Title: Winter Series #3: Irish You the Best of Luck - B-Tier Channahon, March 8th, 2008
Post by: stpitner on January 25, 2008, 03:56:58 PM
A B-Tier event is coming to Channahon! March 8th, 2008, The "Irish You the Best of Luck" tournament, also the 3rd and final event of the Illinois Winter Series, will take place at Community Park in Channahon.

Registration & Check-In: 8AM - 9AM, players meeting at 9:15AM

PRE-REGISTRATION will be available through pdgasignup.com, check out www.paperorplasticsports.com for more information as it becomes available.

Sponsorship Opportunities!

$10 - get your name/business name on the flyer and any other list of sponsors distributed (website, etc) - list will be sorted by dollar value, highest on top.

$20+ - get everything at the $10 level as well as your name mentioned during the player's meeting and any other perk I might come up with.

$50+ - get everything from the $20 level as well as your logo on printed materials (flyers, handbook, stuff like that).

Cash equivalent items can be given away as CTP's, but right now I'm trying to focus on helping get that pro purse higher! I would greatly appreciate receiving the sponsorship money at least a week before the tournament. The less I have to worry about the week before the event the better!

Obviously sponsorships can be greater than the amounts listed here, and I certainly wouldn't turn down stuff brought in the same day of the event. Cash can also be used and turned into Rob 'em Rewards dollars (funny money used to purchase merchandise) sponsorships on CTP's. The CTP's are used to benefit the AM divisions.

Hope to see you there!
Scott

We are currently at $200 of our $500 minimum cash added sponsorship for the Pro Purse.

List includes:
Paper or Plastic Sports
Disc Golf Alley Club
Joliet Winter Doubles League
Mike Holmquist

Your support of this tournament is greatly appreciated!  I was just out at the course today playing in the doubles league and then mapping out the course for the players handbook afterwards.  I have 3 temp holes lined out, but I might only use 2 of them.  It all depends on the course conditions if there's a big melt and flooding or not.  One of the temp holes measure out to 504' :)  TOUGH hole.

Sponsorship List update - we are at $250 of our minimum goal of $500 for the pro purse!

List includes:
Paper or Plastic Sports
Disc Golf Alley Club
Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club
Joliet Winter Doubles League
Mike Holmquist

AM Sponsorship is currently at $200 rewards dollars that will either go towards payouts or broken down as 20 CTP's of $10 Rob 'em Rewards dollars each.  I'm not sure how many CTP's are going to come in, so we shall see.  Definite CTP's are 1 Membership to Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club and probably at least 5 Paper or Plastic Sports CTP's.

I have a decision that I need to make with these custom hot stamped discs:

Discraft has a new tournament special disc for 2008 - the CryZtal Avenger SS.

Right now I'm ordering Z-Thumb Grip Surge, CryZtal Buzzz, FLX Predator, and FLX Avenger SS.

Should I replace one of those with the CryZtal Avenger SS instead?  The ones listed above are the same pricing tier as the CryZtal Avenger SS

The entire order includes these:
D-Buzzz
D-Soft Magnet
X-Soft Banger-GT
Z-Flick
ESP-Crush
ESP-Wasp
Z-Thumb Grip Surge
CryZtal Buzzz
FLX Predator
FLX Avenger SS

Would it be worth it if I swapped the FLX Avenger SS with the CryZtal Avenger SS?  I will have some stock ESP Avenger SS on the way, but no FLX Avenger SS at all if I remove it from the custom order.  I can't add anything more to the order, I can't afford it.

Sponsorship currently at $300 of the $500 minimum goal:

Paper or Plastic Sports
Disc Golf Alley Club
Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club
E-Clan / Bonecrusher (once I get my notebook I'll replace this with the proper wording)
Joliet Winter Doubles League
Mike Holmquist

AM Sponsorship currently somewhere around $280 to be spread around to the divisions - mostly as CTP's right now.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to finance buying discs from Innova other than a regular stock order for this tournament.  I'd like to get some of those discs, but I'd have to start acquiring either sponsorships that goes towards disc money or pre-orders on some more discs.

I also am not sure if I'd be able to get the discs in time from Innova since they usually want a 4 week lead time (I'm right at that window right now).

