Send in your check. I hope to get prereg up for IOS#1 tonight.
WET! WET! WET!
With just about three weeks to tourney time it's not looking very promising to be a dry course. I think it will be safe to assume some deep water between holes 5 and 6.
Keeping baskets away from tournament positions until the week before will probably be best to preserve the course layout.
Looking forward to my first tourney of the year.
I hope it dries up a bit more, but if it keeps raining like it did today we're going to need canoes to get around.
This is very likely the last time we'll see a few of the holes in sanctioned play, so I may actually play both days.
Just a reminder, on Saturday three divisions play: Open Pro, Am 2 (Intermediate, Under 935) and Am 4 (Novice, Under 850). On Sunday ALL other divisions play, including all the gender and age restricted divisions. Let me see if i can find a trophy disc to show y'all:

Thanks in advance for answers to my questions...
Placements of baskets?
Safari holes?
Is Advance is playing long or short tees.... both??
Why am I missing so many 12ft putts?
IOS #1 course routing is here:
http://discontinuum.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=3844.0
Is the course even playable as it sits now with the wetness? I'd really like to play this tourny but I've never played there (about 2hrs from me), and I want to go up there to practice at least once before it. Or I guess what I should ask is, is this course playable in a tournament your first time there? I don't want to do that but it might just be the case.

1. Brett and Serge work that out.
2. Probably some temp holes but see #1.
3. Probably long/long for advanced and pros, long/short for intermediate and recs, short/short for novice, amateur women, juniors, but see #1.
4. You're an amateur. You play casual rounds but you don't practice. Me too.

The 'locals' (Serg, Shawn, etc.) can speak to the current conditions, but it's wet everywhere right now. Beyond that, I'd say Parkside is easily the best course within 90 mi of Chicago. (You can argue for Rockford [is that within 90 mi?], but I like Parkside better. Maybe because I usually play Parkside better. But I digress....)
Parkside is fun to play in any of its several pin positions; relatively easy from the short pads (although IOS will have many of the longer baskets, so it's not all that easy), but very challenging from the longs. But always fair and ultimately rewarding to play. Even if you play the course 'cold' you won't regret it.
I play all the IOS courses cold. If I'm lucky, I get in a round on Friday. If you play disc golf, there is nothing on an IOS course that you've never seen before, with one or two exceptions. Maybe you have not seen the elevated basket hole. Lay up, o.k.? Or take nine putts if you are playing in my division.
When I want to practice for an IOS, I just practice. I putt. I go to Holly to throw tight lines. I go to Firefighters to practice throwing 200 to 300 at baskets with obstacles in between. You don't have to go out to Kenosha to learn how to play disc golf.
Every year our April, May, and June venues are flooded out on the message board. Every year they are just fine when we actually play them. Not sure how that works. :D

It's gotta be the beard ;D
BTW, if anyone wants to Carpool from the Downers Grove area for Sunday I'm down to pay $ towards gas & food, just PM me
I think I will be up there both days and stay some place local Saturday night.
Like pretty much any course in the flat part of the world this time of the year, Parkside is one rainstorm away from being flooded and two sunny, breezy days from being dry. From what I here right now it is a little mushy all around with a few large puddles between some of the holes. Probably a lot like most everyone's back yard right now. But after this dry sunny weekend it will probably be a lot dryer. Hard to say what it will be like in a few weeks.
I highly recommend getting a pair of waterproof boots if you are disc golfing regularly. They are great for soggy springs, morning dews in the summer, etc. Dry feet are happy feet.
Thanks for the info guys, I will probably end up being there. I'm hoping there is going to be a sweet players handbook for this course like there was at the Irish tourny.

Player books are sweet. They are not easy to make and time consuming to get accurate measurements. #1 reason is cost. If there was free printing this might be an option.

OBs & the like will usually be given to us at the players meeting, just make sure you're not next to the idiot talking who wants OB strokes so you can listen & you should be all good!
How to practice for Kenosha ;)
I think i'll work in the Innova sponsorship the same way i do with discraft, with Throw Innova player packs, this time. I'm also going to do some cool dyed stuff on Innova Star. It will be priced up because that stuff is time consuming and there's the expense of getting the mask cut. The player pack will make that stuff very affordable. If anyone has any special requests for Yoda, Vader, Angry Cub, Bear, Classic Cubs, Chief, Brewers, Stevie Ray, etc., now's the time to shout out.

I'm going to try to put Brett's course info on the back of the score cards. I'll be doing those this week so I'll let you know how they turn out.
Both pages are rolling on the PDGA Tour Page. Also, i'm not 100% on this but i'm sure Sergio can answer this. I belive this is going to be the last tournament using the original 18 holes. Once construction starts several holes will be eliminated. Is that correct Serg?

