Title: 7th Annual Widdershins Open - November 10th - Bevier Park, Waukegan
Post by: stpitner on October 22, 2007, 10:29:31 AM
The Widdershins tournament is back!  The 7th Annual Widdershins Open will be held on Saturday, November 10th, at Bevier Park in Waukegan.

Format this year will be singles - 2 rounds of 18-holes.  Players (or anybody else) can then come back after a dinner break and there will be a bring your own partner best shot doubles GLOW round of 18 holes.

REGISTRATION: 7:30-8:30 AM, Players Meeting: 8:35 AM, Tee Time shortly thereafter.  Ideally the second round will end around 4pm with sunset expected around 4:30.

ENTRY FEES:
OPEN (Cash Only) - $30.00 (100% Cash payout!)
Advanced - $30.00
Intermediate - $25.00
Recreational - $25.00
Junior (15 & Under) - $15.00
ALL Women - FREE
Over 100% payout to all AM Divisions guaranteed!  Rob 'em Rewards dollars (same concept as brass) paid out to all Am Divisions.

GLOW Round - $10 per team - 100% Cash only payouts!

$15 Player Pack (Rob 'Em Rewards Dollars) to all divisions except Open.

$3 for the ACE FUND.

If no Aces are hit, the ace fund will then be rolled into the cash payouts during the glow round.

We may use some of the alternates for one of the day rounds, but there will definitely be one round of concrete/rubber tees during the day and the glow round will also be from the concrete/rubber tees.

Come on out and check out the now 18-hole course and use it as a prepper for the following weekend!

Play this event and receive a $5 coupon for the following weekend!

I could see people asking me why am I running this event non-sanctioned when I have a sanctioned event happening the following weekend at the same course?  The answer is a couple of things:
1) This is like a preview event for the following weekend and play the course in a tournament setting.
2) This is a good way for me to make sure that I'm ready for a sanctioned event.  Hopefully both events will run smoothly, but if something gets botched at Widdershins it will be corrected for Chains of Pain II
3) There's the added glow round for people to participate.
4) Now there's additional incentive to play this event with a $5 savings for Chains of Pain.

If you play this event, I'll hand you a $5 coupon at the end that you can use for registration at the C-Tier Chains of Pain II event going on the following weekend.  It will be good for $5 off your registration fee to play.  If you pre-register for Chains of Pain, you will pay the full pre-registration discounted price, and then when you check in at the registration table with the coupon, you'll receive $5 cash back.

Feel free to let me know if you're coming out!

Be careful about doing the cash back thing at a PDGA sanctioned event. Anyone remember when we did cash back as a player pack optional choice? You could choose $10 cash or $15 brass as your player pack. We wound up having to do a $10 instant rebate coupon that you could select when you registered. The PDGA tried very hard to stop us from doing it that we finally gave up and stopped. I think we only did that for 3 tournaments. It was one of our very best "player's choice" ideas.

Well, it's really just a refund of overpayment on their entry fee.  You only get $5 cash back if you pre-registered for the pre-registered discounted price.  Otherwise it's just a discounted entry fee.  It shouldn't be a problem if it's just a refund, correct?

I think with Guru out, and with Brian Graham no longer needing to hate me just because Guru hated me, and Brian Graham having no reason to believe that Scott Pitner is one of my minions, because he isn't,

it's all good.

Scott, you gonna do Pro & Am for the Glow round or just 1 division to keep it simple?

You might want to avoid "cash back" as that was what we called our program. But ours was really just a discounted entry fee also.

Mukey, good question.  Since it's all cash payout, it will not be pro/am.  However, it will be upper/lower.  Upper is Pro/Adv & Lower is Int/Rec.  Honor system for what division your team belongs in.  I thought about doing 1 round of 18 and then 1 round of the 9 concretes, but if a majority of the glow people also already came out that day and played 36 holes, asking for another 27 is pretty tough.  18 sounds more reasonable!

Bring your own glow materials (or LED's).  I'll have some stuff for sale.  All the merch will be packed up before the glow rounds, but I'll try to leave the glow plastic near one of the doors of the van so that I can get to it.  I'll have glow stuff on all of the baskets.

Ok, I'll just call it a refund then.  It only applies to people who pre-register before Widdershins takes place.

actually let me explain a little bit better what happens.