Attached is the hot stamp design for the tournament.  The design is still pending approval, but hopefully it will not change too terribly much from this design.

I sent in a request to see if I could change out the Z-thumb grip Surges for CryZtal Avenger SS discs.

You can feel free to pre-order discs as a way to help out with sponsorship :)

Rob 'em Rewards is my funny money system for AM players.  If you've played at an IOS then it's the same concept as brass cash.  Rob 'em Rewards dollars can be used at any tournament where Paper or Plastic Sports (that's me) is selling.  So you can (if you want) save up your player pack money and possible winnings from 3 or 4 events and then buy something big near the end of the year.

Right now my schedule has 14-15 events that will potentially happen in 2008 where you can get stuff, and Channahon is only event #2 :)

one temp hold I'm told is similar to what Gary Lewis does.  It's right after 18 heading the opposite direction from walking back to 1.  I measured it to be 504' straight down the chute.  The basket will be down at the bottom of the small hill near where I saw some tracks that probably some service vehicles travel.  If the service vehicles don't go down there too often (it's grass so I'm thinking probably not) the basket will be right in there.  Very tight all the way down.

The 2nd temp hole is up top of the hill, and it's hard to describe.  There's a monster tree about 30 feet in front of you forcing you to choose a left or right route that will be fairly tight either way with the basket 300'+ feet away near the path.  I'm hoping that not too many people will be having mega picnics on a March 8th Saturday, otherwise it might get in the way a little bit.

The 3rd temp hole may only be set up depending on registration and if there is any flooding (can you say probably???).  The tee is on the path, and it plays probably around 280 (I don't have my measurements with me).  It's really open, but here's the catch.  15-20' left of the basket is the path.  15-20' past the basket is the path.  If you go ON or beyond the path you're OB.  So keep it right and you're fine, go left, you're out.  Since the tee is also on the path, the path's ob will start a couple feet in front of the tee.

I just may put in that 3rd temp hole regardless just because I think it would be fun... it also make for a shorter feeling walk back to hole 1.  I just don't want to interfere too much with people that may be using the path - the weather forecast will dictate that for me.

sounds like the temp holes will be kool to.  I know what hole you are talking about on the first temp hole after 18.. They all should be kool.

PRE-REGISTRATION HAS NOW GONE LIVE

Available here (http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1201909017) at www.pdgasignup.com (http://www.pdgasignup.com).

Additional divisions will be opened if I can get 3 people to pre-register.  However, you can't pre-register on the site if the division is not listed.  Interesting dilemma :)  So if you don't see your division yet are interested in signing up, please email me or PM me.  I will instruct you on how to sign up along with the understanding that if there are not enough people to meet the minimum 3-person requirement you will be moved to another division (and that will be determined when you contact me).

I expect this event to fill, so pre-register and save yourself the hassle on the day of the tournament!  It will make both of our lives easier on March 8th!

AM's that pre-register and then are a no show that give me enough notice can forward their entry fee to another event (I would have to know by the same pre-reg cutoff time of 8pm 3/6/08), otherwise it will be converted into cash equivalent and added to the AM payouts (it would be probably be evenly distributed to all AM divisions).

The same thing would happen for pro's, but their entry fee would go to pro payout instead.

I went ahead and opened up a store to make T-Shirts available for this event.  These shirts will probably not be available at the tournament!  I see very little of the money that comes in from the sale, but I'm going to take $1 from each item sold and create a "T-Shirt CTP" at the event.  Whoever wins the CTP wins the cash.  The only people that qualify for the T-Shirt CTP are those who bought a shirt.  You can prove it by either wearing it or show me a receipt of a shirt purchase that has your name on it when the CTP winner is announced.  I can guarantee that the CTP will be valued at a minimum of $10 cash.

There's a LARGE assortment of t-shirts available.  Check it out here:

Irish You the Best of Luck Shirts! (http://www.cafepress.com/pops_irish)

It should take about a week from the time you place your order until the shirt is received.

Thanks,
Scott

Unfortunately there is no trophy only at the tournament.  Perhaps once I have run more tournaments and get more into a routine I can start working on handling all of the various types of entry fees, but it will not be at this event.  The other big reason why I didn't offer it for this tournament was because since it was part of the Winter Series, the first two events did not offer it and so I'm staying consistent.