This will be the last
PDGA SANCTIONED event using the original 18 holes.
There are talks of an informal gathering to bid the original course farewell. I'll post if we decide upon something.
We still don't have a specific date that holes will be removed and others installed. Mother nature needs to begin to cooperate.
Sent in my pre-registration along with one for a friend, really looking forward to this tournament, I've only heard good things about this course. ;D
If anyone is playing both days and wants to camp with us, if you have an RV or a conversion van or just a van with the back seats out, we know a couple of good Camp Walamartas that are cool with overnight guests in the parking lot.
Can anybody tell me what positions the baskets are going to be on for this tourny. A or B? I'm looking through the picture gallery for the course and noticed they have 2 basket positions.. any info will be very helpful thanks.

Preregistered list.
I'll be checking the pre-reg list this weekend and doing the micro-division trophies. I'm not any good at getting trophies done after the tournament, so I'm not doing that this year. I might carry some generic trophy discs that say something like, "Juniors - First Place," but neglect to say at what tournament. For adult divisions, one of you guys should just pre-register if you play in a micro-division and no one has pre-registered yet.
Just a reminder in case people missed it. The temp holes will have fly pads for tee pads.
Mailed my pre-reg and club membership $$ this past Saturday.

So what's the IOS stance (pardon the expression) on the towel under the knee question? (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=816808&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1)
The artificial devices rule allows you to use a towel to control abrasion to the skin. The Building a Lie FAQ recognizes that the Artificial Devices rule applies to any lie-building situation. There is nothing in the rules or the FAQs that would prevent using a towel under your knee if it is to control abrasion. It is no different from having a shoe on your foot.

I second that, so that must be the official IOS stance on towels used as shoes for your knees.

Folks,
We're pretty close to hammering this out. We've been talking about it for several weeks. Be patient....there should be a couple of new Q&A's up in the next couple of days.
The gist of the Q&A's will be that you cannot move obstacles on the course (sticks, rocks, etc..) and place them on your lie to build a stance, but you can place a towel or small pad behind your lie to prevent abrasions, etc (but not under your foot, since it's already covered by a shoe, except on the tee). We should have the exact wording out soon.

yeah, I saw that, but the wording in the 'current' Q&A (I wish they'd put dates on those things) indicates something different, so I thought I'd ask...

Not to derail this tourney thread, but the PDGA Rules Committee has issued a new Q&A (http://www.pdga.com/rule_casebook.php) regarding towels (they are now allowed for any body part other than your feet). They also added a new rule defining small pad: leave your fluffy spa towels at home.
It is nice to see I was right all along. ;) Probably even your big fluffy towel is going to squish down to less than a cm, but who in the US knows how big a cm is?
So then now using a towel to stand on when putting on ice is now illegal? I carried a beach towel with me all winter long and pretty much anytime it wasn't solid footing I'd lay that down like a magic carpet. Now illegal except on the teepad?
I don't think you'll have to worry about ice this weekend in Kenosha, but yes, standing on a towel (other than the teepad) is illegal. Many would argue that it has always been that way. Just invest in some crampons for next winter ;)

And Senior's number for Junior's on the other day.
Thanks for updating the pre-reg. We finished the straggler trophy discs tonight and did some other stuff. I heat set a Darkside Force and came within minutes of overcooking it. It came out really nice.
I think this is the year Kelsey will beat Barrett at a tournament. She's beaten me twice in a row on Cass Benton longs. Tonight I beat her by 3 in the big D part of the course and then she beat me by 4 in the accuracy part.
Also, the divisional plan seems to be working well to split the field 50/50. I'm surprised by the absence of an am master field, but in 2001 when they started using ratings breaks on the main am divisions I thought the age based divisions would wither away. Looks like there are four or five masters and grand masters playing intermediate.
So then when does Kelsey turn pro?
Right after Kira. :)
LOL!! It's the truth :)
Quote from: mirth on April 16, 2008, 05:10:46 AM
So then when does Kelsey turn pro?
She's 18 now, so she can turn pro whenever she wants. She likes playing in large divisions. She likes playing with people she has not played against before. I think she'll stay am for awhile. But she also likes money, so she might change her mind someday. Someday when pro women make money!

last yr @ Kenosha I think there were 5 or 6 am GM and *no* am masters. I imagine you'll get some on Sunday. I've got a conflict this Sunday so I can only play one day this year.

I know the Brakel girls are both 1/2-in. The rest I don't know.
Just a quick review of 1/2-In rules:
If half-in players cash, their other half is paid to the full ins who finished in the cash.
The cash bumps up, not down. No cash drops below the cash line.
Half-in amateurs can take prizes in lieu of cash and stay amateur.