Paper or Plastic Sports - the title sponsor of the event, will add a $5 sponsorship for each coupon that is turned in from people who play at Widdershins and then come out to Chains of Pain.  So it's like a subsidized entry fee.  The payouts will not be diminished any from this discount.

That's what I meant, just didn't say it correctly.Last year at Widdershins my partner & I missed getting our $ back by having an Advanced guy in a team in the Int/Rec side. Is it combined rating or if you're over 915 you should be in Upper?

If one person is over 915 the team will be in upper.  It will be tough for me to check this though. I'm not a rating elf, so I don't have the whole list :)

I cannot make the singles. What time will the glow start?

I want to get it going around 6pm at least for registration.  I would expect tee time to happen around 6:30pm, but the sooner you get out there the better to make sure you get your lights all set and good to go.

I ran some of the numbers today for the upcoming payouts, and I can now say that there will be a guaranteed 150% payout for all AM divisions at this event! (payout includes player pack + position payout)

I have also decided that for this event we will be playing 2 rounds from the concrete/rubber tees.  The glow round will also be from the concrete/rubber tees.  It will make it easier as far as navigating the course because I still don't have all of the alternates memorized yet.  Making sure everyone else knew how to find them too would be difficult.  This also will promote slightly quicker play to make sure everything ends before dark and I have enough time to load up the van before the glow round starts.

Don't forget that the glow round is a bring your own partner round!  I will have some 1.5" mini glow sticks available for sale at $1 each or 4 for $3.  I'm still working on securing some LED's.

I also have 44 Destroyers left in stock that will be available for sale - $14 for Star plastic.  Weights range from 168g - 175g.

I'm planning on the glow round Scott.  Not sure about the singles tourney that day.  I don't understand why there is a tournament at Bevier on back-to-back weekends.

a lot of it just had to do with not a lot of time for scheduling and then a lack of available weekends.  I fully intend to either do separate courses next year or merge the events or something like that next year.

Widdershins will have a better payout than Chains of Pain because there is no sanctioning fee and no price per player that I have to pay to the PDGA.  There's also unfortunately not going to be any bathrooms at Widdershins, but I have a porta-potty arranged for Chains of Pain (The bathrooms will be winterized at some point this month - they may or may not still be open for Widdershins).

I should also mention that Widdershins will be concretes/rubbers only, and Chains of Pain will use alternates as well.  This will help the events feel different than one another.

So women are free...do they still receive a payout and player's pack?

Player Pack yes, CTP (at least 1) yes, payout will either be minimal or perhaps just a trophy to first place.

Trophies will be similar to what Brett had at Bloomington/Normal.  I liked that idea of a framed picture of one of the holes on the course.

Good selling point to get the girlfriend to come and play.

I've used the framed picture before. I think it personalizes the trophy when there's an image of the course you've just conquered ;)

It's a high of 50 for tomorrow, with winds estimated to be a very light 6mph!  No rain is expected, so I hope many of you come on out!  I would greatly appreciate the support!

Don't forget about the Bring your own partner glow doubles later that night too!  Try to be there around 6 for registration.

Well, we had an unfortunate turnout for the morning rounds.  The glow was much better thankfully :)

There were 5 people that came out for the Widdershins Open.  Dave Nelson took 1st place in Open taking home $90.  He also won a CTP for a Glow Wizard.

Sergio C. took 1st in Advanced and won $30 rewards dollars.

Carla G. took 1st place in the Womens division and took home the 1st place trophy.

Thanks to those of you who did come out, and I appreciate everyone for staying to play.

For the glow round we had 14 people play.  There were 5 upper teams and 2 lower teams.  In upper Brett C and Tom S took 1st place winning $40 for the team.  Scott K and Chris J took 2nd winning $13 for the team (the $3 was from the ace fund from Widdershins that rolled over to payouts for the glow round).  For lower Matt and Josh beat out John and me by 1 stroke by throwing an even.  The two of them split $20.

We had a throwoff for the $16 Ace Pool in the evening, and Scott K & Tom S split winning $8 each.

Thanks so much to my wife Sara, Eric M, Adrian G, John C, and Matt S for helping me with all of the various duties of unloading, setting up, packing up, and reloading.  An extra thanks to John C for helping set up some of the glow baskets and tees.  An extra thanks to Matt S for going out to the course in the morning and clearing out all of the glow stuff!

I hope everyone comes out for Chains of Pain this upcoming weekend... it will be a great time!

Scott