That's because they still don't put trophy only on all of the divisions on the spreadsheet. My tourney modeler makes it a little bit simpler to work around the PDGAs stubborn laziness.

Pre-Registration Bonus for AM's!

As an added incentive to pre-register for the event, any AM that pre-registers (including the ones that already have), will receive a extra $5 Rob 'em Rewards in their player pack.  That's right, it will now be $20 instead of just $15!

Pre-register here: www.pdgasignup.com (http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1201909017)

Save yourself a lot of time on the day of the tournament, PRE-REGISTER.

Thanks guys... I'll send you a note when I receive an email confirmation of a pre-registration.  The pre-registration list is current to all of the pre-registrations that I have received so far (6 of them).  It typically takes about an hour for me to receive the notification after you pre-reg, so bigeric, if you did pre-reg last night I don't have a notification about it.  Send me a PM if you did go through pdgasignup.com and I'll send a note off to the web administrator to see if the pre-registration note was not sent to me.

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, you can sent a check or money order to pre-register.  I will PM you with the information.  If anyone else wants to use that method instead of a credit card to pre-register (or would rather not pay the $3 service fee), please PM me and I will send you the information.

As far as the shirts, I would highly recommend ordering direct from cafepress' website because at the moment I do not have enough leftover budget room to place a decent order for shirts.  I have over $3k worth of new inventory an apparel that will be at the tournament, but tacking on $1000 in car repairs last month has prevented me from getting the shirts (for now).  If I get a few more sales before the end of the week in my store I'll try my best to have shirts.  But for now, I highly recommend ordering through cafepress.

Scott.

I received 3 emails all at the same time with 3 more pre-registrations, and yours was in there.  You're all set.  It also tells me what registration # you are, so I haven't lost any registrations either.

I'm anticipating this event to max, be sure to pre-register!  60 people went to the Ice Bowl, 73 to Abominable Snowman, I can handle up to 105!

Hey Scott, what tees do you think we will be playing? I'm going to head out there on Saturday and would like to get some appropriate practice in.

he's donating his next of kin :P j/k

obviously we'll play the shorts.  I've been trying to talk to Frank to get his best opinion on if we should play the longs or not.  I haven't been out there in about a month so I don't know what the course conditions are like right now.  A good number of the holes also only have 1 tee.

I will say this: I would really like to play the longs, and I'm going to try to set things up to play the longs.  However, should there be a lot of snow or something happens where it would be difficult to maintain both sets of tees, it will only be from the shorts.  If we do play the longs it will ONLY be on the tees that have a cement long tee.  I know that there's one hole (I want to say 12 but I'm not sure), that if you walk 30' back there's a grass tee marked with flags.  We will NOT play that tee.  With the exception of the temp holes, all of the tees will be on cement.  1 of the temp holes will tee from the path, so hopefully footing will be decent from all of the tees.

OK there's still a bit of confusion after that post, so just to clarify. On holes that only have one cement tee pad, we will be playing that both rounds. On holes that have long and short cement tee pads, we will play one round from each or both rounds from the longer cement tee? Thanks!

because it's a single day event with all divisions, the default is both rounds short tees.

IF weather conditions are decent, then we'll play longs for one round.  Any hole with a single cement tee will be played from that tee for both rounds.  I don't have my course notes here with me at work to tell you which holes only have 1 tee.  I can post that info tonight.

hopefully we'll be able to work around anything that is unplayable.  I just have to hope for not a lot of precipitation over the next two weeks.  Just be ready I guess.  I wonder if some sort of cleats would help - would be tricky with cement tees.

Here's a rundown of the tees from memory.