What an awesome weekend! The weather was fantasctic both days. Thanks to everyone who played.
Fun times both days with the weather and good course conditions. Hole 18a was a good one this year. I went OB on my 2nd shot in all 4 of my rounds. You would think I'd be able to learn after the 1st 3 times.
Great job to all that ran this tournament and thank you to all the volunteers. I had a great time today. I would have liked to shot a little better but still was a great day. Thanks everyone!! Looking forward to IOS #2

Thanks to everyone who came out to play and everyone that came out to help. We had a great time as always. The course looked great. Don't forget that the brass expires at the end of this year.
How windy was it up there on Sunday? I thought the scores on Saturday in general were a bit high, even for the pros, esp. considering it was practically dead calm. Looks like the rounds rated about 16 pts higher on Sunday.
Thanks again to Brett, the Brakels and the rest of the IOS staff for another well-run event. You've set a high standard for tournaments around here and your efforts ARE appreciated by many!!
Thanks for the great tourney, very well run. Worth every bit of the 700 mile round trip. See ya @ IOS #2.

It was gusty and it was costing people strokes on putts on hole 8 and on OB on the holes by roads etc.
I know I shot 4's on 18A on Saturday and 5's on Sunday. It was definitely windier.
Thanks to the Brakels and all the volunteers for another well-run event. Awesome job getting the scores up on the PDGA right away. Mukey missed a great chance to beat me. I still had fun, and it's great to finally be back on the course playing again. Ben has decided that the "Schwinn" t-shirt is bad luck, and he's officially retiring it. After he changed at the break, his round rating changed by 100 points.
I thought the 700 mile round trip was worth it too. We pulled in around 4:30 a.m. and I was in bed by 5:00. The ride home was smooth sailing after we got off the Edens. If you're willing to pay the $10, you pretty much have the Skyway all to yourself now-a-days. Maybe it's $7 for the Lexuses and BMWs. It's $10 if you pull a one-axle trailer.
UWParkside has [soon to be "had"] one of the best flat land courses I've ever seen. I always enjoy that course even if I don't play so well sometimes. [I think the scores reflect that the more responsibility you feel for a tournament, the worse you play at a tournament you are responsible for.] We will have many fond memories of that course after it is ruined by campus expansion.
On behalf of the Waterford Junior Girls' Club, the Waterford Brakels would like to thank all the players and non-players who bought a disc for cash. Nothing says thank you as much as when you pull out your wallet and spend $12 on an ESP or Z disc or a hat or t-shirt.

Mukey missed a great chance to beat me.
Woulda been the 1st
Will definetly be at the remainder of the IOS events, especially after Brett's post
Thanks to everyone for running a spectacular tournament. This was my first trip up to UW Parkside, and the course was just awesome.

Big Eric,
Great meeting you this weekend. Glad you enjoyed the course. The Parkside crew does a fantastic job upkeeping that course.
Take care!
Thanks to Jon for getting the scores up so quickly. Thanks to Serg for taking care of tags. Thanks to Serg and Dave and all the other great staff and volunteers for getting Parkside in such great condition. Thanks to Brett for the alternate holes. 18A was great. Thanks to Bruce and the women for having so much great merchandise available.
It was a great two days, 181 players and a bunch of new DISContinuum Club Members. (Sorry about the high number Rob.)
Congrats to Scott Burtard for the open win and for back to back wins in one weekend.
Congrats to Schumann from going DFL at the Wisconsin Tour Warm Up to first at IOS #1.
Special thanks to Aaron and Dave for helping me out and to Mike Clark and Adrian Sr. for always lending a helping hand.
There are many people that help to make events run smoothly. There are many hours of hard work that go into making an event run smoothly.
And thanks to Mike Krupicka. Mike has become an invaluable resource around tournament central and has now written this great spread sheet so that we can do payouts and tournament financials in a fraction of the time it used to take us.

Heck yeah. Sorry Mike. There are many people who make a difference in the outcome of the event.
Thanks everyone, it was fun and well run as usual. Got to play with a lot of cool people and beat a Schwinn. Mukey, you should have been there (especially with no Wham Bam this year).
Now if I ever learn to play, maybe I can hold it together for more than one round.
I thought the division splits worked out just fine. I never ran into any real backups at all on Saturday. Sunday had a backup from 18A through hole 2 or 3, but that probably had more to do with the wind than anything else.
The half-in thing worked well, I thought, for the pros. If those had been two trophy-onlys finishing above the cash line in Open, I doubt that the two pros below the cash line would have been there to collect. After running the payouts Jon decided that 1/2-ins should be counted as 1/2 players for purposes of deciding how many to pay. I agree for no-cash-added C-tiers. It's just like how we count trophy-onlies as non-players for that purpose.
