IOS #4 @ Aurora, IL--07/19 & 07/20 2008
Merching up even as we speak. Don't know how I'm going to do this since I'm running Big D Doubles the week before. It is going to be a busy July.
We keep filling on Sunday so be sure to pre-reg.
Be sure to check your new rating. If you are a non-member who has been bagging in a lower division (we seem to have a few this year), you may be bumped up by new IOS ratings. This is your chance to join the PDGA and continue to play in the division of your choice until the next ratings update.
All that 1000 rated golf moved me down a point. I've got an intermediate rating and I'm not afraid to use it!
Prereg is online.

I want one!
Me Too!!
Just a reminder that new PDGA ratings are out. The ratings elves have also been working hard and a lot of people are going to be bumped up a division. If you are not a member and want to know what division you are eligible for, post here, and I will check with the elves.
For example: For the top 15 series points holders in the Novice division, only 3 are eligible to stay in the Novice division. Those three are current PDGA members.
Mike, if the elf ratings bump up some of the recent IOS players who are not PDGA members from Am 2, 3 or 4, feel free to point them out. I would guess Matt Lucky Cook is out of Am 4, but i have not done the research and math. I did notice that every other ratings capped division was won by a PDGA member at Crystal Lake.
The comprehensive ratings document we got last time was excellent but it takes a village to enforce the process. If we name names in a nice way here, hopefully the information will get out to those who need to know and to those who might bring it to our attention during registration at Aurora.

Matt Lucky Cook is a PDGA member. He just hasn't gotten a number or rating yet.
Matt's rating is 829 according to the search I did unless theres another Matt Cook in IL. Looks like he's still eligible for Novice.
There are three Matt Cook's playing disc golf in Illinois. One is a member, one is a junior and one is the new member Matt Lucky Cook. The elves have Matt Lucky Cook firmly in MA3 (around 895).
Matt "Lucky" Cook's PDGA membership was submitted today. We'll see where they put him and if they include his prior rounds....

Matt "Lucky" Cook can play whatever division his official PDGA rating allows him to. In the event that the PDGA does not have a rating for him yet, then he can play in whatever division he wants to. Membership has its privledges.

Sweet! I'll actually have a chance to be top 5! Thanks to all of those that stunk less than I did and moved on up lol :)
Attached (must be logged in to view) is the list of nonmembers and their division eligibility at IOS #4. PDGA ratings for current members supersede this list. (Some of the data may pre-date when they became a member). If you (or your friend) question the calculated division, shoot me a PM and I can ask the elves for more detail.

The next time the elves come out of the hollow tree, can you ask them if they can identify non-member series players that have been bumped up on this ratings update? It would be nice to get the word out to them that they will need to play up a division in Aurora.
The elves enjoyed themselves on the beach this past weekend, but did find some time to figure this much out for those that do not have PDGA numbers in the Series Point standings.
The following have a non-member rating which bumps them into a new division:
To Advanced Women:
Crystal Tatro
To Advanced Men:
Nate Day
To Intermeidate:
Josh Donoho
Mike VanTassel
Josh Strange
Ray Liveratore
To Recreational:
Matt Cook
Jon Spinazzola
Ben Carrescia
Steve Sajdak
David Halstead
Ryan Gruber
David Jackson
Patrick Carlson
Congrats everyone on their fine performances. :hello2:

As to each of those players, if you join the PDGA, or if you have joined the PDGA, IOS bump rules do not apply to you. If you join the PDGA or already have joined the PDGA, you can play in any division indicated by your rating, age, gender and pro/am classification.
If you know any of these players, if you play leagues with them or something, let them know. Not everyone reads Discontinuum.
All I can say is I hope I entered the correct division (novice) being my first tournament and all.
I was goofing around with a silly colormax idea. I have not sent it to Discraft yet. What do you think?
That looks really cool, Bruce :o B) B) B)
Diana and Kira think it is cool looking and funny, but they don't think others will get it.
This one is more "accessible":
My wife is not impressed by the first one. I think it looks cool but will be easily lost.
The second one she really, really likes.
Jupiter is normally a swirly brown color. I oranged it up a bit. It actually looks unchanged to me, but Kira consulted.
I have to agree with mike. I think the first one would definately be a lost disc candidate at a wooded course. Although, if you get either one made up, I will be in line to get one.
Both are pretty cool, what molds would you be getting? Challenger, Buzzz, & Surge?
I'm out of Cryz and Z Buzzzes and Challengers, ESP Forces and Flicks. That's what I'll be ordering.
Bruce - unless you can work some magic with Erich, he told me that their next scheduled super color printing will not be until the end of July - you probably will not be able to get anything for Aurora... That's why he had me really rush through my Roselle order (which is arriving tomorrow).
I was thinking Colormax, not Supercolor. Unless something has changed, Colormax is generally available.