Hole 1: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 2: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 3: one tee, cement
Hole 4: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 5: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 6: 2 tees, short tee is cement, long tee is grass
Hole 7: one tee, cement
Hole 8: one tee, cement
Hole 9: 2 tees, short tee is cement, long tee is grass
Hole 10: one tee, cement
Hole 11: one tee, cement
Hole 12: 2 tees, short tee is cement, long tee is grass (apparently will not be played?)
Hole 13: one tee, cement
Hole 14: one tee, cement
Hole 15: one tee, cement
Hole 16: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 17: 2 tees, both are cement
Hole 18: one tee, cement

Here are some spots where flooding may cause problems:
Hole 1: Crossing from the tee to the basket. I've never seen the tee or green flood.
Hole 2: Possibly around the new pin placement. On the walk from 2 to 3.
Hole 3: On the green.
Hole 4: In the woods left of the basket.
Hole 5: On the fairway.
Hole 6: On the fairway and green and behind the basket.
Holes 7--9 should be unaffected.
Hole 10: Possibly on the fairway.
Hole 11: Possibly on the fairway and green. Definately in the woods to the left.
Holes 12--18 should be relatively unaffected.

I think things will be fine, especially if it stays cold the next 2 weeks. The course is typically messy in March, but I've only seen it unplayable once (back in '95).

Thanks Jack for that information!  The grass long tees (6,9,12) will not be played at all.  All shorts will be played minimum one round, all cement longs will HOPEFULLY be played one round.  Since it seems like the tee areas are not quite as affected by the water there's a much better chance of playing from them.  I just have to make sure that it doesn't keep snowing and covering the tees.  We need to get them clear and keep them clear and let the sun do some help and prevent icing.

From some other people that discussed the course with me, they agreed with your memory, Jack, in saying that 6 and 11 are the area that gets hit the hardest with flooding (6's and 11's baskets are really close to one another).  Those are the two that Frank told me that if necessary we would need to close off.  That's why I have 3 alternates, but I'm also expecting a big field, so it might be tricky!

Community Park was in very good condition today. There is very litle snow and very little mud. There is some ice.   We played shorts then whatever longs had concrete the second time around.  11 was fine today.  However, once it melts it will be a big mess. I love what was done with 2.  The basket is just behind the creek.  its a risk/reward for big arms from the shorts. for me its a basic 3 as I have no intention of trying to go over the creek.  From the longs it requires an upshot to land over the creek but not go too far.  Big arms have the luxary of making a long put/upshot that is easier to control  I hit the bridge on the upshot from the long tee and rolled over for a nice 15 ft put which I missed.  >:(  Looking forward to coming back in two weeks. Sorry Scott, but i am not going to pre reg until the week of the event so I know it will not be a blizzar or thunderstorm or other chaotic climactic event.

thanks for the report!  It sounds like it's in really good shape.  Pre-registering by next Friday helps as I'll have the money from the registrations before the tournament, but I'm ok with people pre-registering during the week before the event as well.  The more people that pre-register the shorter the lines and the better I'll feel about how all of this is going to work out!  I don't have an my own armada of people like the Brakel family to get all that registration stuff done quickly and smoothly.  Maybe that will change in 8-10 years! lol.

couple new sponsors -

Linda's Pizza (corner of Raynor & Taylor in Joliet)
Mark Sylvester, Owner of P.I. Home Inspection Services

I'll try to get the full sponsorship listing available soon.

Just a quick "how cool is that?" for what Linda's Pizza is chipping in - every player in their handbook will receive a coupon for $5 off a L or XL pizza.  A free L or XL pizza will be given away in the ace fund (if no ace's hit the closest two people split the money, but the overall closest gets the pizza), and there will be 5 CTP's for a free L or XL pizza!

Right now we have over 30 CTP's!!!  There's a good chance that every hole will have a CTP for both rounds!

I can answer the second part of the question now.  You CAN sign up or renew for the PDGA at the tournament.  I would give you some sort of receipt that you can use as a membership "soft card" until they send you your official card.  It would immediately take affect and you would not be charged the $10 non-member fee.

As far as a discounted rate - I'll have to contact mirth or someone at DISContinuum to see if I can submit it through them and get (I believe) $5 off the entry fee.

Another possible option I believe would be to renew through this website - bring a copy of the receipt for your renewal, and then I will not charge the $10 non-member fee.

if you pre-reg'd, and you look at the list of players and it says "Yes" next to your name if you're current - then you're good.

