the lottery on Tuesday.  Three dollars!  I gotta roll part of that over tonight.

I'm not sure on the Detroit interview. They keep saying that they want to fill the position soon but the guy doesn't have time to call me for the first phone interview. If it happens it is going to be phone interview, meet Chicago staff and then Detroit interview. So, I'll have time to give you a heads up that I'll be in the neighborhood.

I have another NW burbs job that I interviewed with the recruiter last week. Hoping for an interview with the client this coming week.

My six month vacation is almost over. I start work at AAA on April 28th supporting their phone systems in southern Wisconsin, Chicago, the collar counties around Chicago, NW Indiana and Ft. Wayne. I'm going to start packing a change of disc golf clothes in my car so that hopefully wherever I end up at the end of the day I can play a round.

My desk is going to be in Aurora...when are the league nights down there?

Congrats Jon. :computer:  Now you have to change your profile. I assume you will no longer VOip for food.  What is that anyway?
Title: Re: Lookin' for a Job
Post by: stpitner on April 23, 2008, 08:46:53 AM
voip = voice over IP (internet protocol) -> essentially uses your internet connection to make phone calls instead of regular phone lines.

Congrats John! Good to see you're well enough to want to play also!

The back comes and goes. This past weekend it was particularly bad. Usually I'm good enough to play one round though. It's almost impossible to play the second the round.