ah, forgot about colormax. It's an intriguing idea, but I guess depending on how the graphics turned out I can't give it a thumbs up or down. I think I still like hotstamping better.
I like Colormax because
(a) It sells faster if I come up with something appealing
(b) It comes off cleaner if I don't!
;D

It is time for micro-division players to pre-register if you want to prompt me to make a trophy for your micro-division. But a lot of the micro-divisions are pre-registered. It's time to pre-register anyway.
This is from last year's IOS #5 @ Aurora. (It's an old thread now. So if it's okay, I'll just post it here, to get ready for this year's event):

I will forward your inquiry to Jon and Brett, along with the explanation that you are injured, and i think rolling it over is fine. Hope to see you in September in Rockford.
Check for David Scott, junior under 10 is in the mail.
O.k. so I now have two Chainstars and McManus was first. Will second be at IOS 4 with 375 Brass? Who is second?
I remember you telling me that I was third in line. If you don't get rid of it, I will gladly take it off your hands.

How quickly things change. I think it is doubtful that I will be there on Thursday. I was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and will probably be here for a few days because they are giving me IV antibiotics...it's not all bad though I'm getting dilaudid every two hours! :toothy10:

Sounds good to me! My arm should definitely be healed by then.
As usual all the good dyed stuff will be there Saturday. Sunday will get the left overs. Supposedly I'll have 40 Monarchs. Hope this hot disc has a half life of more than seven days! ;D
I checked PDGA to see how things were filling up when I noticed 2 >900 players registered in Rec. :o
When is the latest someone can pre-reg online? I have a buddy here that is on the fence but I keep tugging him to fall over to the I'm going to IOS #4 side.
I sent a pm to Jon and Brett regarding the two baggers. Online Pre-reg should be closing on Thursday.
Online prereg closes 7/17 at 5 PM
Thanks, I'll make my buddy register tomorrow after leagues.
I have the rest of the trophy discs under dye. This time we're doing this design:

I watched the video. Very nice. I don't know if it was intentional but I enjoyed the humor of having only one missed putt in the video and it was McManus clanking a 15 footer.
i see there is another bagger in rec on sunday
oh no worries Bruce, the two putts before the McManus putt were also misses, it is just tough to see unless you're in high res. I now see why I'm stuck in AM4. I'd miss the majority of the putts that people made in that video hah.

I am pretty sure that one was a 10 footer.
I would not mind at all if the Am 4, Am 3 and Am 2 players this weekend would pay attention to the leaderboard and double check for players who did not catch their PDGA rating change or their ELF rating change. You see a lot of this the next tournament after a rating update. I'll print out an extra copy of the ratings book.
Eric Bassett has been moved to advanced. Thank you for catching that one.
Bruce,
I think my nephew Eric intends to play Intermediate.
Jim - just make sure that he would know that he's playing Saturday and not Sunday if he was to play Intermediate.
He is registered for both days on PDGA
Eric can sort that out with Becky when he shows up, what he paid for, what he's playing. It looks like the pre-reg people got him out of Rec.
I just spoke to Eric. He intends on playing both days.
Intermediate on Saturday and Advanced on Sunday.
jim why dont you come out and play int. ????
All the Fox Valley registrations have been added to the tour page. Thanks guys for taking registrations tonight.
There are 142 players registered between the 2 days. Bruce will be at the course taking reg's again tomorrow late afternoon & night.
Sorry I will not be out there tomorrow to make the temp holes. I've been on the DL this week and plan to play at this point.
Hamilton Miller and Alan Waggoner will be coming from Iowa.
They will be at the Park at 8PM and would like to register.

I wish I could come to Aurora and compete, but ....
I have played about 10 rounds in 2008. My game is in the tank (though the way I normally play you might not notice).