As long as it shows you are active online you should be fine.  I don't know if I'll have the list of active players or not, but I wouldn't worry too much if you don't have your card.  I'll just have to trust you and come hunt you down later if you actually weren't current :P

Frank does an excellent job of taking care of the course.  I have a good feeling that all of the tees will be in great shape.  I sent him an email tonight to make sure he knew we were going to use the concrete longs as well just in case he didn't already know.  I'm going to be out there Friday to flag everything and try to do additional prep work and hope that stuff can sun dry.  Then if I am not able to take care of something Friday I'm going to try to be out there at 6AM Friday and will try to get everything squared away quickly.

As I hear updates I will post it.

I highly recommend arriving early.  I'm at 33 players pre-registered, and 20 minutes to go until pre-registration closes.  I won't know until tomorrow sometime to know for sure where pre-registration sits.  Registration opens up at 8AM, and I max out at 105.  I have a backup plan to add a 22nd hole to expand to 110, but I'd rather not have to add that 22nd hole.

I know of at least 10 people that have told me they are going but have not pre-registered.

I don't know if I posted it here or not -but my brain kept thinking that pre-reg closed tonight.  It closes THURSDAY (tomorrow) night at 8pm.  I just got off the phone with the guy running the pre-reg system, and he has 10 additional names that have pre-registered, so that puts us at around 43 players pre-registered.

Going to be an awesome day!

Just another trophy to add to the mess lol.

Course Map
So I enjoyed seeing what Mike did with making maps for the IOS events, and I wanted to include a map of the course on the player handbook... so here you go:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111480952906454643498.0004479673cb5676a5e76&ll=41.473184,-88.180529&spn=0.00549,0.014269&t=h&z=17 (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111480952906454643498.0004479673cb5676a5e76&ll=41.473184,-88.180529&spn=0.00549,0.014269&t=h&z=17)

The blue lines are the long tees that will be used in the 1st round.  If you do not see a blue line that means you'll be playing the same thing twice.

Pre-reg is closed, but I have not received the final pre-reg information yet - hopefully that will come tonight or early tomorrow!

Let me know what you think of the map :)

it was going to be 504' with the basket at the bottom of the hill, but then I realized that's a service road down there, so I don't think it's a good idea to have a basket there.  It's just a pain if you overshoot the basket because of the downhill slope that will be right behind that basket.

I'm going to find out tomorrow if there are soppy conditions for 21.  The tee will be on the walking path, but here's what makes 21 brutal - ten feet in front of the tee the path becomes OB.  All of the stuff to the left and beyond the path behind the basket will also be OB.  The basket is going to be positioned within 20 feet of the OB path.  Just throw to the right and stay out of the baseball field and you're fine.

Hole 20 is also going to be a little tough because it's probably 15 feet from the path, and on or over the path is also OB.

The handbook is undergoing printing right now.  I'm printing out the stuff that I know is complete - I have to look at a few things tomorrow when I'm out flagging and maybe make some last minute changes.

I hope to have handbooks for everyone - 700 total double sided pages of printing for 100 copies, yick!

there are only 6 holes that have a long tee - holes 1,2,4,5,16, and 17.  Those longs will be played in the morning round.  The shorts on those holes are 2nd round.  All other holes are the same tee both rounds.

I was out there today - thanks to Frank and Mike for helping with the flags.  I had to move hole 21's basket position because of the water levels.  It's closer to the baseball field.  It was very windy out there today - hopefully it will not be like that tomorrow.  The new hole 21 will be brutal.  The water on this hole will be casual OB, so no penalty, but there is OB 30' beyond the basket, the baseball field is OB, and it's just going to be one of those holes that rewards the player that plays smart golf.  The hole plays 263' now.

Hole 19 measured out to 466', and hole 20 is 308' with OB 15' beyond the basket.

I also wanted to let Scott know how good the event was. Even with the wicked cold it was a blast and well done. The player pack and payout was generous. The efforts put in to get sponsorship were very noticeable and very appreciated.

I also really enjoyed being able to select discs from such a large stock. Anything I wanted was in the boxes and was even able to pickup a very well priced Am Worlds 2008 Super Roc that I'd had my eyes on at some web sites and they wanted $5 or $10 more than Scott.

On a side note, I won a split of the Ace Pool money in the throw off using a Wizard Putter purchased from Scott at the Bloomington Normal Open last year. Double thanks.

No aces were hit (kinda surprised, but understandable with the wind).  $231 and a free pizza were split between the two closest people on a throw off that took place after the ceremony.

We added one hole using the practice basket to make 22 total holes.  We could not add any additional holes because of how much time was consumed due to registration (registration opened at 7:58AM - two minutes early! lol).  Sure you could just make up a basket and tee, but considering we didn't get the first round going until 10:07am, adding more than 22 holes would have made the end of the 2nd round even later than it already was, and the end of the second round was around 6:20-6:30, when it was already fairly dark.  Thank goodness for van headlights :)  Thanks to everyone else who turned on their headlights as well to assist with lighting.  This is one of the main reasons why I wished the event was today!  The daylight savings would have permitted the round to finish under daylight.

There was a grand total of 127 players that wanted to play, there was one messup on my registration side that should have been caught with the guys doing the cards.  However, there was one messup on their side and we wound up with only 109 players for the day.  I had the same name written down twice, and they included the registration card for a pre-reg player that it appeared had checked in but was a no show at the start of the event.  Officially 3 pre-registered players did not show - and their entry fees went directly into the payouts for their respected divisions.  With officially had to turn away 15 players that were on the waiting list, but I know that the true amount of players that did not stick around was closer to 40 because they didn't even want to bother with putting their name on the waiting list.

Just a major thank you to everyone that came out.  For those of you who were at the player meeting, you heard me share about last year's Irish You the Best of Luck tournament on March 3rd in Elk Grove Village.  I was helping run that tournament, and I received a phone call that my dad had a heart attack and was in the hospital.  I was told to go to the hospital immediately, and when I arrived there I found out that my dad had died.  He was never revived from the heart attack.  He was only 47.  So for the number of people that came out I was extremely touched - even though nobody knew the true significance it was for coming out.  Because of the response and the turnout and just the unbelievable amount of support I received from people today, I fully intend to bring another tournament to Channahon on an annual basis.  It will DEFINITELY be a two-day event without question, and I intend to move the day to be a weekend in May and run it as The David S Pitner Memorial - as May 11th was his birthday.  He had only played disc golf for about 6 months before he died, but he absolutely LOVED it - mostly because the whole family enjoys it, and we were all able to share in this fantastic sport.  He loved his family more than words could ever say.

Winners:
Open - Adam Olsen - $423 cash - rounds of 56, 60 totalling 116 (-16)

haha, cool, I was just going by memory when I typed up the $196.  I have it written down elsewhere - and the notebook is still loaded in the van.

It was lonely after all you guys left - my wife and I loaded up everything, we got out of there at 9:15pm.  LONG day.  That was quite the interesting baptism by fire of going from about the most 25-27 players in one day to 109 and many more that wished they could have played!

The one thing that I would have liked to see - no DNF's.  There was 1 in Rec, but considering the size of the entire field that's not bad at all!

I'm glad the weather held out.  Cold is not a problem.  Being in Ohio would have been a problem.  I'm glad that storm missed you guys.

Thanks for the back story, Scott.  Its good to hear the event went well.  Anyone out there with a video camera?

Get some rest.

Scores are posted.

Adam Olsen shot a 1046 rated round first round.  That's just sick!

Joe- in fact there was an independant video camera crew that came out to film some video to create a documentary on the evolution of disc golf - the documentary is part of the 5-day International Documentary Challenge http://www.documentarychallenge.org/ (http://www.documentarychallenge.org/).  I will receive a copy of this video when it is complete (the requirements are for the video to be 4-7 minutes long), and I'll see if I can perhaps send you a copy of this video.  I just feel weird because they asked me to take off my glasses during my interview to remove the glare. felt weird :P

HUGE props to Jason Poole.  He was originally signed up to play but could not due to injury.  He still came out to help, and he just completely took control of taking care of the incoming scores and sorting the leaderboard.  We never would have been able to get everything done if it wasn't for his help!

Some other thanks include: my wife Sara - without her taking sales we would have been lost, Eric McCluskey, Jim Fischer, Matt Stachura, Tony Pajot, John Cleaveland, Mike Krupicka, Frank Grimes, and Aaron Scott.  I'm sure that I'm forgetting someone!  Thanks for help!