Actually I think there' was a mistake here, the Jeff Collins that pre-reg'd is a buddy of mine that is not a PDGA member. I'm pretty sure he's had this problem before, two discing Jeff Collin's in Indiana. I managed to rally up him & his brother to make the trip from Indy with me this time.
Hi everyone. I heard from JCthrills that there was some confusion regarding my signup for IOS #4 at Aurora this weekend.
There are at least 3 disc golfers with the name "Jeff Collins" in Indiana. I've played in one tournament with an advanced golfer named Jeff A. Collins who is a PDGA member from northern Indiana, and I've been told that there's an older gentleman named Jeff Collins that has played tournaments in the past.
I'm Jeff D. Collins, have been playing since Sept. 2007, and I am not a PDGA member. I have been trying to sign up for most of my tournaments as "Jeffe Collins" (a nickname) lately as a way to avoid confusion, but hadn't thought that the madness would follow me to Illinois. ;D
At any rate, just wanted to confirm that I have no PDGA number and would like to play in the amateur recreational division on Sunday.
Thanks guys, and see you on Sunday.

I have a rules question about something I saw in that YouTube video from IOS#5 from last year.
There is a clip where a guy drives then takes off his hat and throws it to the ground.
Is that a penalty?

You can warn him for courtesy violation.( 801.01 b ) Next time he would be pentalized 1 stroke per violation or if the guy gets to stupid the TD can disqualify him.
Watched the video for the first time and saw that Tom McManus made an appearance ;D

And in this case, the guy smiled after he picked up his hat. He was upset with his throw, but didn't bring anybody down in the group with a bad attitude. He wasn't really as upset as he looks in the video.
Ending bag tags from Saturday at IOS #4 Aurora:

52 Tyler Williams

56 Dave Nelson
60 Travis Brown
62 Ben Schwinn
63 Nick Chernikovich
65 Phil Popovich

It never ceases to amaze me how effiecient you are with everything at the IOS tournaments. Even short handed as you were today! KUDOS!!!!
Nice shooting today Tyler!
Really wish there were more tags on the line! I needed to be 9 strokes better to get a chance at the next tag *sigh* little tough to do!
Good times at the tournament today :) Hope it is better weather for everyone tomorrow!
looks like we were off by a little bit Tyler, more than a 100 point swing from first to second round haha. I had a great time today can't wait for tomorrow. Here's hoping I don't get the guy on my second card tomorrow if he is playing. I think he missed his afternoon nap or his mom didn't give him warm milk this morning. He was a whiny baby when we called him on a glaring rules infraction for the next 10 holes or so.

Would you believe I shot that round playing with 4 junior players? 3 of them being under 13.
I had no pressure on me as I figured I would not really do that well with playing with juniors. I didn't even know how I was doing until there were 4 holes left in the 1st round.
Believe it or not, I was just happy to be able to play with my kid.
Good shooting Arron! It's awesome to see the young kids out there. Thanks to everyone that made IOS #4 happen. Excellent job again. Cant wait for NEXT YEAR. ;)
Nice job Aaron! Is that your first 1000+ rated round?
Yeah it was. Hopefully not my last, though! ;D
What a weekend! Fantastic turnout & pretty good weather besides that Saturday morning drizzle. Lots of aces!!
Thank you Fox Valley for all of your help! Please check out their website and join. The disc golf scene has come a long way over the past 2 years thanks to Fox Valley.