Wow, glare-free must be important.  I let my Host wear his mirrored sunglasses just to give folks something to look at (a tiny mini me, in fact).  Reminds me of when I was a kid and it was school-pic day.  They'd tilt my glasses so as to not reflect the flash, always looked kinda schoolmarmish.  I'm sure they won't show your face (or any face) for too long, better to have some B-pool footage rolling.  If you have contact info, feel free to forward my name to them.  I'm happy to help out with footage from my archives.

Any of the show DVDs move?  I noticed you had a great crop of newer players.  That's always nice to see.

I either sold one or someone took one - sara doesn't remember selling one but we are missing one.  Ah well, whoever got it I hope they enjoy it!  I didn't get a chance to put the better DVD cases on it, and it wasn't displayed very well.  That will change for future events :)

The player handbook is now available online.  Please contact me if you want to use these images for anything outside your own personal use.

Irish You the Best of Luck Handbook (http://www.paperorplasticsports.com/tournaments/20080308-irish/irish-handbook.html)

The pages may look confusing as how they are presented, but as long as you can get it formatted to print correctly it's how it would work for a booklet format.  The first page is page one first side, then page one back side, page two front side, page two back side, and so on.  It's 7 pages, double sided.

Comments on what you thought about the handbook are appreciated - these are not cheap to create, and they are also very time consuming.  Did you or anyone on your card get some use out of it?  I heard a couple people appreciated having something to keep as a memento from their day.

Thanks,
Scott

It was very useful for the kids in  my group second round.  They never played the course before and look at the book often to get the footage and pin placement.. Also one kid used it as a score card that was kinda kool.

one score had to be adjusted - might affect ratings, but it shouldn't change it much.  I also added payout amounts to the pro divisions.

I didn't hear anybody tell me their thoughts about the temp holes.  Did you like them?  I saw a small backup on 19 a couple times.  I guess that would be expected considering how fast 18 would play.

The player handbook was great!!! You have raised the bar. It made it very easy to know exactly what the OB was for a given hole. I know I saw a couple using it for distances as well. Save your pennies on the inside and just do black and white.

The temp holes were good (despite the fact that they were where I lost the most strokes). I would have liked to have seen the road/paths on 22 OB. That would have added a little more thought to an otherwise simple hole.

Putting the CTP cards w/ a pencil in little baggiesl on the flag was a smart way to do it.

In the winter, you need to start earlier (or wait for the time change).

I agree that the player handbook is great.  But I know it is both time consuming and expensive.  Other tournaments run fine without it, so if you need to cut back somewhere that would be the place.  It really does add to the professionalism of the event, though.

The temp holes were fine.  I think most people understood that 22 was a quick addition to accomodate more players.  Gary generally places temp holes to utilize the elevation of that hill on an otherwise flat course.  For example he'll place a basket near where you put the 20th tee and throw to it from the utility road below where you placed the 19th basket.  The tee for your 21st hole would be from the top of the hill throwing down across the path and creek to where you placed the basket.  We don't get enough elevation change in Illinois.

Finishing in the dark didn't really bother me, but might have been avoided with a shorter lunch.  Again, I know there were reasons for the long lunch break that can be adressed in the future.

I think porta-lets are a requirement when the bathrooms are closed.

Thanks for running a generous tournament and for letting us deliver and sell the CFR discs.  We hope to raise $1400 through CFR sales and made a good start this weekend.

I thought the course routing books were cool, but perhaps more than necessary for a C-tier. But it gives you a place to put sponsor advertising, so they are useful that way.  If you had done a text-only course routing sheet that would have been enough.  For Big D Doubles I do a text-only course routing sheet together with a course map.  But if it something you enjoy doing, do it.  It makes your tournaments a little cooler than what they would be without the booklet.

The extra holes were appropriate for the course.  They were all in the 2.5 to 3.5 range like the course and righty-favorable like the course.

I think when you have more experience as a TD and a player, you will better deal with the amount of disc golf you offer relative to the amount of daylight there is to play it in.  You can do a lot of things:  start earlier [sunrise was at 6:15], cap the number you are going to allow to play, and keep the process moving.  Larry LaBond is real good at this.  I've never finished one of his tournaments in the dark.