Thank you to all the helpers that stepped up this weekend with many key helpers gone. With 212 players the wheels kept turning. I am sorry if I missed your name. Bruce, Jon, Becky, Maddisen, Sammy, Marie, Ben, David, Patti, Dan, Mike, Scott, Ryan, Spike & Mirth. Your time & help is much appreciated.
I officially fired myself this weekend. Hole # 13A or B on the scorecard was the worst all time temporary hole at an IOS. Sammy will be taking my place :D.
It was a great weekend indeed! I had a free weekend so I volunteered my time to help mainly at the merch table. It was an eye opener. Most tournaments I play my rounds and get in the car and run home. This weekend I got a chance to see how putting on a tournament is a labor of love. Nobody is making any signficant money off of this. If you want to make money there are a billion better ways to do it. You have to have passion for the sport, limitless energy and lots of personal time. Bruce is at the course about three hours before the players meeting unloading boxes and boxes of stuff that he had to order the stuff, dye some of it, organize it and then jam it into his van in the first place. Becky (and usually Jon) and family are there soon thereafter setting up registration and trying to make it as seamless as possible for us to get on the course. Brett, who normally has recruited Clark and Michler to help, is driving around dropping off baskets and setting up the temp baskets. Of course, they have to pick up that stuff at the end of the day as well. While the rest of us are eating, checking our equipment, walking the course, putting etc, they are working. Jon, even when he is on the disabled list, has scores up so fast that I was reading them off of my PDA before the awards ceremony even took place!
I got the chance to throw a couple of drives and about a dozen practice putts before the two minute warning was called. The staff that runs the event has this occur every time.
The same goes for the lunch hour and the time after the tournament. I could see some players getting a little antsy as they had a long drive home. I sympathized with them but I also saw Brett and Bruce hustling to get scores figured out and awards correctly made. This is more difficult with trophy only and with AMs getting brass if they "cash" in a pro division. It would be a lot easier to simply do away with such concepts, but we like it and they offer it.
Its a thankless task. I appreciate TD's all over for putting on a show and taking the time to get it right. The next time you play a tournament, whether IOS or any other tournament. Say thanks to the TD before you go home. Lets face it, its a great day. We all have a boatload of fun and they help bring the show to the course where we are playing. One way of saying thanks is to lend a hand. Little tasks make things run a little smoother, like Tyler figuring out bag tags for both Discontinuum and Fox Valley Metro, or Spike officiating a playoff for Rec. Sometimes its simply going and getting lunch for somebody who is working the table during lunch. Len and Bill did that for me on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks guys.
The next time I play I will only have to worry about myself. That's going to be easy.
I wish to thank the gracious Pro Grand Masters that I had the opportunity to play with both rounds yesterday. They were very supportive and complementary to both of us in the Int. Women division. They were a pleasure to play with :)
Another very well run IOS event! The course was very fun, I only wish it was on the south side of Chicago & closer to Indiana :) See you all at #5 Hopefully with another truckload of Circle City Travelers.
only one gripe....please no 'shorts' next year
We had 210 players. Why change a thing? ;D
Thanks for the nice comments, David. I kind of felt like I was working as an FAA Flight Controller...helping to bring the flight in for a safe and smooth landing. I calculated the payouts, entered the day-of members to the TD spreadsheet, took scores over the phone, uploaded them to pdga.com and watched the weather radar on Saturday for any severe weather on its way to Aurora. It was nice to be able to stay connected even though I couldn't be there and it helped keep me from feeling like I let the team down.
We are surrounded by hard working, intelligent volunteers and I think we've been smart enough to let them do what they do well (and presumably enjoy doing) rather than try to talk someone into doing stuff they don't want to do.

Well it certainly seems to be working! I hope I won't be missing the efficient machine knows as IOS next year!

I wasn't there, but if there are rounds at 18 under I would probably agree. The shorts there are pretty damn easy.
The shorts are defiinitley short. Saturday was the first time I had played them.
Had the longs been played both rounds the awards ceremonies would have started after 7pm both days.
As a player and TD i'm willing to sacrifice a tougher course layout 1 round then limit the field to 18 holes/90 players. I'd rather play in bigger field sizes with bigger payouts.
I kinda like the shorts. :-[ ;D

Great minds make great tournaments! IOS fits that mold. Keep up the good work Brett and company. <_<

Jason Rose, if you were at the course as late as the TD's and then had to drive 5 hours home and go to work the next day you would be thanking god you played the shorts. I agree the longs are much more fun.

I officially fired myself this weekend. Hole # 13A or B on the scorecard was the worst all time temporary hole at an IOS. Sammy will be taking my place :D.
Didn't we once have a temp hole so short it was declared ineligible for the ace pool? A 90 footer or something? I may be thinking of someone else's tournament.

Not at an IOS. Maybe something you and I did before we teamed up with Brett when we were running micro tournaments.
I personally liked the variety the short tees added to the tournament as a whole. Also it allows people without "big arms" to keep the competition close by playing a more finess style of game rather then trying to get significant distance every hole. The format was great, The tournament I thought went very smooth and I am very thankful to all those who volunteered and helped to make everything fun, exciting, and enjoyable.
I hope to be at Rockford but we will see how time and expenses are with the little one due midway through August.