I'm not complaining.  I thought you did a good job.  I hate running winter tournaments and am glad there are good winter tournaments to play.

I had every intention of starting the first round no later than 9:30 and every intention of starting the second round no later than 2pm.  It would have been done if the registration didn't make things go so haywire on me.  That was a HUGE learning experience for me.

Thanks for the comments.

I would like to thank the TDs of the Winter Series ( Aaron Scott, Jason Rose and Scott Pitner ) for putting on these tournaments in such blistery, wet and frigid conditions.   Hopefully,  the Winter Series will continue for years to come and may these experiences make us better disc golfers.   Also, I will give a big thank you to everyone who helped TDs with their tournaments . Finally,  I  another thank you for a friend who could have a have played in the tournament and earned points in the Winter Series but decided to help me play a very inspired game, Ray Esquivel.

Absolutely awesome, the documentary video is available online!

A HUGE thanks to Seth Treptow and his crew for choosing the Irish You the Best of Luck tournament to come out and shoot.  According to Seth, they are going to make an expanded version of this video because they have so much more footage that they want to use.  The documentary challenge required the video to be no less than 4 minutes long and no less than 7 minutes long.

Check it out!

Very good piece.

The only thing I didn't like was the clip that had workers cutting down trees. I usually send these videos to park districts and especially the forest preserve. They don't like seeing trees cut down.

I could send that comment on to Seth for the larger video that they are working on.  I don't know if they video'd that clip themselves from down in St. Louis or if it was a stock type footage clip.  I also should probably mention to them that Barrett's name is spelled wrong in the credits (it's correct earlier on).

Now of course the version you'd probably want to send off to park districts is the shorter version, but I can send the commentary of to them for the extended version.

TD report has been sent to Karolyn (the usual email for TD reports is still not working), and it has been accepted.

31 non-current members played.  Wow.  only 1 new member.  I highly recommend people renew!  Some of those 31 got off easy because I know I didn't collect the $10, but I can't tell which ones (probably only 2-4 people).

Hopefully with Highland Park on 4/26 - as long as I get the official go ahead with the courses - I'll have the TD report turned in right away so that the ratings can make the 4/29 update. :)

It would be nice to have happen, but I think that they require TD reports to be in a week or two before the rating update so it probably wouldn't happen on their end if you got it in before the 29th!

I already have a note out to the PDGA asking what's going on - someone contacted me about it yesterday? I think.  I still have all of the results, so if they need me to resubmit anything it won't be a problem.  They also have my TD report, so they should be able to make ends meet there.

Trophies for this and the winter series will be worked on and sent out after I finish with my taxes.  I may have to look for an alternate method to print everything - my printer is working better with the black ink now, but it's still having some issues with the color ink.

My hope is to have a bunch to hand out at the IOS saturday if a player is there, otherwise I'll start mailing them out.

A couple of them are done, but are not shipped out.  I'll post the picture to what they look like when I get home tonight.  As long as my printer goes back to cooperating with me, they'll be out on Monday.

Kurt - you received a 5x7 frame, correct?  There was one smaller division that received an 8x10 frame when they were supposed to get 5x7.  I think it was Scott Klatt that received that 8x10, but confirming that I'm sending you the right size personalized picture would help!

It should have been as follows

Open: 1st - 8x10, 2nd - 5x7.  I know that I gave Open 1st a 5x7 because that was the only frame I had left.  I already purchased a new 8x10 for Adam and have his done - it's just not mailed yet.

Masters: 1st - 5x7 (I'm pretty sure I messed this one up)
Advanced: 1st - 8x10, 2nd: 5x7
Advanced Masters: 1st - 5x7
Advanced GMasters: 1st - 5x7
Intermediate: 1st - 8x10, 2nd: 5x7
Recreational: 1st - 8x10, 2nd: 5x7
Novice: 1st - 8x10, 2nd: 5x7
Juniors <19: 1st - 5x7

Each person will receive their trophy picture along with an extra thank you gift.

I had my wife email me a copy of one of the pictures so that you guys can see what these look like before they get sent out.  I shrunkified the picture so that it opens better on here, so what will print will be higher quality than what you see.  The background is the same for everything - just the division, place, and name changes.

I took the picture the day before the tournament.
